This brief information provides a description of a retrospective online database of newspapers, daily publications and official bulletins and publications available at Poznań University Library. The database of newspapers published in the Polish language encompasses publications from the interwar period, i.e. the years 1918-1939. The list has been prepared from personal inspection.

In the article the Taken Lands were presented from the perspective of literature reviewed in the Literature Section of “Kraj” newspaper and the first issues of Literature Review of “Kraj” newspaper published in years 1883-1886. In the article are presented scientific books, fictional literature, and the biographies of writers living in these lands. Additionally these works are reviewed and graded. A total of ten books on the subject of lands taken away were discussed and two biographical notes were included.

Biblioteka Polska (Budapest June 1941–March 1944) was created and managed by Maria Jankowska (real name: Wanda Pełczyńska) to reform all previous chaotic publishing activity of the Polish exiles. Biblioteka was the only publisher having its precise programme (preferences for literary books) and caring about the level of publications. Under the imprint of Biblioteka Polska in desktop publishing appeared 52 books and brochures (25% of total Polish books production in wartime Hungary), 2 yearbooks-almanacks and one magazine for children. The invasion of German troops on Hungary on 19th March 1944 put an end to the publishing house

The article presents the broad relationship between Zygmunt Haupt and books, based on source materials from the Zygmut Haupt Papers collection at Special Collections, Stanford University Library in California. Zygmunt Haupt (1907-1975) was a Polish émigré writer and painter, who was published in the leading Polish émigré publications, such as „Culture” in Paris, „Wiadomości” in London, and „Tematy” in New York. He was a recipient of the Culture Award in 1962 and the Kościelski Foundation Award in 1971, but was not published in Poland during his lifetime. The author presents Z. Haupt as an author; a translator; a promoter of books not available to Polish readers at that time, on the waves of the Voice of America and the US Information Agency; and finally, a reader. By keeping contact with leading figures of the Polish émigré - Jerzy Giedroyc and the team of the Literary Institute in Paris, Mieczysław Grydzewski, Zygmunt Hładki and Zdzisław Ruszkowski in London, Paweł Mayewski, Józef Wittlin and Aleksander Janta-Połczyński in New York - he had the opportunity to exchange information about books published in the USA and Poland, as well as their readings. His extensive correspondence with booksellers in Poland, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and the USA showcases his reading interests, as well as a rich collection of index cards with the titles he read, owned or ordered from booksellers abroad and in the USA.

This article attempts to determine the degree of bias in Polish general-information newspapers (“Gazeta Polska Codziennie”, “Nasz Dziennik”, “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita”), based on selected determinants. The ritual as a series of actions specified by traditions or a given political system, defined in detail and repeatable, was also fulfilled in the communist system. There it was aimed at introducing and amalgamating the order imposed on Poland by the Soviets after WWII. It could only be achieved by strictly observing the rules of Socialist rites. And that did not only apply to, however important, the celebrations of holidays according to the communist calendar, but also to the master principles which the enforcers of the new order used towards society. The indicated research material, extracted from censorship archives, shows that regardless of the changing media policy in the first decade after WWII, from the very beginning there existed invariable rules which constituted a compass for specific choices: the ban on criticising or disturbing the good name of the authorities, starting with Generalissimo Stalin, through the leaders of the states subordinate to him, higher-ranking officials, police and the army, to udarniks. The Control Bureau for Press, Publications and Performances was one of the most active bodies in the field. In the privacy of their offices, without the publicity so common for the clamorous ceremonies and rallies, censors worked to maintain the Stalinist rituals.

The question of inventiveness among the Polish diaspora in the US untill now has not become a subject of comprehensive study. This important area of human activity being omitted is a substantial weakness in a diagnosis of Poles’ contribution to the development of civilization of the United States of America. It appears that the daily press is an important primary source of an inventive output for the study. The contents’ analysis of the most important Polish Diaspora papers indicates that a lot of space was dedicated to innovation and technological progress. The author of the article brings up a number of examples of technical achievements and argues that Polish diaspora in the US has been keenly interested in the inventiveness and technological progress and has appreciated its significance. The article also discusses attempts to organize inventive movement of Poles in the US. The author also points out that the Polish diaspora regards inventiveness and innovative entrepreneurship as elements of social and economic emancipation of the Polish diaspora.

This study is devoted to the titles of newspapers and magazines published in Polish in the USSR in 1918–1939. These periodicals are a reflection of a unique period – they were issued during the first decades after the 1917 revolution, under the conditions of state monopoly on information. The titles of newspapers and magazines had to conform to the single party line and ideology enforced in the USSR. The vocabulary used in the titles under scrutiny is discussed in the context of the features of Russian political propaganda at the time, as well as those of the Polish-language propaganda created on its basis.
Przedmiotem badania są tytuły gazet i czasopism publikowanych w języku polskim w latach 1918–1939 na terenie ZSRR. Periodyki te stanowią świadectwo szczególnej epoki – ukazywały się w pierwszych dekadach po rewolucji 1917 roku w warunkach państwowego monopolu informacyjnego. Tytuły gazet i czasopism zostały dostosowane do jednej linii politycznej i ideologicznej obowiązującej w ZSRR. Słownictwo wykorzystane w badanych tytułach prasowych zostało omówione na tle właściwości ówczesnej rosyjskiej propagandy politycznej i kształtującej się na jej wzór propagandy polskojęzycznej.

W artykule analizowane są nominalne oraz atrybutywno-nominalne formy adresatywne występujące w tekstach gazet polskojęzycznych wydawanych w Ukrainie w XX wieku. Materiał badawczy dotyczy adresatywów swoistych pod względem formy lub funkcji na tle normy ogólnopolskiej. Omówiono przyczyny ich powstawania w warunkach kontaktów językowo-kulturowych oraz ich osobliwości funkcjonalno-pragmatyczne w polszczyźnie w Ukrainie. Za pomocą kulturalnojęzykowych kryteriów oceny środków językowych ustala się (uwzględniając również szerszy od prasowego materiał badawczy) skalę akceptowalności analizowanych form adresatywnych w polonocentrycznej wspólnocie komunikacyjnej w Ukrainie.
This article analyses the nominal as well as attributive and nominal forms of address found in Polish-language newspapers released in Ukraine in the 20th century. The research material concerns the forms of address the structures or functions of which are specific compared to the Polish standard. The discussion focuses on the causes of their formation in the circumstances of language and cultural contacts and their functional and pragmatic peculiarities in the Polish language in Ukraine. The scale of the acceptability of the analysed forms of address in the Polishcentric communication community in Ukraine is identified by means of cultural and linguistic criteria for the evaluation of linguistic devices (while taking into consideration also a more extensive research material than the one found in newspapers).
