Opis:
The study of political activity among the elderly has prompted some American researchers to take up research on “political gerontology” in the late 1970s. One of the effects of the increasing political activity of seniors, but also the growing number of 65+ voters was the emergence a new type of party that uniquely identified with senior citizens and in the wider sense ‒ the elderly, focusing both on demands typical for this electorate. The first party of its kind in Europe was the Italian Pensioners’ Party, founded in October 1987. The Balkan pensioners’ parties in the majority of cases were among the typical post-communist “demanding parties”, expressing the frustration of people, who lost social prestige and financial stability during the economic transformation. Some of them noted significant success by entering into the ruling coalitions (Serbia, Slovenia). Their successes generated the creation of new pensioners’ parties in Kosovo and Macedonia. The programs of Balkan pensioners’ parties are directed to the entire society, expressing sensitivity to the interests of excluding groups but it is hard to find visible references to elderly problems understood as a social and demographic challenge. The political activity of the Balkan “grey parties” does not seem as a form of elders’ emancipation but only as a defense of the pensions and social privileges inherited from the communist times.

Opis:
The article is an example of a discourse analysis dedicated to the decreasing relevance of the left-wing politics in Poland. In the course of the article author, first, reconstructs explanatory factors behind the phenomenon of the „disappearing left in Poland” that has been proposed by several authors since the 90s. In the second step, author applies this framework to the field of parliamentary politics, political discourses as well as to wider political context (i.e. media). The explanatory factors has been classified into five groups: adaptation (adjusting the left to the neoliberal order), denial (unsuccessful defense of leftist values and tradition), misrepresentation (consent of the political elites of the left to changing political affiliation of the trade unions that folated towards the conservative right), capture (exploitation of the crucial elements of the doctrine like „welfare state” by the national- Catholic milieus), incoherence (different ideological priorities of the „young” and „old” activists of the Left) and eventually liked with the „vanishing voter” situation in Poland.

Opis:
European Parliamentary election 2014 were the third elections for countries that joined European Union in 2004, including Poland. As we may observe from the very beginning of the EP’s history, elections suffer constant drop in voter turnout, and since 1999 the turnout total for less than 50%. There are many theories explaining this state of affairs, with most notable “second-order elections” and democracy deficit theories. Polish profile of voter turnout in EP elections seems to fit into frameworks of these theories, and is positioned among EU’s members with the lowest turnout. What is specific for electoral behaviour in Poland is stability: the turnout and support for political parties seems to stable and even petrified. This assessment seems to be supported by the results of election within past four years, both on aggregate and individual levels of data.

Opis:
The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), a successor of the Bulgarian Communist Party, retained a dominant position among left-wing political groups in the country. This position of the post-communist party made it increasingly difficult for other leftist groups to emerge on the Bulgarian political scene. The most successful attempt to break this monopoly was made by the Bulgarian Euroleft (BEL), established in February 1997. Changes in the BSP’s management and the election failure of 1997 made it possible to begin cooperation with other leftist parties, aiming at establishing the New Left coalition. The political treaty signed on 7 January 2001 ended the 100 years of competition between left-wing and centre-left parties and strengthened the position of the BSP as a leader among Bulgarian left-wing parties.

Opis:
W artykule podjęto próbę opisu i analizy wizerunku byłego premiera.
This article is dedicated to the image of the former Prime Minister of Spain, J.L. Rodriguez Zapatero aQer the two-term rule of the socialist Partido Obrero Español in December 2011. An attempt was made to check what happens to the politician, and more precisely to his image, at the end of a polit-ical career. Is this, at the moment, possible to change the political image? Is the former prime min-ister somehow still interesting for the media and why? In the last period of his tenure, and just aQer the end of his reign Zapatero had a bad reputation. AQer leaving Moncloi decided to withdraw from the political scene and public life. Initially, he was a moderate and distant to current political events as a result of which the representatives of the Partido Popular acknowledged that Zapatero was “the worst prime minister and best former prime minister ." Is this definition still valid? Is Zapatero still politically correct? This article attempts to describe and analyze the image of the former prime minister.

The paper is an attempt at theoretical and empirical research into a peculiar phenomenon in politics, namely the collapse of a political actor. The paper presents fragments of both quantitative and qualitative sociological research conducted in 2007 as part of my PhD dissertation “The League of Polish Families as a social actor.” The studies address the fundamental question: what were the causes of the collapse of the national-patriotic party, the League of Polish Families in 2007? Undoubtedly, its fall was influenced not only by the mistakes made within party structures, but also by the lack of intellectual support making the League of Polish Families’ program competitive in relation to other actors of Polish political scene.

Opis:
The assessment of the Polish Third Republic was undoubtedly an important plane of polarisation of the contemporary Polish political scene. After the post-communist division, in which a key role was played by the assessment of the PPR, there was a post-Solidarity division, and the dispute axis was found in the assessment of the regime and economic transformation and the state of the nation under the rule of the Democratic Left Alliance. Lack of decommunisation and only partial inspection was for many right-sided groups an evidence of the superficiality of the system transformation and an explanation of many of its imperfections. The political polarisation was further exacerbated after the Smoleńsk catastrophe of 10 April 2010. Next to the strongly emotional questions of the causes of the event, there was an increase of the number of discussions on the functioning and state of the country. The diagnosis of the political, economic and social reality of the Polish Third Republic became one of the main programme factors of the political parties before the 2005 elections. The Law and Justice party had come up with one of the most critical assessments of the Polish Third Republic. The political programme based on negating the large part of the achievements of the Polish Third Republic was the main reason of their victory in the elections. The opinion of the Polish Third Republic also divided a large part of the society. Without a critical judgement of the reality of the 2005 there would be no victory of the Law and Justice and Civic Platform – the parties that declare breaking up with the pathologies of the Polish country.

Opis:
The author reflects on the social divisions that — as sociologists have long predicted — can presently be observed in Poland. The author sees the source of the phenomenon in the mechanism of relative deprivation, which leads to disappointed expectations, or to people’s assessment of their own social or material situation as being worse in comparison to a reference group such as their contemporaries, neighbors, an elite, or a ruling class. Such a situation creates anger — here the author reaches for Sloterdijk’s concept — which is accumulated in “anger banks,” that is, in organizations or milieus that thrive on that anger. In the author’s opinion, this is the nature of the current Polish political scene. What is involved is the collective defense of individual and group dignity. The broad support accorded PiS (the Law and Justice party) in the 2015 elections should be analyzed in terms of the reacquisition of dignity by those who have been overlooked. However, the operating mode of the anger banks means that what previously occurred by omission and deafness is presently taking on the dangerous form of insulting and stigmatizing those who think differently. The author concludes that what is needed today, by all sides of the conflict, is a lesson in self-respect and respect for one’s opponents, the reconstruction of social relations within the community, and learning how to listen to and respect the opinion of adversaries.
