Opis:
Introduction. The birth of a sick child, as well as the infant’s subsequent hospitalization in an neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), is undoubtedly stressful for the parents of the infant. Most studies conducted in groups of parents of such children focus on the assessment of the negative changes in their functioning due to such stress. The authors were interested in positive changes in the psychological functioning of parents that may occur after traumatic experiences. These changes are referred to as post-traumatic growth (PTG). Objective. The aim of this study was to examine whether parents experience post-traumatic growth and to determine the predictors of PTG in fathers and mothers, depending on the coping strategy adopted. Materials and method. The study involved 82 parents, whose children were previously hospitalized in neonatal intensive care unit. The methods used included the following standardized psychological tests: the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, and the COPE Inventory. Socio-demographic and medical data were also collected. Results. Analysis of the data proved that the illness and hospitalization of a child are significantly associated with the occurrence of post-traumatic growth in parents. PTG in mothers is higher than in fathers. Predictors of PTG in fathers include the use of strategies aimed at seeking emotional support and positive reinterpretation and growth, while in the group of mothers, seeking emotional support, religious coping and planning were the coping strategies used. Conclusions. Research on post-traumatic growth should be expanded. Knowledge of the predictors of positive growth in a difficult situation can contribute to the widespread implementation of primary and secondary prevention of post-traumatic stress symptoms as well as increase positive changes in individuals who have experienced traumatic events.

Opis:
Objectives The purpose of the research is to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies for stress in the relation between resiliency and post-traumatic growth in a group of paramedics. Material and Methods Data of 80 paramedics who have experienced traumatic event at their worksites was analyzed. The age range of the participants was 21–67 years old (mean: 35.47, standard deviation: 10.21). The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Assessment Resiliency Scale and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies for Stress – Mini-Cope were used in the study. Results Venting of negative emotions and denial appeared as suppressors in analyzing the relation, while planning plays mediating role between resiliency and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions In the process of post-traumatic growth, both avoidance and problem-focused strategies are important. Moreover, controlling such strategies as Venting and Denial may result in a high level of posttraumatic growth in the study group. The data supports that resiliency may have direct or indirect impact on post-traumatic changes. The results allow to understand the mechanisms of resiliency better, that relationship with post-traumatic growth is ambiguous.

Opis:
Narrative identity allows various experiences to be integrated and incorporated into the concept of the self. Recent studies indicate that being aware of developing the story about the self that brings cohesion and meaning may be adaptive. This paper presents preliminary findings across three studies (two quantitative methods and one mixed) aimed at exploring the phenomenon of awareness of narrative identity in terms of its relations to other aspects of narrative identity and meaning-making (meaning in life, self-esteem, and post-traumatic growth). The total number of participants in all studies was 840 (N1 = 254, N2 = 424, N3 = 162). The results indicate that stronger awareness of narrative identity is related to higher self-narrative inclination and reflexivity and may be adaptive in terms of meaning-making and coping with traumatic events. People who were more aware of a narrative identity produced more elaborated and coherent self-narratives about an important past relationship. Additionally, they had a stronger tendency to integrate these past experiences with a sense of self-identity. Surprisingly, awareness of narrative identity was not related to self-esteem. These findings are discussed in terms of narrative identity literature. Moreover, possible directions for further studies to expand our understanding of awareness of narrative identity are proposed.

Opis:
Background: The purpose of the research is to investigate the role of personal (spirituality) and social (social support in the workplace) resources in both negative (post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD symptoms) and positive (post-traumatic growth) effects of experienced trauma in a group of emergency service workers. Materials and Methods: Data of 116 workers representing emergency service (37.1% firefighters, 37.1%, police officers and 25.8% medical rescue workers) who have experienced traumatic events in their worksite were analyzed. The range of age of the participants was 21-57 years (M = 35.27; SD = 8.13). Polish versions of the Impact of Events Scale - Revised and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory were used to assess the negative and positive effects of experienced events. Spirituality was assessed by self-report questionnaire and social support in the workplace scale was measured by the scale What support you can count on. Results: The results revealed that support from supervisors reduces the severity of PTSD symptoms, and spirituality and support from co-workers promote the growth after trauma. Conclusions: Personal resources in the form of spirituality, compared with the social resources, play more important role in gaining benefits from trauma than in protecting against the harmful effects of the experienced traumatic event. Wstęp: Celem podjętych badań było ustalenie roli zasobów osobistych (duchowość) i społecznych (wsparcie społeczne w pracy) w pojawianiu się negatywnych (objawy zespołu stresu pourazowego, post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD) i pozytywnych (potraumatyczny wzrost) skutków doświadczeń traumatycznych w grupie pracowników służb ratowniczych. Materiał i metody: Analizie poddano wyniki badań 116 pracowników reprezentujących służby ratownicze, tj. strażaków (37,1%), policjantów (37,1%) i ratowników medycznych (25,8%), którzy doświadczyli zdarzenia traumatycznego w związku z wykonywaną pracą. Wiek badanych wynosił 21-57 lat (M = 35,27; SD = 8,13). Do oceny skutków doświadczanych zdarzeń wykorzystano polskie wersje Impact of Events Scale-R oraz Post-traumatic Growth Inventory. Duchowość oceniano za pomocą Kwestionariusza Samoopisu, przeznaczonego do pomiaru duchowości, a wsparcie społeczne w pracy mierzono skalą „Na jakie wsparcie możesz liczyć". Opis:
Purpose: Multiple cellular functions are stimulated by a Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I). The biological activity of IGF-I is modulated by IGFbinding proteins (IGF-BPs) and at the same time, the availability of IGF-BPs may be regulated by the proteolytic activity of some metalloproteinases (MMPs). The aim of the present study was to compare the amounts of IGF-I and IGF-BPs in relation to the activity of MMP-9 in serum and knee synovial fluid from patients with Lyme arthritis (LA) and post-traumatic damage (PTD). Material and methods: Serum and synovial fluids were taken from knee joints of patients with PTD and LA. ELISA (for IGF-I assay), polyacrylamine gel electrophoresis following Western immuneblotting (for IGF-I and IGF-BPs expression), and zymography (for metalloproteinases detection), were used. Results: The concentration of IGF-I in serum and synovial fluid from LA patients were significantly lowered in comparison to PTD patients. Interesting, the synovial fluid /serum ratio of IGF-I concentrations was also lower in LA patients. Low expression IGF-BP3 and high activity of MMP-9 were detected in the LA synovial fluid. Conclusions: The high proteolytic activity of MMP- 9 results in a cleavage of both IGF-I and IGF-BP3 causing a decrease in content of these substances in LA synovial fluid. In addition, the reduction in IGF and IGF-BP amounts may affect the repair processes in joint tissues of LA patients. The low concentration of IGF-I and IGF-BP3 slows down the repair processes in the joint tissues of LA patients.
