Opis:: The purpose of this paper is to explore the references to nuptial customs found in the Song of Songs as well as their place in relation to the structure of the text. The first stage of analysis consists of identifying various types of these references, while the second stage involved analysing and evaluating their positioning within the composition of the Song of Songs as an expression of the editorial intent of the biblical writers. The study has used elements of form analysis and lexical analysis as well as a comparative analysis of biblical and non-biblical/sub-biblical texts. The analysis revealed that the most important places in the structure of the Song of Songs are allocated to the so-called “poetic episodes,” which have been distinguished earlier, concerning the different stages of nuptials – engagement negotiations, wedding procession, wedding feast and consummation of the marriage. Therefore, they constitute a point of reference for the interpretation of the remaining songs and at the same time the teachings of the sages in the Song of Songs.

Opis:: Ideą, która przyświecała nam przy napisaniu artykułu, było uwypuklenie roli motywów muzycz- nych w twórczości literackiej Virginii Woolf, jak również zwrócenie uwagi na związki, które łączyły ją z muzyką, jej twórcami oraz odbiorcami. Mimo że poetycka proza pisarki ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, bogato czerpiąc z obszaru sztuk siostrzanych, szczególnie malarstwa, zagadnienie jej związków z muzyką jest traktowane marginalnie. Choć sama Woolf nie posiadała teoretycznego przygotowania muzycznego i nie grała na żadnym instrumencie, muzyka odgrywała istotną rolę w jej życiu, albowiem dorastała ona w świecie dźwięków, głównie za sprawą przyrod- niej siostry Stelli. Była też stałą bywalczynią imprez muzycznych. Najsilniej jednak na kształtowa- nie jej wrażliwości i preferencji muzycznych oddziaływali przyjaciele: Saxon Sydney-Turner i kompozytorka Ethel Smythe. Ślady konwergencji muzyki i literatury odnaleźć można nie tylko w eseistyce i powieściach pisarki, ale również w jej twórczości publicystycznej. Warsztat pisarski Woolf ulegał stałej ewolucji. Pisarka bardzo chętnie sięgała do idiomatyki języka muzycznego, wzbogacając tym samym repertuar środków leksykalnych i stylistycznych. Do jej ulubionych kompozytorów należeli J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart i L. van Beethoven. Szczególnie wiele uwagi poświęciła jednak R. Wagnerowi, stosunek do muzyki którego w jej dojrzałym pisarstwie uległ poważnej redefinicji. Choć proza Woolf ma charakter wybitnie psychologiczny, o jej wartości decyduje również wymiar estetyczny, o czym w dużym stopniu decydują odniesienia do muzyki.
The idea behind writing this article was to emphasise the role of musical references in Virginia Woolf’s literary output as well as drawing attention to the connections between the writer and some selected composers and recipients of music. Despite the fact that Woolf’s poetic prose is considered to be of interdisciplinary character, abundantly drawing from the realm of the sister arts, painting in particular, the issue of the writer’s connections with music seems to have been neglected thus far. Woolf did not possess any musical theoretical background, nor did she play any musical instrument. Nonetheless, music played a significant role in her life. She was brought up being surrounded by the sounds of music, particularly thanks to her stepsister, Stella. She was also a regular at the musical events, both in London and abroad. The strongest influence upon shaping her musical sensitivity and preferences, however, was exerted on her by her intimates: Saxon Sydney-Turner and Ethel Smythe, the composer. The traces of convergence of music and literature can be found not only in her essays and novels, but also in her journalism. Woolf’s literary technique underwent the process of constant evolution and redefinition. Consequently, she avidly referred to the idiom of musical terminology and in so doing enriched the repertoire of the lexical and stylistic devices applied in her writing. Among her favourite composers were J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart and L. van Beethoven. But, her particular attention was focused on R.Wagner, the attitude to the music of whom in the mature phase of her literary activity was considerably redefined. Although Woolf’s prose is predominantly of psychological character, its value is significantly enhanced by its aesthetic qualities, which to a great extent was achieved by the application of musical references.
