The article describes qualitative research into the interpretation of the “life” phenomenon in 12 selected pre-school children. These are children with special educational needs from the Special Nursery School for children with more defects. Their individual disorders and handicaps may affect their comprehension of the life phenomenon. The research techniques applied were as follows: an analysis of children’s drawings, a non-structured interview and selection of pictures specially prepared in advance. The results achieved are presented in general, showing also several exemplary case studies of specific pupils with the specification of their handicap. The article discusses possible effects of children’s handicaps on the process of their forming comprehension of the common life phenomenon.

The article presents pre-school education in Poland in the context of recent reports of the European Commission (Strategy Europe 2020). It can be seen – analyzing trends in Europe and their influence on decisions taken at a national level – that among the aims of the Ministry of Education a high place has been granted to the idea of universalisation of pre-school education. The main area of action is the solution suggested by the Ministry of Education, to create the so-called: other (alternative) forms of preschool education. Is it an effective solution and what will be its fate? The article is an attempt to answer this question.

The adopted international rules for educational programmes have stimulated their reform at the national and local levels. It is interesting to observe how individual countries have approximated them in pre-primary education. This is possible by a comparative approach, which is the content of this study. It is based on results of an analysis of national educational programmes in pre-primary education in three neighbouring countries – in the Czech Republic, Poland and the Slovak Republic. It points at what is basically conceptually the same and what is different in the curricula of the studied countries as a result of the trends in curricula in the OECD countries at the beginning of the 21st century.

The main topic of this paper is the issue of the development of scientific literacy of students in the field of pre-school and elementary school pedagogy. Anthropological concept of rites the passage in the sphere of pre-school education was applied in the paper. In the case of the ritual of appointing as preschool child one faces specific ritual as regards the place in which it takes place (kindergarten institution) and persons to which it is applied (children at the age of 3 and 4). The aim of a ceremony is socialization of an individual and integration with a group in the first place. Rites of passage share with the analyzed preschool ritual such features as rigid role scheme, structure of a ceremony of ritual actions, functions of a ritual, and the fact that by this ritual integration and cohesion of a group is maintained and the children’s bound with kindergarten workers is augmented. Although the ceremony of appointing as preschool child does not change the status of an individual, it performs important role related to role playing, international functions and the functions set on auto-identification of a child (that stem from group activity). Moreover, by the ceremony the youngest children can show their parents that they learn new abilities, partly different than the ones they experience at their homes. Methodological approach used in the study can be labeled as participant secret observation, close to the “participant-as-observer” category. The ceremony was observed in one of kindergartens in Toruń, in 26 children group, labeled as “Ladybirds”. Field observation was completed, firstly, by the photographic documentation (done during the ritual), secondly, by the ritual scenario (written by the kindergarten teachers), and thirdly, by the interview with the tutor of the observed group of children.

W artykule autorka opisuje konkretne mechanizmy neoliberalizacji edukacji przedszkolnej w Polsce na przykładzie etnograficznej analizy przedstawienia teatralnego - punktu kulminacyjnego wrocławskiego projektu edukacyjnego „Przedsiębiorczy Przedszkolak”. Dowodzi, jak neoliberalna ideologia w oparciu o strategię marketingu niszowego uwzględnia specyfikę grup konsumenckich kierując doń ściśle wyspecjalizowane marketingowe przekazy i jak pod ukryciem bajki - podsuwa dzieciom pożądane wzorce zachowań.
In the article the author describes specfic mechanisms of neoliberalization at work in pre-school education in Poland. The argument is based on an ethnographic analysis of a theatre performance which crowned one of Wrocław’s educational projects called “Enterprising Pre-school Student”. It demonstrates the workings of neoliberal ideology, which—based on the niche marketing strategy—targets specific needs of particular consumer groups. Addressing children with a specialised marketing message, the strategy uses fairy tales as a tool and cover for instilling desired behaviour patterns in them.

In the present paper, we analyse the differences in the use of pre-school education from the point of view of local social citizenship theory. Adopting this perspective means that, the level of diffusion of pre-school education reflects the level of entitlement to this type of education, an ingredient of the "social element of citizenship". Thus, in accordance with Marshall and his followers, we consider social citizenship most of all as a political phenomenon. Considering both economic (labour market conditions) and cultural (commune type: village vs. town) conditioning of local demand for pre-school education services, we shall concentrate on analysing local, political conditions of fulfilling the entitlement to this type of education. We shall also test the hypothesis, widespread in hitherto literature on the subject, of the basic difference factor for the participation in pre-school education being the commune's own income per capita. In the present paper, we demonstrate that the difference in political activity of the inhabitants of communes, measured by local turnout (in parliamentary elections) is correlated to the level of fulfilment of pre-school education entitlement to a much higher extent than the differences between the commune's own income per capita. The present paper demonstrates the results of the first stage of analysis of the political conditions of local social citizenship within the "Local social citizenship in social policy: the example of care services for children under 5"
W niniejszym tekście analizujemy zjawisko zróżnicowania korzystania z edukacji przedszkolnej z perspektywy koncepcji lokalnego obywatelstwa społecznego. Przyjęcie tej perspektywy oznacza, że poziom upowszechnienia edukacji przedszkolnej jest dla nas odzwierciedleniem poziomu realizacji uprawnienia do tej edukacji - składnika „społecznego elementu obywatelstwa”. Obywatelstwo społeczne, zgodnie z tradycją Marshallowską, traktujemy jako przede wszystkim fenomen polityczny. Uwzględniamy gospodarcze uwarunkowania lokalnej polityki społecznej w zakresie edukacji przedszkolnej, jednak uwagę koncentrujemy na lokalnych, politycznych uwarunkowaniach obywatelstwa społecznego, w tym szczególnie tych związane z różnymi formami partycypacji politycznej mieszkańców. W niniejszym artykule pokazujemy, że zróżnicowanie aktywności politycznej mieszkańców gmin, mierzone lokalną frekwencją wyborczą (w wyborach parlamentarnych), w znacznie większym stopniu niż zróżnicowanie w dochodach gminy per capita jest powiązane z różnicami w poziomie realizacji uprawnienia do edukacji przedszkolnej.
