Opis:
French West Africa (AOF) created by a decree of the 16th of June 1895, one year after the establishment of the Ministry for the Colonies, a federation of colonies, is an entity for coordinating French presence in West Africa. Administrative grouping under French rule until 1958 of the former French territories of West Africa. According to the 1946 French Constitution, Africans in the colonies were allowed to elect parliamentary representatives in three assemblies: the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate, and the Assembly of French Union. Also, each colony had representation at lower levels, for instance the general councils with headquarters at Dakar for the AOF, and the governor general as a high commissioner of the Republic. Each local council sent five representatives to the AOF. It is worth noting that for the elections, there were still two electoral lists and two categories of voters: one list for French citizens and another for the union citizens. Following the adoption of the new constitution, Africans became union citizens, rather than French subjects as they were before, but they were not yet unequivocally French citizens. The RDA, with its subsections at the level of each colony, was at first dedicated to the struggle for equality between France and the colonies, between the French citizens and the Africans who had not yet acquired that status. In 1944 seven Ivorian owners of crop export (coffee and cocoa) created an agricultural union, Syndicat Agricole Africain to defend their rights. Félix Houphouet-Boigny was the first chairperson of Syndicat Agricole Africain, he also became the first chairperson of Parti Démocratique de Côte d’Ivoire and of the transnational Rassemblement Démocratique Africain in 1946. Among other high-profile political positions, he held many ministerial positions in the French government from 1956 to 1959. At independence in 1960, Houphouet-Boigny became its first president.

The paper focuses on Solidarity, Solidarity…, a collective project made in 2005 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the worker’s movement. Thirteen novelettas demonstrate various approaches towards the so-called “Polish August” of 1980, ranging from “comemorational”, praising the leaders of the movement, to critical, stimulating new interpretations of Polish history. The theoretical foundation of the analysis is built upon Deleuze’s theory of “time-image”. Although it may be argued that Deleuze’s work deals primarily with film style and the historically shifting aesthetics of the cinema, it is also justifiable to state that (if treated metaphorically) the Deleuzean “Time-Image” is based on the concept of a journey into the realms of the Forgotten, whereas its spectator is forced to rework his position in the field of history. In the paper, special attention is given to episodes which deal with the nature of history in a specific way. In Jacek Bromski’s short story, a former dissident asks his oppressor for a loan, leading to a replay of his interrogation. In Robert Glinski’s short story, Japanese tourists take pictures of the deserted Gdynia shipyard where Solidarity began. In Juliusz Machulski’s novelette, Solidarity never happened, so the director ponders making a movie about the heroic Battle of Lenino. These short films trace the inability to cope with the heritage of Solidarity, which became a deserted space in public debate during the course of its demolition and reconstruction.

Drawing empirically on the examples of the Church of Latter-Day Saints’ (Mormon) participation in anti-ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) ratification campaign and its latest attempts to influence other political issues of moral consequences (such as same-sex marriage) in the United States, the paper attempts to analyse the dynamics of a contemporary religiously motivated political movement.Despite being, on any of these issues, a part of a wider coalition of political actors, the Mormon church displayed a specifically religious motivation, justification and modus operandi. Owing to strong religious legitimacy of their power – based on the doctrine of continuous revelation and enhanced by a sort of “personality cult” of the Church President-Prophet developing in late 20th century – the leadership of the church has been capable of effective grassroots mobilization, achieved through a disciplined universal priesthood structure. While, from the theoretical point of view, this Mormon political movement is of a traditional, “old” variation (ideological and social cohesion of members, well-defined, stable membership, hierarchical leadership etc.) it has nevertheless been relatively successful in modern political environment. The Mormon engagement, at least in the anti-ERA campaign, had made a difference certainly in Utah, and probably elsewhere as well.

Opis:
Abstract: The protest movements associated with the far right have functioned in Germany for many years. However, none of them has gained such publicity and support as anti-Islam PEGIDA . This protest movement, by its unconventional, but usually peaceful and legal protests concerning migration policy, integrated and mobilized thousands of dissatisfied Germans. It forced the political elites to react but also mobilized the PEGIDA opponents among German society. It revealed the large frustration and dissatisfaction of some of the citizens. It seems that deliberately exaggerated threat of Islamization of Germany and Europe is the pretext for the followers of PEGIDA to show, in a way typical for many political pro test movement, their anti-establishment views, their dissatisfaction with traditional ways of the German policy, with alienation of political elites, with arrogance of the authorities. In the programme and activity of PEGIDA , there is strongly present the populist distinction between “us”, that is the normal people and “them”, i.e. the representatives of elites who are detached from reality. The goal is to change the model of German democracy towards direct democracy in order to make the citizens’ voice more important than that of the elites.
Ruchy protestu związane ze skrajną prawicą działają w Niemczech na przestrzeni wielu lat. Jednak żaden nie zyskał takiego rozgłosu i poparcia jak antyislamska PEGIDA. Ten ruch protestu przez swoje niekonwencjonalne, lecz z reguły pokojowe i legalne protesty dotyczące polityki migracyjnej zintegrował i zmobilizował wiele tysięcy niezadowolonych Niemców. Zmusił też do reakcji elity polityczne oraz zmobilizował przeciwników PEGIDY wśród społeczeństwa niemieckiego. Pokazał dużą frustrację i niezadowolenie części obywateli.

Opis:
Uzbekistan, so as other Central Asian Republics, turned into turbulent times in the beginning of 1990’s. After collapsing USSR, 5 Republics gained its independence. The whole region was very well-known from its religiosity. However, besides the fact that Islamist movements and parties were banned on any political activity and had no right to act as an opposition within the system of Uzbekistan, they have emerged subsequently especiallly in this country. The modern history of Uzbekistan is full of radical Islamic political and social movements. From the very beginning of the Republic, Islam Karimov, its first and the only one till now president, rules though and solidly. He was the biggest opponent of any Islamic initiative which showed up and tried to damp it down immediately. The aim of this study is to explore all the Islamist parties and movements which have been raised in Uzbekistan between 1990 and 2012. Which of them were and still remaining crucial and have the impact on Uzbek political and social life. The Author is trying to investigate the reasons and circumstances that led Islamist movements to arise and effectively influence on Uzbekistan political arena.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at showing the reconstruction process of the Polish Christian Democratic movement and the decline of the Polish People’s Republic (1988–1989). The issue in question has not been previously studied by many researchers. They have usually focused on the history of the Stronnictwo Pracy, social Catholicism, the activity of various lay Catholic circles (usually licensed ones), and the structure of the Labour Party (Stronnictwo Pracy) among the emigrants. What is more, it should be stressed that most of such analyses dealt with the period between 1944/45 and 1956, and in rarer cases, the decades of Władysław Gomułka’s and Edward Gierek’s rule. The 1980s (particularly the late portion of the decade) still require detailed research. In a way, the present article consists of two parts. The former one synthetically presents attempts at reactivation of the Christian Democratic circles after October 1956 and initiatives aiming at the reconstruction of Christian Democratic circles. This led to the establishment of the Polish Catholic Social Union (PZKS), which the initiators (mainly Janusz Zabłocki) intended to provide as a foundation for the reconstruction of the Polish Christian Democratic movement. The author has presented the main directions of PZKS activity, internal disputes (in the fields of ideology, politics and tactics) and the achievement of the party with regard to broadly understood political thought. The latter part of the article, which should be regarded as the main (fundamental) one, analyses the reconstruction process of the Polish Christian Democratic circles itself. The activities of the Christian Democratic Club of Political Thought, which was supposed to provide infrastructure for the future Christian Democratic movement (with regard to programme, politics and organisation). The focus is also on the political thought of the Club, its achievements in the field of programme and strategy related to the political changes in the country (e.g. the Round Table talks, June elections of 1989). What was equally important was the relationship between the Club and other opposition circles and licensed groups of lay Catholics (e.g. PZKS, PAX Association, Christian Social Association). The article has been based primarily on source materials of various provenance. The role of academic studies has only been auxiliary.

The article highlights the history of the origin and activities of various political parties in Kazakhstan that came to the political arena in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On the basis of archival documents and other sources, the program provisions, goals and objectives of their activities have been studied. The article describes and analyzes the composition of the participants in political parties and movement. The forms, methods of struggle are described, the reasons and conditions for the emergence of political parties and movements that existed at that time are analyzed. Also important in the political life of Kazakhstan at the beginning of the twentieth century, the history of the origin and activities of the national party ‘Alash’. The article devotes a special place to political exiles who deserve an assessment of their tireless activity, who, despite the strict and secret surveillance of the gendarmerie, continued the struggle against the tsarist autocracy. The political exiles of the beginning of the 20th century, who found themselves in a foreign land in captivity and cut off from their own living environment, already in the new conditions are organized into political unions and continue to fight

The article is an attempt at multi-faceted presentation of the underlying causes of the internal conflict within the PAX Association, which in 1955 led to a split with serious consequences. The first part focuses on the origins of the group which would leave PAX. The second part is and analysis of the process of internal decomposition of the PAX Association, which led the so-called Fronde to leave its ranks. The text discusses both the basic causes of the conflict, and its internal course, seen from the both sides.
