Opis:
Seasonal changes in the morphometric and physiological parameters of the cockle Cerastoderma glaucum (Bivalvia) from the Baltic Sea (GD), the North Sea (LV), and the Mediterranean Sea (BL) were investigated. The cockles from GD were much smaller than those from other populations due to osmotic stress. The female to male ratios did not differ significantly from 1 : 1. The northern populations (GD, LV) had a monocyclic reproductive pattern, whereas the southern population (BL) seemed to reproduce throughout the year. Seasonal changes in the contents of biochemical components appeared to be correlated with changes in trophic conditions and the reproductive cycle. Protein content was the highest in spring for all the populations. The highest lipid contents and lowest carbohydrate contents were noted in GD and BL in spring, while no marked differences were noted among seasons in LV (probably because the data from both sexes were pooled). Respiration rates in GD were the highest among the populations, which could have been due to osmotic stress. High metabolic rates expressed by high respiration rates in GD and LV in spring and autumn could have resulted from gamete development (in spring) and phytoplankton blooms (in spring and autumn).

Opis:
Population parameters of Sitophilus granarius (L.) were measured under various conditions of temperaturę and relative humidity. The range of five examined temperatures (15 to 35°C) had a remarkably stronger effect on all examined parameters than applied range of two relative humidities (75%; 85 or 95% ). The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) and the highest finite rate of increase (lambda) were recorded when temperatures of 25 and 30°C were used. The generation time (T) ranged from approximately 10 weeks at 30°C and 75 or 85% RH to approximately 22 weeks when 15°C was used. At 35°C there were no survivors of any immature stages of S. granarius regardless of relative humidity, so population parameters could not be counted. A brief narrative is presented on the potential of these environmental variables for control applications.
Określono parametry populacyjne wołka zbożowego Sitophilus granarius hodowanego w kontrolowanych warunkach temperatury i wilgotności względnej powietrza. Zakres pięciu testowanych temperatur (od 15 do 35°C) miał silniejszy wpływ na testowane parametry niż zakres dwóch użytych w testach wartości wilgotności względnej powietrza (75%; 85 lub 95%). Najwyższe wartości wrodzonego tempa wzrostu populacji (rm) i tempa zwiększenia liczebności populacji (lambda) rejestrowano w testach, gdzie zastosowano temperaturę 25 i 30°C. Czas rozwoju pokolenia (T) wynosił: 10 tygodni przy temperaturze 30°C i 22 tygodnie w temperaturze 15°C. W temperaturze 35°C owady w ogóle nie rozwijały się.

Opis:
Treating the laser medium quantum mechanically and the laser electric field classically, a mathematical model was developed to study a laser field inside a single mode optical cavity by numerical and analytical techniques. The simulations for threshold population, population inversion and average population with electric field frequency for 500 kHz resonance frequency of the atom are presented. The gain coefficient and the pump parameter with the frequency of the cavity electric field for 1000 kHz resonance frequency of the atom were simulated. The threshold population is a minimum when the frequency of electric field is equal to the resonance frequency of the atom. The population inversion varies sinusoidal with time and the frequency of the electric field and is a maximum at the threshold frequency of the atom. The saturated laser intensity at steady state increases linearly with the pump parameter and for larger values of the pump parameter, a smaller time is needed to reach the saturation of the laser field.

Opis:
A stage-structured population model with unknown parameters is considered. Our purpose is to study the identifiability of the model and to develop a parameter estimation procedure. First, we analyze whether the parameter vector can or cannot uniquely be determined with the knowledge of the input-output behavior of the model. Second, we analyze how the information in the experimental data is translated into the parameters of the model. Furthermore, we propose a process to improve the recursive values of the parameters when successive observation data are considered. The structure of the state matrix leads to an analysis of the inverse of a sum of rank-one matrices.

Opis:
There are reasons researchers may be interested in accounting for spatial heterogeneity of preferences, including avoiding model misspecification and the resulting bias, and deriving spatial maps of willingness-to-pay (WTP), which are relevant for policy-making and environmental management. We employ a Monte Carlo simulation of three econometric approaches to account for spatial preference heterogeneity in discrete choice models. The first is based on the analysis of individual-specific estimates of the mixed logit model. The second extends this model to explicitly account for spatial autocorrelation of random parameters, instead of simply conditioning individual-specific estimates on population-level distributions and individuals’ choices. The third is the geographically weighted multinomial logit model, which incorporates spatial dimensions using geographical weights to estimate location-specific choice models. We analyze the performance of these methods in recovering population-, region- and individual-level preference parameter estimates and implied WTP in the case of spatial preference heterogeneity. We find that, although ignoring spatial preference heterogeneity did not significantly bias population-level results of the simple mixed logit model, neither individual-specific estimates nor the geographically weighted multinomial logit model was able to reliably recover the true region- and individual-specific parameters. We show that the spatial mixed logit proposed in this study is promising and outline possibilities for future development.

Opis:
The research was conducted with a view to establishing physiological parameters of the silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) with regard to germination energy, absolute germination and genetic overload produced by silver fir populations. The intention was to identify significant variability within populations and subpopulations, or rather within the two combined, and to give recommendations on the usage and usability of seeds from specific populations. The results form a basis for establishing silver fir genetic overload within five fir populations of central Bosnia and Herzegovina. The results of research on the characteristics such as absolute seed weight, germination energy and absolute germination are within a scope of previous studies. The studied physiological characteristics of silver fir seeds in the central Bosnia area showed distinct individual and inter-population variability when compared to variability of the subpopulations analyzed. The inclusion of non-physiological data (height, DBH, age and the presence of mistletoe) concerning sampled trees proved to be effective new quality of research. No correlation was found between DBH and seed physiological characteristics but increased tree height had a positive effect on seed quality in terms of absolute germination and growth, proportional to tree height. This in turn shows that seeds should be collected only from trees of above average height, because they are less genetically overloaded. The characteristics of healthy but ungerminated seeds from less tall trees displayed lower parameter values, also indicating that seeds should be collected from taller than average trees only. The presence of mistletoe had a very interesting effect of increasing rotten seeds percentage, and therefore reducing seed quality. Accordingly, seed collection should be limited to trees not affected by mistletoe, however further research on this aspect is required.
