Opis:
This paper proposes that the beginning of the Early Iron Age saw the change of the social role and status of women. The study was based on the analysis of dozens of graves attributable to the Lusatian Culture, which spanned the Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Included in the analyses were only graves of individuals, whose sex and age could be anthropologically determined. The hypothesis is justified on the basis of the socio-symbolic dimension of weaving and pottery.

Opis:
The Polish archaeological project excavating at the Nubian sites of Banganarti and Selib concentrated on uncovering domestic architecture: the northeastern and southwestern districts at medieval Christian Banganarti and selected houses of Meroitic date at Selib 2. The conservation and restoration program put the finishing touches on the Raphaelion church in Banganarti and did substantial work on the remains of the earlier churches. The oldest church from Selib 1 was investigated and dated to the 6th–7th century based on a study of a well stratified ceramic assemblage. Pottery from the northern and southern refuse dumps ranged in date from the 9th to the 12th/13th century. A group of liturgical vessels, containing mostly small juglets and chalices, was distinguished in this assemblage. Exploration of the earlier Northern Building revealed pottery contemporaneous with the earliest phase of the church on site. Anthropological research was carried out on skeletal remains from the medieval cemeteries of Selib 1 and from individual graves at Banganarti. The results of ceramic studies and of the anthropological examination are reported in separate appendices to the main report.

The article focuses on pottery vessels discovered during rescue excavation at Ujście, from layers of the former stronghold and city, dated to the period from the second half of the 10th century to the 16th century. The assemblage includes vessel fragments from early medieval period, partly formed as well as completely thrown on a potter’s wheel, and from the late medieval and early modern periods. This highly varied assemblage shows insight into pottery used by inhabitants of Ujście over several hundred years. The article, being only a preliminary analysis, also provides the impetus for the more detailed research on the pottery in the area located in the central River Noteć.

Opis:
The Middle Don Culture, distributed within the Middle and Upper Don River area, is thought to be one of the earliest Eastern European Neolithic cultures, and is dated to the 6th–5th millennium BC. A group of Neolithic sites was found on the right shore of the Voronezh River, and has been named the “Dobroe sites”. The Dobroe 9 settlement is one of few sites in this region at which an assemblage of Middle Don Culture has been recorded in a clear stratigraphic position. The numerous faunal remains, ceramic complex and stone inventory found at this site allows for a reconstruction of the earliest stages of the Neolithic. The elaborated ceramic typology suggests a gradual transformation of the local culture. The particularity of sedimentation process and deposition of artefacts allowed a precise correlation of stone inventory types with early-Neolithic ceramic types. Preliminary reconstructions of palaeoclimate and episodes of human activity for this time period were implemented based on geochemical methods.

The article presents Ashdod and Ashkelon, two harbor cities from the Herodian period (37 BCE–70 CE), located on the south Levantine’s coast. The topic is depicted using the examples of the imported fine and utilitarian wares dated to Early Roman, in specific Herodian, period. Ashdod and Ashkelon were cities located nearby, with very similar history up to the Hellenistic period. After this time their similarities disappeared and the importance in the region changed. This issue is well presented in the pottery assemblage and imports from the whole Mediterranean world.

An analysis of pottery production in ancient Phoenicia reveals not only the land division into city-states in Hellenistic times, but also the blending in individual periods of the multifarious cultural influences reaching in from the western coast of Asia Minor, the Aegean, North African coast and Italy. The native Phoenician tradition clearly loses in significance with the arrival of the Romans in the East.

Opis:
In the late 1990s, Stephan G. Schmid published a chronological typology of Nabataean Painted Fineware (NPFW) that was widely accepted by scholars of Nabataea and Roman Arabia. Tali Erickson-Gini has since raised concerns about parts of his NPFW typology, specifically related to two decoration types dating to the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century CE (Dekorphases 3b and 3c). This article is a response to Erickson-Gini’s critique, published in this volume. We find that there is sufficient evidence to broadly validate Schmid’s proposed dating for the beginning of production of Dekorphases 3b and 3c to the late 1st century and early 2nd century CE, respectively.

Results of multidisciplinary research conducted on the island of Rab (Northeastern Adriatic, Croatia) are presented with particular focus on late Roman rural settlements and their economic activities. The settlement in Podšilo bay, Lopar peninsula, is analyzed in more detail, providing evidence on a vibrant local community engaged in diversified craft activities and the exploitation of local land and marine resources. Along with the specificities of its layout and organization, this site also presents unique possibilities to study environmental factors that influenced its setup and economy, but also its demise, tentatively placed within the 6th century AD.

Opis:
Excavations conducted in 2003 - 2006 at the early Neolithic settlement Łoniowa 80, led to the unveiling of the relics of a long post house connected with Linear Pottery Culture (Želiezovcé phase). Inside, two pits with a contour similar to the rectangular were discovered in the stratigraphic relationship with traces of the house construction. On this basis, we can be sure that both pits were created during the construction or re-construction of the house. At least one of the pits (no. 23), due to the set of artefacts (goblet of a "delicate work", a 12-element flint deposit, two trapezes of Jurassic Cracovian flint), can be considered a grave. In addition, the features of the Malice culture were also discovered; they belong to its classical phase. The second settlement at Żerków provided also materials dated at the Želiezovcé phase of the Linear Pottery Culture. A part of the post longhouse was also unearthed here. The peculiarity of the ceramic from Żerków is the ornament of notch, consisting of three to five holes. This type of ornament has not been detected at Łoniowa house. Both these sites, as well as several neighboring ones, are located in the highest zone of the landscape – on the culmination of hilly ranges. This is a deviation from the typical locating of Linear Pottery Culture sites almost exclusively in the lower parts of slopes and terraces. It can be assumed that the villages developing on the culmination of the Wiśnicz Foothills formed the local settlement network. Extremely small territorial distance between settlements under discussion (ca. 1 km) is probably the result of the fragmentation of the foothills surface. In such an approach they can be treated as one big village consisting of several hamlets. Taking into account the high raw-material potential and the high level of flint technology represented by discovered flint assemblages, we can assume that the settlement was an important point in the route along the Dunajec and Poprad rivers.

The outcrop of the tsunami deposits, about 6 m thick, is located in the archaeological site Tel Askan in the Al Zhraa locality, southwest of the Gaza City. These deposits are unconformably underlain by sand dunes and sharply overlain by a palaeosol. They are pale gray sands mixed with volcanic ash and fine-grained deposits, and are intercalated with peat, few centimetres thick. The sand-sized grains are well rounded and well sorted, and consist mainly of quartz and subordinate of feldspar. Both macro- and microfossils were observed from tsunami deposits. Additionally, rip-up clasts and pottery shards were observed, indicating higher-flow regime. The potteries in tsunami deposits provide evidence for tsunami inundation at distance of about 1 km from the present shoreline.

Steadily growing collection of modern ceramics of the present Podkarpackie Voivodeship, has not yet been fully documented. Historical research demonstrates that Rzeszów, located on the communication route with Russia, occupied a very important position in trade relations with the East and West. The archaeometric study was performed on two fragments of semi-majolica plates and six fragments of glazed jugs, pots and tripod vessels. Vessels were made of fine-grained paste of smectite/illite, kaolinite/illite and kaolinite/illite/smectite clay. The richness of colours and shades is surprising. In the case of semi-majolica, the underglaze paintings were made with the use of frit pigments, while the overglaze ornament was made with the use of Pb-P-Ca-Si paste. ‘Slip-painting’ technique was also used. Glazes were coloured with iron, copper and cobalt compounds of various combinations and concentrations which provided different shades. In the case of semi-maiolica quartz-argillaceous primer with a potassium-bearing substance was applied, surfaces under glazes were covered with flux-bearing substances
