    Opis:
    This paper examines whether translator subservience is generalisable among translators. Taking professional Curaçaoan Papiamentu translators as a case study built on a much larger work, the research looks at issues of subservience from the perspective of agency in the English-to-Papiamentu lexical transfer process and at the influence of language prestige. The results show instances in which the translators reported more lexical transfers than did the non-translators. The results also reveal an overlooked translator agency in the process rather than translator subservience, in view of the fact that in this process they are on the “frontline”, pre-empting whatever decisions the official language planners make.

    Niniejszy artykuł został poświęcony cmentarzowi w Prużanie. W centrum uwagi znalazła się kwestia prestiżu (w socjolingwistycznym wymiarze) języków wykorzystywanych na inskrypcjach nagrobnych. Badanie umożliwiło rekonstrukcję skomplikowanych procesów społeczno-kulturowych, które wtedy odbywały się na terenie Polesia Zachodniego. Cezury czasowe z jednej strony wyznaczają lata trzydzieste XIX w., z drugiej zaś, lata siedemdziesiąte XX w.Przeprowadzona analiza pozwoliła ujawnić języki, które dominowały na inskrypcjach nagrobnych miasta Prużana: tymi językami były język polski oraz język rosyjski. Jednocześnie zostało zauważone, że po 1939 r. język polski stopniowo zaczął tracić swoją pozycję. Tekst pozytywnie zweryfikował wstępną hipotezę o związku języka nagrobków z afiliacją religijną zmarłych oraz potwierdził założenie o wzajemnym wpływie różnych obrzędów pogrzebowych na ziemiach prużańszczyzny.
    The article is devoted to the cemetery of Pruzhany. The object of the study were inscriptions and gravestone symbols. The text is based on the analysis of materials obtained during the field study. The article uses quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as comparative and philological analysis. A special attention was paid to the language in the context of social prestige, which made it possible to reconstruct socio-cultural processes in this territory. The studied tombstones are dated as covering two centuries: from the 19th to the 20th centuries (the limitary dates being: 1830 and 1970).            The analysis revealed the languages that dominated over the grave inscriptions in the period studied: Polish and Russian. At the same time, it was noted, that after 1939 the Polish language began to lose its position. The text positively confirmed the original hypothesis of a direct relationship between the language of gravestones and religious affiliation and confirmed the assumption of the mutual influence of various funeral rites.

    So far, more than 20 Slavic literary microlanguages have been identified, differing by the level of linguistic polyvalence they have achieved. The sources from which microlanguages derive their language efficiency are usually (at least for a certain time) the respective Slavic macrolanguages (such as Polish, Czech or Slovenian) characterized a longstanding literary tradition and use by distinguished representatives of the nation. Codificators of Slavic microlanguages attempt to increase their prestige in various ways. One of the methods of proving that a nascent literary language is functionally efficient and worthy of international recognition is the translation of world literature classics, including the whole or parts of the Bible. Translators of the Bible are, in a certain sense, following in the footsteps of their predecessors who intellectualized folk dialects or not yet fully effective written languages, transforming them into literary languages. As far as Slavic microlanguages are concerned, the richest collection of biblical writings can be found among the Lusatians, with the entire Protestant version of the Bible having been translated into Lower Sorbian and the entire Protestant and Catholic versions into Upper Serbian. The entire New Testament or the four Gospels have been translated into the following Slavic microlanguages: Cashubian, Prekmurje Slovene, Ruthenian, Banat Bulgarian and West Polesian. In case of the Silesian, Podhale, Carpatho-Rusyn (Lemko) and Eastern Slovakian microlanguages, only portions of the NT are available.

    The aim of the study is to reconstruct the views on the status and prestige of the Polish language in the end of the 18th century in the light of the book by Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski Myśli o pismach polskich. The work is cognitively attractive, as it gives a testimony to the status and prestige of the Polish language in the breakthrough period for the Polish state, i.e. just after the Third Partition, and even before the intensification of the tendencies to deprive Poles their national identity. In his book Myśli o pismach polskich, the author expresses an unshakable view of the high status of Polish and the shattered prestige. Institutions such as stable state power, capital, intellectual elites, scientific and critical publishing houses, periodicals, schools, theaters, the family can be distinguished among the factors shaping both spheres.

    The article outlines the sociolinguistic parameters of language attitudes in terms of speech behaviour. The choice of language as a native tongue and the choice of language code in a multilingual environment and speech activity within the same language determine the balance between the rational and emotive attitude to language. Language priorities, language orientation and language competence and assessment of status, prestige and the power of language are the main indicators that show an attitude to language in specific speech situations and communicative situations. The analysis of their impact on linguistic behaviour is the basis for a forecast of the language situation in Ukraine.

    This article focuses on the analysis of the scientific literature on investigating language attitude, theoretical approaches to the language attitude analyzed, the core paradigms of investigation connected to studying and distinguishing of language attitude presented, as well as the importance of data gathered regarding language attitudes and the specific nature of the language attitude studies in Ukraine that are analyzed. Studying language attitudes is popular, as the language which is investigated has numerous sociocultural functions, and knowledge of language attitudes helps to achieve success in language policy planning. Moreover, influences on linguistic personality and language attitudes allow evaluation not only of the loyalty to a particular language, but also the functional value of each of these. Language attitude is an instrument which allows successful language policy to be constructed, and also informs about the language identification of speaker, as well as about language status and prestige.
    Artykuł analizuje literaturę naukową dotyczącą badań w zakresie kształtowania postawy językowej, a także poglądy dydaktyków w kwestii socjolingwistycznej wykładni pojęcia postawy językowej. Wytyczono kluczowe kierunki badawcze w zakresie budowania postawy językowej oraz podkreślono szczególną wagę zgromadzonej wiedzy w przedmiotowej kwestii oraz aspekty badań w zakresie kształtowania postawy językowej w nauce ukraińskiej. Zbadanie kwestii kształtowania postawy językowej jest poważnym tematem współczesnego dyskursu naukowego, gdyż język pełni swoje społeczno-kulturowe funkcje. Znajomość postawy językowej umożliwia podjęcie skutecznych działań w zakresie planowania polityki językowej oraz kształtowania tożsamości nosicieli języka. Postawa językowa w życiu społecznym pozwala zarówno oceniać stopień lojalności wobec konkretnego języka, jak i wnioskować o funkcjach, które język pełni w społeczeństwie. Jest ona instrumentem pozwalającym zbudować efektywną politykę językową, wskazać na językowe utożsamienie nosiciela i wywieść wnioski o reputacji i stopniu poszanowania języka.
