Opis:
In this paper we analyze the possibility to use the reflex discharge plasma as a volume source of negative hydrogen ions. The basic internal parameters like the temperature Te and the density ne of the electrons, the density ni of the positive hydrogen ions, the density n- of the negative hydrogen ions, and the negative ion fraction n-/ne are measured and discussed. The operating conditions are optimized within the pressure range 0.1-10 Pa, the discharge power 20-140 watt, and the magnetic field 0-150 gauss. The experiment shows that the enhanced magnetic ionization is the most effective within the pressure range from 0.7 to 4.0 Pa. When p ť 1 Pa the cold electron temperature Te is 0.77 eV, the cold electron density ne is 4.2 ´ 10 18 m-3 and the negative ion density n- is as high as 0.8 x 10 17 m-3. The negative ion fraction n-/ne increases from 1.4% for p = 0.1 Pa to almost 2.2% within the pressure range 1-4 Pa. The positive ion density scales with the power, while the negative ion density and the negative ion fraction seems to saturate at higher power levels.

Opis:
Plasma derived flash X-ray sources may find potential applications in medicine and industry. Notwithstanding, as is the case of Plasma Focus (PF) devices, their characterisation in term of photon energy, temporal and spatial beam stability is far to be considered satisfactory. In this work, a radiographic approach, which avoids the effects caused by the intrinsic instability of the pinch output of a PF machine, is proposed and an attenuation curve can be attained even in presence of Xray emission instability. Using two radiographic films for each shot exposition symmetrically positioned and collimated to the pinch region the mean energy of the photons in the X-ray beam are evaluated. The X-ray emission symmetry from the pinch region was then utilised to control the validity of the proposed methodology.

Opis:
This paper presents a set of diagnostics dedicated to PF-24 – new medium size – plasma focus (PF) device built and operated at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN). The PF-24 can operate at energy level up to 93 kJ and charging voltage up to 40 kV. Each condenser is connected with a specially designed spark gap with a very small jitter, which ensures a high efficiency and a low current rise time. The working parameters of PF-24 generator make it a suitable tool for testing new detection systems to be used in fusion research. Four types of such detection systems are presented in this article: three diagnostic systems used to measure electric quantities (Rogowski coil, magnetic probe, capacitance probe), neutron counter based on beryllium activation, fast neutron pinhole camera based on small-area BCF-12 plastic scintillation detectors and high-speed four-frame soft X-ray camera with microchannel plate.

Opis:
In this work we have studied the energy and spectral characteristics of miniaturized dielectric barrier discharge KrCl-, XeCl-, XeBr-, and Xe2-excilamps of various designs as well as short pulse point-like light sources based on runaway electron preionized diffuse discharge. The maximum ultraviolet power density was 20 mW/cm2, which is comparable with the densities of ordinary dielectric barrier discharge excilamps, whereas the maximum efficiencies of the excilamps were not greater than 2.5%. The causes for the low radiation efficiency of the compact dielectric barrier discharge driven excilamps were analyzed. It is found that at an electron concentration of ne > 1014 cm–3, the efficiency decreases due to enhanced quenching of excited atoms or molecules in dissociation by electron impact. The spectral characteristics of a runaway electron preionized diffuse discharge formed between two pointed electrodes in atmospheric pressure air in an inhomogeneous electric field at a gap shorter than 8 mm were investigated. It is shown that the radiation spectrum of the discharge consists of bands of the second positive nitrogen system, and as the discharge transforms to a spark, lines of the electrode material appear in the spectrum. At a gap of 0.5 mm, weak X-rays from the discharge gap were detected.

Opis:
The source of X-ray radiation with the energy of quanta that may vary in the range hv = 1÷12 keV was developed for studies in X-ray interaction with matter and modifi cation of solid surfaces. It was based on a vacuum spark discharge with the laser triggering. It was shown in our experiments that there is a possibility to adjust X-ray radiation spectrum by changing the confi guration of the electrode system when the energy stored in the capacitor is varied within the range of 1÷17 J. A comprehensive study of X-ray imaging and quanta energy was carried out. These experiments were carried out for the case of both direct and reverse polarity of the voltage on the electrodes. Additionally, ion composition of plasma created in a laser-triggered vacuum discharge was analyzed. Highly charged ions Zn(+21), Cu(+20) and Fe(+18) were observed.
