The presented article is an attempt to answer the question about the legal character of pastoral work of parish priests and parish assistants in the light of the polish law. Analysis of labour legislations, social insurance, current tax regulations and civil law leads to conclusion that priestly ministry cannot be classified as employment contract or any other form of employment. This sort of ministry can’t be listed in any known type of legal agreement. In such a case contractus innominatus (nameless contract) should be applied to the clerical ministry. Polish law permits the use of contractus innominatus. The content of such contracts, within the boarders determined by the absolutely obligatory norms, can be freely drawn up by the parties.

SPP XXII 95 (early 3rd century ad) is concerned with the leading priests of the sanctuary of Soknopaios, who were arrested on account of the suspicious death of a clothes vendor. Their interrogations, however, brought no result, and now efforts are being made to have them released. In the present papyrus, the head of the office summarises the state of affairs in order to append it as a ‘cover-letter’ to the petition submitted to the strategos.

After the end of the Second World War, a rather long Soviet occupation began in Lithuania. This was a difficult period of trials for the entire Lithuanian society, and especially for the Catholic Church. Any possibility of permanent training of clergy was then forbidden. In this way, Catholic priests in Lithuania learned to act underground. The need for spiritual and intellectual improvement was not just an individual affair. During the long years of Soviet occupation, certain schools were formed to provide assistance to the priests of the persecuted Church. Such schools became secretly operating monasteries. Lithuanian priests drew courage from the personality of Pope John Paul II, as well as new ideas from underground publications and books imported from abroad, especially from Poland. Soviet atheist propaganda, which persecuted priests and wanted to turn them into people without higher education and present them as such in society, did not achieve its goals.

This article examines the use of the title papa in the Greek and Coptic papyri, ostraca, and inscriptions of the third–ninth centuries, refuting previous claims that it was primarily used as a ‘priestly title’. The main grammatical features of the term are sketched out, before delineating the use of papa as both noun and honorific to mean ‘bishop’ over the third–seventh centuries, and then as an honorific for monastic administrators after the sixth century. Some brief observations are then made on how the title appears to develop over the ninth–thirteenth centuries.

Opis:
Drawing on James Scott’s works on “everyday resistance” and “weapons of the weak”, this article inquires whether Roman Catholic women’s gossip and jokes about priests may lead to a redefinition of priest-parishioners’ relations. Using ethnographic material collected during field research in rural Poland, the article demonstrates the ambivalent nature of anticlerical jokes and rumours, which, rather than constituting a tool of change, reaf- firm the existing order. In putting forward this argument, the article critically engages with Scott’s theory and reflects on the problematic role of researchers in presenting the issue of agency and resistance. The analyzed case-study from the Polish countryside constitutes a point of departure for addressing a broader context of church-state relations and the situation of women in the Catholic Church in Poland.

This paper aims to understand the individual factors sustaining the migratory flow of Catholic priests to Italy. Priests’ migration cannot be seen as the mere result of lack of vocations and shortage of priests in the host country since their agency, belief, aspirations, and motivations affect their religious identity and, consequently, their integration and participation in the host country. Drawing on qualitative research, this paper collects the voices and the narratives of selected international priests living in Italy. Priests’ interviews led to broad-range questions about the nature of migration decisions and their integration into the host society and churches that originate from differences in religiosity, vocations, and missions. That resulted in a typology of 4 types of migrant priests: careerist priests, highly educated and integrated into the host country, driven by career and salary aspiration, and showing a highly politicized vision of religion; servant priests, with a strong missionary impulse to serve the Church as a universal institution transcending abstract and real boarders; evangelist priests who feel the moral obligation to evangelize secularized countries to bring them back to the origins of Catholicism; rebel priests who feel second-class priests, discriminated both within and outside the Church, in a country where they were forced to move, for this reason questioning their sense of clear vocational directions.

Detailed analysis of the research results pertaining to the role of religion in acculturation process of Poles in UK clearly points to the fact that Polish priest become a key person for understanding dynamic of acculturation process of both groups: immigrants and host population. Therefore the following perspectives on the role of Polish priest will be provided: • Perspective of Polish priests working in UK • Perspective o Polish parishioners • Perspective of British parishioners • Perspectives of Polish church hierarchy • Perspectives of British Church hierarchy • Perspectives of British priest with whom Polish priest shares work in the parish Paper points to various difficulties in fulfilling expectations of different groups towards Polish priests, conflictual characteristic of priest’s role, and deficits in proper preparation of priests for their work in UK. As the theoretical background of the process The Interactive Acculturation Model ( Bourhis, Moise, Perreault, Senecal 1997) will be employed. The model points to the influence of host population on the final outcome of acculturation process of newly arriving group.

In 1976 the Polish Episcopate made a decision to regulate the status of Polish priests who left for the USA in 1956-1976. In Warsaw, thr work was manages by the Episcopal Secretariat, and in the USA, the coordinating office in Orchard Lake Schools, headed by Rev. Msgr. Alexander Cendrowski. Bishop Wesoły and Rubin from Rome cooperated with the center. On behalf of the  American Episcopate, the Secretary General, Archbishop Bernardin, and the head of the Emigration and Tourism Commission Bishop Gracida cooperated. In the years 1956-1976, 356 priests and religious left Poland from 48 dioceses and 14 religious orders, including 165 priests and 186 religious. October 15, 1977 the status of priests was as follows: incardinated priests 52, religious 56; 16 in the incardination process, 17 emeritus, 7 returned to Poland, 33 had problems with incardination, 56 worked as a guest. The worked the most; 42 in Detroit, 41 in Chicago, 20 in Gary, 18 in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, 15 Buffalo, less than 10 in 18 dioceses It was impossibile to establish the status of the other priests they were suspended, sent to the secular state and entered into marriage. After 1978 Polish bishops made individual decisions and, in general, they lifted their suspensions and allowed them to work in the USA.
W 1976 r. Episkopat Polski podjął decyzję uregulowania statusu księży polskich, którzy w latach 1956-1976 pojechali do Stanów Zjednoczonych. W Warszawie pracami kierował Sekretariat Episkopatu, a w USA biuro koordynacyjne w Seminarium Polskim w Orchard Lake, na czele którego stał ks. prał. Aleksander Cendrowski. Z ośrodkiem amerykańskim współpracowali biskupi Władysław Rubin i Szczepan Wesoły z Rzymu. Z ramienia Episkopatu Amerykańskiego współpracowali Sekretarz Generalny Episkopatu Amerykańskiego, arcybiskup Joseph Bernardin i szef Komisji Emigracji i Turystyki biskup Rene Gracida. Z Polski w latach 1956-1976 wyjechało do Stanów Zjednoczonych 354 księży i zakonników z 48 diecezji i 14 zakonów, w tym 165 księży i 189 zakonników. Status na dzień 15 października 1977 r. przedstawiał się następująco: inkardynowanych  księży 52, zakonników 56; w procesie inkardynacji 16; emerytów 17; wróciło do Polski 7; problem z inkardynacją miało 33; pracowało na prawach gościa 56. Najwięcej pracowało: 42 w Detroit, 41 w Chicago, 20 w Gary, po 18 w Brooklynie i Filadelfii, 15 w Buffalo, poniżej 10 w 18 diecezjach. O pozostałych księżach nie można było ustalić ich miejsca pobytu, statusu, czy też byli suspendowani bądź przeszli do stanu świeckiego czy zawarli małżeństwo. Po 1978 r. polscy biskupi podejmowali indywidualne decyzje i na ogół cofali duchownym suspensy i pozwalali im pracować w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

The article raises the issue of medieval seals of parish priests, lesser known in Polish historiography. Modest to-date achievements of scholars in this field, research perspectives and postulates, as well as methodological conditions were discussed. Moreover, five Silesian parsons’ sigilla from the year 1312 were subject to analysis, which demonstrated that they constitute an excellent source of knowledge on mentality and personal features of their users, and even on the relations between them and other people or institutions; such knowledge is not always provided by other available accounts.

The article presents the role of Polish clergy in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 on the basis of press publications of the time. Tens of thousands of Poles took part in this conflict. Their engagement in this war is still little known. Even less known is the involvement of Polish Catholic priests in this war. The author has analyzed about 50 Polish-language magazines published in Polish territories under the Russian partition. The work contains memoirs from the war front, included in letters written by Polish Catholic priests, their opinions and accounts. These men played a great role at the war front. They provided spiritual support and raised the morale of Polish soldiers. They helped to treat the wounded and performed daily field-duties. Catholic priests were treated with great respect and recognition.

The inhabitants of Szadek and its neighbourhood, gathering in the parish church to participate in the liturgy and listen to the Church teaching, shaped their religious and moral attitudes. The source materials providing the basis for establishing the religious and moral state of the parish of Szadek in the second half of the 1811‘ century include primarily the preserved records of five canonical inspections carried out in 1759-1760, 1762, 1779, 1788 and 1798. The Worship of God Was mainly performed during services and masses in three churches: the parish church under the invocation of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin and St. James the Apostle, renovated in 1788, With rich interior decorations (13 altars, many paintings and sculptures), St. Giles’ Church, also renovated in 1788 and used only occasionally, and the Holy Trinity Church at the local hospital. The religious and moral condition of the parishioners depended largely on the parish clergy - their personal attitude and pastoral care. In the first half of the 1811‘ century, the person responsible for pastoral Work Was the local parish-priest, supported by the missionary college priests (performing also other functions in the parish) and the hospital provost. The parishioners themselves took active part in the religious and moral formation of their community through activities of church brotherhoods, guilds and a parish school, as Well as in the care for the sick, elderly, poor and homeless (the hospital, fulfilling also the function of a poor-house).

Parafia uniejowska należała do nielicznych w Polsce parafii o wieloosobowej obsadzie plebańskiej. W XV wieku w Uniejowie opiekę duszpasterską sprawowało dwóch proboszczów: pleban wiejski – wiceprepozyt oraz pleban miejski – wicearchidiakon. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie zagadnienia wieloosobowych parafii oraz odtworzenie i scharakteryzowanie piętnastowiecznej grupy proboszczów parafii uniejowskiej. W pracy przedstawiono również kwestie regulacji majątkowych i wzajemnych relacji między plebanami uniejowskimi.
In the 15th century, the Uniejów parish was one of a few parishes in Poland which had two parsons: one who took care of parishioners living in the town, and the other – of parishioners in rural areas. The paper characterizes the 15th century group of Uniejów parish priests as well as addresses a broader issue of parishes with more than one priests, including property regulations and mutual relations between the parsons.
