Opis:
The quantitative and qualitative analysis of mycorrhizae was done for Scots pine in plantation established on post−agricultural land. The state of mycorrhizae depended on the applied method of soil preparation (full deep ploughing, full ploughing with subsoiling, full shallow ploughing and ridge formation) as well as the presence and density of introduced land improving species (5, 3, 1.5 thousand/ha).

Opis:
In Poland, afforestation is usually carried out on the weakest soils, excluded from agricultural use and wasteland, i.e. post-agricultural land. A characteristic feature of such habitat is poor-quality soil, relatively high content of nutrients for trees, particularly nitrogen, as well as a low level of humus. This is important for the quality of microbiological processes occurring in post-agricultural soils. Restitution of the forest in such a habitat requires the use of various revitalisation treatments for improving soil quality and increasing biological activity and soil fertility. This article presents the results of a long-term experiment on the effectiveness of various revitalisation treatments (zoo- and phytomelioration) on afforested post-agricultural lands after more than 30 years from their application in pine forests in north-western Poland. These treatments consisted of introducing additional organic matter into the soil in the form of bark and sawdust, sowing lupine and introducing soil fauna. The comparative area for afforestation on post-agricultural soils in the presented experiment was the area of forest soils, located in the same habitat, in a pine stand, at the same time. Biological activity of soil was measured with the activity of soil enzymes dehydrogenases and acid phosphatase, the biomass of microorganisms was measured and the content of total dissolved carbon and nitrogen was also determined.
Aktywność biologiczną gleby mierzono aktywnością Enzymów glebowych dehydrogenaz i kwaśnej fosfatazy, mierzono biomasę mikroorganizmów, a także określono zawartość całkowitego rozpuszczonego węgla i azotu.

Research on the effect of birch regeneration on changes occurring in the environment on former farmlands included a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the biomass growing on the research plots. Five experimental plots were selected in the Mazovia region: two in Dobieszyn and the Kampinos National Park and one in Kozienice. The analysis performed on each plot was concerned with the amount and chemical composition of biomass in four patches of vegetation, characterised by the different ages of the birch trees growing there. The vegetation patches were classified according to age group, i.e. I: 1–4 years old, II: 5–8 years old, III: 9–12 years old and IV: over 12 years old. Biomass samples were collected in the field and determined in kg DM/ha using the following components: roots, stem, bark, branches, assimilation apparatus, litterfall and the total biomass of the other (except birch) plants. For all the above-mentioned groups, the content of the elements N, C, S, Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd was determined. This allowed us to obtain both the values of the concentrations of particular substancesand their allocation in both the organic matter and litterfall. The aim of theresearch was to discover whether the allocation of elements changes with the age of birch growing on former farmland.

The changes of N, P, K, Ca and Mg content in Scots pine needles over 4 years of the experiment were estimated in 2 treatments – inoculated in laboratory with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Thelephora terrestris and non inoculated (control). The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for one season and then planted out into post−agricultural soil. Statistically significant differences were found only for Mg concentration in needles of two−year−old initially inoculated seedlings. For both treatments N and K concentration differed between all analysed years of growth. In the case of P and Ca concentration differences were found neither for treatments, nor for years. Four−year−old inoculated seedlings had lower concentration of all investigated nutrients with the exception of Ca. In both treatments the concentration of nutrients was at optimal level for four−year−old seedlings’ growth. Obtained results suggest that environmental conditions as well as plant metabolism may influence the nutrient concentration in the needles more strongly than their uptake by ectomycorrhizal symbionts on the roots.

Opis:
Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and their symbiotic associations with forest trees are among major drivers of key ecosystem functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant nutrient and water uptake from soil, plant-plant facilitation/competition and diversity regulation via common mycorrhizal networks. Through their functional traits and interactions with both abiotic and biotic environment, they also significantly affect the process of open land colonization by trees as well as vegetation succession coupled with soil and ecosystem development. Here we review the role of ECM fungi in the early primary and secondary succession following major anthropogenic disturbances. Based on the examples of mine spoils and post-agricultural lands, we demonstrate key ecosystem services provided by ECM fungi in the processes of forest restoration. We point out ecological mechanisms and adaptations which underpin ECM fungal community successional interactions, particularly life histories, dispersal, spatial structure, host preferences, and sensitivity to environmental filters. We emphasize the need of better understanding the role of ECM fungi in the forest restoration practice as it seems crucial for afforestation success and biodiversity rehabilitation. Thus, ectomycorrhizal traits should be a prime consideration in afforestation and carbon sequestration polices, sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation practices.

Opis:
An attempt was made in this investigation to determine the impact of the following four systems of soil agricultural use: not subjected to any reclamation treatment, fodder-cereal reclamation treatment, rape-cereal reclamation treatment and the so-called “conservation” treatment (permanent lucerne) on the properties of soils developing from post-mining grounds. A particular attention was paid to the properties of the humus layer of the developing soils, among them, their texture which belongs to the most important soil diagnostic features. Experiments were carried out in 2010 on the experimental field of the Department of Soil Science and Reclamation of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. A combination without mineral fertilisation (0NPK) was established on each of the analysed use systems. In the case of the fodder-cereal and rape-cereal systems, additionally, two levels of mineral fertilisation: 1NPK – in rape-cereal system (rape: 200 kg N, 70 kg PO5, 90 kg K2O; wheat: 160 kg N, 40 kg P2O5, 80 kg K2O) and in fodder- cereal (lucerne: 170 kg N, 60 kg P2O5, 150 kg K2O; wheat: 160 kg N, 40 kg P2O5, 80 kg K2O) and 2NPK were applied. The control was post-mining ground which was not subjected to any reclamation treatment. The evaluation of changes in the selected, most important soil structure parameters was based on the original methodological solution elaborated at the Department of Soil Science and Reclamation of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań in which the basic element is a regular soil aggregate of 1 cm3 volume. The following parameters were determined for such aggregates cut out from two depths of the humus layer (7 and 15 cm): dynamic water resistance (SW), static water resistance (SW), secondary aggregation after dynamic and static water action, time of capillary rise (TKMIN), capillary minimal (VKMIN) and maximal (VKMAX) water capacity and compression strength (Rc). The above-mentioned properties were determined in 5 replications. Using methods commonly employed in soil science, the following parameters were determined: texture composition, solid phase density, bulk density and porosity, hygroscopic capacity and maximal hygroscopic capacity as well as soil reaction and carbonate, carbon and nitrogen contents. Reclamation treatments applied in the course of the past 32 years and soil-forming processes taking place under their influence led to distinct changes in the morphological structure of the examined profiles, primarily, in their surface layer. The smallest morphological changes were observed in the profile sampled from the plot with long-term lucerne cultivation (so-called “conservation”). The profiles representing the fodder-cereal use system exhibited a more advanced stadium of soil-forming processes. Their humus layer was more distinctive, with dark colour, its thickness ranged from 20 to 28 cm corresponding to the depth of the performed ploughing. Identical features and better homogeneity were observed in the case of the humus horizon developed in the rape-cereal system of agricultural use, although certain differences were recorded in profile morphology depending on the level of the applied mineral fertilisation (1NPK and 2NPK). Post-mining ground which was not subjected to any reclamation treatment was found to contain the smallest quantities of organic material – carbon and nitrogen (2.65-2.84 g kg-1). The amount of oxidisable carbon in the fodder-cereal system of agricultural use was 2.5 to 3 times higher (6.45-8.82 g kg -1) than in the untreated post-mining ground irrespective of the level of mineral fertilisation. On the other hand, the amount of carbon was more varied in the rape-cereal system of use. In the case of absence of fertilisation (0NPK), this quantity was by about 50% higher in comparison with the post-mining ground and amounted to 3.1 g.kg-1. Elevated fertilisation with 1NPK and 2NPK doses increased levels of carbon to values similar as in the fodder-cereal system. The highest quantity of carbon of about 12 g.kg-1 was recorded in the humus horizon developed on the surface representing permanent lucerne (so-called “conservation”). A distinct variability was also observed in the physical properties of soils from the examined systems of agricultural use. Untreated post-mining grounds were characterised by high bulk density (1.97–2.02 Mg m-3) and, consequently, by low general porosity (23.6 to 25.3%). In the fodder-cereal use system, soil density was found to be by about 0.30 Mg m-3 lower and porosity – by about 10% higher. In the case of the rape-cereal system of agricultural use, soil density was only by about 0.1 Mg m-3 higher and general porosity – by about 5% lower in comparison with the fodder-cereal system. Bulk density and general porosity in the so-called “conservation” system of use amounted to 1.35–1.51 Mg m-3 and 42.8–48.9%, respectively, in other words, exhibited the most advantageous values of these features from the point of view of agricultural usage. Recapitulating, it should be emphasised that widely distinguished two soil-forming factors, namely: time and human activity begin to play a dominant role in the formation of soils, especially in areas which undergo large industrial geomechanical transformations mainly as a result of open-cast mining of different minerals.

It has been proposed that artificial gaps are to be established in young pine stands by cutting an appropriate number of trees around the centres of infection (1−3 dying trees) and introducing Phlebiopsis gigantea to stumps. The treatment limits or significantly reduces root rot effects in trees and the risk of dis− ease development that may follow. The initiation of the biocoenotic nature of changes in pine monocultures ensures stand conversion (reconstruction) supported with the processes of natural succession.

The focus of the research was on the effect of inoculation with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Thelephora terrestris on changes in mycorrhizal structure and growth parameters of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings. Before planting on post−agricultural land, the seedlings were grown under laboratory conditions for six months, at two different nitrogen fertilization rates [Hilszczańska, Sierota 2006a]. Mycorrhizae formed by T. terrestris dominated in the mycorrhizal structure during two growing seasons after planting irrespective of the growth variant applied. However, their higher percentage was detected in seedlings artificially inoculated with T. terrestris mycelium. The inoculation did not limit mycorrhiza formation by other mycorrhizal fungi. No significant differences in parameter values were found between inoculated and non−inoculated seedlings.

The dynamics of soil respiration activity was measured in four soil preparation and admixture variants with pine admixed with phytomelioration and biocoenotic species. In total, there were 16 different variants. The measurements were carried out in May/June 2005 using a CO2 concentration analyser AirTECH 2005−PA. Additionally, air and soil temperature were measured. The obtained results show that soil respiration activity depends on soil preparation method. The greatest soil carbon dioxide efflux was detected on the plots prepared by agricultural plough, while the lowest − on the plots prepared by BMS plough. The most intensive respiration activity of soils occurred on the plots with 7,000 pines admixed with 1,500 species of phytomelioration and biocoenotic plants. The lowest carbon dioxide efflux was detected on the plots with 7,000 pines admixed with 3,000 phytomelioration and biocoenotic species. Additionally, soil and air temperatures turned to have a significant impact on soil respiration activity.

The paper analyses the production and allocation of biomass in young, spontaneoussilver birch afforestation occurring on post-agricultural lands in the Mazowszeregion (central Poland). We investigated 114 sample plots of age varying from 1 to 19 years. During the first 15 years after their establishment on abandoned farmland, the naturally regenerated silver birch stands produced on average approximately 75 tons of dry biomass per hectare. The major (50–70%) part of this biomass was stored in the tree stems and this share increased with age. The fractions of biomass in the foliage and roots decreased over time, while the share of biomass in the branches remained rather constant. The significant age-dependency of the allometric relationships suggested the need to use age-sensitive biomass expansion factors to estimate the biomass from the stem volume.
