- The problem seems to be fundamental for historian, because it is an idea, even more, a dream of the ultimate proof, absolute track, which will hit the past as it really was. Despite all the postmodern undermining this faith, the primary goal of historian’s work is looking for new and better sources, discovering something unknown before - I mean something what existed, but was forgotten, relegated to oblivion. However archive consists of what has been deposited there, and not for any other purpose but just for use by the historians . In addition, archive is not a collection of random items, but a construct of its creators, who gathered appraised material according to a certain order. I repeatedly travelled over the territory of the former Polish Livonia in the hope that I can find a part of this great panorama of Polish-Livonian culture. I am stubbornly convicted: there was and there is not any more. I cannot find anything else, and even if I get to the new ruins of the minor court, another cemetery of Polish names on the tombstones, to another Catholic church, where the priest speaks Polish - this does not result in any new revelation right now, to a hypothetical Livonian archives will not be added any new significant facts.
