Aim. The use of feedback (including peer-generated feedback) for learning has been widely investigated across many fields of study, however, no research into its use in Translation studies has been conducted yet. To fill in this gap, the present small-scale study was carried out at a university in Lithuania. It investigated undergraduate translation students’ feedback on their peers’ ESP oral performance by addressing the main research question: what areas are identified as those that need further work on? Methods. The present research was conducted with the participation of 42 undergraduate students who were majors in Translation studies. To carry out the research, qualitative methodology was chosen. The data were drawn from the study participants’ feedback sheets and investigated using inductive content analysis. Results.  The study resulted in the identification and detailed description of four major categories and ten subcategories that reflect the areas that call for further work on, including the study participants’ presentation content, the use of language, presentation delivery mode, and the use of slides. Conclusion. The findings lead to the conclusion that peer feedback, as used in this study, can be viewed as a tool providing its receivers with an opportunity for learning as it supports and directs them toward further improvement.

The processes of visual attention and stimulus detection are a key stage of perception. In the presented studies we tested the role of the genesis (automatic vs. reflective) and source (internal vs. external stimuli) of emotions in the detection of new stimuli (close to or distant from the fixation point). We expected (1) a narrowing of the field of attention in the case of automatic emotion elicitation or internal sources of emotion; (2) an extension of attention field in the case of reflective processes or external sources of emotion. In Study 1 (N = 90) we used explicit presentation of sentences eliciting emotions. In Study 2 (N = 60) we used degraded presentation (32 ms + masking) of words charged with affect. The hypotheses were partly confirmed by the data collected. We found that in the case of eliciting emotions with automatic origin or internal source detection times were significantly shorter for stimuli occurring close to the fixation point. In the case of reflective emotion eliciting condition and external emotion source, no significant differences were observed in reaction times between stimuli close to and distant from the fixation point.

Opis:
The paper critically examines the thesis, popular in the literature, that Leopold Blaustein’s aesthetics is first and foremost a phenomenological discipline. I argue that the “phenomenological” nature of Blaustein’s philosophy follows from Brentano and Twardowski, rather than from Husserl. I therefore claim that Blaustein’s aesthetics is determined by two equally important themes: (1) a descriptive-psychological and (2) a “phenomenological” one. The article is structured as follows. The introduction situates Blaustein’s aesthetics within classical aesthetics. Section 1 reconstructs the Brentanian background of Blaustein’s aesthetics. Section 2 contains a discussion of Blaustein’s assessment of Twardowski’s theory of presentations, which is followed, in Section 3, by an analysis of Blaustein’s example descriptions of aesthetic experiences. These descriptions are discussed in Section 4, which also reconstructs the main elements of Blaustein’s phenomenology of aesthetic experiences. Against this background, the question of the alleged psychologism of Blaustein’s aesthetics is addressed in Conclusions.

Opis:
Not everybody realizes that besides architectural monuments built in the previous century Łódź also owns a wonderful example of modern painting. Hidden in the neo-Gothic church dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary the picture of Our Lady is one of the oldest artistic works in the town. In its long history the painting was given various titles: starting from the Dolorous or Glorious, through the Immaculate, Assumed, Merciful, to even being taken by some people for a copy of the picture of Our Lady of Ostra Brama. However, it is most often referred to as Our Lady of Bałuty, or just Our Lady of Łódź. In the work the history of the church and of the painting were followed, with paying special attention to separating legends from facts. Attempts were made to prove that the opinion about the painting in the Łódź church being a copy of the picture from Ostra Brama is unjustified; it is only the same iconographic type. It represents painting that is relatively rarely encountered in art. The bust of Mary without the Infant, with her hands crossed on the breast, expresses several truths about the Virgin. It is a sort of synthesis of three iconographic motifs: the Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation and the Assumption. The way to announcing the dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption was especially turbulent and the process lasted from the beginnings of Christianity. Undoubtedly these truths are linked with each other. By the Assumption we also worship Mary's Immaculate Conception. Artists created paintings and sculptures presenting mariological truths. However, the iconography of these dogmas was similar, or even identical. This resulted from the very fact that they co-existed, as well as from their relatively late announcement by the Pope. The picture of the Immaculate Virgin was often changed and the moment of the Assumption was emphasized. The element that connected these two dogmas was the scene of the Annunciation, in which Mary's fiat united the Immaculate Conception, the virginal maternity and the divine Assumption of God's Mother. This is why the way of presenting Mary in the scene of the Annunciation is analogical to the pictures of the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption, in which Mary's gesture is significant: it is touching the heart or joining her hands in prayer. It is also important that Mary is presented without the Infant, owing to which the painting joins the group of scenes in which the artists had to show a composition of God's Mother without Jesus, but in spiritual communion with God the Father. The painting of God's Mother in the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary in Łódź closely connects the Immaculate Conception to the Assumption, and also, owing to the specific position of the hands – to the Annunciation. The very fact that in Łódź since 1364 there has been a parish with such a dedication as well as the connection between these dogmas had effect on formation of such an image of God's Mother. Probably this iconographic type is derived from the Netherlandish graphic arts of the 16th century, that gradually passed to Eastern Europe. This is the way that the model could have reached Poland. The picture of God's Mother in Łódź is not a copy of the painting from Ostra Brama. They both represent a similar iconographic type, and what follows from it, they are presented in a similar arrangement. However, there are too many elements that are different to say it is a copy. It is not known who was the painter and from what school he came. He undoubtedly knew the works of Netherlandish and Italian masters, which is proven by the way Madonna was painted. There are no documents speaking about conservation of the painting, which makes it impossible to date the work precisely. It is possible that it was founded by Paweł Łódź Kubowicz in 1639, as in 1718 it was already considered miraculous.

According to the assumption accepted, self-presentation actions have the character of a communication game in which at least one participant is trying to make the desired impression on others. A three layer model of analysis has been used to describe them, referring to Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of language games. Opis:
In this paper, the evolution of the style of Caravaggio had been traced and, focusing on the selected images it had been proved that the methods used by that eminent painter can successfully be applied during the creation of modern, effective multimedia presentations. The strength of Caravaggio was in its simplicity and mundane. For indicated formal measures may be included, inter alia: the elimination of tonally extended second plan and replace it with a dark, uniform background. Caravaggio calmed down composition painting almost monochromatic paintings, which emphasizes the foreground, as well as the keynote message. In the paper it was emphasized that exactly the same objectives should be guided in the creation of multimedia presentations, extracted from unnecessary embellishments that irrupt to the fore dispersing attention. Based on the analysis of selected paintings, in the article, review of procedures associated with the colors of multimedia presentations, extremely important in creating multimedia presentations and highlighting media had been proposed. Several theories related to the psychology of color had been also presented, and also sought to answer the question of why we should not trust psychologists boundlessly.
Caravaggio „uspokoił” kompozycję, malując niemal monochromatyczne obrazy uwypuklające plan pierwszy, przekaz i myśl przewodnią.

A combined analysis of enzyme inhibition and activation is presented, based on a rapid equilibrium model assumption in which one molecule of enzyme binds one molecule of substrate (S) and/or one molecule of a modifier X. The modifier acts as activator (essential or non-essential), as inhibitor (total or partial), or has no effect on the reaction rate (v), depending on the values of the equilibrium constants, the rate constants of the limiting velocity steps, and the concentration of substrate ([S]). Different possibilities have been analyzed from an equation written to emphasize that v = Ł([X]) is, in general and at a fixed [S], a hyperbolic function. Formulas for Su (the value of [S], different from zero, at which v is unaffected by the modifier) and vsu (v at that particular [S]) were deduced. In Lineweaver-Burk plots, the straight lines related to different [X] generally cross in a point (P) with coordinates (Su, vsu). In certain cases, point P is located in the first quadrant which implies that X acts as activator, as inhibitor, or has no effect, depending on [S]. Furthermore, we discuss: (1) the apparent Vmax and Km displayed by the enzyme in different situations; (2) the degree of effect (inhibition or activation) observed at different concentrations of substrate and modifier; (3) the concept of Ke, a parameter that depends on the concentration of substrate and helps to evaluate the effect of the modifier: it equals the value of [X] at which the increase or decrease in the reaction rate is half of that achieved at saturating [X]. Equations were deduced for the general case and for particular situations, and used to obtain computer-drawn graphs that are presented and discussed. Formulas for apparent Vmax, Km and Ke have been written in a way making it evident that these parameters can be expressed as pondered means.

The Bologna Accords have introduced a series of changes which aimed to restructure education and led to the creation of the European Higher Education Area. One of the effects brought about by the Bologna Accord is a decrease of significance of scientific research at the BA level. Numerous academic courses, German philology included, are torn between their traditional teaching methods and orientation towards practical aspects. In order to resolve this conflict, one should address the question of what content needs to be introduced into the syllabus of German philology studies so as to minimise this clash. A considerable deficit can be observed among other fields also in the domain of rhetoric, which is understood here as a skill of intentional goal-oriented communication ranging from monologue to dialogue and including presentations, reports (monologue) as well as discussions and debates (dialogue). The following paper attempts to highlight the most important aspects of rhetorical education and to propose preliminary didactic and methodological solutions that could be implemented in German philology courses.
