Opis:
As a result of rapid urbanization and huge increase in population in city like Kolkata in West Bengal, India, limits the adequate supply of pure and safe potable water to the city-dwellers. Overcrowding in a congested city like Kolkata possesses threats for contamination of potable water supply which may deteriorate the physical, chemical as well as the bacteriological quality. The sanitary effluents when contaminate the drinking water supply sources which may cause potential health hazards to a huge number of residents and can even lead to spread of infective pathogenic bacterial strains within the population. Keeping this view the present study aims in the survey of potable water samples collected from different sources in and around the Kolkata district. Direct contact and intake of those water samples are very common phenomenon for the people residing in a congested city like Kolkata. A number of water samples from different areas consisting of varying population densities and also having numerous sources are collected and analyzed using commercially available kits. The study mainly based on observing the physical parameters as well as the chemical and bacteriological quantity and quality of the source sample of drinking water mainly from domestic sources as well as the water collected from open water bodies and the municipality supplies including tap water and deep tube wells. The presence of pathogenic bacterial strains along with the coliform contamination of the sample water tested signified a threat to the suitable drinking water in certain selected areas of this crowded city like Kolkata. If the contaminated water sources are not purified the surviving outrageous intensity of fecal E. coli, Vibrio cholera, Salmonella species and other pathogens will pose unfavorable difficulty by upgrading recurrence of water borne infection. The present survey will throw light on the current situation of the quality of potable water in certain areas of Kolkata so that necessary action should be undertaken in those areas to cope up with the situation for the benefit of the people residing there and to provide safe and pure drinking water following WHO guidelines.

Opis:
This study aims at assessing and interpreting groundwater quality using statistical techniques in Otuoke and environs, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Fourteen (14) groundwater samples were collected in the rainy season and analyzed for their physico-chemical and heavy metal contents. Heavy metals were analyzed using Atomic Adsorption Spectrometer. Assessment for drinking purposes revealed that the water is predominantly acidic, with iron and manganese contents exceeding regulatory guidelines in most locations. All other parameters were within WHO and NSDWQ regulatory limits for safe potable water. Water Quality Index revealed that over 73% of the groundwater in the area (11 samples) had good to excellent quality; while the remaining 27% of the groundwater (3 samples) have poor to unsuitable quality for consumption. Assessment of water quality for irrigation purposes was achieved using Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Potential Salinity (PS), Permeability Index (PI), Sodium percentage (Na%), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and Magnesium Adsorption Ratio (MAR). On average SAR (4.19), PI (68.51%), MAR (37.45%) and PS (0.77) revealed excellent water quality, whereas Na% (66.46%) revealed doubtful water quality while KR (2.00) revealed unsuitable water quality. Using Piper and Stiff diagrams, hydrochemical facies defined from groundwater in the area includes; Na+K – Cl facies; Na+K - Mg – Cl facies; and Na+K - Ca – Cl facies. Gibb’s diagrams revealed that the dominant control on the hydrochemical facies and overall groundwater quality in the area has been attributed to precipitation and chemical weathering of subsurface rocks. Various ionic ratios including Mg/Ca (0.642), HCO3ˉ/Cl (0.040), (Na+K)/Cl (7.026) and Cation Exchange Values (-6.026) revealed low salt inland origin with respect to provenance. Pearson correlation matrices showed both positive and negative inter-relationships between the physico-chemical and heavy metals in groundwater within the study area. This study has proven the effective use of water quality index as a tool for defining the overall quality of water in Otuoke and its environs, along with hotspots that needs immediate attention. The results could also serve as a decision making tool that will aid in establishment of treatment facilities to improve the quality of water in the study area.

Consistent access to potable water remains a major challenge among communities in rural areas of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM). This is due to the high frequency of water supply infrastructure breakdown due to obsolete infrastructure and inadequate involvement and participation of rural communities in paying for water and maintenance which affect sustainability of water supply system in VDM. This study assesses current state of water supply, challenges and effectiveness of measures in place in order to propose intervention to improve rural water supply system in VDM. The study followed a mixed method research design, which include both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was analysed using thematic content analysis and chi-square test. The study established that water is inconsistently supplied in VDM. As about 53.5% of the respondents received water once per week which necessitate intervention to improve the situation. All the respondents from the four local municipalities of Vhembe District were not satisfied with the quantity of water received and distance travelled to collect water. The study recommend intervention strategy which included that local management structure to be established and terms of reference agreed with communities including more water supply sources options to be added

Potable water
Opis:
The public health protection in any part of the world depends largely on adequate supply of pure and safe drinking water. The increasing human population has posed a great problem in this endeavour. The presence of harmful toxic inorganic and organic chemicals as well as detection of pathogens including the coliform group in concentration greater than the permissible limits has led to public health hazards. The aim of this work is to compare the water quality in certain thickly populated districts of West Bengal India to assess the current scenario of potable water sources. The physical, biochemical and bacteriological parameters are tested in water samples collected from different open water bodies and domestic sources in different districts of West Bengal and the data are compared. The sources of this pollutants in the water are also ascertained and suitable remedial measures are suggested in those areas where the WHO permissible limits exceeded for human consumption and uses. For the bacteriological analyses the presence/absence of coliforms are carried out to authenticate the contamination of harmful pathogenic strains which indicated the sewage contamination of the drinking water and is not safe for human health. This study also reflected the fact that mostly the overcrowded congested districts are more prone to polluted water where suitable purification systems are inadequate. Moreover open water bodies are mostly polluted due to anthropogenic effects where disposal of human wastes as well as domestic wastes are dumped. The presence of highly pathogenic strains including V. cholerae, Salmonella sp. have been detected in open water body sources such as ponds in different areas tested in this study. The presence of pathogenic strains and alterations of both physical and chemical parameters of potable water is a serious problem and remedial measures for establishment of suitable purification system is of utmost need in the well-being of the people residing in those areas. This study will throw some light on the present situation of the water quality on a comparative basis in certain districts of West Bengal including the highly congested Kolkata district so that improvement of safe and pure water supply can be made following WHO guidelines in areas where water pollution are recorded.

This paper discussed the experimental performance of a solar still with cylindrical hollow fins that were integrated to a black painted stainless-steel basin. The cover of the solar still was made of transparent polythene film, while the frame was made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Mild steel cylindrical hollow pipes of 0.035 m diameter were used as fins in the solar still. The performance of this solar still (PSSCHF) was compared with the performance of a conventional solar still (PSS1) which was made of similar fabrication materials, but without using fins in its basin. Each solar still basin contained water with the depth of 1 cm that was collected from a pond located at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus. Both PSSCHF and PSS1 solar stills were exposed to similar climatic conditions within the same locality at USM during the experiments. The purpose of using the fins in the basin of PSSCHF was to absorb more heat from solar irradiance. The PSSCHF attained a maximum productivity of 4.49 l/m2•d, whereas the PSS1 obtained a maximum water production of 3.97 l/m2•d. The quality of fresh water produced from the solar stills met the World Health Organization potable water standards.

Opis:
The effect of filter media on groundwater quality changes was studied for 6 months. The test system was continuously supplied with groundwater from well, at a constant speed from top to bottom and filter deposits were open to provide contact with air. Filter beds during the study period were not washed. The subject of the study were three beds (Z1, Z2 and Z3) with different filter materials: Z1, Z3 were filled only with an alkaline material, which provided to reduction the corrosivity of water, Z2 – outside alkalising materials also included sand, thus increasing removal efficiency of iron and phosphate ions. Analysis of water physico-chemical parameters include pH, temperature, total alkalinity, intensity of colour, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and the content of: iron, iron (II) and (III), aggressive carbon dioxide, inorganic nitrogen forms (Ninorg), ie NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, phosphate and total organic carbon. Bacteriological analysis of water samples was based on the total number of psychrophilic bacteria, having an optimum temperature for growth about 22ºC, and mesophilic (37ºC). All analyses were made in accordance with current standards. Groundwater was characterized by high volatility of most of the analyzed indicators of water quality. Due to the low flow velocity of water through the filtration beds and presence of dissolved oxygen in water, there was conditions for microbial growth in the deposits. There were a growth conditions for biofilm development on the surface of filter media. Excess filter media was periodically flushed out by flowing water regardless of the type of material which is contacted with water. Confirmation of the biofilm development on the surface of mineral grains was also indirectly by the increase in the number of bacteria in the filtrate, compared to the number of bacteria in the groundwater. Biological activity of the bacteria on the deposits surface was confirmed by changes in concentration of inorganic forms of nitrogen. All three beds have provided a reduction in inorganic nitrogen, which was assimilated by the microorganisms. Microorganisms on the surface of deposits reduced ammonia nitrogen in the filtrates by nitrification process. In addition, NH4+ particles may be adsorbed on the surface of particulate matter present in the water and retained in the bed. During this research there were no significant differences depending on the type of deposit, in efficiency of removal of inorganic nitrogen.

Opis:
In this research, adsorption followed by filtration was used for removing heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Cr) from the polluted water. Three types of soils (silty, sandy and clay) and three types of marble powder (pure, impure, marble-granite mix) were used as an adsorbent. The soil and marble samples were collected from different regions of Oman. The maximum adsorption obtained was 96.01% for Zn using pure marble powder and the minimum adsorption obtained was 6.70% for Mn using impure marble powder. Through different soils, the maximum adsorption of 88.61% was achieved for Zn using clay and the lowest one is for Cr 16.51% using silty soil. The results suggest that among the marble powders, the pure ones show the maximum (96.01% for Zn) and marble-granite show the minimum (Mn 6.70%) adsorption performance. Among the adsorbents, Zn is the best adsorbate (96.01%) while the worst among the group is Mn, which merely adsorbed 6.70% with the selected adsorbents.

Opis:
The objective of the article is to present the issue stemming from improper management of resources, which – in the case of water – makes a real threat and poses a challenge to the state’s operations. The article focuses on the issues related to the volume and quality of water resources in our country, as well as their safety. Through the desk research, the article attempts to verify the hypothesis that the state of Polish water resources does not guarantee water safety. The assessment made for this purpose, although it is quality based and, necessarily, fragmentary in nature, refers to reliable and accurate empirical data. The analysis used selected pronouncements on audit results by NIK, as well as available materials and reports on public statistics, also developed by other public institutions and independent think tanks. At the same time, it is Vital to emphasise that the article touches upon the issue of water resources safety from a different perspective than the one adopted in another article previously published in “Kontrola Państwowa” (Water Safety of Poland. Effective Management of Resources, edition 1/2020), which dealt with similar issues. Therefore this article can be treated as a supplement to, or an elaboration on, the previous considerations.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of two incline solar water desalination (ISWD) systems. One design uses spray jets for spraying water onto the absorber plate, while the other uses a longitudinal slot for getting the inlet water on the absorber plate. The first ever ISWD system constructed and tested by Aybar et al (2005) used the longitudinal slot with a maximum daily production of 2.995 kg/m2 day. The Aybar et al design produced 3.4 kg/m2-day while the new design produced 6.41 kg/m2-day for wick on absorber plate system day during the hottest months in Famagusta (July-August 2010). Also tested was the influence of porous media (wire mesh), wick on the absorber plate. The effect of number of spray jets used in the system on the daily productivity and efficiency of the systems were also investigated.

In Jordan, the unprecedented proliferation of building projects is anticipated to increase the potable water demand in the construction manufacturing. In the present work, secondary treated wastewater (STW) and potable water (PW) were used in the production of concrete mixes, which were subjected to testing after 3 to 28 days of curing to determine how the, mechanical properties of concrete was affected by the addition of secondary treated wastewater in various proportions (25-100%). Results indicated that the use of 25% and 75% of secondary treated wastewater in concrete production increased the compressive strength to 39 MPa after 28 days of curing. A more noticeable increment was recorded in tensile strength, which was double that achieved with the standard design. Overall, the compressive strength increased by 21.95% when secondary treated wastewater was used, while the expenditure related to water usage was halved. Furthermore, there was consistency between the results obtained from scaling up to actual ready-mix concrete production and the results of the empirical work.

The recycling of water treatment residues (WTR) inside drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) to be a good option for reusing this type of waste, as well as for reducing the costs with its disposal off and with the acquisition of treatment chemicals. Therefore, a WTR was reused for auxiliary of the coagulation-flocculation processes for reducing the use of aluminium sulfate (coagulant) in a DWTP. Three series of experiments have been conducted involving three water samples with different turbidity and colour, different WTR samples with different total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations and different aluminium sulfate concentrations. The results showed that WTR can efficiently be used for the removal of turbidity between 21 NTU and 218 NTU and colour between 194 HU and 1509 HU for TSS concentration between 1635 mg/dm3 and 5420 mg/dm3, with better results in the range between 1635 mg/dm3 and 2678 mg/dm3. For higher TSS concentrations, the removal of both parameters decrease because there are excess of organics released to water, which demands the use of more coagulant.

Opis:
Aluminium is one of the environmental factors that may have an impact on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Some epidemiological studies show a relationship between the concentration of aluminium in drinking water and the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. The article presents and discusses the results of research on the effect of the type and dose of non-prehydrolyzed aluminium coagulants on the concentration of residual aluminium in water intended for human consumption. Aluminium sulphate (VI) and sodium aluminate were tested as coagulants. Analysis of the obtained test results showed that lower concentrations of residual aluminium were found after coagulation with aluminium sulphate (VI), which is hydrolyzed acidally, lowering the pH of the water in the range of 7.47 to 7.12 providing good conditions for the formation of Al(OH)3. A less useful coagulant due to the concentration of residual aluminium was sodium aluminate, which undergoes basic hydrolysis creating conditions for the transition of Al(OH)3 into soluble Al(OH).
