Opis:
The restriction of the input set in the form of a positive cone of the space is not always correct. For instance, while studying the organ of vision, people are limited not only to positive, but also to radiation with not very high energies, because excessively intense can disturb the visual organ. In this particular case, a convex body of a linear space is a fairly acceptable model of the set of input signals. Therefore, we consider linear predicates with this domain of definition.

Using the notion of predicate in the sense of an element structuring the sentence at the surface level, G. Gross arrives at an interpretation of linguistic facts that is valid for those who adopt the concept of semantic predicate as a tool for analysis. It belongs to the abstract level of meaning and is considered to be an essential part of the mechanism for disambiguation and selecting the meaning of lexemes or grammatical structures. This mechanism is particularly important in the context of machine translation where it is necessary to choose, in the bilingual transfer dictionary, the accurate equivalent of a polysemic lexeme in the target language.

In the paper we formulate a sufficient criterion in order for the first order theory with finite set of axioms to be represented by definitions in predicate calculus. We prove the corresponding theorem. According to this criterion such theories as the theory of equivalence relation, the theory of partial order and many theories based on the equality relation with finite set of functional and predicate symbols are represented by definitions in the first-order predicate calculus without equality.

Category formants – their place in (semantic and formal) language structure The author argues that the so-called category some of the grammaticalized segments of the corresponding semantic fields that are especially important for successful linguistic communication. She presents semantic categorical paradigms in Polish and in Macedonian, along with their formal correlates, i.e., categorical markers. She states that in the course of time, the old postpositional bound markers, suffixes and infixes are often eliminated, while the prepositional markers (prefixes, prepositions, verbal particles…) multiply. The Macedonian situation demonstrates that this type of evolution is accelerated in multilingual environment. Formanty kategorialne – ich miejsce w (semantycznej i formalnej) strukturze języka Autorka dowodzi, że tzw. formanty kategorialne należą do tych gramatycznych segmentów pól semantycznych, które są szczególnie ważne dla pomyślnej komunikacji językowej. Przedstawia semantyczne paradygmaty kategorii w języku polskim i macedońskim oraz ich formalne, tj. kategorialne, wskaźniki. Stwierdza, że z biegiem czasu stare, postpozycyjne, związane wskaźniki, sufiksy, infiksy, partykuły werbalne są często eliminowane, a wskaźniki przyimkowe (przedrostki, przyimki, cząstki słowne…) multiplikowane. Sytuacja w Macedonii świadczy o tym, że ten rodzaj ewolucji ulega przyspieszeniu w środowisku wielojęzycznym.

Artykuł poświęcony jest kategorialnemu statusowi przysłówków we współczesnym języku białoruskim. Przysłówek jest uważany za jednostkę pochodną, która łączy cechy rzeczowników i predykatów. Pokazano, że przysłówek nie należy do żadnej z tych klas. Przysłówki powstają z rzeczowników tracących znaczenia konkretne i wyabstrahowane. Ta część mowy jest bliższa predykatom, ponieważ może być głównym predykatem w wypowiedzi. Ponadto czasami przysłówek wyraża dodatkową predykatywę i w rezultacie komplikuje strukturę semantyczną zdania. Jednak główną jego funkcją jest modyfikator okolicznikowy, który nie jest predykatem.
Artykuł poświęcony jest kategorialnemu statusowi przysłówków we współczesnym języku białoruskim. Przysłówek jest uważany za jednostkę pochodną, która łączy cechy rzeczowników i predykatów. Some remarks on Polish and Slovene analytic causatives paraphrased by adjectivesThe article is devoted to the analytic causative predicates. The data is collected from Polish and Slovene. The basic methodological device is a paraphrase which obligatorily includes an adjective. Special attention is paid to operator verbs, which often have their own semantic features. Some of them are verbs of transfer, others – verbs of motion. In most cases, however, they are causatives which denote change of features. Apart from the basic causative category, the material is classified according to its semantic features, including especially inchoativeness, terminativeness and restorativeness. In conclusion it is emphasized that analytic causatives show their semantic parameters more explicitly than is the case with verbal units and that they demonstrate considerable semantic condensity. Z problematyki polskich i słoweńskich analityzmów kauzatywnych z parafrazą przymiotnikowąArtykuł dotyczy analitycznych realizacji predykatu kauzatywnego. Materiał obejmuje przykłady z języków polskiego i słoweńskiego. Podstawowym narzędziem badawczym jest parafraza, która obligatoryjnie zawiera przymiotnik. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na czasowniki operatorowe, które często mają samodzielne znaczenie. Niektóre z nich są czasownikami transferu, inne – czasownikami ruchu. Jednakże wiele z nich to także kauzatywa, określające zmianę cechy. Oprócz nadrzędnej kategorii kauzatywnej badane kauzatywa zostały poklasyfikowane ze względu na kategorię inchoatywności, terminatywności, restauratywności. We wnioskach podkreślono, że konstrukcje analityczne bardziej eksplicytnie niż jednostki werbalne ujawniają w swej budowie parametry semantyczne, jak również to, że charakterystyczna jest dla nich duża kondensacja semantyczna.

Built in argument positions and the propositions intensional completenessThe paper discusses issues concerning the potential influence of built in argument positions on the propositions intensional completeness. According to the chosen scientific approach the distribution of determiners is a reflex of the propositions completeness, there seem to exist however such structures in which one of the argument positions is blocked due to being built into the predicate. The intensional value of such positions may vary and theoretically reflect the propositions definiteness / indefiniteness (intensional completeness). Predicates such as: търся implicate a locative argument position, which is inherently indefinite, but does not seem to reflect the distribution of determiners.

The paper aims at presenting the contemporary usage of the verb shall in Modern English. The traditional principles governing the usage of shall constitute a complex paradigm in which the implications of different forms change according to the person of the subject. The statistics show that the verb shall experienced a dramatic fall in frequency of use between the early 1960s and 1990s. The author is aiming at presenting the evolution of the verb shall throughout the centuries, its reorganization and the way it has altered. The Old English shall expressed obligation/necessity whereas the Middle English usage indicated to the predicative element of the verb in question. Furthermore, the author explores the difference in application between will and shall. The semantic shift of 'shall' appears to be a natural consequence of the competition it lost to will. Moreover, in 'shall' seems to be retracting to the narrow niche of seldom usage. The article also indicates to the use of shall in present-day English both in American and British varieties. In American English, which is commonly assumed to be more advanced and open to change than British English, 'shall' seems to survive in the contexts where it expresses deontic meaning.

The article discusses the model classifying German motivated words that takes its origin in the work of Fillmore entitled "The Case for Case" (1968) and is used by Hans Wellmann in his description of German word formation processes in 1984-1998 (Duden. Die Grammatik, Band 4). The model stands in agreement with the rule of assigning the semantic roles to individual parts of the sentence, which was formulated in German language by Wolfgang Motsch (2004). Renata Grzegorczykowa and Jadwiga Puzynina used the same rule in Polish word formation in their „Gramatyka współczesnego języka polskiego. Morfologia.” (1999). Each time, the model classifies the derivative words with reference to their semantic role and the motivating part of the explicatory paraphrase. Such derivatives may be, at the same time, classified according to their suiffxes. In the case of compounds and case government structures that are motivated by the functioning in the particular language verbal phrase, the motivational aspect comes from the particular verbal phrase (used as an explicating paraphrase) – its motivational argument and reference argument. The latter one belongs to the verb case government present in the explicating phrase and is added to the compound on its left side. The model described in the article is also used in order to describe the Danish derivatives which appear as equivalents of German words in the literary translations.

The analysis of the content of predicates that link to the preposition da will help to answer the question of the extent to which the choice of a preposition is determined by the knowledge of the experienced activities and/or the predicate itself (its selective features) or if it is the result of convention.

The author analyses the structure of the predicative expression, i.e. a mor-phosyntactic construction functioning as the so-called constitutive predicate of the proposition in question. She illustrates her analysis with examples from Polish and from Macedonian – two languages whose grammatical systems are maximally typologicaly opposed in the frame of the Slavic linguistic group. She states that the predicative expression is composed of 1) constitutive form of verbum finitum and 2) its adjuncts formalized as adverbia and/or adverbialia responding to the questions: when? how long? how? in which mood? in which way? and carrying supplementary information from the semantic domains of the grammatical categories characteristic of the finite verb, such as ‘time’, ‘aspect’, or ‘mood’; most numerous are those informing (a) on the location of the referred to event on the time-axis or (b) on the procedure leading to the realization of that event.
