Opis:
Poly(vinyl alcohol) films were prepared with manganous chloride (MnCl2 · 4H2O) and glycerin as complex plasticizer. The micro morphology of pure PVA film and complex plasticizer plasticized PVA films was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The interaction between complex plasticizer and PVA molecules was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The influence of complex plasticizer on crystalline, thermal and mechanical properties of PVA films was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and tensile testing, respectively. The results showed that the complex plasticizer of MnCl2 · 4H2O/glycerin could interacted with PVA molecular and then effectively destroy the crystals of PVA. PVA films plasticized with complex plasticizer of MnCl2 · 4H2O/glycerin became soft and ductile, with lower tensile strength and higher elongation at break compared with PVA films. This is an important cause of plasticization of the complex plasticizer of MnCl2 · 4H2O/glycerin on PVA films.

Opis:
Surface properties of composites containing chitosan (Ch), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) were investigated by contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thin films of Ch/HAP and Ch/PVA/HAP composites have been formed by casting methods from acetic acid solutions. Measurements of the contact angle for diiodomethane (D), and glycerol (G) on the surface of chitosan films, Ch/HAP and chitosan/PVA/HAP films were made and surface free energy was calculated. It was found that chitosan/HAP or Ch/PVA/HAP blend surface is enriched in high surface energy component i.e. chitosan. The study of composites by AFM showed a completely different morphology when compared with unmodified components. The roughness of composites increase after the addition of hydroxyapatite. This may indicates a strong interaction between the polymeric components and inorganic additive.

Opis:
In the present paper, the results of viscosity measurements in dilute solutions of microcrystalline chitosan (MCCh) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of different degrees of hydrolysis are presented. Microcrystalline chitosan is blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous 0.1 MCH3COOH/0.2 M NaCl. Viscosity measurements of dilute polymer solution were carried out in an Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. The final result depends on (I) the thermodynamic goodness of the solvent, on (II) the applied extrapolation method used for determination of the interaction parameters, on (III) the assumed miscibility criteria, on (IV) the degree of hydrolysis of PVA, and on (V) the blend composition.

Opis:
In the present study the results of rheological measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM) of polymer composites with montmorillonite (MMT) are presented. Chitosan is blended with synthetic polymers and inorganic additives in acetic acid solution and this solution is cast to prepare the mixture film. Flow measurements were made on a Bohlin Visco 88 rotary viscometer in the temperature range 25ºC-40ºC. The apparent shear viscosity and rheological parameters of the unmodified components and their composites were determined and discussed. Polymer films were examined using a Scanning Probe Microscopy SPM production Veeco. The obtained results suggest that the modification of several properties of polymer composites is a consequence of the interaction between the polymeric components and inorganic additives.

Opis:
In the present paper, the results of thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and atomic force microscopy studies of microcrystalline chitosan (MCCh) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are presented. Microcrystalline chitosan is blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) in acetic acid solution and this solution is cast to prepare the blend film. From thermal curves the thermal transitions: Tg, Tm and characteristic temperatures of decomposition: Tdi, Tmax have been determined and compared. The influence of the degree of PVA hydrolysis on the thermal properties of blend systems has been discussed. The surface properties of the MCCh and PVA films and their blends have been studied by tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). The changes of topography images were considered by determining the root mean square (RMS) deviation in the image data. The obtained results suggested that in solid MCCh/PVA mixtures the components are poorly miscible.

Opis:
In recent times, electrospinning has become a well known and widely investigated process used for manufacturing nano or/and micro fibres with electrostatic forces between two electrodes. Various additives such as silver, starch, copper, etc. are used in electrospinning to achieve specific properties. Amber is a natural material which has a positive influence on human health and wound healing. However, no information about the electrospinnig of amber particles has been found. In this paper, the possibility of electrospun nanofibrous web formation via electrospinning equipment (NanospiderTM) from poly(vinyl alcohol) solution with solid particles of Baltic amber is presented. It was determined that the maximum size of amber particles which can be transferred from the solution to the electrospun web is around 50 μm, while the probable optimal size of amber particles for electrospinning is below approximately 10 μm.

Opis:
The cornstarch: poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films characterized by the alternating ratio of starch:PVA (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100) and containing 30% of glycerol were prepared by solution casting. The films were irradiated with an absorbed dose of 25 kGy with gamma rays in a vacuum and with fast electrons in the air. The films characterized by a high content of starch appeared stiff, while the films characterized by a high content of PVA were highly flexible. The tensile strength and flexibility, as well as swelling and hydrophilicity, increased with the increase in the PVA content in the films. However, the tensile strength and wetting angle values achieved a minimum at an intermediate composition. It was found that irradiation enables to reduce hydrophilicity of the films accompanied by a decrease in their flexibility. No general conclusion concerning the effect of irradiation on tensile strength and swelling behavior can be derived. An increase in the homogeneity of the films and an increase in the compatibility of their components was found by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Strong interactions of the starch and the PVA components were discovered by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Degradation was found to be the prevailing process occurring in the films under the infl uence of irradiation. The possible accompanying crosslinking is discussed in terms of the gel content in the samples. Creation of various oxidation products in the films characterized by the modified composition was observed under the influence of irradiation carried out in the air. Basing on the obtained results it can be supposed that the selected starch-PVA compositions might appear useful as packagings of the products predicted for radiation decontamination.

Opis:
In the present paper, results from rheological measurements and tensile tests of polymer blends containing chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) with different additions of an ionic liquid are presented. Flow measurements were carried out using solutions of pure polymers and their blends with and without the addition of an ionic liquid. It has been observed that the polymer solutions and their blends exhibited non-Newtonian behaviour. Rheological parameters from the power law and activation energy of viscous flow were determined and discussed. Mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength and ultimate percentage of elongation of films, have been determined and compared. This study thus shows that the addition of an ionic liquid is an effective method for improving the flexibility of chitosan blends.

Opis:
The paper discusses the effect of ionizing radiation on the functional properties of the biodegradable starch:PVA films. The analysis is related to the possible use of the material for packing the products (particularly, food) that are predicted for radiation decontamination and to the potential modifi cation of the material by radiation treatment. Our previous results have shown that the infl uence of ionizing radiation on the films’ properties varied for the specific compositions (differing in starch:PVA ratio or the type of substrates) and depended on irradiation conditions. However, these studies considered only the irradiation performed in gamma chamber or in e-beam using a dose of 25 kGy. Therefore, the present study deals with the effect of the irradiations performed using various doses on the selected promising starch:PVA composition. The films characterized by starch:PVA weight ratio of 45:55 was obtained by solution casting and irradiated with fast electrons in air and with 60Co gamma rays in nitrogen applying the doses of 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 50, and 75 kGy. No regular dependence has been noticed between the composition of films (differing in the starch and PVA content) and the intensities of the particular bands in the UV-VIS DRS spectra after irradiation. The results indicated strong interaction of the starch and PVA components in the films and the occurrence of specific reactions in each composition upon irradiation. No special differences were observed between tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the non-irradiated films characterized by the starch:PVA ratio equal to 45:55 and the samples irradiated using doses in the range of 5–75 kGy. Similarly, no differences were observed in both cases between the swelling capability of the non-irradiated and the irradiated films. However, it can be deduced that solubility in water increased when the radiation dose increased. The results show that using the doses till the range 25 kGy does not cause an essential change of all the examined properties of the starch:PVA (45:55) films. Accordingly, starch:PVA (45:55) films might be considered suitable for packing food predicted for radiation decontamination.
