Opis:
Microcystis blooms and the related toxin known as microcystin-LR (MC-LR) put the safety of human water consumption and global irrigation practices in jeopardy. MC-LR is widely distributed in various environments, including water, sediments, plants, and other aquatic organisms. The use of water-containing microcystins for agricultural purposes may have to be restricted despite the limited availability of clean water resources. Accordingly, the present work aimed to determine the MC-LR concentrations and recognize the environmental parameters that initiate the growth of toxic cyanobacteria and MC-LR occurrence in 20 irrigation ponds in the Jordan Valley area. The irrigation ponds studied were found in a hypereutrophic condition, with high levels of N:P ratio and low transparency. These cause inseparable effects such as cyanobacterial bloom and MC-LR occurrence. The investigated ponds were classified as hypereutrophic according to General Quality Index (GQI), with two different types of algae covering the surface. The first was the Lemna sp. or duckweeds (Family Araceae) which are free-floating masses, and the second was the cyanobacteria algal bloom. Unpaired t-tests were performed and showed that the concentrations of MC-LR in pond water abundant with cyanobacteria algal bloom in September 2021 were significantly higher (P = 0.7906) than in June for the same year (0.3022 ± 0.0444 and 0.1048 ± 0.0171 ppb, respectively). Two methods for extracting MC-LR were used and showed a significant difference in MC-LR concentration in ponds with an abundance of cyanobacteria algal blooms (0.2273 ± 0.0356 ppb) compared to the ponds with an abundance of Lemna sp. or duckweeds collected in June 2021 (0.1048 ± 0.0171 ppb). Despite all of the efforts made by Jordan Valley farmers to prevent or limit the mass growth of cyanobacteria and its consequences for the eutrophication process in their irrigation ponds through the use of fish breading and chemicals such as copper sulfate, this environmental problem is still harming their crops and irrigation methods and requires immediate government assistance.

This paper explores one aspect in the evolution of “buddha-nature” (busshō) in Japan within the context of Buddhist teachings regarding women’s salvation. “Buddha-nature”, symbolised by the lotus throne where buddhas and bodhisattvas reside, was fused with the notion of menstrual impurity due to syncretism with Shintō beliefs. The introduction of the Bloody Pond Sutra (Ketsubon-kyō) solidified discussions on menstruation’s origin, attributing menstrual impurity to women’s “mind” poisons. Practical manifestations of this complex idea included wearing chest talismans. This research sheds light on the evolving “Buddha-nature” concept in Japan and its implications for women’s spirituality.

To analyze the composition of norfloxacin-resistant bacteria and norfloxacin-degrading bacteria in pond water and sediment in subtropical China, the composition of antibiotic resistant bacteria in pond water and sediment enriched with norfloxacin-containing medium was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. Sediment and water samples were collected from 3 fish ponds in subtropical China, and domesticated with norfloxacin, subsequently norfloxacin-resistant bacteria through high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA, and isolated norfloxacin--degrading bacteria. Our results showed that the pond sediment and water contain a variety of norfloxacin-resistant bacteria, mainly from Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi. Moreover, we isolated two norfloxacin-degrading bacteria (NorXu-2 and NorXu-3). The norfloxacin-degrading rate by NorXu-2 and NorXu-3 in the culture mediums with 200 μg/mL was the highest, which was up to 49.71% and 35.79%, respectively. When the norfloxacin concentration was 200 μg/mL, NorXu-2 and NorXu-3 had the best norfloxacin- -degrading effect at pH of 6, and the degradation rates were 53.64% and 45.54%, respectively. Moreover, NorXu-3 exhibited a good tolerance to high NaCl concentration. These results not only provided basic data for the follow-up study of the molecular mechanism of antimicrobial microbial degradation, but also provided potential norfloxacin degrading bacteria for norfloxacin removal and bioremediation in aquaculture environment.

Opis:
The pond slider Trachemys scripta is one of the most widespread alien turtle species in the world. Its unregulated trade and the consequent uncontrolled releases into the wild led to negative impacts on the native turtles of the invaded areas. In Italy, alien pond sliders are widely spread, and the occurrence of hatchlings and well-established populations is known in some areas. However, to date in Sicily, only a single female of Trachemys scripta laying eggs was reported. Besides that, nothing is known about the actual reproduction success and establishment of self-sustaining T. scripta populations in Sicily. Therefore, based on 14 previously characterised highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, we aimed to unravel if the alien turtles successfully reproduce in Sicily, in both natural and semi-natural areas (i.e., lake “Biviere di Gela” and “Parco d’Orléans”, respectively). Our results show a clear structuring of the two studied populations. Several full-sibling relationships between the sampled turtles were found, suggesting actual reproduction in the wild of the pond sliders in Sicily. However, further sampling is desirable since no parent-offspring relationships were observed in the studied populations. Due to our results, systematic monitoring of alien pond sliders in the whole of Sicily is crucial for better planning of mitigation strategies in order to protect the native biota of Sicilian inland waters.

Aquaculture plays a great role in producing foodstuffs, sustaining inland capture fisheries and providing employment. The key to future development in pond aquaculture is diversification of production technology, intensity, and function connected to increasing the environmental value of pond areas. New production systems involve a combination of intensive and extensive pond culture, increasing productivity and improving nutrient utilisation and fish species diversification. The most important principle of these systems is the possibility to use the wastes from intensive aquaculture as the input for extensive, environment-friendly fish production. These systems were proven to be profitable and sustainable in tropical and subtropical areas. However, for temperate climatic conditions, such data are scarce. For this reason, we decided to discuss modifications that, in our opinion, can be applied in an extensive part of the integrated intensive-extensive system in temperate climatic conditions in order to increase the overall productivity of the pond aquaculture.

Following China's economic development, lots of tailing deposits have become potential pollution sources, and their leaching would release the trace elements into the natural environment. The leakage rate model and the solute transport models of groundwater are coupled to investigate the effects of the tailing ponds on groundwater. It indicates that the anti-seepage layer is a necessary and important component of the tailing ponds, which could protect the soil or groundwater to be polluted by wastewater. Under three scenarios (scenario A - ideal conditions, scenario B - the worst conditions, and scenario C), the proportions of maximum concentration to source concentration are 1.2, 94.6, and 19.1%, respectively. Under the worst states of anti-seepage layers, the pollution areas after 730, 1800, 3807 and 7300 days were 130 500, 313 200, 523 800, and 729 000 m2, respectively. Compared with Scenario B, the pollution areas of Scenario C after 1800, 3807, and 7300 days were cut by 52.97, 74.55, and 81.73, respectively. Given important anti-seepage layers, the tracking monitor system is necessary and important to discover whether the groundwater was contaminated in time.

While high production of palm oil improves the community economy, it has the potential to damage the environment because it produces the waste containing quite a lot of residual oil. The wastewater generated by this production process flows into the cooling pond before it is further processed in aerobic and anaerobic ponds. The residual oil contained in the cooling pond can be collected and used, e.g. as raw material for biodiesel production. This research aimed to produce biodiesel by utilizing the oil extracted from cooling pond wastewater through the esterification method with a sulfonated carbon catalyst and a transesterification method with the $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst. The sulfonated carbon catalyst was made from the palm kernel shells as a solid waste of the palm oil plant. In order to study the optimum amount of catalyst usage, the catalyst ratio was varied, i.e. 8–16% for the esterification process and 1–3% for the transesterification process. The reuse performance of sulfonated carbon catalysts was varied three times. On the basis of the research results, sulfonated carbon catalysts were proven to be effective as heterogeneous catalysts in the esterification process because they can reduce acid level to below 5 mg KOH/g oil. The sulfonated carbon catalyst ratio of 12% was the optimum ratio which can reduce the acid level to 4.62 mg KOH/g oil. The reuse of sulfonated carbon can reduce the acid level to 6.9 mg KOH/g oil at the first reuse. In the transesterification process, the optimum ratio of the $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst of 3% was found. The biodiesel produced has met the biodiesel characteristics of National Indonesian Standard (SNI of 7182:2015) with the saponification number of 197.18 mg KOH/g oil, free glycerol of 0.09%, FAME content of 96.79%, and density of 886 kg/$m^3$.

Due to the high nutrient and organic matter contents of fish pond water, the water must be treated before disposal to prevent the eutrophication and deterioration of natural receiving waters. Floating wetlands (FTWs) and biofilters are environmentally friendly ecological treatments that can be used for this water. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the performance of FTWs with biofilters (FTW/Bs) for nutrient and organic compound removal. Two FTW/ Bs were applied in a pond with 5,000 Nile tilapia. The macrophyte species in the FTWs were Cyperus (Cyperus spp.) and Heliconia (Heliconia spp.). The buoyant mats of the FTWs were made from bamboo, and 200 bioballs were loaded below the mats. The water quality parameters in the pond were monitored for 5 weeks between the control test without the FTW/Bs and the experimental test with FTW/Bs at sites 1 (S1) to 8 (S8). The FTW/Bs were located at sites 2 (S2) and 3 (S3). The results showed reductions in all water quality parameters except orthophosphate (ortho-P) at S2 and S3. The COD, BOD, NH4-N, and SS at S2 and S3 parameters during the experimental test were significantly lower than those during the control test, in the ranges of 20.34–33.96, 25.47–29.41, 25.86–27.87, and 26.00–28.44%, respectively.

In this paper, a qualitative safety analysis of the Żelazny Most tailings pond is addressed. This object is one of the largest facilities of this type in the world being a crucial element in the technological line of copper production in KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. The assessment of the effectiveness of two types of preventive measures, i.e., relief wells and loading berms, is investigated based on displacement and stability analysis of two 2D cross-sections in a technical section of the dam. The study shows that the considered preventive measures generally have a positive impact on increasing the safety level of the structure during its further raise. In particular, their effectiveness is most evident when they are applied simultaneously. It is eventually suggested that the selection of final solutions to be applied on the facility should be based on the quantitative 3D analysis.

The present study investigated the efficiency of four aquatic macrophytes: Lemna spp, Pistia stratiotes, Ipomoea aquatica and Eichhornia crassipes on nitrogen and phosphorous utilization from aquacultural effluents concerning seasonal changes and biomass production. These nutrients in excess affect fish health and cause eutrophication in water bodies, hence affecting the ecosystem. Aquatic macrophytes were planted in tanks filled with the effluents from carp pond and other tanks were left without plants, serving as control/algal treatment. The water samples were collected weekly for analysis of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), total phosphorus (TP) and ortho-phosphate (ortho-P). The results show that average water temperature raised from 12.2 ± 0.21 °C in winter to 32.0 ± 0.4 °C in summer with no significant difference (p>0.05) between treatments whereas pH was neutral in winter and slightly alkaline in the other seasons. Seasonal changes had impact on macrophytes biomass accumulation with the highest in spring for Lemna spp (91.3%), followed by P. stratiotes (81%) and in summer, E. crassipes (64%). Autumn and winter had the lowest biomass accumulation and I. aquatica had the lowest values in all seasons. For each season, the nutrients concentration decreased with no significant difference (p>0.05) between treatments. Average NH3-N removal efficiencies were higher during summer and autumn followed by spring and lowest in winter for all treatments. NO3-N and TN decreased significantly from the highest in summer to the lowest in winter in all treatments. The ortho-P removal efficiency was slightly higher than TP and decreased from the highest in spring to the lowest in winter (91.4% to 7.8%, control/algae; 90.3% to 8.4%, E. crassipes; 86.2% to 8.3%, Lemna spp; 82.5% to 10.8%, P. stratiotes). The chlorophyll a concentration was higher in Lemna spp (62.2 μg/L) and control/microalgae treatments (59.3 μg/L) indicating that there was probably microbial community that contributed to nutrient utilization. Aquatic macrophytes, in association with microalgae, were responsible for the nitrogen and phosphorous removal. Seasonal temperature change affects the growth and nutrients uptake of aquatic macrophytes. A decrease in temperature reduces the efficiency of nutrients removal and biomass production. For an effective N and P removal from pond effluents in a given season, selection of a proper aquatic macrophyte must be taken into consideration with regards to a given season.

Żelazny Most tailings pond
Opis:
The study was carried out on the Cu and Zn content of plant material (wheat grain, hay and potato tubers) and animal food products (cow’s milk, hen’s eggs and chicken meat) collected in the vicinity of the Żelazny Most waste treatment tailings pond (Lower Silesia, Poland). The samples for the study accomplished in 2016-2018 were collected from the places located in the nearest vicinity of the tailings pond (6 farms within a distance shorter than 4 km – zone I) and those located further away (6 farms within a distance from 4 to 10 km from the tailings pond – zone II). Copper and Zn concentrations were measured on a Varian Spectra AA220 Fast Sequential atomic absorption spectrophotmeter. The mean values of Cu noted in wheat grain harvested in the years under investigation ranged from 3.87 to 5.27 mg kg-1 DM, while the maximum value was 6.97 mg kg-1 DM. The highest accumulation of Cu and Zn was in hay (max. 10.10 and 99.04 mg kg-1 DM, respectively), while the lowest values were noted in milk and eggs. The zinc content of cow’s milk was found within the range from 2.64 to 4.01 mg kg-1 FM and the highest amount was 6.32 mg kg-1 FM. It was also found the mean Cu concentrations in poultry meat varied from 0.53 to 1.55 mg kg-1 FM and the maximum value was 3.50 mg kg-1 FM. No significant differences between zones I and II were observed (p≤0.05). The current results are comparable with those obtained in 2007 and 2013. With only a few exceptions, the biomonitoring studies did not show that the levels of the two metals in the biological material tested exceeded data reported in the Polish and international literature. Nowadays, there is no reason to consider the Żelazny Most tailings pond to be an toxicological threat to the natural and agricultural environment regarding Cu and Zn, but its periodic biomonitoring is necessary due to the chemical properties of these two elements and their potential effect on some environmental factors.
