Opis:
The composition and effect of heating (60°-110°C) on antioxidative activity in plant oil of rapeseed (RE) and evening primrose (EPE) methanolic extracts were studied. Different phenolics characterized the extracts. The EPE contained about 10-fold higher amount of phenolics (862.2 g/kg extract) than RE; flavanols (683.8 g/kg) and proanthocyanidins (760.1 g/kg) prevailed in the former and phenolic acid derivatives in the latter. The phenolic compounds of both extracts differed with the fenolic acids composition. Sinapic acid prevailed in rapeseed phenolics and protocatechic and gentisic acids in evening primrose phenolics. Both extracts had generally similar antioxidative activity in the temperature ranging from 60°C to 80°C with the oil peroxide values from 3.5 mmol O/kg to 5.0 mmol O/kg compared to the range of 6.0-7.0 mmol O/kg in control oils. The temperatures above 80°C decreased the antioxidative activity of both extracts and even made them to be prooxidative.
Badano skład i wpływ temperatury (60-110°C) na właściwości przeciwutleniające ekstraktów metanolowych nasion rzepaku i wiesiołka. Stwierdzono, że olej tych nasion zawierał tokoferole, głównie α- i y-, w ilości 0,65 g/kg (rzepak) i 0,45 g/kg (wiesiołek) (tab. 1), a ekstrakty metanolowe nasion charakteryzowały się różnymi formami związków fenolowych. W porównaniu z ekstraktem rzepakowym, ekstrakt wiesiołka zawierał około 10-krotnie więcej związków fenolowych, wśród których dominowały flawanole i proantocyjanidyny (tab. 2). Kwasy fenolowe i ich pochodne dominowały w ekstrakcie rzepakowym. Związki fenolowe ekstraktów różniły się składem kwasów fenolowych (rys. 1). Ekstrakty metanolowe obu nasion wykazywały się generalnie taką samą aktywnością przeciwutleniającą (rys. 2). W temperaturze powyżej 80°C aktywność przeciwutleniająca ekstraktów zanikała lub nawet obserwowano przyśpieszenie procesu utleniania oleju roślinnego.

Bio-stimulants are in excessive demand for the sustainable production of floriculture crops. The current investigation was designed to find out the effect of naturally occurring growth stimulant moringa leaf extract (MLE) on the growth, flowering, post-harvest life and corm production of two gladiolus cultivars (cvs.) ‘Rose Supreme’ and ‘White Prosperity’. The research trial was laid out in the factorial arrangement under randomized complete block design. Corms were grown in the open field under local climatic conditions of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Potential of exogenously applied (MLE; 30 times diluted) was evaluated. Treatments including spraying MLE at 3 leaves, 5 leaves, floral bud stage, one combination of these three stages relative to control with no foliar application. Application of natural bio-stimulant produced maximum height in both cvs. against T4. Both cvs. gave maximum stalk length in response to T4. The number of florets spike–1 found the maximum (13) in T1 compared to control T0 which yield (9) florets. Maximum vase life in sucrose solution (13.33 days) was exhibited by T1 for both cvs. while minimum (10 days) in T0. In cultivar comparison earlier spike emergence was observed in ‘White Prosperity’. In ‘Rose Supreme’ maximum corm weight was attained in response to T3 (43.43 g) while minimum (30.33 g) in T0.‘White Prosperity’ produced maximum weight (40.33 g) against T4 whereas minimum by control. The cultivar mean comparison showed the superiority of cormel diameter in ‘Rose Supreme’ (10.93 mm) than ‘White Prosperity’ (9.13 mm). In treatment comparison, T4 produced maximum diameter (12.04 mm) in ‘Rose Supreme’ moreover, T2 induced maximum (9.57 mm) diameter in ‘White Prosperity’.

The present investigation was aimed to study an antiepileptic activity of methanolic extract of Tragia involucrata Linn in mice. In vivo screening models like maximal electroshock-induced convulsion (MES), pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) and picrotoxin (PTX) induced models are used to evaluate the antiepileptic effects of the extracts. The biochemical estimation was done by measuring the lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione (GSH). In the MES induced convulsion, methanolic extract of Tragia involucrata (METI) at high dose (800 mg/kg body weight), showed high significant inhibition on tonic hind limb extension (THLE, 6.83 ±0.30***) and decrease in duration of stupor period (108.7 ±6.53***). In PTZ and PTX induced model METI (400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg) showed significant delay on the onset of convulsions, decreased duration of convulsion and reduced mortality significantly. It also showed significant decrease in brain MDA level in lipid peroxidation profile, and increase in the brain glutathione levels in mice against PTZ induced convulsion. The results confirmed that Tragia involucrata Linn possesses dose dependent antiepileptic activity.

Opis:
The influence of an Uncaria tomentosa extract on the development of Capsicum plants grown in green-house conditions was examined. The effect of the treatment was investigated with microscopic techniques (light and electron microscope) in leaves from three levels of control plants and plants after treatment with the extract added to the soil in doses of 0.4 and 16 mg/ml (200 ml per pot/plant). In control leaves, changes typical of the subsequent phases of normal development were observed: nuclear chromatin became slightly condensed, plastoglobuli of chloroplasts increased in number and size, intragranal thylakoids were somewhat dilatated. In addition to such commonly occurring changes, some symptoms typical of pepper were observed in the ontogenesis of the examined plant: an increased number of spherical electron-dense deposits in vacuoles, an increased number of peroxisomes, the occurrence of numerous paracrystalline structures in chloroplasts of mature leaves, and, starting in mature leaves, expulsion of plastoglobuli from chloroplasts. After the treatment, most of those changes, leading to ageing, occurred much earlier and were more distinct. Chloroplasts, already in the youngest examined leaves, showed dilatation of intergranal thylakoids, which intensified with aging of the leaves and degradation of grana in the oldest leaves. Starch grains decreased in size and number and plastoglobuli became large. Vesiculation of ground cytoplasm in all leaves was stronger than in the control. No paracrystalline structures in chloroplasts or expulsion of plastoglobuli were observed. Another unusual phenomenon was the disappearance of spherical electron-dense deposits in the central vacuoles of cells. Those observations suggested that U. tomentosa extract enhanced the natural ontogenesis of Capsicum annuum leaves, by accelerating and enhancing the typical characteristics of ageing, and, additionally, it changed the structure and physiology of cells.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles by using aqueous mint (Mentha piperita) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var.capitata) extracts and their antibacterial activity. The objective of this study was the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) using leaves of mint and cabbage extracts as the reducing and stabilising agents. The presence of nanoparticles was initially confirmed by the obtained colour and next by transmission electron microscope (TEM). TEM analysis of obtained Ag-NP indicated that their size ranged 5-50 nm for mint and 10-150 nm for cabbage. The antibacterial activity of nanoparticles against pathogenic strains Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica were assessed by evaluation of metabolic activity, using the PrestoBlue and XTT test. The higher inhibition of bacterial viability was observed against Gram negative (E. coli, S. enterica) than Gram positive (S. aureus) bacteria.
Aktywność przeciwbakteryjną nanocząstek przeciwko patogennym szczepom Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica oceniano przez oszacowanie aktywności metabolicznej z użyciem testu PrestoBlue i XTT. Wyższą inhibicję żywotności bakteryjnej obserwowano przeciwko Gram ujemnym (E. coli, S. enterica) niż Gram dodatnim (S. aureus) bakteriom.

The use of preservatives in industrial food production is now common practice. However, there is growing concern among consumers over the harmful effects of common chemical preservatives. As a result, there is increased demand for food that that has undergone little or no processing. In recent years, there has therefore been great interest in finding alternatives to chemical preservatives for use in the meat industry, in the form of natural ingredients. Possible solutions include the use of plant extracts, essential oils or antimicrobial peptides. This paper provides a review of research on the replacement of artificial preservatives in meat products with traditional chemical compounds of natural origin.

Opis:
Paraeucosmetus pallicornis (Dallas) is a new pest in Indonesia which decreases rice production and quality. This pest causes the grains to become flat, hollow, brownish, break easily when milled, and bitter. This research represents the first study on Calotropis gigantea extract as an oviposition deterrent and ovicide against P. pallicornis. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions using four extract concentrations i.e. 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%. The oviposition deterrent effect was determined by counting the number of eggs laid and hatched. Percent reproductive control (PRC) and ovicidal activity was calculated using Tennyson’s formula. Results indicated that all concentrations of C. gigantea leaf extract reduced the number of eggs laid and hatched. The PRC also showed a gradual reduction of oviposition of the P. pallicornis and the ovicidal activity ranged between 86.5 and 100%. The extract concentration which showed the highest potential as an oviposition deterrent and ovicide against P. pallicornis was in the range of 1.0–2.0%. The overall results indicated that C. gigantea leaf extract has the potential to be used as an oviposition deterrent and ovicide against P. pallicornis.

There were tested and screened, in vitro and in vivo, for the first time in Romania, nine respectively six plant extracts manufactured by Hofigal S.A. against Botrytis cinerea (strain Bc 27) isolated from blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.). The highest antibotrytis in vitro activity (efficiency between 80 and 100%) was obtained using the following extracts: Hyssopus officinalis (at 20, 10 and 5%), Satureja hortensis, Allium sativum, Tagetes patula (at 20 and 10%) and Mentha (at 20%). A moderate antibotrytis activity (efficiency between 35.7 and 65.7%) has been noticed for Mentha (at 10 and 5%), Satureja hortensis, Allium sativum and Tagetes patula (at 5%) extracts. The lowest antibotrytis activity or no efficiency was noticed using extracts obtained from Achillea millefolium, Artemisia dracunculus ‘sativa’, Rosmarinus officinalis and Valeriana officinalis even applied at 20%. Based on results obtained in in vitro tests, six plant extracts were tested and screened in vivo, under field conditions at Hofigal S.A. Bucharest. Satureja hortensis, Allium sativum, Hyssopus officinalis, Menthaand Tagetes patula extracts have been efficient in limiting gray mold severity in blackcurrant applied at 10% compared to untreated control. No in vivo activity was registered for Valeriana officinalis extract. Plant extracts with highly efficiency can be recommended as a non-polluting and environmental-friendly alternative (organic horticulture) in the protection of blackcurrant as medicinal crop against grey mould, the most economically important disease in Europe at present.

Na podstawie wyników otrzymanych in vitro przetestowano i dokonano przesiewu in vivo sześciu wyciągów roślinnych w warunkach polowych w Hofigal S.A. Bucharest. Wyciągi Satureja hortensis, Allium sativum, Hyssopus officinalis, Mentha sp. i Tagetes patula byáy skuteczne przy 10% w ograniczaniu nasilenia szarej pleśni w porzeczce w porównaniu z kontrolą.

Opis:
The biotechnical preparations: Biosept Active (based on a grapefruit extract) and BioZell (based on thyme oil) as well as Hypericum perforatum extract, streptomycin solution and fungicide Champion 50WP (active ingredient substance – e.i. 50% copper hydroxide) were investigated for antimicrobial effects against plant pathogenic bacteria: Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae and Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina. The screening was carried out in vitro on three media: Nutrient Agar (NA Difco), Pseudomonas Agar F (Merck) – analogue of King B and 523. In the experiments, the agar plate method was applied. There were no statistically significant differences in the effect of streptomycin and Champion 50WP on the growth inhibition of three bacteria strains for medium 523 and Nutrient Agar and of P. syringae pv. syringae and X. arboricola pv. corylina for medium King B. It was determined that the antibacterial activity of Biosept Active and BioZell biopreparations and H. perforatum extract against Agrobacterium tumefaciens (strain C58), Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (strain 760) and Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina (strain RIPF-x13) were dependent on the strain of pathogen as well as the growth medium used. According to the research results obtained, the Biosept Active preparation and H. perforatum extract demonstrated high bacteriostatic activity against three bacterial strains grown on the Nutrient Agar medium.
