Opis:
In the last decade, the growing interest in the subject of musicians’ mental practice has produced a significant increase in research on mental and instrumental practice. More than half of all the studies concerns professional musicians, and relatively little research is conducted on children or adolescents. The article will describe research on the mental practice of teenagers attending music schools in Poland and Germany. Questionnaire surveys answer the question of whether young people use mental practice, how they do it, and what the content of mental training while practicing an instrument is. The analysis suggests that gifted adolescents from both countries (1) do not use mental rehearsal very often and (2) use mental practice strategies in a similar way. What they differ in is the frequency of using mental practice as an integral part of their instrumental learning, using musical-analytical strategy, and the quality of mental practice. The study indicates the need to teach mental practice and its importance in increasing the effectiveness of instrumental practice.

Opis:
This paper explores parental (particularly mothers’) support in the daily lives of children with allergies in a Swedish context. An ordinary life is established by making comparisons to what other children without allergies presumably can do (and eat). Although the parents’ goal is to support their child in managing allergies, neither their practical nor their interactional strategies work in a clear-cut direction to promote the child’s ordinary life and identity. On the contrary, parents’ accounts convey that they function just as much against an everyday life and the child’s identity. When managing family relations, parents expect immediate family members (specifically grandparents) to understand and accommodate the child’s needs.  However, claims of family responsibility are made through moral tales about lack of support from “generalized others.” Family responsibility is also downplayed in parents’ accounts as demands of support may put parents’ moral self at risk. The strategy of information control in certain situations and (non-family) relations used to keep the child safe may risk stigmatizing the child, alternatively, making the child into a social threat. One of the conclusions that could be drawn from this study is that claims of family support may be contradictory to other cultural principles that ascribe responsibilities between families and individuals, as the principles of individual freedom and autonomy.

Opis:
This paper investigates the question of how schools cope with the cultural change in the form of the increasingly common migration experience of a student and which of the strategies used determine the educational success of a migrant student. The focus is on school intercultural practices. The paper presents the result of qualitative research conducted in 2013-2019, which aimed to show the perspective of a Polish middle school student and her parent who, emigrating to the USA and re-emigrating to Poland, gained a comparative scale of inclusion practices applied in relation to a migrant student as well as awareness of the strategies which contributed to her mastery of the second language and a lasting attitude of favorableness towards the language and its culture. In order to include the sociolinguistic context, which is of particular significance for the problem investigated, the case study was expanded by an observation and partially structured interviews. The case report cited emphasizes the impact of specific inclusion practices which are worth attention (and possibly dissemination) as those that evoke positive emotions in the student, reduce the level of anxiety and stress, and focus on boosting the student’s self-confidence - as a result, they support educational success in achieving (acquired) bilingualism - and a lasting attitude towards the second language and the culture to which it gives access.

Opis:
The presented material is a concise report of the research on the ‘condition’ of initial teacher education provided at universities in Poland in accordance with ‘new’ Ministry standards of 17 January 2012. In the analysis of data collected from 30 universities in May 2015, we focused on models of the organisation of this part of teaching at universities, the ways of constructing the professional curricula, the role and place of practice in the learning processes and the strategy of assessment of the preparation for teaching. Our research result is not quite optimistic. Under the ‘new label’ of standards we still have quasi-traditional approach to initial teacher education. In acquiring the new professional competencies students do not get real support from their academic and school partners. They are not very interesting in building opportunities for transforming learning aiming at transforming teaching.

Opis:
The goal of the present paper is to question the validity of the claim which sees reflection as an important part of the work of an efficient language teacher. A quasi-experiment was conducted by the author in order to determine whether reflection is a factor which can in some way influence the teacher’s capacity to plan a FL lesson effectively, incorporating new technologies. A reflective thinking questionnaire (RTQ, Kember et al., 2000) was administered to assess the level of reflective thinking in 47 university students. Next, their lesson projects were evaluated by two independent experts. The correlational study seems to show that reflection may indeed be a factor which influences the quality of the work of a foreign language teacher in an important way.
