Opis:
The paper attempts to provide an analyses of poetically-encoded discourse about generation change in selected verses written by outstanding Russian poets of the 19th and 20th century – Pushkin, Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Esenin and Mayakovsky, under a partial comparison with similar motives appearing by the German poet Goethe. The central problem is the axiological assessment of continuity vs. conflict of generations as well as the general confrontation with the “challenge of time”, both from existential and socially determined perspectives. The concepts of positive vs. negative connoted changes and the problem of their acceptability in the analysed verses are presented by means of a formal-semantic description with a special stress on language entities denoting the conceptual sphere of time and generation change.

Opis:
The author discusses the so-called „civil poetry”, which is now closer to journalism and becomes part of the political discourse, becoming part of media. The poetry participates in political communication, reflecting the oppositional sentiment of society. The author demonstrates that poetic discourse approaches to the journalistic one by the set of ideologemes, the social evaluation, the author’s intention to change the perception and the worldview of the recipient, the strategies of persuasion and linguistic manipulation. Special attention is given to irony and citations as interpretive methods of formation of the evaluation, and to expression of subjectivity. The article concludes the convergence of poetic and political discursive practices. The research is based on the material of Russian socio-political poetry of the circle of the “New literary review”, fellonneau poetry of D. Bykov and L. Kaganov and German political poetry, published by the newspaper “Die Zeit”. Content analysis, linguistic analysis of the text and com- municative-cognitive analysis methods have been used.

Opis:
In the article, the author analyses the satirical works by Julian Tuwim published in his poetic collections. By indicating the strong bonds between poetry and satire in the poet’s works, the author explains the phenomenon of the unwavering topicality of Tuwim’s satire having generalising ambitions. She has considered the poet’s masterful combination of the poetic perspective with the attitude of a satirist as a factor which enables the generalisation of the critical diagnosis. However, she argues that the universal dimension of his wide-scope satirical works is mainly determined by the poet’s worldview-based horizons, which constituted the point of reference for his critical evaluation of the existing social reality, which exposed the destructive influence of a community on an individual. She also stated that he was able to peer deep into the mentality of the mindless members of the “tyrannous community” by virtue of his distance towards himself, in turn being the result of his sense of the absurdity of his own existence.

Wartościowanie poezji w Zarysie literatury polskiej z ostatnich lat szesnastu Piotra Chmielowskiego. Kilka punktów widzenia

Opis:
The article analyses the mode of establishing and recording the process of poetry valuation in Zarys literatury polskiej z ostatnich lat szesnastu [An outline of the literature of the last sixteen years] written by Piotr Chmielowski, as well as the textual strategies of the author that modeled the transformations in the discourse of the author. It is proved in the article that in the Chmielowski’s disquisitions the problem of evaluation is just as important as the evaluation as a problem. The evaluation of poetry conducted by the critic was an element of self-identification of the generation of ”young poets” that he himself represented, as well as a proof for their longing for grand poetry, discomfort resulting from lack of authority figures and difficulties in expressing one’s own or/and national suffering. The use of the so-called ”argument of poetry” has been recognized here as a distinctive feature of Chmielowski’s idiolect that serves to dynamize his critical writings.

This article examines the contentious proposition that poetry has for the past few decades been experiencing a crisis, especially when it comes to student engagement. By means of the results of a study conducted in an English as a second language context, it explores teachers’ and students’ beliefs, attitudes and practices in relation to poetry. This article shows that the very discourse used to talk about poetry is a direct reflection of how much cachet it is ascribed in the classroom. It questions whether this inflation of cachet is responsible for the fact that poetry is not perceived as a genre that teachers and students opt to read for personal pleasure.

Opis:
Considering poetry as a literary form in close relation with absence and scarcity; this paper deals with some of the most frequent and significant forms of absence that appear in poetic texts. The physical absence of the other, due either to death or to the distance between the two individuals, is the most common kind in lyric poetry. Modern poetry often deals with Gods’ absence, which represents an important loss for the contemporary human being, trying to understand or face it. There is also the lack of inspiration and words with efficient expressive capacity that make poets suffer. However, poetry is the only way in which they express their situation and create a meaningful language. Finally, absence in poetry is also a fundamental sign of its generic specificity in connection with the means that it uses, as well as with its printed representation on paper, especially in the contemporary production. In all cases, poetry, based on the dialectic of being – not being, operates as a material, sensible and intellectual presence, which like the primordial logos fillsthe vacuum, eliminates absence and scarcity, generates and animates the human world and en-riches it with presence and meaning.

The paper analyzes several poems by the Princess Shikishi (11491200) from the viewpoint of Manyôshû appropriation. Despite relative scarcity of allusions to Manyôshû, some features in her appropriation style are found in the poetry of other contemporary poets, e.g. frequent appropriation of volumes XXI and well-known Manyôshû lines, utilization of secondary sources rather than Manyôshû manuscripts, etc. This demonstrates complexity of channels through which Manyôshû was appropriated. Simultaneously, there are features of her Manyôshû appropriation that distinguished her from other contemporary poets, which evidences that Princess Shikishi was not only a participant in but also a significant contributor to early medieval poetic discourse.

Opis:
This paper examines the literary representation of the beginnings of the Northern Irish Troubles with regard to a gender variable (women’s roles and functions ascribed to them, mostly punitively, by men ), in the selected poems by Heaney, Durcan, Boland, Meehan and Morrissey. The reading of Heaney’s “Punishment” will attempt to focus not solely on the poem’s repeatedly criticized misogyny but on analyzing it in a broader, historical context of the North’s conflict. In Durcan’s case, his prominent nationalist descent or his declared contempt for any form of paramilitary terrorism (including the IRA) do not seem to prevent him entirely from immortalizing female victims of the Troubles. Boland’s attitude seems the most unequivocal: the clear aversion to the language of death and rendering Irish women’s experiences (and children’s) in this discourse. The article concludes with analysis of Meehan’s “Southern” guilt for the situation of Catholics in the North with the simultaneous critique of perpetrated violence and Morrissey’s complicated standpoint: atheist/neutral/Protestant/communist and her striving for the impossible impartiality in a war-ridden and politically divided country. Trying to avoid systemic victimization of Irish women, the paper intends to analyze the historical and political circumstances which made them more susceptible to various forms of attacks at the beginnings of the Troubles, as reflected in the titular labels.

Opis:
This article is of a comparative nature and attempts to contrast the poetic output of two Nobel prize-winners, i.e. Eugenio Montale and Wisława Szymborska. The author uncovers numerous similarities especially between Montale’s late works and Szymborska’s poetry. This is particularly visible on two planes, i.e. existential reflection and language, as well as poetic means. The Italian poet and Polish poetess focus on the individual presented as being under pressure from the modern world’s vast, impersonal forces, e.g. history, progress etc. They treat the traditional poetic means of expression with mistrust and instead favour the kind of language that is as clear as possible, subject to philosophical reflection, and infused with irony, allegory and paradox.
