This essay reminds us of the correspondence between Piotr Skarga and Jerome Nadal. The author discusses all seven letters of their written dialogue. T hey exchanged not so many letters and we cannot tell enough about Nadal’s personality and his relationship with a well-known Polish preacher, but their correspondence is really interesting as a unique source of knowledge about the early Society of Jesus, history of the Catholic Church and customs in old Poland, which are described from the point of view of Jesuits.

Opis:
W rozdziale dziewiątym ukazano zmienne koleje fortuny kariery duchownej, by w dziesiątym przedstawić schyłek życia księdza.
This article intends to bring into focus the figure of father Chmielowski who authored the first Polish Universal Encyclopedia commonly known as Nowe Ateny (New Athens). The biography depicts his deeply troubled life – highs and lows of his clerical career, his zest for research and finally his zeal in living a parish priest’s life to the fullest. What emerges from the sources scrutinized is a picture of a highly ambitious person endowed with an unusual humility, true vocation and a great deal of creative energy. The article summarizes the state of research on life and legacy of Benedict Chmielowski. Many data and conclusions (such as those referring to birthplace and family coat of arms) had to undergo verification and correction. The aim of the article was therefore to shed new light on this person, as well as to debunk some persisting stereotypes and misconception, thus drawing a picture of a man of flesh and blood.

Jan Stachniuk (1905–1963) was genuine Polish philosopher and political activist. Stachniuk started his activity in ranks of the left-wing Piłsudskite youth movement but during 1930s he became an ideologue of the anti-Catholic ultra-nationalist far right group called Zadruga. Under Nazi occupation of Poland Zadruga movement was absorbed into left-nationalist Stronnictwo Zrywu Narodowego and after the World War II Stachniuk unsuccessfully tried to collaborate with new communist regime. His ideology was synthesis of pantheist neopaganism, extreme pan-Slavic nationalism and totalitarian (quasi-Stalinist) version of socialism but his last – and most mature – works proclaimed universalist ideal of human creativity.

Opis:
The author discusses his inspirations and premises behind Polish Composers 1918-2000, which appeared in print in 2005, jointly published by the Warsaw and Gdańsk Academies of Music. It consists of two volumes – Essays and Biographical Entries. The former presents a wide panorama of social, political and cultural phenomena, which influenced the development of Polish music in the 20th century. The second volume consists of around 1300 biographical entries. This paper contains remarks about the contents planned for the English version of the book. Two complementary sources of inspiration determined the book’s coming into being. The first, a belief that the accomplishments of Polish composers of the 20th century are just as outstanding as they are little-known. The second inspiration comes from an observation that the list of the finest musical compositions of the 20th century (289 items), compiled in 1992 by Leo Gerhartz from the European Radio Union, ranks Polish music as no. 12. It is represented by 10 compositions by 4 composers: Witold Lutosławski (5 compositions), Karol Szymanowski (2 compositions), Krzysztof Penderecki (2 compositions), and Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1 composition). At the outset of the research, two seemingly simple but essential questions had to be answered. The first one being who do we call a composer, and the other, who do we consider to be a Polish composer. In the author’s view, a composer is a person who has composed at least one musical composition, a piece which became known as an artistic fact. Here, “become known” means primarily a public performance of a piece. The author’s attention focused on the lives and works of the so-called classical composers. While searching for an answer to the question as to who can be considered a Polish composer, the author analyses statements made by outstanding Polish researchers. He shares their view that ‘Polishness’ should not be determined by nationality or language, but by participation in Polish culture, and an affiliation to it. The last part of the paper concerns the structure and contents of the English version of the book. It will be published jointly by the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. The book will not be a simple and direct translation of the Polish version. The contents of the Essays volume will be different, and the Biographical Entries volume will include, first of all, the following entries: winners of Polish and international composition competitions, composers who have rendered great services to Polish musical culture, priests-composers or other persons, whose creative activities are closely linked to the music of the Catholic Church, and representatives of the younger generation of composers, who have become known after the year 2000. The goal of the planned book is an attempt at proving the thesis that the contribution of Polish composers to the European cultural achievements, their outstanding accomplishments in the area of culture, are of the highest value.

Opis:
The article analyses the unique copy of the old Polish catholic hymn book Pieśni nabożne na święta uroczyste według porządku Kościoła ś. katolickiego na cały rok z wielką pilnością zebrane [Songs of piety and devotion...] published in Cracow in 1627 and found at the library at Escorial in Spain. The book, apparently the first known printed Polish catholic extensive hymn book, contained over 140 songs, in Polish and Latin, including works written by Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej. The article also describes later editions of the hymn book. This is a particularly important book in the history of Polish culture because it was repeatedly republished in different printing offices, not only Catholic, under the same or slightly changed title as late as until the nineteenth century. Numerous editions of the hymn book constitute a valuable source for the study of Polish Catholic hymns as they make it possible to follow and trace the chronology of works, their textual variations and the popularity of particular songs or hymns within a particular time frame, as well as their range of influence and regional occurrence.

The text presents an analysis of three Polish herbariums from the period of the sixteenth to the seventeenth centuries as examples representing the ancient academic discourse. The presented considerations allow for maintaining the claim about the cultural aspect of Polish academic discourse in the distant past. The texts which represent it are the source of the information about the state of the knowledge in chosen domains and dis- ciplines. Moreover, they constitute the reflection of the knowledge itself in its practi- cal use described in the herbariums, which is a peculiar feature of old Polish academic texts. Justified, then, is the claim that these analysed texts and their discourse are aca- deming in nature, of course on condition that one takes into account their historical context. Apart from the professional awareness of the time, one notices certain strate- gies for constructing the texts and their discourse which prove the academic discourse. Features such as precision, objectivity, argument problematisation etc. were developed and strengthened in subsequent centuries.

The merging of the Constitutional and Legal History of Poland with the General Constitutional and Legal History into one subject Constitutional and Legal History gave rise to the fear that Polish constitutional and legal institutions may be blurred in the area of general history. The absence of individual subject, whose name reflected Polishness, might contribute to the weakening of the spirit of historical community of Polish society, the spirit being previously moulded by the discussed subject. The essential educational element in the forming of the frame of mind of the lawyer inclined toward humanities is the knowledge of above all the constitutional history of his own country, the evolution of its political institutions and the law applied in courts. The discussed modification of the process of educating future lawyers at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economy of the University of Wrocław may push to the background questions which laid the emphasis on the vernacular legal culture of the state. It is from the native constitutional and legal history that we obtain the first line experience. The subject that was thus eliminated was the one characterized by rich historiography and the one that emphasized the historical continuity of Polish state and law.

In a society which is increasingly visual, and the teaching of history and critical thinking so important in an age of post-truth and fake news, the words of the Swedish poet, Linn Hansén, seem particularly apt: what is history, is what is illustrated. The images found in history coursebooks help learners to imagine the past, providing a visual aid to support learning, but they can also be used to foster critical thinking by treating the images as historical sources in themselves. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted on the functions of images contained in Polish and British history coursebooks using a proprietary paradigm developed on the basis of existing scholarship in English Language Teaching. It shows that the pedagogical functions of images in history coursebooks vary greatly between the two educational contexts. In Britain, images are typically treated as historical sources in themselves, whilst in Poland they typically perform more of a decorative function. The paper closes with a number of recommendations for further research and publishers of history coursebooks.

‘Optimism against all odds’: Polish National Identity in War Films of Jerzy PassendorferUsing archival sources, movie reviews, secondary sources and films, this article examines the cinema of Jerzy Passendorfer, the founding father of action movies genre in People’s Poland, but also the staunch supporter of Władysław Gomułka’s ‘Polish road to Socialism’ and General Mieczysław Moczar’s ultranationalist faction of the Partisans in the Polish United Workers’ Party. It demonstrates how Passendorfer’s blend of mainstream cinema and propaganda legitimized the party state and contributed to the construction of a new ethos, identity, and politics of history that enforced historical amnesia and syncretized past and present. It also argues that Passendorfer’s promotion of nationalist and authoritarian state ideology, militaristic patriotism and Polish-Soviet alliance, commissioned by the regime, sat well with mass audiences, precisely because of the use of popular genres adopted from the West and the quench for optimistic visions of nationhood. Although Passendorfer’s patriotic actions flicks faded away with the fall of Gomułka’s regime, they constitute a model, which can be still emulated.

The author defines intellectual culture as a tendency to base decisions on objective analyses or the habit of investigating issues analytically. In the broader sense, intellectual culture may be considered to be the way the collective reacts to phenomena that appear in the real world. A high level of intellectual culture, in the author’s opinion, is shown by a modern form of thinking manifested in the ability to make use of abstracts and to take into account alternative systems of constructing opinions. On the basis of selected analyses of Polish scholars the author advances the hypothesis that Poland has failed to form proper institutional mechanisms favoring rational analysis in public life. The author demonstrates that this is the result of many factors, such as the long-lasting model of Sarmatian customs (including its providentialism), the strong and lasting influence of a radical form of romanticism, and also the nugatory influence of Enlightenment and positivist models. These factors have been accompanied by the unsuitability of educational and scholarly institutions, the delayed development of modern forms of economics, which force the use of rational calculations, and a structure of society that does not favor exchanges of ideas and deliberation.

Opis:
This article takes a look at contemporary Polish prose dealing with theme of the Shoah. “Contemporary”, in this case, means fiction published in the 1990s and after the year 2000, thus already in the twenty-first century. It therefore comprises the last twenty-five years. The fundamental categories used here in the analyses of texts, are the memory and post-memory of the Shoah. The authors who have published works over the last twenty five years have either been witnesses of these events (i.e. Children of the Holocaust), or – more often – representatives of the second or third generation after the Shoah. In this article, contemporary Polish fiction will be exemplified by the prose of Marek Bieńczyk, Piotr Szewc, Igor Ostachowicz, Mariusz Sieniewicz and Piotr Paziński. Analysis contains four categories which structure both the world represented and the form of the prose: transgression, pop-culture, history and metonymy.
