Moses in Polish literature
Opis:
Max Donchin’s drama on Moses is one of the few literary implementations of the biblical figure in the Young Poland. The author took the matter of the Bible very freely, especially by selectively choosing numerous facts from the biography of Moses known from the Torah. Superficial, arranged according to the key political and historical scenes from the life of the Patriarch, completely overshot the biblical theology of communication. As a result, this does not bring the drama of careful observation and artistic penetration: Who was the contemporary myself and for whom Moses was the author of the modern drama. With his hastily running fairly fast paced action scenes, Moses emerges from a few of the characteristic forms, but not in any deep-dimensional features: careerist court, a guardian of the oppressed, a politician, a legislator and a teacher of the nation, with his mission, a tired, old man.

She also presents the translators – both experienced and often recognised and awarded doyens of Polish studies in China, and those from the intermediate and youngest generations to whom the oldest ones passed the knowledge, skills, passion and the sense of common mission of building cross-cultural dialogue through literature.

Jews in Polish Literature

Opis:
My aim is to contextualise and reflect on the ambivalences of Gombrowicz’s view of the interwar Polish Jews both in his satirical short story The Brief Memoir of Jakób Czarniecki (1933), focused on the mechanisms of the exclusion of Jews from the Polish society, as well in his later controversial declarations in The Diary and in Polish Memories. During the interwar period, assimilated Jews represented a significant part of Polish cultural life: Gombrowicz’s colleagues, reviewers, readers, friends, and his publisher were Jews. The Polish writer was linked with the assimilated creative intelligentsia by a dynamic of enchantment and disenchantment: on the one hand, he observed its typical neurosis of mimicking the Gentiles; on the other hand, he esteemed Jews’ open-mindedness and creativity, considering them as potential allies in this fight against the Polish Form. My hypothesis is that deep penetration of Jewishness into 20th-century Polish culture and society offered Gombrowicz some living models not only for Czarniecki’s story but also for his philosophy of Form.

The paper presents a voice in the discussion on blaming the writer for orientalization of the USSR, i.e., purposeful presenting the Union in a pathologic, unbalanced way in order to enhance the status of the West, including Poland. This accusation, however, loses its strength when one juxtaposes the image of the USSR (as presented in The Empire) with the image of Poland in the 50s and 60s in the twentieth century which appears in the volume of domestic reportages entitled The Polish Bush. Kapuściński’s motherland is also presented as a country of fatalism, stagnation, superficiality of experience, lack of morality and sensitivity amongst the residents. If one finds it necessary to speak about „orientalization”, he/she should make a similar accusation against The Polish Bush or admit that the image described by the author shows only one aspect of the eastern empire. The aspect which is controlled by the ideology homo sovieticus. Closer analysis of Heban’s author’s text proves, however, that there is also the other, „different” Russia which has preserved in the USSR. It is the country when one can meet true Russians - open-minded, friendly, and ready to bear responsibility for Other, Different people.

The article Memories sung in words — singers' autobiographies aims at identifying main topics and patterns present in autobiographical writings of classical singers. Discovering of vocal talent and musicality, desire to become a singer, role of voice teachers and men-tors (conductors, stage directors etc.), highlights of the career, fears and failures, vocal crises, dealing with criticism and negative judgements, daily routines aimed on vocal fitness, balancing private and professional life, cultural and historical background — all these aspects are discussed here on two remarkable examples: ... und ich wäre so gern Primadonna gewesen. Erinnerungen (Berlin 1994, English: In My Own Voice. Memoirs. New York 2009) by Christa Ludwig, one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of postwar opera, and Zeit eines Lebens. Auf Fährtensuche (Stuttgart 2000) by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of the most famous Lieder performers, often called in Germany ‘the voice of the 20th cen-tury’. Verbalizing the universe of their artistic and life experience they both express the essence of being a classical singer: ‘The singing profession is slavery! It only looks easy and enviable from the outside. You are showered with bravas and blossoms [...], but from the beginning the sword of Damocles always hangs over your head. After a certain age you no longer have the ease, and your voice is no longer as radiant. Indeed, you must stop singing just at the time when you finally know what singing is all about’ (Christa Ludwig, In My Own Voice. Memoirs).

Opis:
The interest of Polish scholars in literary works written in Ruthenian or in Polish language in the borderlands of the Commonwealth varied in different periods. By the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 1930s, Poland was rather focused on the construction of her new national state and the accentuation of her civilizational mission towards Eastern Slavic literature. After World War II, the new borders of the Polish state under Communist rule directed the attention of Polish scholars and cultural dealers toward a new national conception, whose goal was to eradicate the memory of the Commonwealth and to canalize the intellectual efforts towards “truly” Polish heritage, anti-German antagonism and politically correct ideologies. However, some groundbreaking works were written in the 1960s. Radical changes appeared after 1989. Publications multiplied exponentially in the 1990s and 2000s. Post-colonial studies emerged. In Polish scholarship and culture, two main trends may be indicated: on the one hand, the need to analyze the cultural, linguistic and literary specificities of the borderlands of Ukraine and Belarus in the Lithuanian Grand principality and in the Crown territories; on the other, the need to consider in a systemic approach all the components (Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, Jewish, German) of society and culture of the Rzeczpospolita. The article focuses on the most interesting trends and publications of the periods indicated above.

Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

Opis:
This essay examines Italian translations of three Polish novels for young adults, written and set in communist Poland of the 1960s. The analysis focuses on the problems related to the translation of the culture-specific elements of Polish reality in that historical period, almost completely unknown to the young readers in Italy. An in-depth contrastive study of the strategies applied by the translators takes into consideration different channels of the transfer from the source text to the target text. Ożogowska’s translation has been made directly from Polish by an Italian native speaker, Domagalik’s novel is a secondhand translation from German, and Jurgielewicz’s book has been translated into Italian twice: firstly by a tandem of a native Polish speaker and an Italian author of children’s books and later by a native Polish speaker without extensive translational practice. The comparison between the texts brings forward the importance of extratextual factors in the process of translation.

Popular culture, now being a medium of social dialogue, has stopped being perceived as a register of “lower” existential experiences, and its creations became the testament not of a cultural degradation, but of creativity of its authors, who seek fiction clichés which offer a new look at the deeply rooted social phenomena. Thus, if it is done with inertia and awkwardness typical for the subject, its potential of “explaining the world” should not be underestimated.

“Polish literature of the Holocaust”
Opis:
The text is a critical attempt discussing the compendium Literatura polska wobec Zagłady, (“Polish Literature in the Face of the Holocaust”) edited and published by three prominent scholarly experts on the subject: Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska and Jacek Leociak. This is the first of the three volumes of the series Reprezentacje Zagłady w kulturze polskiej (“Representations of the Holocaust in Polish Culture”) – an endeavour which is imposing already in its first instalment concerning the years 1939-1968. The time frame of the abovementioned volume is marked by the date of the beginning of World War II (1939), resulting in the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe, and a “dry pogrom”, that is was the anti-Semitic campaign in Poland in 1968 (the campaign itself and its writings shall be examined in the following volume). A comprehensive and very carefully prepared monograph has been divided into two fundamental parts: concerning the literature reacting to the Holocaust conducted by Nazi Germany during the war (1939-1945) and discussing the literary echoes of that genocide in the years 1945-1968. The study and invaluable interpretational effort have been focused on personal document literature (Marta Janczewska, Jacek Leociak), the prose (Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska), the poetry (Piotr Matywiecki) and the press (Ewa Koźmińska-Frejlak). A separate chapter has been devoted to a the “global text”, i.e., Archiwum Ringelbluma (“Ringelblum’s Archives”). Highly appreciating the entire volume as well as its individual fragments, recalling fundamental considerations and the ones concerning details, finally, proposing small corrections and pointing to minor shortcomings, the author of the critical review suggests the use of the formula “Polish literature of the Holocaust” (analogous to the formula coined by Grzegorz Niziołek “Polish theatre of the Holocaust”) as the one principally necessary to be contrasted with the formula “Polish literature of war and occupation”.

The author of the article discusses in a chronological order the literature on Iceland written in Polish starting from the seventeenth-century account of the journey to the island by Daniel Vetter. Most attention is devoted to the accounts created in the second half of the twentieth (reports by Lucjan Wolanowski and Polish sailors) and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Recent publications are largely based on blog experiences. In quantitative as well as qualitative terms, we observe the perspective of changing the geographical and cultural imagination of Polish literature at the beginning of the 21st century: within the North-South axis one can notice the recently emerging diagonal axis linking Poland with Iceland. It is worth examining this issue in more detail in a while.

Julije Benešć’s correspondence with Polish scholars, people of culture, writers, and numerous acquaintances and friends began in his school years and lasted until his death. A large collection of letters and postcards sent to him by Poles has been collected in the HAZU library in Zagreb, but unfortunately it has not yet been put in order, and some items have been lost. The materials in the collection were only collected in the form of a list prepared by Ivan Meden in 1978. This text presents letters from Maria Kuncewiczowa, which provide information about the relations of Polish writers with the Croatian popularizer of their works and about the writer’s perception of the Polish literary scene in the years 1920s.

Opis:
The article Are There Monsters in Dorota Wieczorek’s Strachopolis? analyzes selected elements of the topos of fear in the aponymous IBBY-awarded children’s novel. The author is interested in the contemporary version of the topoi of fear embedded in the landscape of globalized existence affected by the phenomenon of supermarketization and consumerism. In the article, the topic of fear highlighted by Wieczorek, is reinterpreted through the prism of a number of sociological theories, notably, Marc Augé’s concept of non-places, Zygmunt Bauman’s postmodern construct of “liquid life”, and Jeffrey J. Cohen’s cultural theory of monster. In Wieczorek’s novel, “monster” is a social metaphor for the excluded whom Bauman has called homo sacer. Their societal degradation in the fairy-tale futuristic metropolis is conditioned upon the post-panopticon power, exercised as persecution of the “Other’s” ethnic and gender identity. The excluded are thus outsiders, if not the discarded “social pariahs”. Besides presenting the sociological and cultural theme of the monstrum, the article further discusses the strategy of carnivalization put forward by Bachtin. This shift leads to the victory of the Others-Monsters as subjects within the liquid modernity. It makes the novel intriguing both on the textual and didactic plane.

The text outlines Poland’s authority from a political and cultural point of view, by focusing on the reception of Polish literature in one of Bulgaria’s most popular (and until recently, only one remaining) literary weekly, “Literaturen vestnik”. As well as offering western ideas, it also filled certain gaps by providing translations of some great Western authors, “Litera-turen vestnik” pays due attention to the developments in Central Europe, and presents the creativity of Zbigniew Herbert, Czesław Miłosz, Ryszard Kapuściński, Olga Tokarczuk, Ryszard Krynicki, Ewa Lipska, Wisława Szymborska, Andrzej Stasiuk, Magdalena Tulli. The text also gives an account of the Polish¬ themed issues of “Literaturen vestnik”, dedicated to some of the above¬ mentioned authors, as well as to feminism, the Polish NIKE literary award, the Conrad Festival in Cracow and the formation of a Polish community among Bulgarian translators and readers.

While listing such examples, the author considers the possibility of interpreting such works and placing them in the discourse of world literature.

The present study falls within the scope of research dedicated to external history of literary translation and applies the framework designed by Gideon Toury (1995/2012), which has a historical, empirical, descriptive and explanatory character. It reconstructs preliminary norms in direct Polish‑European Portuguese literary translation in the period between 1985 and 2010, by investigating (1) the nature of translation policy in Portugal concerning Polish literature, and (2) the reasons for choosing a direct translation of Polish literature into European Portuguese. Following the latest trends, special attention is given to the translators’ biography since translators are bridge‑builders between cultures.

These series (as well as „Collection of the Serbian Literature” and „Serbian-Russian Poetic Library”) form integral part of the Slavonic library, which’s aim is to make united information-field and to resist primitivization of the whole-Slavonic cultural space. Research, artistic and enlightening activity of the Publishers is the element of constructive alternative in the epoch of aggressive chaotization of the world, serves for communication upon new-arisen prohibitions. Productive existence of this publishing utopia shows, on a level with large number of other facts, that in spite of onset of dehumanizing globalization, in spite of guided devaluation of culture texts - nowadays increases the tendency to form open community of Slavonic (and wider - East-European) cultures, which is not subjected to ethnic patterns, ideomyths, negative inertia. New times could become the stage of really friendly contacts between the peoples - without pauses, conceals and distortions, the stage of continually coming news about things which are important and lasting, not artificially played up, marginal and ephemeral, about those true things which can help to consolidation - not frittering away.

The basis of the author’s deliberations is the collection of articles written by the students and supporters of professor Andrzej Walicki ideas who is considered to be the best Polish slavist and who is widely known abroad. The collection of articles About Andrzej Walicki. Almanach of Russian thoughts was published under the auspices of Warsaw University and edited by Janusz Dobieszewski, Jan Skoczyński, and Michał Bihun who are interested in Russian philosophical thoughts in this area and who have considerable achievements in this sphere. The author claims that people who deal with and are interested in Russia, its history, culture and especially historio-philosophical thoughts, should be familiar with the articles published in this collection. It should be underlined that in Walicki’s interests and scientific research and as well in the writings of this advocate of Russian thoughts, Russian dominant is very clear and Jan Sobczak undertook the reconstruction of his views on stalinism and roots of Russian totalitarism, on the origins of Russian bolshevism. Moreover, Jan Sobczak pointed that Walicki’s ideas and thoughts are present in the contemporary Polish discourse on the subject of not only Polish -Russian connections but also the assessment of PRL and abusing such concepts as communists postcomunists, etc. or assessment of martial law, an attitude to Solidarność, etc. Walicki’s perception of Polish position in Europe depicts his characteristic statement: „Poland stands a better chance as west of east than periphery of west. [...] Russians are the only nation for which polish culture is significant, where the name of Mickiewicz is widely known. It is our cultural, spiritual capital that should be care for”. Since 1956 Polish system has been far away from standards of totalitarianism. In fact, that time Poland has become distant from the totalitarian model. Walicki has always criticized Polish foreign politics when it started to be defeated by different nationalist phobias.

The main reason of this particular interests was the resemblance of Polish and Russian emigrants fate.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 60 (2012), issue 1. This essay proposes a synthesis of the major themes and issues of Polish Dantism, with a particular reference to the 20th century and beyond. The author retraces the traditional motifs which connect 20th-century authors to the Romantic tradition, and discusses some examples (Gombrowicz, Vincenz, Miłosz) in a broader comparative context (referring specifically to Eliot, Mandelstam, Brodsky). The author argues that the Modernist ethical idea of “necessary Dante” tends to be gradually replaced by a Postmodernist notion of “aesthetic Dante,” with a flowering of new translations—not only of the Divina Commedia. These works restore a balance between Polish literary Dantism and Dante studies. In this sense, the Polish situation displays a lot of similarity to the European and international context, abundant with trends and concerns which go far beyond those of a national language and literature.

Artykuł omawia dzieła popularyzujące teksty biblijne, opisuje ich rolę i miejsce, jakie odegrały w rozwoju biblistyki polskiej. Na podstawie przytoczonych przykładów można wysnuć wniosek, ze powojenny ruch biblijny, mimo antykościelnej polityki państwa, rozwijał się na szeroką skalę, dostarczając wiernym coraz to nowszych przekładów i opracowań biblijnych. Były wśród nich encykliki, introdukcje, synopsy ewangeliczne, konkordancje, komentarze do poszczególnych ksiąg Pisma św., opracowania monograficzne, encyklopedie i słowniki biblijne oraz atlas biblijny. Ważnymi elementami działalności popularyzatorskiej były również: publicystyka biblijna, opracowania popularnonaukowe oraz literatura piękna oparta na motywach biblijnych.
The article discusses works popularising biblical texts and describes their role and place in the development of Polish biblical studies. On the basis of the examples cited, it can be concluded that the post-war biblical movement, despite the anti-church policy of the state, developed on a large scale, providing the faithful with ever newer biblical translations and studies. These included encyclicals, introductions, evangelical synopses, concordances, commentaries on individual books of Scripture, monogrphic studies, biblical encyclopaedias and dictionaries, and a biblical atlas. Biblical journalism, popular science studies and fiction based on biblical themes were also an important part of the popularisation activities.

Ludwik Bohdan Grzeniewski (1930–2008) was Polish essayist, poet, critic and novelist. He was born and died in Warsaw, where he spent all his life. Well known as varsavianist, he was also master of literary miniature. It is not a literary genre in the strict sense. “Literary miniature”, coherent artistic statement, as short as possible, combines elements of poem, essay, short narrative and others. Grzeniewski always highly valued precision, he preferred condensed form of expression. I therefore think, that the books of this writer (Igły w stogu siana, “Drobiazgów duch, wspaniały i powietrzny…”, Taniec z mufką and others) deserve attention.

The article is an attempt of analysis and interpretation of the “Young Poland“ comedy written by Włodzimierz Perzyński in psychopathological or psychoanalytical perspective. The author draws reader’s attention to artistic achievements of Włodzimierz Perzyński who was a Polish novelist, comedy writer, columnist and poet, satirist and ironist and he died eighty years ago. The article is informally built out of two parts: Michel Foucault’s cultural criticism is a context of the first part, in the second one the author uses general psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud and Karen Horney. A neurotic personality, neurotic disturbances in the relations between people and activities of individuals in the different social situations are an object of analysis and interpretation. The author discussing one of the most famous Perzyński’s comedies tries to show that the Polish writer’s plays are interesting and opening a lot of perspectives of interpretation.

The author analyzes the contribution of the Romanian Polonists to studying Polish literature on the basis of theories and methodologies that are characteristic of comparative studies, developed within the Romanian area (T. Vianu, Al. Dima, G. Calinescu, N. Manolescu). Thanks to the comparative method, Romanian specialists have extended their interpreting perspective by voicing original ideas on motifs, themes, influences, parallelisms etc. that are present in the works of Polish and Romanian writers. Special attention has been granted to comparative studies about Mickiewicz – Asachi, Sienkiewicz – Sadoveanu, Reymont – Re-breanu. In conclusion, the comparative method becomes a basic tool in the critical approach of foreign Polonists.

Opis:
The history of translating Polish literature in South Korea goes almost 100 years back. In the article Polish literary works translated into Korean have been presented in chronological order. The first Polish literary work offered to Korean readers was Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It was translated from Japanese into Korean language in 1916. Since then Kore-an translators have been presenting Polish literature to their compatriots almost constantly and in many different ways. This also applies to the very difficult moments in the history of Korea such as Japanese occupation (1910–1940) or so called „cold war” period. Around 70 works of Polish literature have been published in Korea so far (not mentioning re¬ editions and several different translations of the same work). Some works have been published several times, translated by different people and published by different publishing houses (for example Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, Eighth day of a week by Marek Hłasko, Solaris by Stanisław Lem).

Opis:
Polish woman‑centered symbolism has a specific dimension, which is depicted in the iconic ‘Polish Mother’ (Matka Polka). The iconic image is deeply rooted in Polish history and culture and it often refers to the mother of Jesus as she is expected to sacrifice her children for the motherland. As a woman, she realizes herself not only through motherhood but also in the service of her nation, and as such, she becomes a highly charged metaphor for both motherly love and patriotism. The ‘Polish Mother’ is a myth; a stereotype that has shaped the thinking of the nation for more than two centuries and is still largely in force. In contemporary literature (and also in various media texts and blogs) one can identify however, obvious attempts to re‑evaluate this very traditional iconic image. Especially motherhood, in Poland today, has gained a new dimension. I investigate some of the most characteristic aspects of the selected texts, focusing on the discrepancy between the old clichés and expectations and the subversion of traditionally defined motherhood in a modern society, which no longer takes the ‘Polish Mother’ at face value.

The translator of poetry should “think for poetry”, paraphrasing the title of Leibowitz’s book about transcription Thinking for orchestra.

The Polish-studies output of Václav Burian, an ambassador of Polish culture in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, scattered in magazines such as „Ječmínek”, „Hanácké noviny”, „Scriptum”, „Listy” or „Literární noviny”, has been gathered by Jan Jeništa and Anna Militz in a volume entitled Budoucím čtenářům starých novin (For future readers of old newspapers). Their selection of essays from between 1981 and 2014 is an excellent illustration of Václav Burian’s work. The sheer diversity of articles Burian left behind was unquestionably a challenge for the editors. They have stood up to that challenge – it has to be emphasised – outstandingly. They divided the selected texts by subject into three chapters titled: Witness of History (Svědkem Historie), Travel reports (Zprávy z cest) and Literature’s reader (Čtenář literatury). The first covers key events in Poland in the 1980’s. The second consists of Burian’s notes from trips to Poland in 1993 and 1995. The third one collects the most important Burian’s texts about Polish literature. Those three chapters reflect the three areas of Burian’s interest, through which he presented Poland to Czech readers.

The article is devoted to Bruno Schulz’s meetings with musicians. It shows not only a partial biography of the author of The Cinnamon Shops, filtered by these encounters, but also smaller fragments of lives of his friends. These intersected biographies create a story about inter-war contacts and relationships, which resulted in numerous epistolography and post-war memories that focused on Schulz’s life and oeuvre. The author of this text talks about the influence that these contacts might have had on Schulz’s perception of music and musicians. Furthermore, it shows how he translated these experiences into his prose. In the archive of Schulz’s life and work we can find traces of meetings with several music artists. There are also some traces of these meetings in the descriptions of organ grinders at Sanatorium Under The Sign of The Hourglass, Jewish musicians who we will find concerts in the story Spring, as well as in the descriptions of park and cafe musicians, mentioned in both series of stories. However, knowledge of these relationships survived primarily due to the letters. It should be noted that the preserved materials from his meetings with musicians have never been the subject of schulzology research in its entirety. Musicians inspired a few fragments of Schulz’s short stories. Artists whom he met at the beginning of the 20th century were not only performers of pre-war Poland, in particular his hometown of Drohobych, and Lviv, Warsaw, but also of Vienna and Paris. These friendships were important for his musical education, they shaped his thinking about music and his image of musicians. They must have had an impact on the descriptions of sounds in the world depicted in The Cinnamon Shops and his other stories, and finally — after the Holocaust — they let the legacy of Bruno Schulz be saved.

The essay deals with the problem of the presence of women in music. In the history of the culture, art above all, women have traditionally constituted the object of artistic crea-tion, not the creator. Particularly valuable material for research may prove female auto-biographical writing. The selected works of Polish authors are analyzed through the categories of gender discourses. The paper is an attempt to show cultural changes asso-ciated with the feminine approach to musical creation. In the nineteenth century, we can talk about the formation of a kind of salon women's subculture. The turn of the modern-ist and the First World War mean the cultural advancement of women. We can talk about the expansion of women in the culture, and thus in the music. In analyzed memo-ries appear women practicing music only in the private sphere: the home or giving les-sons, even if some of them the ability to play an instrument is a passion. The autobio-graphical prose seem to confirm that women were determined to develop his artistic passion had to choose between art and family.

In the article, the author presents an interpretation of the novel Szpital Czerwonego Krzyża by Michał Choromański. One of the key interpretative hypothesis advanced by the author of the article based on a reading of the novel is the assumption that the work constitutes an important statement on masculinity and disability, exposing the artificiality and unoriginality of masculine gender roles and criticizing somatic culture. This criticism is, in turn, significant with regard to twentieth-century reflections on body issues in post-war modernity. The author of the article indicates that Choromański’s work, written before the Second World War but published not until 1956, is a piece of significancefor the reconstruction of issues of disability in terms of Polish literary history.

The text is a review of the Dariusz Śnieżko’s book Kompleksja literatury. Studia staropolskie (The Complexion of Literature. Old-Polish Studies) (TAiWPN UNIVERSITAS, Krakow 2019). The only serious doubt regards the sound of the title (readers might not know the word “complexion”). Kompleksja literatury is a fascinating book. For whom? – certainly students of Old-Polish literature (and it will be also inspiring for scholars of the next historical and literary epochs). What? – revealing the most important dimensions of Old-Polish literature. Why? – because in works published so far the scant use of source texts proves to be representative of the most general material remaining of Old-Polish literature in its intertwining of anthropology and dialectics of orality and literacy.

This article discusses the strategies that may be used during the process of translation of a literary work. It will be shown that the translators’ choices are context driven. The starting point for an analysis are four theoretical approaches to translation strategies (Markovina 1993, Koller 2004, Gercken 1999 and Hejwowski 2006). The analysis of the translator’s choices will be carried out at the example of Andrzej Stasiuk’s novel “Jak zostałem pisarzem. Próba autobiografii intelektualnej” translated into German by Olaf Kühl.

The article discusses the usage of the classical topos Graeca fides to describe the citizens of the Grand Duchy of Moscow in early modern Polish literature (chronicles, diaries, journalistic writings, diplomatic reports etc.). This way of speaking was justified by the identification of the Eastern Orthodox Church with the Greek Byzantine Rite. The formula was used to deprecate Russians and became part of a negative stereotype. The author demonstrates, with diverse examples, how this formula became a constant topos in statements about a country considered hostile in Poland since the 16th century, and in which contexts it was developed.

Moreover, it is useful in unmasking the falsehood and reconciling antagonists. On the other hand, rhetoric is also shown as the “craft” which can serve vile, godless cells and which, “uncontrollable”, causes the disaster. Bielski’s Ćwiczenia... made young people aware, that acquaintance of rhetoric has a real influence on the outside world.

Miłosz’s volume Światło dzienne (Daylight, 1953) is conventionally read by critics as political poetry deeply engaged with history. The article offers a corrective to this traditional reading by interpreting the volume as interplay of European and American influences. As a European poet, Miłosz had experienced the violent demise of ideals at the foundation of the Old World. Światło dzienne is, therefore, at one level, an elegiac volume in which both persons and ideas are mourned. On the other hand, to the extent that America continues for Miłosz the noble ideas abandoned in Europe, he cannot accept what he regards as their misguided or perverse incarnations. This explains the emotional climate of the whole volume, with its dominant mood of disappointment, anger and refusal of reconciliation. Światło dzienne is American in its outlook in taking seriously America’s status as a superpower and its influence on the future direction of global history. It is anti-American, however, in identifying America’s perceived failures to live up to the post-war challenge for human civilization in general and the consequent dangers. The article intends to assess Miłosz’s debt to English-language poetry in this volume in light of his personal notes from his reading and translation work at the time.

Polish narrations about the Holocaust
Opis:
As far as the question of the Holocaust is concerned, the Polish culture is characterised by some peculiar feature. On the one hand, it embraces the texts which quite uncompromisingly describe the Polish role in extermination, noticing a continuum between collective discriminating behaviours of the non-Jewish part of the society and the exterminating activities of the Nazis. Such voices deconstruct narration, in which the Polish majority remains an isolated, bystanding and passive witness of the Holocaust, and demonstrate some forms of participation. On the other hand, the message of this kind does not permeate into social consciousness, does not become known and does not improve the knowledge of the society about itself. The studies of Protest by Zofia Kossak-Szczucka and Wielki Tydzień (“Holy Week”) by Jerzy Andrzejewski are used for the description of the mechanism of this “becoming acquainted”. A key role in this mechanism is played by preoccupation with self-image of the group. The Holocaust, to a certain degree, undermined the obviousness of Polish discriminating practices towards Jews. In the awareness of elites there appeared a premonition of other criteria of evaluation of Polish behaviours, going beyond the mentioned practices (a phantasm “eyes of the world”). In the light of such criteria, the attitude towards exterminated Jews proves to be discrediting. At the same time, there appear narrations whose aim is to restore the order of discrimination and the hierarchies connected with it, which comes down to forcing the victims into inferior position—in contrast to the dominating majority—and concealing the knowledge about participation in the crime. Consequently, culture remains in the state of unrest. Unwanted knowledge (and the feeling of guilt) returns and the attempts to become purified by the renewed concealment and repudiation of the awareness of evil always prove unsuccessful. The signs of repudiation are the recurring symptoms and repetitions of the same scenario of denial of never clearly stated accusations.

In Old Polish texts as well as in later works written in the Old Polish style (e.g. in the Trilogy by H. Sienkiewicz), the name bachmat was used to describe a horse of the Tatar breed, characterized by its small size but incredible endurance. An analogous term (бахматъ) can be found in the literature of Old Rus’. There is no doubt that it is an orientalism, which entered into both the Old Russsian language and – through it or independently – the Polish language and here from one of the Tatar dialects. Among the explanations for its etymology, the most interesting seems one connecting it with the term Бохмитъ, i.e., a variant of Muhammad’s name, characteristic for the literature of Old Rus’. The article aims to determine when the term бахматъ could have entered the literature of Old Rus’, how widespread it was, in what contexts it appeared, and whether it is possible to show a connection between the studied word and the East Slavic form of Muhammad’s name (Бохмитъ).

Historical-literary periodization
Opis:
This essay addresses issues of periodization, with a specific focus on the importance (or overvaluation) of the reconstruction of the Polish State and its effects and consequences on contemporary Polish culture and literature: in fact, 1918 was perceived as a turning point and as an ideal boundary between an old and a new era. At the same time, different opinions about the “limits of modernity” in Polish culture and literature were discussed, emphasizing the longue durée of such cultural macrophenomena as the “romantic paradigm” or “Sarmatian” mentality and their significant impacts on the processes of continuity and discontinuity of culture. Searching for a merely literary explanation for the periodization of this first troubled period of the “short century”, the author stresses the importance of two texts by Julian Tuwim, Spring (1918) and You All, Go Kiss My Ass (1938), which feature all the euphoria of the beginning and the drama of the end of the period. The article also offers an initial attempt at an Italian translation of the Tuwimian Poem in which the author politely but firmly implores the vast hosts of his brethren to kiss his ass.

The paper is to reconstruct the structure and presentation of the issues of Piotr Skarga’s sermons for giving thanks for victory in war. The Royal Preacher preached the following orations: after the victory of Byczyna by Jan Zamoyski in 1588 over Maximilian Habsburg (not printed); after the victory of The Army of John Charles Chodkiewicza of Kircholm over The Army of Charles, Prince of Sudermania in 1605; after the victory of Jan Zamoyski over the Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul) in 1600 and after the capture of Smolensk in 1611 by The Army of Sigismund III Vasa. Orations are made up of motto, exordium, narratio, propositio, argumentatio, part of instructive and conclusio. The paper presents the design of the title, brings the functions of motto; characterized has varied topics of introductions depending on the military situation. Posing the thesis, Skarga spoke about thanksgiving for God’s mercy, about the joy of victory, and regret over the death and suffering of soldiers, and finally about the benefits brought about by military victory. In narratio Skarga presented generally unfavorable circumstances associated with internal victory. The giving of proper thanks as arguments with the enumeration of gifts which received from God to the state and its citizens which Skarga put in argumentatio. He used the topic of exhortation, called to give thanks to God, the army and its commanders. Additionally, Skarga introduced the lecture containing a moral instruction. He condemned the attitude undesirable, calling for penance. In conclusio Skarga invited to worship the holy patrons: Stanislaus, Hedwig, and Wojciech. He expected to fund churches, set up monasteries as a form of thanksgiving. Skarga was reaching for The Bible not only in mottos, but also by building argumentatio. He compared the situation of human figures from Old Testament with the location of the commanders of the army and throughout the Commonwealth. He did not however, attribute the nobility of the state and their messianic role in history.

Piotr Skarga lived and wrote in a period when ars rhetorica had an enormous influence on reading habits and writing strategies. In the course of reading many later authors took notes in their so called commonplace books — quotations, systematically ordered, were later at hand and ready to use in their writings. Analysis of some parts of Skarga’s writings — i.e. repetitions of exempla and topoi — shows that he probably had his own commonplace book. The article examines a possibility of recreating its fragments and puts Skarga’s writings in the context of 16th/17th century popularity of printed and self-made compilations of commonplaces.

The article describes the motif of women and war in three novels by Sylwia Chutnik (born 1979): Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet (Pocket Atlas of Women) 2008, Dzidzia (Diddums) 2009 and Cwaniary (The Hustlers) 2012. Drawing from the context of modern Western studies, reflections on these works concern the relationship between gender and war, assuming that it grants an active and heroic role to men while putting women in the role of civilian victims, and in doing so, it consolidates the traditional social hierarchy. Even though the history of war contradicts such stereotypes and abounds in evidence of women’s courage, both as civilians and soldiers, the society – according to scholars – seems to reproduce wartime division of gender roles as justification for the cultural hierarchy of gender. This pushes women’s experience and memory of war to the margins of collective memory. Sylwia Chutnik portraits the women who participated in the Warsaw Uprising and depicts their lives after the war, rediscovering the (in)ability to build a women’s tradition of combat and to pass their wartime stories to daughters and granddaughters. She also shows the forgotten women’s memory of the Uprising: the terrible suffering of civilians, who often rebelled against military decisions. In her understanding, this memory forms an undertone in Polish culture, and has only recently been acknowledged by the so-called oral history.

Opis:
This article is a proposal for introducing into the theoretical reflection on literature the category of “poetics of vanishing” and a reflection on potential possibilities of its application in reading the 20th century literature. The promoted term is connected, on the one hand, with the hermeneutics of trace (in post-Derridian understanding) and, on the other hand, with the geography of senses, as it concerns the ways of textual descriptions of vanishing processes of sensual sensations, receding images, obliterating signs, softening sounds etc. The article analyzes the points of narrative observation and the figure of vanishing being components of melancholic poetics of description, whereas the material read in this way were texts of Andrzej Kuśniewicz, Andrzej Stasiuk and Wisława Szymborska.

“Traditional” or “Modern”? Methodological Dilemmas of the Contemporary Researchers of Old Polish Literature. Part One: General Remarks and the Case of Postcolonial CriticismThis paper shows the personal reflection of its authors upon the methodological contexts of cultural and literary studies concerning Old Polish literature. Especially those contexts that eagerly and sophisticatedly – though quite superficially – apply the so called “modern” literary theories to the analyses and interpretations of Old Polish texts and – at the same time – disregard their very historical backgrounds. The authors present a fairly sceptical approach towards the blind and unjustifiable, although fashionable, application of “modern” criticism in the given field of research. Instead they emphasise the contextual, secondary character of the possible modern theoretical implications, as  well as the particular, specific character of Old Polish writings. Moreover, wider social factors influencing the methodological decisions taken by the academic community in question (who undoubtedly still favour the traditional, philological method of research and strongly distances itself from the contemporary theoretical thought) have been discussed in great detail. The enclosed analysis of the recent controversial book Fantomowe ciało króla (The Phantom Body of a King, 2011) by Jan Sowa, which deals with the Old Polish history, society, and culture, strongly influenced by the application of modern criticism, in particular the postcolonial part of it, served both as an example of the authors’ argumentation and, at the same time, a warning.

Alternate history, the type of fiction which describes worlds in which history developed differently than in reality, is often depreciated as a subgenre of science–fiction. Yet Polish alternate history novels are in reality an interesting commentary on polish culture, history and memory. In this paper I present the subject–matter of Polish alternate history novels, their functions and their relevance to Polish culture. In the first part I describe the history of counterfactual thinking and historians’ attitude towards it. In the second part, I emphasize that there are two types of alternate history. I name them “non-fiction” and “fiction”. Next, I provide the definition of alternate history. In the third part of the article I describe functions of alternate history novels. These functions show clearly that they are not created for entertainment only. On the contrary, they comment on important features of Polish culture.

The article points out the strands connected with music and the musical life in Poland in Dzienniki by Stefan Kisielewski. Kisielewski has been writing his Dzienniki between 1968 and 1980. There are numerous references to the composers, musicians and musicologists contemporary to Stefan Kisielewski with the author’s opinions on them and their works. Kisielewski presents often very sharp, uncompromising and scathing views about the people mentioned in his diary. The literary genre of diary is personal and not destined to be published though not devoid of the elements of the literary creation. This is why Kisielewski could express here his opinions freely, without the fear of a censorship. The pages of Stefan Kisielewski’s diary testified also to his anxiety about his own com-positions’ artistic value. This is a fascinating evidence of his artistic process of composing and writing. The text underlines the fact that Dzienniki is a very illuminating book, with a great doc-umentary and factual value. It gives a true picture of the difficult artistic life in PRL in the 60s and 70s, under the domination of the communist ideology. Simultaneously this is an invaluable record of Stefan Kisielewski’s complex and colourful personality. The article depicts also the changes in Kisielewski’s views on music and his own artistic activity as time goes by.

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and his Russian colleague Sergey Lukyanenko are considered to be two best-known living science-fiction and fantasy authors from their countries at the turn of the century. What is more, their popularity is not only connected with their homeland, but also spreads to other countries. As we can observe, Lukyanenko is the most important living Russian modern SF&F author in Poland, whereas Sapkowski is one of the best-known Polish contemporary writers in Russia (not only SF&F, but in general - right after Lem and Chmielewska). It is interesting to take a close look at their popularity and reveal how their works connect and influence many different branches of culture in Poland and Russia. It is impossible to take into consideration all of their works, so we concentrate on Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga and Lukyanenko’s four urban fantasy novels about The Night Watch and The Day Watch. On this basis we present their influence on such cultural areas as film, comic books and computer games. We also describe the reception of this influence and its results in Poland and Russia.

An analysis of the source material made it possible to determine the functions of the borderlands theme in Szczerek’s works (demythologisation, deheroisation, confrontation). The paper also presents strategies of revising the pioneer myth of the so-called Regained Territories and of representing the Polish-German relations in Szczerek’s works of fiction and non- fiction.

Opis:
Giulia Kamińska Di Giannantonio in paper entitled Culinary motifs in the contemporary literature italian journeys proposes an analysis of descriptions of food, its preparation and eating, appearing in literature, especially in travelogues, reportages or personal documents. The author will analyse texts regarding Italy and Italian journeys written by Tessa Capponi-Borawska, Zbigniew Herbert, Jarosław Mikołajewski, Marek Zagańczyk and Dariusz Czaja. The purpose of this Chapter is to search the descriptions of examples of Italian cuisine in mentioned authors, and, next, to look and examine the narrative strategies therein. Describing and characterizing banqueting or feasting and eating meals and also introducing recipes of local dishes or foreign names of meals in the text is a very important element of contemporary travels’ reports. Its purpose is to bring closer the experience of journey to the reader and to create more attractive and more credible narration. As will be shown in this chapter, in Polish contemporary literature about Italy the culinary topic is being used in differents ways and with differents aims. Tessa Capponi-Borawska in Dziennik toskański (2004) focuses all the narration on the motive of italian cuisine. Jarosław Mikołajewski in his Terremoto (2017), a work of a syncretic genre, uses the culinary motifes to intensify the expression of his narration. Some authors, like Dariusz Czaja in Gdzieś dalej, gdzie indziej (2010), chose only one component of local gastronomy to describe, namely wine, to the exclusion of any other food types. Finally, some writers renounce absolutly mentioning food in their books in favour of the more sophisticated themes like literature, story or art (this strategy is typical for all italian books of Marek Zagańczyk).

At the beginning the research examines Dycki’s interest in the Baroque, because in this period Ruthenian (Ukrainian) motifs began to appear. The paper presents the theses on Eastern themes by Dycki, which were described by other researchers, to which the author referred and which he creatively developed. The article has stated that the theory of post-colonialism does not fully match the Polish-Ukrainian realities. In Dycki’s works we notice an attempt to build an idyll in Polish-Ukrainian relations, and at the same time its disintegration was shown. The author of the article has found an analogy for this attitude of alienation and disinheritance in the interpretation of the life and work of Jean Genet, which was presented by Jean-Paul Sartre in his book „Saint Genet, Actor and Martyr”. The research has reconstructed family relations with his father and mother in Dycki’s poetry, and also examined the function of Ukrainian words appearing in his poems. First of all, his relationship with his mother, indicating an emotional dependence, attracts attention.

She presents the features of the system and rules of its application, quoting examples derived from printed literary masterpieces of three best known 16-th century Polish poets: Mikołaj Rej, Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński. Being convinced of inevitability of replacing old punctuation system by modern one (logical-syntactic) she also perceives necessity of description of the historical one.

Opis:
The article presents three little-known poems of the Lithuanian poet and diarist of the first half of the nineteenth century, Gabriela Puzynina. The seemingly trivial subject related to knitting needlework and conventional form of the poems gain a new value, if considered in the context of sociology and anthropology literature. The analysis, beyond the traditional genre study, are subject to the following issues: the poet as a distinct entity and her membership to women’s environment, the process of building the women’s identity, everyday life and its literary reflection, material culture in the comparison with the anthropocentric approach of the past. There is also raised a question about the way of reception such an occasional literature today. According to the author of the article, reading Puzynina’s poems only as “the literary trifles” wrongfully condemned them to oblivion, yet they are interesting and credible testimony of historical time and a medium for exploring the individual human life from the past.
