    W podróży królewskiego bratanka Andrzeja Batorego do Rzymu stół stanowił przestrzeń zdobywania doświadczeń w różnych sferach. Podejmowany na dworach dygnitarzy Andrzej Batory poznawał etykietę i obyczaje stołowe renesansowych Włoch, organizując według podobnych wzorców własny dwór. Stół bywał przestrzenią prowadzenia rozmów dyplomatycznych, w czym młodzieniec realizował obowiązki poselskie. Toczone przy obiedzie dysputy z humanistami (takimi jak Marc-Antoine Muret) rozwijały jego umysłowość; muzyka i sztuki plastyczne towarzyszące ucztom z kardynałami i książętami włoskimi ubogacały gust artystyczny Batorego, a nowe potrawy – jego gust kulinarny. Spotkania z autorytetami religijnymi (Karol Boromeusz, Claudio Acquaviva, krąg oratorian), a także pobożne praktyki, jak: post, jałmużny żywieniowe i nabożne lektury przy stole, umacniały w końcu katolickie wyznanie młodzieńca.
    This study examines the significance of the dining table as a space for gaining various kinds of experience in the journey of the royal nephew Andrzej Batory to Rome. At the courts of esteemed dignitaries, Batory assimilated Renaissance Italian dining etiquette and customs, subsequently establishing his own court, based on analogous models. The table served as a platform for diplomatic discourse, enabling the young Batory to fulfil his diplomatic obligations. Engaging in intellectual debates with prominent humanists, notably Marc-Antoine Muret, at the dinner table fostered his intellectual faculties. Moreover, the integration of music and visual arts during the sumptuous banquets attended by Italian cardinals and princes enriched Batory’s artistic sensibilities, while the introduction of novel culinary creations refined his gastronomic taste. Encounters with esteemed religious figures, including Carlo Borromeo, Claudio Acquaviva, and the Oratorian circle, coupled with such devout practices as fasting and almsgiving, as well as studying religious texts at the table, ultimately served to fortify the young Batory’s Catholic faith.

    Opis:
    Podróż w okresie nowożytnym odgrywała ważną rolę w kształtowaniu horyzontu „geograficznego” oraz tworzeniu wyobrażeń o „obcych” państwach i „innych” narodach. „Ciekawość” była podstawowym impulsem do rozpoczęcia podróży, stymulowała rozwój wiedzy, inspirowała oraz zachęcała do skrupulatnej obserwacji otaczającej rzeczywistości. Celem artykułu jest zrekonstruowanie sympatii i uprzedzeń wobec angielskiego społeczeństwa oraz wyobrażenia Anglii istniejącego w świadomości staropolskich wojażerów. Podstawę źródłową artykułu stanowią drukowane i rękopiśmienne relacje z podróży i misji poselskich oraz instrukcje wychowawcze. Relacje zawierają intersujące deskrypcje, które są świadectwem konfrontacji wyobrażeń z zastaną rzeczywistością. Materiał źródłowy prezentuje różnorodny wizerunek Anglika. W relacjach staropolskich podróżników dominują uwagi związane z aspektem religijnym. Opisy panującego wyznania były nacechowane emocjonalnie oraz stanowiły manifestację uczuć i przekonań religijnych katolików, jak również innowierców. Obraz Anglika – heretyka to stereotyp mocno osadzony w mentalności staropolskiej. Otrzymany obraz Anglii to wynik realnie istniejącej rzeczywistości, ale również subiektywnych opinii, wrażeń, sympatii oraz mitów i stereotypów funkcjonujących w sarmackiej świadomości.
    Das Reisen in der Neuzeit spielte eine wichtige Rolle bei der Gestaltung des geografischen Horizonts und der Gestaltung der Vorstellungen von „fremden“ Ländern und „anderen“ Völkern. Die „Neugier“ war der primäre Antrieb für das Reisen, stimulierte die Entwicklung von Wissen, inspirierte und förderte die gewissenhafte Beobachtung der umgebenden Realität. Ziel des Artikels ist es, die Sympathien und Vorurteile gegenüber der englischen Gesellschaft und das Englandbild im Bewusstsein der altpolnischen Reisenden zu rekonstruieren. Die Quellenbasis des Artikels bilden gedruckte und handschriftliche Berichte über Reisen und Missionen der Gesandten sowie Erziehungsanweisungen. Die Berichte enthalten interessante Beschreibungen, die von der Konfrontation der Vorstellungen mit der vorgefundenen Realität zeugen. Das Quellenmaterial präsentiert ein vielfältiges Bild des Engländers. In den Berichten altpolnischer Reisender dominieren Bemerkungen, die sich auf den religiösen Aspekt beziehen. Die Beschreibungen der herrschenden Religion waren emotional aufgeladen und stellten eine Manifestation der Gefühle und der religiösen Überzeugungen von Katholiken sowie von Nichtgläubigen dar. Das Bild des Engländers als Ketzers ist ein fest in der altpolnischen Mentalität verankertes Stereotyp. Das daraus resultierende Bild von England ist das Ergebnis der real existierenden Wirklichkeit, aber auch subjektiver Meinungen, Eindrücke, Sympathien sowie Mythen und Stereotypen, die im sarmatischen Bewusstsein wirkten. 
    Travel in the modern period played an important role in shaping the geographical horizon and creating perceptions of ‘foreign’ countries and ‘other’ peoples. ‘Curiosity’ was the basic impulse to embark on a journey to ‘foreign’ countries. It stimulated the development of knowledge, inspired, and encouraged meticulous observation of the surrounding reality. The aim of the article is to reconstruct sympathies and prejudices towards English society and the image of England existing in the consciousness of Old Polish voyagers. The source base of the article consists of printed and manuscript accounts of journeys and ambassadorial missions, as well as instructions written down by parents or guardians. The accounts contain rich and intriguing descriptions, which are a testimony to the confrontation of imagination with reality. The source material presents a diverse image of the English people. Accounts by Old Polish travelers are dominated by remarks related to the religious aspect. Descriptions of the prevailing religion were emotionally charged and constituted a manifestation of the feelings and religious beliefs of Catholics as well as dissenters. The image of the heretic Englishman is a stereotype firmly rooted in the Old Polish mentality. The resulting image of England has its roots in reality, but also in subjective opinions, impressions, sympathies as well as in myths and stereotypes functioning in the Sarmatian consciousness.
