Truth has always been a controversial subject in Aristotelian scholarship. In most cases, including some well-known passages in the Categories, De Interpretatione and Metaphysics, Aristotle uses the predicate ‘true’ for assertions, although exceptions are many and impossible to ignore. One of the most complicated cases is the concept of practical truth in the sixth book of Nicomachean Ethics: its entanglement with action and desire raises doubts about the possibility of its inclusion to the propositional model of truth. Nevertheless, in one of the most extensive studies on the subject, C. Olfert has tried to show that this is not only possible but also necessary. In this paper, we explain why trying to fit practical truth into the propositional model comes with insurmountable problems. In order to overcome these problems, we focus on multiple aspects of practical syllogism and correlate them with Aristotle’s account of desire, happiness and the good. Identifying the role of such concepts in the specific steps of practical reasoning, we reach the conclusion that practical truth is best explained as the culmination of a well-executed practical syllogism taken as a whole, which ultimately explains why this type of syllogism demands a different approach and a different kind of truth than the theoretical one.

Opis:
Training of merchant vessels crew covers not only theoretical knowledge from a given field but also a lot of practical exercises. Simulators play a very important role here as they make it possible to create real life situations experienced at sea and the true behaviour of a vessel in different conditions. They enable demonstrating real actions taken during ship 's engine failure or during any other breakdown. Thanks to this the course participants and students can experience a variety of different situations which may happen both while operating the vessels during their routine work at sea or when something goes wrong or in distress situations. This article presents the simulators which are at Gdynia Maritime University used for training, their use and the prospective of their development. The author concentrated on presenting the significant role of simulators in the process of education and training of seafarers and officers both those from the deck and from the engine room departments. The simulator base is being constantly developed and sometimes the training employs only part of its possibilities and potential; wider use in the process of training may add a lot to increase the level of safety at sea.

The paper describes pedagogical students practical training in modern Russian Teacher Training Universities. The new requirements to higher education in Russian Federation are viewed. Thomas Aquinas holds not only that prudence, the virtue of right practical reasoning, is necessary for living well, but emphatically asserts that it “is the virtue most necessary to human life.” This essay argues that the force of Thomas’ assertion should not be understood as simply contradicting the objection—that “it seems that prudence is not a virtue necessary to living a good life”—with vigor, but rather, as we intend to show, that although all the moral virtues are necessary for the good life, there is a superior importance to the need for prudence, as that whereby the parts of virtuous living are not merely stacked up like building blocks of moral righteousness, but coalesced into a complete whole. To make clear the reasons for this preeminent necessity, we shall first consider the parts and constitution of prudence itself, its relationship to the other virtues, and conclude with its principal act, praeceptum.

Alienated morality. Bernard Williams’ critique of utilitarianism: The paper aims at reconstructing Bernard Williams’ critique of utilitarianism, in order to show that it is primarily motivated by the British philosopher’s opposition to this theory’s understanding of the relationship between the agent and her actions. After discussing Williams’ arguments against what he sees as the oversimplified moral psychology of utilitarianism, and his doubts regarding the coherence between utilitarian objectives and utilitarian methods, the paper will focus on his “argument form integrity”. As we will see, it allows Williams to question utilitarianism’s ability to account for the relationship between the identity of the agent and her actions, and as a result, deny the effectiveness of the notion of utility as a source of moral motivation.

Th e article analyses opportunities and possibilities for synthesis of theory and practice in training of andragogues for vocational activity. Th ese opportunities disclose themselves in vocational practice of students, studying in the programme of Andragogy. Th e modern approach to relationship of theory and practice in studies supposes their unity, though coming into confl ict in the study process sometimes. It is to be emphasized that theoretical and practical training remains to be the components of an integral process. Th ey are linked into the aggregate of diff erent and complementing experiences, which becomes evident in the process of practice. It is the refl ective study model, successfully employed in vocational practice that creates conditions for application of available theoretical knowledge and practical skills in specifi c working situations, gaining of abilities and experience that are necessary for future vocational activity. Th e accomplished empiric research showed the students’ approach to the unity of theory and practice in vocational activity. It also gives evaluation to the expedience of practice for the future vocational activity of andragogues. In the process of practice the respondents disclosed diff erent aspects in employment of theoretical and practical knowledge in practical situations. Th e research also highlighted the merits and demerits of vocational practice in the process of andragogic studies, which enables the department of Andragogy to check once again the quality of implemented studies, to make corrections in the study programme and take it closer to demands of the changing situation. Th eoretical and empiric analysis enabled to ground opportunities and possibilities for the synthesis of theory and practice in the process of studies and training of andragogues for practical activity.

The subject of interest are medical leaflets, which are the texts of different lengths atta- ched to every medicine. From the comparison of the leaflets developed for the same me- dicine in different periods, it results that their unchangeability (structural, cognitive and stylistic) is seeming. The analyses showed that distinct or morę subtle changes are the effect of a clash of two opposing tendencies. On the one hand, a pursuit of preciseness of wording and compactness enforces a use in the leaflet of specialist (Chemical and medical) terms and scientific expressions, and on the other hand - there is morę care on the part of the sender of adjusting the form to the level of a recipient (a layperson) causes that the contents too scientifically formulated are eliminated from the leaflet. The Information especially important is repeated in different parts of the text and additionally exposed by the use of elear segmentation in which every segment is a certain informative entirety.The reasons for the noticeable standardization of the medical leaflet are legał regula- tions that precisely establish the requirements for every leaflet. The ministerial order also forbids marketing activities on the leaflet limiting its function to informing and instruc- ting.

After the publication of Sidereus Nuncius, in the controversy with Ch. Scheiner, Galileo developed several arguments on behalf of the hypothesis that sunspots are contiguous to the surface of the Sun, and presented them in his Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti (Rome 1613). One of them, named by Galileo a Practical Method, advocates very clearly the correctness of the hypothesis. In the paper the method in question is briefly described. It is argued that the Practical Method is not a thought experiment, but rather a mental model proposed precisely in order to solve the problem of sunspots’ location.

In these remarks I put a question mark by the term conscience recalled by Catholics. Their aim isn’t however an attempt to undermine their faith in the causative force of conscience, but to show that it’s theological interpretation is one thing, but it’s practical application is another. It is worth noting that both in the past and in the present they not just function simultaneously, but also in some cases being in conflict. They were and still are undertaken attempts of erasing this conflict or at least to weaken its significance. In my view, it does not serve well the Roman Catholic Church, and also those who seek other guides for their lives and existence with other people. They weaken the trust towards the Church and the conscience in which existence we believe, or at least want to (no matter the religious affiliation).

Philosophical hermeneutics has become an unavoidable reference in the field throughout the twentieth century but has seldom been extended to draw conclusions in the area of political theory. Two intellectuals that have contributed to such a project are Charles Taylor and Gianni Vattimo, although they exhibit some important differences in key aspects of this enterprise, both at the level of the conceptual premises and at that of the prescribed policies and objectives. Here I examine these thinkers’ notion of tradition – an essential feature of hermeneutical theories – its ontological underpinnings, and the place each of them assign to it in sociopolitical decision-making, especially in the context of multicultural societies. In the end, I argue for the superiority of Taylor’s model of understanding and employing tradition in current political and moral debates.

The article presents selected forms of the practical use of anthropology. The main aim of text is not an attempt at a complete presentation of practical anthropology. Fragmentation of the description is testimony to the fact that there have been selected only two categories belonging to the broad context of practical anthropology: applied anthropology and the project which extend their range beyond academic discourse. However, the character of anthropology is used to achieve their objectives. The publication is primary concerned with the status of the practical form of anthropology in anthropological discourse, its thematic and methodical range. This article consists of four parts. In the first I show theoretical approach to the development of Polish social work as an academic discipline from the 60s to the present time. I focus on the changes introduced in the education of staff of social assistance and how it developed as the autonomy of social work at Polish universities. The second part is dedicated to the research methodology, constructed purposes, the proposed methods, techniques and the conduct and organization of research. In the third part I analyse the collected results of research devoted to the general feedback on the direction of social work and detailed, addressing specific practical subjects such as practical training in education, social project, professional practice, specialization practice, the areas of social work. The last part are the conclusions of the research and identification of the main dilemmas related to the academic education of future social welfare staff.
