The article presents another summary of film events in a year 2010. Films that can be found here are: Benek, directed by Robert Gliński, and concerning Silesian subject, Chrzest (The Christening) second film by young Polish director Marcin Wrona, Czarny czwartek (Black Thursday) which tells the story of the strikes in 1970, and Joanna by Feliks Falk that offers a new perspective on the Second World War. Besides these, some other descriptions of the films that were released in 2010 or in the beginning of 2011 can be found here: Matka Teresa od kotów (Mother Teresa of Cats), Młyn i krzyż (Mill and the Cross), Och, Karol 2, Różyczka (Little Rose), Sala samobójców (Suicide Room), Skrzydlate świnie (Winged Pigs) and Weekend. Polish feature films from the interwar period are to a great extent a reflection of the reality of that time. This can be seen mainly in the presentation of particular architectural objects and fashion from that time. The films are also a source of knowledge about the problems of the time: the impoverishment of the society, economic crisis, prostitution, etc. These pictures reflect reality, yet they are subject to numerous transformations, as the result of the conventions of the chosen genre.

Polish-Russian film relations have a long history. However, they have strongly intensified for the last decade, largely due to political changes. This paper provides an overview of the most representative projects promoting the film industries of the two countries organised both in Poland and in Russia, such as the Sputnik Russian Film Festival in Poland and the Wisła Polish Film Festival in Russia. It also presents the most important joint cinema projects, including Polish-Russian co-productions, Polish films with Russian actors and Russian films with Polish actors.

Artykuł opisuje i analizuje ekranowy wizerunek Słowian obecny w rodzimym filmie w kontekście ich wierzeń i mitologii, przeważnie zderzonych z chrystianizacją ziem polskich. Filmowcy w większości utworów starali się łączyć perspektywę legendarną, fantastyczną z wydarzeniami i realiami historycznymi. Tak jest w adaptacji powieści I. Kraszewskiego Stara baśń dokonanej przez J. Hoffmana oraz filmach Gniazdo (gdzie ważna była kwestia ideologii państwa tzw. Polski Ludowej) i Krew Boga (w czasach współczesnych, bez trybutu płaconego władzy). W utworach, w których mowa o współczesnych losach dawnej mitologii spotykamy dwa modele. Niekiedy (w filmach Jana Jakuba Kolskiego z uniwersum Jańciolandu) słowiańskie wierzenia są ukryte pod dominującą religijnością katolicką, naiwną, ludową, która nie wyrugowała do końca dawnej wiary. Z kolei w cyklach telewizyjnych Legendy Polskie Allegro oraz Krakowskie potwory dla Netfliksa mamy do czynienia ze współczesnymi wcieleniami mitów i legend słowiańskich i ściśle polskich. W produkcji Allegro postawiono na pastisz i ludyczny charakter opowiadania, w serialu platformy streamingowej Netflix próbowano mówić językiem poważnym o obecności danych bóstw we współczesnej metropolii. Oba sposoby dały niedoskonałe artystycznie rezultaty, ale gatunkowo i fabularnie wskazują na kierunek, jakim podążyć mogą kolejne realizacje tematu.
The article describes and analyses the screen image of the Slavs in Polish cinematography in the context of Slavic beliefs and mythology, mostly juxtaposed with the Christianisation of the Polish lands. In most works, filmmakers have tried to combine a legendary, fantastic perspective with historical events and realities. This is the case off Jerzy Hoffman’s adaptation of the novel by I. Kraszewski entitled Stara baśń [The Old Tale], as well as in the films Gniazdo [The Nest] (where the issue of ideology of the so-called People’s Poland was important) and Krew Boga [God’s Blood] (a movie shot in modern times, without the need to pay any tribute to the authorities). In works dealing with contemporary fate of ancient mythology we can differentiate two models. One of them is hiding Slavic beliefs under the naive, folk version of the dominant Catholic religiousness that has not completely eradicated the ancient faith (as in Jan Jakub Kolski’s films from the Jańcioland universe). In contrast, in Allegro’s Polish Legends and in Krakow Monsters TV series made for Netflix we deal with contemporary incarnations of Slavic and specifically Polish myths and legends. Allegro’s production relied on pastiche and ludic storytelling, while the series made for the streaming platform Netflix attempted to speak in earnest about the presence of the deities in question in the modern metropolis. Both ways produced artistically imperfect results, but in terms of genre and story, they point to the direction that future realisations of the theme may take.

The article is devoted to the Polish Film School. The origins of the phenomenon are pre-sented against the background of Polish cinema in post-communist times. The author emphasizes the impact of Italian neo¬ realism upon the Polish Film School, which is strongly reflected in cinematography. Also similarities with and inspirations from German expres-sionism are traced. Critics’ opinions on the most significant films from the Polish Film School and the movement itself are cited.

The purpose of the article is to present the propaganda view of the Polish communist authorities on the events in Poznań on 28 June 1956 by means of the Polish Chronicle. Polish Film Chronicle was one of the elements of political propaganda in the Polish People’s Republic. The picture of Poznań June ‘56, which is shown in three fragments of the chronicle, can bethat emerges from three fragments of the chronicle, can be described as falsified. Many facts have been changed. Apart from the analysis of three excerpts from chronicles directly related to the Poznań 1956 protests there was also the analysis of the social situation at that time. The article also describes alternative topics that were to cover Poznań 1956 protests.

This article deals with various references to William Shakespeare’s plays in Polish postwar films, both theatrical and television ones. There are no Polish film adaptations of Shakespeare’s works except for television dramas made for the Television Theater on state TV. There are, however, Polish films (mainly from 1962–1989) about actors and performing arts with fragments and motifs from Shakespeare plays. Their characters are often actors deprived by fate (or History) of the chance to play a Shakespeare role on stage and forced to play it in life instead.

The article offers a new perspective on Stanisław Siedlecki’s biography through visual history, with a particular emphasis on film history. The connections between Siedlecki’s life and the cinema can be grouped in three sections: 1. films starring Siedlecki, 2. films by Siedlecki and 3. films about Siedlecki. The film Do Ziemi Torella (To Torell Land) represents the pre-war period; the post-war period is marked by Siedlecki’s collaboration with Jarosław Brzozowcki on the making of Skroplone Powietrze (Liquefied Air) and Wieliczka - both from 1946. In the International Geophysical Year 1957/1958, Siedlecki led the Polish polar expedition, during which the visual material was created. He appeared in all three ‘roles’ (as a co-writer, protagonist, and consultant) in Jarosław Brzozowski’s film W Zatoce Białych Niedźwiedzi (In the Polar Bear Bay). He consulted polar films until the early 1990s. There are also two film biographies (portraits) of Siedlecki by Wanda Rollna and Iwona Bartólewska. The analysis of this material has also shed new light on the visual narration of the Polish polar expeditions in the 20th century.
