Opis:
This article explores the issue of the collective consciousness and self-consciousness in teaching and learning foreign languages. A review of the literature on the current issues of interculturality and plurilingualism in relation to the notions of consciousness and self-consciousness is first detailed. The issue raised allows us to question the impact of this consideration in terms of the consequences of this work on class dynamics. In fact, can the awareness and self-awareness of learners regarding intercultural and plurilingual practices exist outside of a co-construction with other learners, with the teacher? The research methodology is based on an analysis of interactions in the language class which brings into play these intercultural and plurilingual approaches (resulting from the LISTIAC and FLSCAN projects). It reports significant results on the co-construction of consciousness and emerging self-consciousness in the language class about the singular universals of languages and cultures. The discussion shows the value of a collective, and no longer purely personal understanding (for the learner) of consciousness and self-awareness of these plurilingual and cultural experiences.

Opis:

When discussing the results I analyze i.a. Opis:
Można tu wymienić m.in. zwielokrotniony dostęp do informacji, pozytywne interferencje językowe wspomagające proces uczenia się kolejnych języków obcych, inny wymiar interakcji i więzi społecznej z interlokutorem, pozytywny wizerunek wielojęzycznej jednostki w społeczeństwie oraz posiadanie kompetencji będących źródłem prestiżu społecznego i osobistej satysfakcji.
In line with Freund’s considerations about civilization and Bauman’s study of postmodernity, the paper presents plurilingualism as another possible source of discontent. The objective of the study was to examine both positive and negative aspects of multiple language skills, including their sociological and linguistic dimension. By means of in-depth interview and qualitative analysis of the statements of multilingual interviewees the value of plurilingualism was measured and described. The research findings show the difficulties resulting from multiple language skills (time management, interferences, code switching) and evidence the social and linguistic benefits, such as prestige, positive features attributed to multilingual individuals, greater access to information, additive language acquisition effect, facilitated international relationships and communication and last, but not least, a source of personal satisfaction.

Opis:
Media consumption is commonly seen as a major way of appropriating languages and cultures. Availability and accessibility of material are essential conditions for developing plurilingual cultural practices. Transnational circulation of cultural goods has reached a particular intensity in today’s world but is still marked by deep language inequalities. Combining sociolinguistic, language education, cultural sociology, and multiliteracy approaches, this study examines how plurilingual readers access books in their different languages. This qualitative analysis is based on 24 in-depth interviews with both migrant and non-migrant adults living in Western Europe. The findings indicate that printed and digital books in dominant languages circulate more easily, and through more visible and formal channels than books in dominated languages. In addition, the local and online book supply in dominant languages is generally cheaper and more varied, thus being more attractive. However, a wider range of means of access to books, and the active participation of the readers themselves in the circulation of cultural goods enable book-reading practices in less disseminated languages. Pedagogical recommendations for language teachers to encourage autonomous cultural practices among learners according to global evolutions and local specificities are provided.

The modern working world is characterized by increasingly complex external and internal pluri- and multilingualism, which poses growing challenges for professional communication. In order to be able to systematically capture this increasing complexity, a separate model is required. In this model, on the one hand, the individual languages and their linguistic varieties of external and internal multilingualism and, on the other hand, the first-, second- and foreign-language competencies of individual persons are entered in a matrix. In this way, multilingual settings of professions or workplaces as well as multilingual profiles of individual persons can be described in a differentiate manner and corresponding political and didactic measures can be taken.

The article analyses the issue of international partnership in plurilingual language education as a prerequisite of creating common grounds for productive communication in a pan-European area, part of which Ukraine is. In this context, the past and present day practices in teaching and learning foreign languages in Ukraine have been described. The historical retrospection in the regular practice of language school education in the 19th-20th centuries proves that although plurilingualism has been a constant trend of the individual existence a multilingual and multicultural setting of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, it has never been really valued as a factor of personal, academic or professional development of an individual and the society as a whole. New social and individual perspectives that have opened in Ukraine after proclaiming state independence in August 1991 inspired the demand for real-life communicative skills in foreign languages. The key intention of the paper is to show how significantly foreign language education has been facilitated by a start of active cooperation with Western educational and cultural institutions. The narration ends with conclusions that stress the necessity of reciprocal efforts on the part of Ukraine and its partners to get a synergetic effect of their collaboration.

Opis:
Inspired by the unexpected results of a standardized questionnaire survey of Swiss university students’ motivation and attitudes toward English, the paper discusses the influence of global and local contexts on language learners’ motivation and identity. As a result of the unprecedented spread of English as a foreign language (Crystal, 2003; Graddol, 2006), and, more importantly, the underlying social and economic issues that it reflects, elements of the global context intermingle with local realities to create new learning experiences, unaccounted for by traditional research paradigms. Individuals find themselves at the convergence of multiple contexts that affect and are in turn affected by their language attitudes and identity as well as sense of self. The intricate relationships between contexts and individuals continue to gain emphasis in current approaches to language learning motivation (cf. Dörnyei, MacIntyre, & Henry, 2015), which position L2 learnin in a new light, questioning the power and relevance of different motivational categories and also these of a generalizable theoretical model. The quantitative study presented in this paper explores interrelationships among key elements of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2009) and a number of motivational factors on the one hand, contrasting them against the economic and social background of the Swiss context on the other. The findings of the project reveal that such repositioning of the participants in the multicultural, plurilingual environment of Geneva and its socioeconomic reality was indeed essential to the interpretation of the results since the extraordinary strength of external and societal factors in participants’ motivational profile gained meaning only in the light of the particularities of the local context. Therefore, the paper showcases the potential of a broader perspective on L2 motivation and the importance of learner-context relationships.

The objective of the article is to analyze the attitudes of foreign language teachers towards students’ mother tongues or heritage languages, as migrant students to the city of Gdańsk, Poland, use them as a compensation strategy in formal language learning. On the basis of a survey methodology, the author will try to explore language teacher beliefs regarding the perception of the coexistence and the use of other languages (including Polish) in mainstream FL education and attempt to compile good practices in this regard, reported by the teachers surveyed. Referring to his earlier research (Lankiewicz 2013, 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021), the author hypothesizes that language teachers manifesting higher levels of critical language awareness will be more prone to draw upon students’ linguistic repertoires in the education processes, while others will suppress any form of intercomprehension, code-switching or language meshing.

In an era marked by rapid change, educators face a persistent call to nurture creativity in students, prompting them to explore innovative solutions. This study investigates the role of students’ plurilingual resources in fostering creativity within a foreign language classroom at secondary school level. Students collaboratively produced literary writings (songs, poems, and short stories) in which they applied their plurilingual resources (all of languages they knew). This case study employs a bottom-up approach to analyse students’ texts to determine whether facilitating the use of their diverse linguistic resources, including the blending of codes and modes, acts as a catalyst for creativity. The research results indicate that the foreign language classroom can indeed serve as a platform for students to engage in various forms of language creativity. The findings also suggest that encouraging students to utilize their diverse linguistic resources enhances language creativity. Additionally, the analysis highlights that the collaborative nature of the task supports the notion that exploring multiple solutions, rather than adhering to a single correct answer, fosters creativity. Furthermore, evidence indicates that creating a safe environment for learners is crucial for encouraging playful and unconventional language use for creative purposes.

This article discusses plurilingualism in the dialect comedies of Molisan playwright Antonio Angelone. After a brief biographical sketch of the author, the rich, expressive, and authentic dialect spoken by his protagonists from the peasant class is analysed. Furthermore, essential details and examples pertaining to Angelone’s keen awareness of the challenges of writing in dialect are provided. The most fundamental part of this essay focuses on the plurilingual aspects that—certainly not extraneous to literary production in Italy—fully manifest themselves in Angelone’s comedies; this occurs through characters created by a playwright who excels at highlighting how important it is to employ linguistic varieties adapted to the circumstances and needs of the protagonists to make the theatrical experience more authentic and more credible for the reader/viewer. Along with the dialect or dialects, there are examples of Standard Italian, popular Italian, and italiese, or the language of North-American Italians, in the repertoire of the protagonists, pronounced by characters who belong to different generations, who are from different social classes, and who come from different geographical areas.
