Opis:: The paper addresses aspects of the language of the Polish diaspora and of the standard language, as forms of language spoken by Poles living abroad. The standard language is/should be common for all Poles – used everywhere and by everyone in the same way. The Polish diaspora language, on the other hand, appears only in specific territories and is used for communication in specific groups of Poles. It differs depending on the country where they settled and on the language it comes into contact with, as well as on the diversity of the emi-grants, and also depending on the Polish they brought from their home coun-try (either them themselves or their parents). Although the terms “Polonia” [Polish diaspora] and “język polonijny” [Polish diaspora language] are com-monly used, one should be aware that the latter are actually numerous.

Opis:: The paper aims at presenting the conclusions of research encompassing: an analysis of the social participation of Poles living abroad alongside with a diagnosis of crucial determinants of that involvement, a diagnosis of their opinions concerning the functioning of Polish diaspora organisations, and the identiﬁ cation of Poles’ readiness to become involved in such organisations. The analysis is based on empirical data collected during an internet survey among Poles living in 11 Western European countries and the USA and a qualitative study conducted among Polish diaspora elites in those countries. Results of the empirical research show that the surveyed Poles living abroad were characterised by: relatively low knowledge of Polish diaspora organisations, a low level of involvement in Polish diaspora organisations, and a low level of readiness for future involvement in such organisations. Moreover, the research proved low levels of the survey participants’ general involvement in three distinct aspects of social life: political, cultural and civil. The article also presents the main determinants of the diagnosed social phenomena.

POLISH DIASPORA IN THE BALKANS
Opis:: The article presents the contribution of Poles to the emergence of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian period. After the Berlin Congress in 1878, the country was in the Habsburg area of influence. This resulted in its rapid industrialization conducted by, among others, a number of Polish civil servants working in its administration, as well as peasants from Galicia who colonized the area around Banja Luka. The topic still remains relatively unstudied in Polish historiography, which is why this article serves as a pioneering work in the studies on this issue.

Opis:: The article focuses, first and foremost, on attitude of the Polish Diaspora in the RSA towards socio-political situation in country of settlement. In solving problem particular attention is drawn to the attitude of the Polish Diaspora to political transition in South Africa. Relation to this process is portrayed by engagement of the Polish Diaspora in building new political order after apartheid – multiethnic democracy called New South Africa, among others through its participation in parliamentary elections, referendums and membership in political parties. Conclusions concentrate on conditions and effects of the Polish Diaspora participation in political life in country of settlement.

Opis:: The present paper is devoted to a small community of Polish descent settled in Chapadão, located in the State of Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil. The area of research involved personal encounters, talks and interviews conducted in Chapadão from 2008 to 2010. Additionally, surveys were carried out via electronic mailings with residents of that area. The surveys inquired about the history of Brazil, the Polish immigration scattered throughout the country and the specific problems of the contemporary Brazilian society. The main part of the study focuses on issues currently dealt with by the people of Polish origin settled at this specific part of the Brazilian inland. The specific issues raised in this section comprise: the history of the community as it is held in its collective memory, the maintenance of ancestral traditions (folk style of clothes, music and cooking, religious rites, etc.), the community’s economic expansion (based on some statistical data, as well) and some peculiar traits of the Polish language spoken in Chapadão. The study accounts for how such small and seemingly forgotten Polish communities, living in peripheral areas, succeed in preserving spiritual links with their country of origin, even in the era of the world’s becoming a global village.

Opis:: This article is devoted to the efforts of Polish missionaries in Japan in the 20th and 21st centuries and to their role in evangelization and in the social life of the Japanese people. It also tackles the question of ministry amongst the Polish diaspora, which is a very important factor in strengthening the ties between Polish compatriots in foreign lands as well as in helping to maintain traditions and customs. The basis for this research on the subject is data collected from individual orders and congregations, the recollections of missionaries and their written compilations along with conversations with missionaries conducted by the author.

Opis:: This article discusses signifi cant problems faced by Polish citizens who live in the Netherlands and who declare their willingness to remain there for the coming years despite the unfair treatment directed towards them. The author elaborates on the history of Polish immigrants in the Netherlands after the Second World War in order to: (1) highlight the Poles’ input into the liberation of the Netherlands during the war and the country’s post-war development; and (2) show mutual, ambivalent Polish Dutch relations between the immigrants and the host society. Based on subject literature, Dutch scientific reports, analyses and surveys, the current situation of Poles is described in the light of unchanging and thus relatively similar problems (despite the passage of time) experienced by Poles living and working in the Netherlands.

Opis:: The article deals with issues to do with organizational life of the Polish milieus in the “old” Member States of the EU-15. It is predominantly focused on the most recent forms of the Poles’ activity which used to be considered an absolute novelty just a few years ago. This is exemplified by a functional analysis of women’s organizations, self-help groups as well as organizations grouping top class specialists. The Author tries to explain the reasons why the Poles flowing into the EU countries try to resolve their problems by themselves. Also, the Author attempts to answer the question why old Polonia organiza-tions are not always able to respond effectively to the recent migrant community needs.

SECOND WORLD WAR
Opis:: The article focuses on Andrew J. Borkowski’s collection of short-stories Copernicus Avenue published in 2011 and awarded the 2012 Toronto Book Award. Written by the son of a Polish war veteran, Copernicus Avenue shows how deeply the trauma of the Second World War has affected the Polish diaspora in Canada. The article begins with an analysis of the stories located in Poland, illustrating the ambivalent moral choices of the protagonists during the war. The traumatic memories of war haunt the protagonists in their New World homes and influence the lives of their descendants as well. On the example of three characters, I illustrate the different approaches to diaspora and homeland in the Polish post-war community in Toronto. I also trace the complex itineraries of the characters, showing that the concept of roots shapes their identity as much as the complicated routes of migrations. As a result, the Polish diaspora in Copernicus Avenue appears a heterogeneous space of community and antagonism, solidarity and exclusion.
