Opis:
This article discusses plurilingualism in the dialect comedies of Molisan playwright Antonio Angelone. After a brief biographical sketch of the author, the rich, expressive, and authentic dialect spoken by his protagonists from the peasant class is analysed. Furthermore, essential details and examples pertaining to Angelone’s keen awareness of the challenges of writing in dialect are provided. The most fundamental part of this essay focuses on the plurilingual aspects that—certainly not extraneous to literary production in Italy—fully manifest themselves in Angelone’s comedies; this occurs through characters created by a playwright who excels at highlighting how important it is to employ linguistic varieties adapted to the circumstances and needs of the protagonists to make the theatrical experience more authentic and more credible for the reader/viewer. Along with the dialect or dialects, there are examples of Standard Italian, popular Italian, and italiese, or the language of North-American Italians, in the repertoire of the protagonists, pronounced by characters who belong to different generations, who are from different social classes, and who come from different geographical areas.

Opis:
Courses on popular music were sparsely introduced in Italian universities in the late 1900s – early 2000s, and are still included under the umbrellas of other disciplines (ethnomusicology, media and communication studies, sociology). An official disciplinary sector including popular music does not exist. However, research on popular music has existed in Italy at least since the 1960s, two important international conferences took place in Italy (as early as in 1983, and in 2005), and Italian popular music scholars are known internationally and have been members of associations, editorial boards, scientific committees. To explain this contradiction, a long historical period has to be overviewed. It’s a very specific Italian story. Or maybe not.

The book contributes to the canonization of an Italian classic long neglected by those critics who still consider horror movies a low-rated subgenre comparable to B-movies.

Italian theater studies in 20th century focused on the theater as the art of staging a dramatic text and it’s analysis. Over the past decade, theater anthropology and performance studies make their way among these relics of the past century slowly but effectively, and the sources of the Italian performance studies are indicated in the 1960s and 1970s. Meanwhile, the interest of Italian researchers in restored behavior is reflected in texts published in-between the two world wars. The subject of the analysis are two texts by Corrado Pavolini who we consider to be a precursor of Italian performance studies.

Sostene M. ZangariUniversity of MilanItaly“Things Change but the Amerecano Is Here to Stay”: America in Italian Popular Movies of the 1980sThe article focuses on a number of film comedies of the early 1980s. In different ways, the movies rearticulate the relationship between Italy and the United States. In showing how Italians can beat Americans at sports, how they can indulge in conspicuous consumption and finally how even the United States are not alien to provincialism and backwardness, these movies express a new mood of confidence that was widely felt in Italian society at the time. However, these movies came at a moment when the Italian film industry was on the verge of its decline. Starting from the 1980s, in fact, American movies and distributors would colonize the Italian movie market and depress the Italian movie industry.

In The Rhetoric of Empire (1993), David Spurr analyzes journalistic discourse on the Third World and isolates a nucleus of rhetorical figures around which representations of the colonial and post-colonial other are articulated. In this paper, I will borrow, in particular, three of these rhetorical figures (naturalization, idealization, appropriation) and I will adapt them to the context of contemporary Anglo-American representations of Italian culture in popular literature. I will argue that a substantial number of contemporary works on Italy retains the basic assumption of a world ordered around a dichotomy between modern cultures and pre-modern ones, and makes of this taxonomy the basic spatiotemporal context for its narratives.

Opis:
On June 15, 1389 Serbian troops and their allies were defeated by the Turks on the Kosovo field. Many valiant Christian fighters and the Serbian prince Lazar Hrebljanović, who was sanctified by the Orthodox Church, fell in the battle. The disaster of the Christian army paved the way for the Ottoman invasion of the Balkan Peninsula, but the defeat assumed the value of a myth for the Serbian people, which accompanied their existence over the centuries as a model of sacrifice and love of the country.
