Opis:
The paper presents the results of quantitative research using the diagnostic poll method, carried out as part of an international project which involved 440 teacher students from the Polish-Belarusian borderland. The research focused on self-assessed level of information management, team work skills, and recognition of one’s own time perspective. The text only refers to one aspect of the competence, i.e., attitude to time. The findings show that the participants function in three temporal dimensions. The majority of the respondents are future-oriented. More than half of them sometimes waste time doing something meaningless. The vast majority of the students act upon the belief that what will happen to them in the future only depends on their effort, but many also declare a fatalistic attitude to life and the belief they have made wrong decisions in the past. In the article, we suggest the need to equip young people with instruments allowing them to create themselves, their lives and the world around them in the context of the foresight concept.

Opis:
The process of globalization in scientific literature is defined in a very varied way, first of all, because it is a complex, multi-dimensional and multiaspectual process. R. Robertson presents the most general and universal definition of globalization which nowadays has become the reference for formulating different definitions. According to him globalization is a set of processes which make the social world as one. A similar general formulation of this process can be found in A. Giddens’s writings – globalization is an intensification of world-wide social relations. The process of cultural globalization is proceeding before our eyes. We can observe and analyse it in every respect. However, until it lasts, it is hard to foresee what shape will take a predominant current of transformations in the contemporary culture. Today there is domination of the Western culture, particularly the American one. However, economists forecast that even in the first half of the 21st century the economies of China and India will become the world’s largest economies. Then, as it was already in the past, they will influence transformations occurring in culture in a significant way.

Opis:
One of the most substantial interdisciplinary topics in the study of contemporary culture is change in social time, which is expressed in the compression of time (and space) and changing relationships between the past, present, and future. Research and analysis situate the present in an exceptional position in contemporary culture, providing us with the term ‘culture of the present.’ At the same time, however, we are dealing with a phenomenon labeled the ‘explosion of memory’—an astounding multidirectional and multifaceted rise in interest in the past. It is therefore worthwhile to investigate the structures and mechanisms of collective memory, as well as how the past is defined in contemporary culture, from the perspective of time as a social and cultural phenomenon. Questions should be asked regarding the mechanisms that unite the dominance of the present in culture with a rising interest in the past. The perspective of social time reveals that the ‘culture of the present,’ the current dominating forms of memory intensification, and the heightened awareness of the past, are influenced by the same or similar factors. These include new media and communication technologies, as well as consumption and popular culture, which change the structure of time, condense the time horizon, alter the manner in which the past is experienced, and modify the mechanisms of collective memory.

This article is about social and cultural time as a constant and recurrent motive in Zygmunt Bauman’s work. Time and detemporalisation processes, continuity and mutability, permanency and episodicity are all sometimes more, sometimes less clearly outlined but always present themes in his analyses of modernity, postmodernity, globalisation, consumption, consumer society, contemporary social polarisation, and the condition of the socially excluded. This recurrent presence of the temporal dimension in Bauman’s writings means that his entire work can be viewed as an original, multidimensional, coherent, consistent and also very interesting voice on time and its vicissitudes in our present world. Bauman’s contribution to the temporal analysis of our age is presented against the broader backdrop of contemporary reflection on the issue of time.

Our working hypothesis is that the digital culture is remodeling a temporal affect of existence. We attempt to describe how our experience of present time is altered by the increase of digital memory, together with the progressive disappearance of « memory recall » and expectation. This altered presence opens up loopholes which could be called dreams, desire, promise, latency or God. Thus anticipatory algorithm and data translation of present actions of the subject are not a definitive tragedy of our time.

Opis:
The author characterizes the spread of nowist culture as a global phenomenon consisting in the compression of the time frame and the emergence of an extended present absorbing the past and the future into the compact time of global society. These results of the impact of technological development, the spread of communication technologies, new media, consumption culture, the market, and advertising have a negative influence on the life of the individual, the permanency of culture, and the transmission of knowledge. The author claims that we must therefore discover anew the value of permanency. Local factors have a modifying influence on global processes. In Polish society these are historically conditioned elements of the presentist culture (the communist heritage, the domination of peasant culture, the weakness of urban culture, Catholic culture) and the effects of the systemic transformation. When time was discovered to be an economically measurable value, its place came to be occupied by work. People higher on the economic ladder are characterized by a deficit of time, in contrast to lower income groups, who rather suffer from an excess of time. The author emphasizes that time could become a source of social inequalities in nowist culture.

Opis:
The fi rst part of this article brings the author’s reply to the participants of the panel discussion of his book Culture as Verb (Anna Łebkowska, Jakub Momro, Tomasz Rakowski and Dorota Wolska). In the second part he outlines his premises and explains the analytical vocabulary that has enabled him to move from an active to a passive ‘verbal’ understanding of culture. He also draws a broad outline of prospective new research that would complement his project. Central to it is the exploration of what he believes is the dominant contemporary cultural experience, which is based on active participation. To characterize its most important features and forms we should make use of the following, newly defi ned analytical concepts – passivity, the present moment, immersion, and testimonial authority.

Opis:
This essay examines Marcin Tkaczyk’s “The antinomy of future contingent events,” with an eye towards clarifying the roles played by philosophical notions of propositions, events, the pre-sent, the relativity of time, and Tkaczyk’s notion of a “sphere of culture.” The essay concludes by examining what support might be offered for Tkaczyk’s claim that people can to some degree change the past.
Artykuł analizuje tekst „Antynomia przyszłych zdarzeń przygodnych” Marcina Tkaczyka, sku¬¬piając się na wyjaśnianiu ról odgrywanych przez filozoficzne pojęcia zdań, zdarzeń, teraźniej¬szo¬ści, względności czasu i użytego przez Tkaczyka pojęcia „sfery kultury”. Tekst kończy się analizą kwestii, w jaki sposób można udzielić wsparcia tezie Tkaczyka, że ludzie mogą do pewnego stopnia zmienić przeszłość.

This study is a piece of pilot research on the aristocratic library of Count Jozef Esterházi in his Čeklís Mansion (the present-day Bernolákovo in Slovakia). The main source for the research comprises the extant catalogue of this library from the year 1749, currently deposited in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest, and its published transcription. The authors present some basic biographical data of Jozef Esterházi and, in this context, discuss the character, development, and orientation of his library from various perspectives. They also inform about Poland-related items in Esterházi's collection, including a seventeenth-century print related to Poland, which the authors of this study identified among the holdings of the University Library in Bratislava.

The aim of the article is to present the interdisciplinary theoretical framework for the analysis of the constellation of temperature and desire as well as its representations in literature and culture, which have not been the subject of a broad reflection in the area of literary and cultural studies so far. The question therefore is: What is the role of the literary, iconographic and media discourses of temperature in the processes of the creating and transformations of emotional cultures, social phenomena, political condi-tions, and last but not least in the critical reflection of these processes.
