The possibility to use 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-[-4–2-(3-pentadecylphenoxy)-ethoxy]phenylporphyrin as a chemosensor for the detection of electron acceptors: HCl, TFA and BF3 in solid-phase in the form of thin film on glass carrier plate and in liquid phase in benzene. When chemosensor is under the influence of acceptor, the characteristic changes occur in the position of bands in its UV-VIS spectrum accompanied by the change of system colour. This indicates high sensitivity of porphyrin to action of studied acceptor systems.

The temperature dependent Mössbauer spectroscopy and EXAFS analysis of the dynamical properties of selected iron-porphyrin derivatives: FeTPPCl and FePPIXCl has been presented. It has been shown that these iron-porphyrin properties may be modified by the outer ligands, but they are also strongly influenced by the intermolecular interactions, which are reduced in frozen solutions of the studied complexes.

The powder samples of meso-tetraphenyloporphyrin iron(III) chloride and ferriprotoporphyrin IX chloride and their frozen in solutions N,N-dimethylformamide were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The variation of the outer ligands of the porphyrin rings modifies their magnetic properties but the major influence on the magnetic relaxation process exerts the intermolecular magnetic interactions, which are eliminated in dilute solutions.

Opis:
Objectives: Octabromodiphenyl ether (OctaBDE) is a fl ame retardant which has been withdrawn from common use due to its negative effect on the environment. The literature data regarding its toxicity addresses its effect on liver function, the endocrine and reproductive systems, as well as its developmental toxicology aspects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeated administration of OctaBDE on heme biosynthesis in rats. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on female Wistar rats. OctaBDE was administered intragastrically at four different doses (2, 8, 40 or 200 mg/kg/day) for 7, 14, 21 or 28 days. The following measures of heme synthesis disturbance were used: urinary excretion of porphyrins, liver concentration of porphyrins, the activity of delta-aminolevulinate synthase (ALA-S) and delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) in the liver. Results: After 28 days of exposure, lower ALA-S and ALA-D activity was observed in the liver. Additionally, increased concentrations of high carboxylated porphyrins (octa- and heptacarboxyporphyrins) were found in the liver: from 2- to 10-fold after the 2 mg/kg/day doses and from 4- to 14-fold after the 8-200 mg/kg/day doses. The porphyrogenic effect of OctaBDE was also evidenced by augmented, dose-dependent and exposure time-dependent, concentrations of total porphyrins in urine (2-7.5-fold increase) and their urinary excretion (2-9-fold increase). Tetracarboxyporphyrins predominated in the urine; their concentrations increased 2.5-10 fold. Conclusions: The study revealed that repeated exposure to OctaBDE affects heme biosynthesis and the levels of porphyrins. The lowest effective level which induced changes in porphyrin concentration was 2 mg/kg/day.

Opis:
The need for new, chemically and physically stable luminescent materials operating with UV excitations has stimulated research on luminescence properties of doped sol–gel material. In this work, it has been presented a technology of production of silica gels doped with organic molecules, lanthanide compounds and organic/inorganic composites. Optical properties of these materials as functions of temperature, concentration and excitation wavelength are presented. Dynamics of excited states has been discussed based on the decay times and emission efficiencies data. Mechanisms of ligand-to-metal energy transfer as well as other processes affecting emission efficiency are considered. Silica sol–gels doped with di-aminoacid derivatives of porphyrins: PP(Ser)2(Arg)2, PP(Ala)2(Arg)2, PP(Met)2(Arg)2, where Met, Arg and Ser denote methionine, serine and arginine aminoacids, respectively, and H2TTMePP {tetrakis[4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]-21H,23H-porphine} have been obtained and spectroscopically studied. These materials can find applications as phosphors or sensors of UV irradiation.

Opis:
Temperature dependence of asymmetry as well as isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values of Mössbauer spectra of trivalent iron complexes coordinated to porphyrin ligands such as octaethylporphyrin, monoazaethioporphyrin, diazaoctaethylporphyrin and phthalacyanine is discussed in this paper. All the above mentioned complexes have the chloride axial ligand at the fifth coordination site. Different temperature changes of asymmetry and other parameters of Mössbauer spectra of these complexes can be correlated with a number of methine bridges CH substituted by nitrogen atoms in the porphyrin macrocycle. The form of this asymmetry is such that the higher-energy component of the doublet is more broadened than the lower-energy one, while the areas (intensities) under each of two components are the same. The most distinct asymmetry is observed at room temperature. When temperature is decreasing, the spectrum becomes successively more symmetrical and at liquid helium temperature linewidths of both components of the quadrupole splitting are very close one another. The Mössbauer spectrum of the FeCl-monoazaethioporphyrin complex exhibits reversed asymmetry at liquid helium temperature in comparison with the spectra of the remaining complexes i.e. the lower-energy component of the doublet is slightly more broadened than the higher-energy one. The spin-spin and spinlattice relaxation mechanisms in the context of quantum mechanically mixed spin states S = 5/2 + 3/2 of FeIII ions are considered as a source of the observed asymmetry.

Opis:
Electron configuration changes of Fe(III) ions in porphyrin complexes with chloride axial ligands caused by the successive nitrogen substitution of CH methine bridges at meso positions of the porphyrin ring is discussed on the basis of Mössbauer spectroscopy results. It was shown that increase of a number of nitrogen atoms at the meso positions changes the character of quantum-mechanically mixed spin state of Fe(III) ions (S = 5/2 + 3/2) by the increase of the intermediate-spin (S = 3/2) contribution. This feature is reflected in Mössbauer spectra by an increase of quadrupole splitting values and the decrease of the asymmetry of quadrupole doublets, when the number of nitrogen atoms at the meso positions increases. Isomer shifts remain practically unchanged. These peculiarities are discussed in the light of spin relaxation mechanisms and the occupancy of d orbitals in Fe(III) ions coordinated to the porphyrin ring and chloride ligand. It has been noticed that Mössbauer parameters correlate qualitatively with EPR data.

Simple methods for detection and isolation of protein-porphyrin complexes were elaborated in our laboratory. They are based on the separation of protein-porphyrin complexes in native polyacrylamide gel and measurement of their fluorescence, with the use of two detection systems: the commercially available Gel DocTM 2000 system, and a system specially designed for the purpose of these investigations, concerning protein-porphyrin interactions. The fluorescent complexes can be electro-transferred from the gel onto PVDF membrane, eluted and analyzed in order to identify the protein interacting with porphyrins.

Two water soluble porphyrins: meso-tetra-4-N-methylpyridyl-porphyrin iodide (P1) and 5,10-di-(4-acetamidophenyl)-15,20-di-(4-N-methylpyridyl) porphyrin (P2) were synthesised and evaluated in respect to their photochemical and photophysical properties as well as biological activity. Cytotoxic and phototoxic effects were evaluated in human malignant melanoma Me45 line using clonogenic assay, cytological study of micronuclei, apoptosis and necrosis frequency and inhibition of growth of megacolonies. Both porphyrins were characterised by high UV and low visible light absorptions. Dark toxicity measured on the basis of the clonogenic assay and inhibition of megacolony growth area indicated that P1 was non-toxic at concentrations up to 50 μg/ml (42.14 μM) and P2 at concentrations up to 20 μg/ml (16.86 μM). The photodynamic effect induced by red light above 630 nm indicated that both porphyrins were able to inhibit growth of melanoma megacolonies at non-toxic concentrations. Cytologic examination showed that the predominant mode of cell death was necrosis.

Results of Mössbauer and EPR studies of univalent-iron monoazaetioporphyrin complexes [Fe(I)(MAEP)] are presented in this paper. Fe(I)(MAEP) were generated using the chemical reduction method. Three forms of the univalent-iron monoazaetioporphyrin complexes were observed: (I) typical Fe(I)(MAEP), (II) with an additional electron on the porphyrin ligand [Fe(I)(MAEP•)]- and (III) the Fe(I)(MAEPh) phlorin structure. Electron configuration of Fe(I) ions in these complexes is (dxy)2(dxz ,dyz)4(dz 2)1. The [Fe(I)(MAEP•)]- structure is stable only in solution and it is transferred into Fe(I)(MAEP) in the solid state. Mössbauer parameters for all products of the reduction reaction are given.

We report the synthesis, photochemical and photophysical properties and preliminary studies on biological effect of a new tritolylporphyrin dimer (T-D). Absorption and emission properties of T-D suggest its possible use in photodynamic therapy. T-D is capable of singlet oxygen production with 0.8 quantum yield. It also has a high photostability. The photodynamic properties of the dimer were examined following the growth of SKMEL 188 (human melanoma) cells irradiated with red light (cut off <630 nm). The surviving fraction of the cells decreased about 3-fold (vs. non-irradiated cells) for an 81 J/cm2 dose. Our results suggest that tritolylporphyrine dimer T-D may be an interesting hydrophobic sensitizer for photodynamic therapy.
