Opis:
The present paper deals with a class of modified ratio estimators for estimation of population mean of the study variable when the population deciles of the auxiliary variable are known. The biases and the mean squared errors of the proposed estimators are derived and compared with that of existing modified ratio estimators for certain known populations. Further, we have also derived the conditions for which the proposed estimators perform better than the existing modified ratio estimators. From the numerical study it is also observed that the proposed modified ratio estimators perform better than the existing modified ratio estimators.

Opis:
Changes that occur on the local level can explain the processes on the population level and, at the same time, are the driving force of species adaptation. This manuscript reports data about genetic diversities of the fungus Schizophyllum commune on the level of a local population. Objects of the study were dicarious cultures of S. commune collected from 38 basidiocarps grown on the territory of Holosiivskyi National Nature Park, Lysa Hora Regional Landscape Park and Feofaniya forest parcel (Ukraine). Results showed similarity of genetic variability of S. commune in different local populations. The heterozygote deficiency of some loci that was discovered might have resulted from new forms of allozymes that have not become widespread or due to small population sizes. The degree of differentiation of genes between local studied populations was moderate due to the high flow of genes. The absence of spatial structuration of genotypes is established, and the Mantel test showed a lack of interconnection between the genetic component and the geographical coordinates of the samples. It has been suggested that wind direction and terrain are the factors that influence the genetic structure of local populations.

Opis:
It is acknowledged that ancestry may play a role in the likelihood of reporting motion sickness, based upon questionnaires in which symptoms are reported more frequently in individuals with Asian ancestry. This study compares motion sickness and related vertigo syndromes in Thai and Thai-Chinese populations. The Motion Sickness Questionnaire; Albany Panic and Phobia Questionnaire; Acrophobia Questionnaire; Body Symptoms Questionnaire and the Situational Characteristics Questionnaire were administered to 128 participants. Eighty-eight participants had a father, mother and all grandparents of Thai origin, while 44 participants had with at least one Chinese ancestor among parents or grandparents. All responses were similar between groups except regarding fear of heights, which is significantly higher in Thai participants without recent Chinese ancestors. Reported motion sickness sensitivity is similar between Thai and Chinese populations. The group differences for some fear of heights items may be linked to each group’ previous experience with heights. Results also suggest that although conquering a fear of heights might require specific visuo-vestibular adaptations, these adaptations alone may not be sufficient to lessen an individual’sfear of heights.

Opis:
Juniperus excelsa s. str. (Greek juniper) in Crimea is a relic species on the limits of its range, and represents the Mediterranean flora in the Sub-Mediterranean part of the peninsula. Its origin and history in this area remains unresolved. We aimed to analyze phylogeny and potential demographic expansion of the juniper in the Crimea as well as to study its morphological differentiation. We analyzed plant material from 59 trees inhabiting eight populations. Genetic variation assessments were based on the four non-coding chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) fragments and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5,8S-ITS2 (ITS). To examine the morphological differentiation, eight measured/counted traits of cones, seeds, and shoots were chosen and eight ratios were calculated. Morphological parameters were compared using ANOVA, Student’s t test, discrimination analysis and Kruskal-Wallis and U MannWhitney tests. Two cpDNA fragments were polymorphic and, in total, 10 cpDNA haplotypes were found. Haplotype diversity (Hd) ranged from 0.0 to 0.9. Based on both cpDNA and ITS sequences variation, phylogenetic analyses revealed a close relationship of the Crimean junipers to the individuals from other parts of the species range. In general, our molecular results confirmed the low level of genetic differentiation of J. excelsa individuals inhabiting different parts of the species range, likely resulting from a common ancestry. Only slight morphological differences were found between populations with different geographic location or habitat. The analyzes showed the distinctness of the populations from the southern part of the coast. Some unique morphological and molecular features of southern coastal populations imply that they are remnants of Late Pleistocene abundant forests. We suggest that the recent fragmentation of the Juniperus populations in the Crimean Peninsula could have arisen during the Atlantic period of the Holocene.

Opis:
Our research is centred on the stochastic structure of matched open populations, subjected to periodical reclassifications. These populations are divided into sub-populations. In our application we considered two populations of customers of a bank: with and without account manager. Two or more of such population are matched when there is a 1-1 correspondence between their sub-populations and the elements of one of them can go to another, if and only if the same occurs with elements from the corresponding sub-populations of the other. So we have inputs and outputs of elements in the population and along with several sub-populations in which the elements can be placed. It is thus natural to use Markov chains to model these populations.
Besides this study connected with Markov chains we show how to carry out Analysis of Variance - like analysis of entries and departures to and from de populations of customers. Our purpose is to study the flows in and out of customers in classes for the two populations and to make research on the influence of the factors year, class and region. We used the Likelihood ratio tests for the hypotheses formulated on the basis of these factors. In our work we verified that major hypotheses were all rejected. This raises the question of what are the effects and interactions truly relevant. Looking for an answer to this problem, we present the first partition to a change in the log Likelihood. This partition is very similar to the analysis of variance for the crossing of the factors that allowed us to use algebraic established results, see Fonseca et al. (2003, 2006), for models with balanced cross.

This text is a reflection on the perceptions of risk, social inequality, violence, and their impacts on societies in times of pandemic. Addressing the interrelationships between these concepts and the factors that weaken social relations is a problem that still lacks discussion. In discussing these concepts, the aim of the present text is to analyze, although briefly, some conceptual and epistemological proposals and implications of the thought of Ulrich Beck and Niklas Luhmann on reflexive modernization, global risk societies and social systems. In addition, the text examines the social psychologist Mary Jane Spink’s considerations on risk from the point of view of the production of meanings. The text also discusses the paradoxical relationship between autonomy and vulnerability in the human "thinking and acting" of the Paul Ricoeur. The scenario of deepening inequalities and violence among vulnerable groups in these times of pandemic, most evident due to the growth in homicide and unemployment rates, is also discussed in the last three years. These analyses help to understand the insecurity that the risk society faces on a daily basis, such as a pandemic, which can further weaken the basic living conditions of vulnerable populations while expanding inequalities and violence.

The medicinal usage of silverweed herb (Anserinae herba) is primarily related to the presence of phenolic compounds. Three populations of silverweed (Potentilla anserina L.) occurring at the edges of arable fields in Podlasie area (north-eastern Poland) were compared in respect of the content and composition of phenolics. Herb collected from the investigated populations differed in the content of determined compounds. The tannin content was very low (0.81-0.91%). The total flavonoid content ranged from 0.48 to 0.60%. Phenolic acid content was much higher (1.38-2.26%). Three flavan-3-ols: (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, and (-)-epigallocatechin, four flavonol glycosides: rutoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, and kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, as well as one phenolic acid (ellagic acid) were identified as a_result of HPLC analysis of methanolic extracts from the investigated raw materials. The most considerable differences between populations concerned the content of (+)-catechin (87.0-199.3 mg × 100 g-1), (-)-epigallocatechin (141.9-290.6 mg × 100 g-1), and rutoside (192.3-386.0 mg × 100 g-1) in herb...

“Kill the Indian in the Child.” On cultural genocide and transitional justice in Canada. Kate Korycki in an interview by Anna ZawadzkaThis is an interview with Kate Korycki on the reparations for the native population in Canada for what the Canadian government defined as “cultural genocide.” Kate Korycki was born in Warsaw and has lived in Toronto for 25 years. Until 2006 she worked for the Canadian Government in a ministry delivering federal social programs, like unemployment insurance and pensions. Her last job involved the implementation of the Common Experience Payment. This was the largest government program to offer reparations for the wrongs suffered by the indigenous population in Canada in residential schools, which were run for 150 years by the Catholic and Unitarian Churches. The schools have recently been characterized as sites of cultural genocide.Kate Korycki is completing her doctorate in political science at the University of Toronto. She holds an MA in Political Science from McGill University. Her broad research agenda concerns the politics of identity, belonging, and conflict. In her doctoral work she is concentrating on the politics of identity in time of transition. Recent years have seen tremendous growth of interest in narrative approaches to research in both the social sciences and the humanities. Much of this research focuses on the stories of individuals and how they tell them. This article addresses the contribution of a symbolic interactionist approach to develop the “collective story” (Richardson 1990) through the use of sensitizing concepts. It focuses on research on the experience of widows, widowers, and Iranian Bahá’í refugees to Canada to demonstrate how one can use sensitizing concepts to craft a collective story of members of marginalized populations that sit at the bottom of the “hierarchy of credibility” (Becker 1967).

Statisticians are constantly looking for methods of statistical inference that would be both effective and would require meeting as few assumptions as possible. Permutation tests seem to fit here, as using them makes it possible to perform statistical inference in situations where classical parametric tests do not work. Permutation tests appear to be comparably powerful to parametric tests, but require meeting fewer assumptions, e.g. regarding the size of the sample or the from of distribution of the tested variable in a population. The presented tests make it possible to verify the overall hypothesis about the identity of both location and scale parameters in the studied populations. In literature, the Lepage test and the Cucconi test are most often referred to in this context. The paper considers various forms of test statistics, and presents a simulation study carried out to determine the size and power of the tests under normality. As the study demonstrated, the advantage of the proposed method is that it can be applied to small-size samples. A nonparametric, complex procedure was used to assess the overall ASL (achieved significance level) value by applying the permutation principle. For comparative purposes, the results for the permutation Lepage test and the permutation Cucconi test are also presented.

The HLA system is highly polymorphic and commonly used as a marker to understand core population genetical aspects such as stratification, human migration, predisposition to diseases and tissue transplantation compatibility. Although HLA alleles are generally treated as equidistant molecular units in population genetic studies, the diversity of DNA allelic frequencies among populations is also considered to be crucial to interpret the observed HLA polymorphisms. This study compares the variation of HLA DRB1 alleles across various subgroups of both Indian and African Populations, using their respective allelic frequencies. The HLA DRB1 allelic frequencies for 3,153 individuals of 32 subgroups of both Indian and African populations, were collected from the Allele Frequency Net Database (AFND). Correlation matrix and Grid diagram were compiled using the R statistical package. Allele frequencies were analyzed for the respective population subgroups using XLSTAT. The North East Indian populations were completely devoid of HLA DRB1* 16, which is fairly present in south Indian populations. The South Indian populations harbor both HLA DRB1* 10 and HLA DRB1* 15 at relatively higher levels but are very scarce of HLA DRB1* 07, HLA DRB1* 09, HLA DRB1* 12 and HLA DRB1* 13. The alleles HLA DRB1* 03, HLA DRB1* 04 and HLA DRB1* 07 could represent an epicenter for the admixture of African, North-East Indian and South Indian populations.

Farmers' social insurance system is financed by the state budget to a considerable degree. It results from low premium paid by insured, as well as the lack of its resistance towards changes in demographic potential. In the face of that, considering both economic and demographic factors the farmers' social insurance system reform should be introduced.
