Summary: The article is based on the study of informal features of celebrating the former national holiday, the Republic Day (of the SFRY), in post-socialist Slovenia: Yugonostalgic parties, concerts, political graffiti and street art, songs, various public events, news in the media and internet events (holiday greetings, Facebook groups, blogs, virtual Yugoslavias etc.). In the research I applied a combination of the usual cultural-studies methods (urban ethnography, sociology of time and critical visual semiology), which deals with these phenomena from the point of its production (top-down) and from the point of its reception (bottom-up). These celebrations are, on the one hand, increasingly commodified (in the sense of pop-resistance, painless provocation, pure entertainment or profitable market niche), while on the other hand, they present a critique, challenge, opposition and symbolic alternative to contemporary Slovenian dominant ideological currents and politics (ethno-nationalism and neo-liberalism).

Opis:
This paper builds on the work of Słomczyn´ski and Janicka (2005) and examines changes in the social structure in Poland, and the role of social classes on public opinion formation. The main hypothesis is that the divide between winners and losers crystallizes over time, as the social distance that separates these categories solidifies, and their reaction to economic and political transformation becomes increasingly divergent. Using data from the Polish panel survey POLPAN, conducted in 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003, we find that the main changes in the class structure in Poland occurred between 1988 and 1993. Following 1993, the patterns of the post-communist social structure start to settle, becoming, by 2003, typical of a capitalist society. Results further show substantial and significant differences between the privileged and the disadvantaged in evaluation of socialism, as well as in their subjective assessment of changes in life, and active and passive support for the institution of elections.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the dependence path and the number of factors which influenced its shape in the process of achieving transitional justice on the post-Soviet area. In comparative studies carried out in Estonia, Georgia and Poland, it has been demonstrated that there were a number of factors that diversified the process of transformation from the authoritarian to democratic system. The need to settle accounts with the Soviet authoritarian regime was diverse and depended on historical and geopolitical conditions, as well as on the political system which was adopted by individual states after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It has been observed that in Georgia the process of achieving transitional justice was not initiated but replaced, after consolidating the democratic system, by the process of achieving historical justice; however, in Estonia and in Poland, the problem of settling accounts with the outgoing authoritarian regime constituted one of the key issues of the transformation.

Two series of reactive polymer blends based on post-consumer glycol-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETG) and poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) were prepared in order to investigate the possibility of utilization of waste PETG foils from the packaging industry. The resulting copolymer consisted of hard segments based on PETG and soft segments of PTMO, the latter accounted for 25, 35 or 50 percent of the total mass. The effects of the content and length of the soft segments derived from poly(oxybutylene) glycol, with molecular weights of 1000 or 2000, on the structure and thermal properties of the resulting materials were investigated.

During the last two decades, discourses over the transition process shifted toward a theoretical diversity and a deeper understanding of ‘how modernity was reworked in postsocialist context’. It was widely argued that changing social relations were shaped not only by norms and institutions of Neoliberal capitalism, but also by established networks, institutional and regulatory structures and actors that/who gave diverse responses to the profound and thorough transformation of the society. This paper aims at understanding how geopolitical discourses over the Balkan and its place in the ‘new Europe’ shaped social relations and produced daily practices nested into those webs, through the perception and interpretations of post-socialist transformation by Hungarian migrants who left the war-hit Yugoslavia.

State-owned enterprises still play an important role in many countries around the world. The aim of this research is to indicate which factors had a significant impact on the scale of state ownership in enterprises in the group of twenty eight post-socialist countries. The large scale privatisation indicator from the EBRD and the novel microlevel-based SOE measure were regressed on sets of cultural, political, economic and control variables. The results show that cultural factors-represented by the dominant religion-had a substantial impact on the scale of state ownership in enterprises while the role of political and economic factors was less pronounced. These results emphasise the importance of cultural factors in shaping the scale of state ownership in enterprises. This study contributes to the literature by analysing factors inuflencing the scale of state ownership in enterprises in contemporary economic conditions which has been missing until now. A discussion on the role of the state as an owner of enterprises has been an important part of contemporary economic literature. The importance of this topic is driven by the fact that the scale of state ownership in enterprises is substantial in many countries around the world. Christiansen and Kim (2014) showed that 282 out of the 2,000 largest publicly listed companies worldwide were state-owned in 2012-2013. Szarzec, Dombi and Matuszak

The article is a review of papers, presentations, expert opinions concerning a just transition of post-mining areas in the light of technical, economic, ecological and social aspects, which were the subject-matter of the International Scientific-and-Technical Conference, organized by the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology in Gliwice, Poland and the IHP Hydraulics and Pneumatics Research Institute in Bucarest, Romania. The Conference participants concentrated their discussions both on the social effects of transition, on the economic aspects of activities concerning a collaboration of circummining companies as well as on technical and technological challenges in the mines already closed down or in those which are currently subject to the closing-down processes. Some possibilities of a reorientation of the mining plants towards generating and storage of green energy were presented. It should be borne in mind that a transition of the European Economy in the direction of more green and climate friendly is one of the most important objectives determined by the European Union. In particular, it is a big challenge for mining regions such as Silesia in Poland. The transition process includes a liquidation of underground workings and of the surface infrastructure and a series of indispensable activities oriented onto a restoration of the natural environment and a protection of mining plants areas against hazards which may occur after a termination of their operation. The article is ended with some information concerning a role research institutes in the just transition of post-mining areas and a new strategy of KOMAG as GREEN INSTITUTE.

Opis:
From the time of its introduction, the concept of ‘transition’ has effected a tectonic shift in our understanding of post-socialism. In the process which has taken place during the last couple of decades after the collapse of East European socialist regimes, it has become transformed from one of the signifiers of the political and social change which occurred into a cornerstone for thinking, analyzing and predicting the future of post-socialism. Furthermore, in this article it is posited that all the political and social processes occurring in the ex-socialist countries are defined in relation to transition as an all-encompassing form of post-socialist experience. Relying on the discursive theory of Ernesto Laclau, this article attempts to consider together the usually separated questions of epistemology and ontology, and to ask what is the connection between scientific origins of the concept of transition and its political legitimacy. We claim that transition is a “sutured“ structure composed of various social experiences and political strategies, which naturalizes and universalizes the contingent power struggles that are taking place and will take place in the future of post-socialist countries. Therefore, severing the existing bonds between transition and the actually existing post-socialism is a necessary precondition for creating a more complex and productive understanding of the societies of East and South East Europe.

Opis:
The text discusses the reasons of financial crisis of the last decade in the particular case of post-socialist countries. It analyses in particular the endogenous reasons of crisis in those countries, which contributed to particularly strong shock due to external factors, being the sudden deterioration of economic climate and the resulting stop of foreign financial flows. As endogenous cause, the impact of delayed and differentiated growth of welfare after transition to the market economy was indicated. Under consumerism and availability of credits this brought about rapid growth of debt of households. It made available rapid growth of consumption before the crisis, but led to its limitation and fluctuations in post-crisis period, when the debts had to be reimbursed and the foreign financial sources were much less available. It seems that the particular case of Poland was underpinned by lower propensity to borrow of the companies and, partly, of the households, and by the control by the financial supervisor. Those features which were present in spite of income differentiation of the population, were at the origin of lower dependence of inflow of foreign credits.

Opis:
Social capital is widely seen as an important factor behind economic development. It facilitates ties between businesses and reduces transaction costs. It also creates an innovation-friendly environment. But research reports also list some negative aspects of social capital, such as the creation of divisions within society and the uncontrolled emergence of various self-interest groups, and, in extreme cases, mafia-type organizations. Another problem is that the very concept of social capital has not been clearly defined in research reports, according to the author. Lissowska sets out to determine if post-socialist countries differ from other economies in the way they use social capital. She starts out by defining social capital as a partially altruistic approach of an individual toward other people. The study is based on data for 23 European countries collected during a European Social Survey in 2006. This body of data makes the author conclude that post-socialist countries have distinct features as far as social capital is concerned, such as a low level of social confidence and a tendency to maintain “close” rather than “remote” social ties. However, other countries such as Portugal, Cyprus and, less markedly, Spain, display similar features, Lissowska notes. These features may result from these countries’ totalitarian past when social ties were more difficult to establish and maintain than today. They also stem from historic cultural factors such as insufficiently developed civil-society traditions in some of these countries, poor quality of government and law enforcement, religious traditions and new social trends such as people’s drive to succeed economically.

At the same time this process was companied with the crisis philosophical thought, as with as the need for a deep reflection in this area. Transition is the moving integration of society from ideology to the reality culture (the values system) and the integration of three truths: philosophical, scientific and religious. And the most effective vehicle is the cultural intercommunication. In global era the integration is a cultural intercommunications and the philosophy itself is an essential cultural. The dialectic of transition and integration in global time. The cultural shock and the vulgar hedonism. Paradox between interest and principles. The paradox of modern Transitology is it between time and space, or, between past time and future time, has made that many today’s society to be gripped by a severe conflict between the two sides: the old and new; the political right and the political left. The moral paradox or the paradox of “two twin brothers”.

The poetical determinants of magical realism, although several elements had already been present in Croatian literature from at least the time of the generation of the „Borgesian“ writers, and also earlier, have not been the subject of more in-depth research until recently. And yet, novelistic prose in Croatia, under the influence of similar movements in the World-literature scene, is still a witness to its appearance. In our investigation we will research the elements of magical realism in relation to the concepts and constructs of the Other and the Different in the corpus of these recent Croatian novels: Baba Jaga je snijela jaje (Baba Jaga Laid an Egg) (2008) by Dubravke Ugrešić, Črna mati zemla (Black Mother the Earth) (2013) and Ciganin ali najlijepši (Gypsy but the Most Beautiful) (2016) by Kristijan Novak as well as Prevaranti: Iskupljenje (The Cheaters: Redemption) (2016) by Dorotea Vučić. Literary-theoretical approaches have linked magical realism (since its beginnings in Latin American Literatures) with statements on the Other and the Different (Postcolonial approaches), and in this research we will present how elements of the same function within the context of the 21st century Croatian novel. In her novel, D. Ugrešić uses the theme of aging in the post-transitional nations of Eastern Europe to present the context of the construction of the Other and the Different, realised with the aid of magical-realist elements and characteristics. K. Novak presents a psychosocially traumatised child in his novel Črna mati zemla as well as the Romani community in Ciganin, ali najljepši. D. Vučić also uses this same ethnic group as her theme in her novel, which among all these cited novels is closest to the genre of magical realism, yet her Other is the former collective state of South Slavs, which is literarily constructed as a magical space titled Tromeđe (Tripoint), with emphasis on historical precedents allowing its recognition. After the topic of magical realism is 57 discussed, through a reading of the most important theoretical texts, as a mode and genre as well as its relationship to realism and the fantastic, the presence of these elements in the aforementioned texts will be placed under scrutiny, so that after this, with the aforementioned poetological framework, the concepts and constructs of the Other and the Different will be investigated. Magical realism is recognised as a mode which deconstructs dominant metanarratives (familial, social, political, founded in tradition or actual, universal and local). Its incorporation into the mimetic narrative of novelistic prose texts informs the entirely actual social engagement of these authors, emphasised, in fact by these aforementioned concepts. The deconstruction of dominant metanarratives and the focus of the differences in human experience and the concept of reality, as well as the approaches of the magical realistic mode, are considered here in the poetics of the 21st Croatian novel.

Massive student protests in South Africa in the past few years, largest since the times of the anti-apartheid struggles, raised several questions for political scientists. Are we witnessing a generational change? Or are they a sign of a broader global shift towards “assertive citizenship” present in advanced democracies and democratizing countries? To answer these questions, this paper examines the levels of political support and nature of political participation among the young generation. The paper also points out that generational change is not immediately visible in public opinion polls but is a process of a gradual narrative construction. Protests brought with them a challenge to the founding narrative of a united Rainbow Nation and reconciliation with the past, leading to a fracture in democratic stability. For the democratic project to succeed, it is essential that the national project in South Africa does not fall apart.
