Opis:
In this work we present a prototype circuit to harvest energy from radio waves or through magnetic coupling based on a stack of full-wave rectifiers with transistors working on sub-threshold region. This circuit will use as an input a field-to-voltage converter capable of outputting a 200mV waveform and is able to self-start without any other energy sources. The circuit presented here is a proof of concept energy-harvesting circuit powering a low frequency ring oscillator which acts as the load. The circuit is designed, simulated and tested in a standard CMOS process, AMS CMOS 0.35 μm.

Opis:
Purpose of this article is the presentation of potential application power harvesting by piezoelectric materials. Piezoelectric are materials, which transfer ambient vibration energy into electric one. Under the influence of elastic strain piezoelectric, the electric field is created in the material (simple piezoelectric effect). However, under the influence of the electric field piezoelectric's dimensions change (inverse piezoelectric effect). Thanks to these properties piezoelectric's were the focus of much research. Many attempts have been made using this type of funding, leading to the development of technologies: from the construction of various electromechanical generators after the surgical placement of piezoelectric materials in the flesh of animals. Last time many sources in micro scale become very popular because the generation of energy from piezoelectric can be conventional alternative for traditional energy sources. With this method we can get cheap and convenient source of energy. In the paper examples of devices, which are supplied by this kind of energy as well as types of piezoelectrics (PZT, PVDF and PMN-PT), materials used in described examples are presented.

Opis:
Źródła energii odpowiednie dla ww. zastosowań możemy przyporządkować do jednej z kategorii: ruch i wibracje, różnica temperatur, promieniowanie świetlne i fale radiowe.
The paper presents energy harvesting methods suitable for autonomous wireless sensor networks. The average power demand of a typical sensor is between 20-100 žW [1]. In such systems energy is harvested via dedicated circuits. In some cases a measured object can be an energy source. Energy sources adequate for the abovementioned applications can be assigned to one of the categories: movement and vibration, temperature differences, light radiation, radio-frequency waves [1, 2, 3]. An analysis of available solutions in terms of power density or dimensions of power harvesting circuit is required for each energy source. Another important issue is the energy source power characteristic and whether it is controllable. If harvested energy is not stored (battery), a key parameter becomes the average power. In the paper we take a close look at energy harvesting approaches, along with the underlying physics and the power output. The achievable power ranges from 0,1 žW/cm2 to 15 mW/cm2 (depending on the size of the energy harvesting unit). The highest power can be achieved with photovoltaic cells under direct exposure to the sunlight.

Opis:
This paper considers a fading cognitive multiple access channel (CMAC), where multiple secondary users (SUs), who share the spectrum with a primary user (PU), transmit to a cognitive base station (CBS). A power station is assumed to harvest energy from the nature and then provide power to the SUs. We investigate the power allocation problems for such a CMAC to maximize the SU sum rate under the interference power constraint, the sum transmit power constraint and the peak transmit power constraint of each individual SU. In particular, two scenarios are considered: with successive interference cancellation (SIC) and without SIC. For the first scenario, the optimal power allocation algorithm is derived. For the second scenario, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. We show that the proposed algorithm with SIC outperforms the algorithm without SIC in terms of the SU sum rate, while the algorithm without SIC outperforms the algorithm with SIC in terms of the number of admitted SUs for a high sum transmit power limit and a low peak transmit power limit of each individual SU.

Opis:
Energy harvesting shock absorbers can generate about 15-20 W of electric power for normal suspension velocities. However, higher weight, fail safe characteristics and space limitations have restricted development of regenerative shock absorbers to research prototypes. Power to weight ratio of regenerative shock absorbers can be improved by incorporating motion amplification. In the presented work, an innovative design of energy harvesting shock absorber has been presented that uses motion amplification for improving harvesting efficiency. Apart from improving electric power, the proposed solution is fail safe and can be easily incorporated in existing vehicles with only marginal change in suspension layout. Study includes detailed numerical analysis for vibration transmissibility to investigate comfort and safety. Further, a prototype has been fabricated and experimentation has been performed to compute electric power generated and comfort. Simulations have been performed on real size model with utilization of harvested electric power which indicates about 19% of overall harvesting efficiency.

Opis:
Vibration Energy Harvesting is being investigated for autonomous sensors and actuators that mainly utilize ambient and machine induced vibrations. Recently mechanical motion amplification is incorporated for improving power to weight ratio of vibration harvesters. The present study is motivated to investigate mechanical motion amplification characteristics with different configurations. The parameters investigated are motion amplification ratio, force transmissibility characteristics, weight of the electrical generator, effective damping coefficient achieved and linear nature of damping. Numerical analysis has been performed to compare important characteristics of device operating without amplification to that of with amplification with different configuration. The study has been concluded with comments on application of suitable type of amplification mechanism depending on weight/space constraints and desired effective damping coefficient.

Although there are many articulations of SWIPT architecture implementations, the hardware impairment aspect involved in the SWIPT architecture system is not given much attention. This paper evaluates the performance of SWIPT PS Receiver architecture in the presence of IQ imbalance hardware impairment with 16-QAM transmitter and AWGN channel. The parameters SNR, BER is evaluated in the presence of amplitude, phase imbalance, and PS factor at the SWIPT receiver side. Further, the IQ imbalance is estimated and compensated using a blind compensation algorithm. The system achieved a maximum BER of 10−7 in the presence of amplitude and phase imbalance of 0.2 and 1.6 respectively.

Rising requirements for a new constructions, force engineers to monitor them all day long. An attractive solution seems to be applications of wireless sensors. However, there is a barrier limiting their application, which is the need to supply them with an electrical power over extended period of time without using additional wiring or batteries. The potential solution of this problem seems to be an energy harvesting. This paper proposes a new energy harvesting device based on magnetostrictive material. In the course of the experiments with using Terfenol-D rods as actuators and sensors it has been shown, that the mechanical impact to the magnetic core based on Terfenol-D rod, NdFeB permanent magnets and coil set allowed to obtain an electric power signal enough to supply device of 100 Ohm load on their active state.

Opis:
Low-temperature heat sources have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly for energy generation. The majority of thermal devices in the market (including devices using solar energy, geothermal energy, waste energy, and so on) transform heat into electricity indirectly, requiring mechanical work before producing power. Through the Seebeck effect, the technology that employs a thermoelectric generator (TEG) may directly transform heat energy into electricity. The TEG technology provides several advantages, including compactness, quietness, and the absence of moving components. TEGs have a low thermal and electrical efficiency, which is one of their main drawbacks. Therefore, the performance of a thermoelectric generator is improved by employing liquid evaporation heat transfer in this manuscript. The performance of the thermoelectric was examined experimentally and compared to the liquid evaporation mode under varied heat flux values and different modes of heat transfer in terms of free and forced convection with and without fins. The experimental results revealed that when compared to free convection without fins, adopting forced liquid evaporation convection would improve TEG voltage variation by 435.9%.

Opis:
In this work, one evaluates the electrical power generated by an airless tire equipped with piezoelectric bimorphs on both lateral surfaces of the radially distributed lamellar spokes. Such sheet-like spokes are hinged both toward the wheel drum at the inner annular band, and toward the wheel tread at the outer annular band. Since the hinged spokes are able to transmit tension forces but unable to transmit compression forces, bending and buckling of the spokes occur in the region of contact between the tire and the road. Models for the rolling friction of the airless tire, for the bending and buckling deformation of the spokes, and for the electrical power generated by the airless tire are suggested. Variation of the curvature radii and bending deformations for the spokes in the region of contact with the road are illustrated for various values of the rolling friction coefficient and spoke length. Then, variation of the generated electrical power versus the length of contact is obtained for various travel speeds of the vehicle. One observes that the generated electrical power increases at augmentation of the rolling friction coefficient, spoke length and travel speed. Although the obtained electrical power for the proposed harvesting system is relatively modest, it is not depending on the road roughness, i.e. harvesting becomes possible even on smooth roads, such as highway surfaces.
