The article assesses the profitability of investment in low-power CHP systems in an agricultural holding. This assessment pertains to three CHP units, it is units powered by a Stirling engine, equipped with a microturbine, and powered by a piston internal combustion engine. The assessment is based on the assumption that all electric power and heat generated will be used by the agricultural holding for its own purposes. For comparison, the results of calculations, including the depreciation of investment in the CHP system, were compared with the costs of purchasing electric power and heat from external providers.
W artykule przedstawiono ocenę opłacalności inwestycji w układy CHP małych mocy w gospodarstwie rolnym. Ocenie tej poddano trzy agregaty kogeneracyjne, tj. agregaty z silnikiem Stirlinga, z mikroturbiną oraz z tłokowym silnikiem spalinowym. Do oceny przyjęto założenie, że cała wytwarzana energia elektryczna i ciepło wykorzystywane będą na potrzeby własne gospodarstwa. Dla porównania wyniki obliczeń, w tym czas amortyzacji inwestycji w układ kogeneracyjny, zestawiono z kosztami zakupu energii elektrycznej i ciepła z zewnątrz

Opis:
To estimate the effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in the internal combustion engine (ICE) by an experiment- calculated method. This contributes to the development of practical recommendations for the further improvement of the engine ring seal designs. Abstract theorems were used when modelling the effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in an ICE. They are based on the fundamental theory of heat engines, thermodynamics and hydraulics. The ICE running was analysed using design-theoretical research methods. The effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in the ICE was established. This creates prerequisites for a more accurate assessment of their sealing capacity and for ways to further improve them. Calculated dependences for computing the blow-by depending on the positional relationship of the rings in the piston grooves were obtained. The dependences of gas escapes on the engine crankshaft speed were obtained, which is especially important for idling modes by which one can judge the dynamic stability of the ring seal and solve the problems of improving its service properties. The calculated dependences for evaluation of the blow-by depending on the positional relationship of the rings in the piston grooves and their respective possible gas flows in the ring seal were obtained for the first time. The practical method for estimating the dynamic stability of the ring seal by decencies of gas escape on the crankshaft rotation speed in ICE was proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a query aimed at assessing the validity of the topic of crankcase explosions prevention in the main marine engines. The study takes into account the engine type, engine manufacturer, ship’s age, accident severity, ship’s location at the time of the incident, and the share of fatal accidents in the analyzed population of crankcase explosions. One of the primary hazards associated with offshore and deep-sea ship operations – and primarily ship power plants – are fires and explosions that result in accidents and incidents with an average frequency of 60 days. This paper discusses the actuality of crankcase explosion hazards in the main propulsion engines of various types of sea vessels. The assessment was made based on the results of a statistical analysis of historical data from 1972 to 2018. The methodology consisted of three stages: (1) a selection query to obtain the source data, (2) analysis of the obtained results (data separation, extraction of additional information, and statistical analysis), (3) synthesis of the obtained information, and drawing conclusions about the numerical indicators describing the statistical distribution of individual events for the given evaluation criteria. The analysis showed that the risk of crankcase explosions affects ships of all ages – both in crosshead (31%) and trunk piston engines (61%) – and that the number of serious incidents (67%) remained constant over the investigated period. Half of all incidents occurred on vessels younger than 15 years old. 58% of explosions took place in engines of the most popular prime movers manufacturers. The probability that a main engine crankcase explosion will result in injury or death is 17.34%.

Samoloty bardzo lekkie i ultralekkie są jednymi ze środków transportu, które mogą zapewnić w przyszłości szybki transport między aglomeracjami miejskimi. Źródłem napędu dla takich samolotów są tłokowe silniki spalinowe. W artykule dokonano analizy różnic konstrukcyjnych między nimi i silnikami samochodowymi. Przedstawiono wybrane silniki dostępne na rynku. Przeanalizowano budowę korpusu i głowicy; układy rozrządu; układy dolotowe, wylotowe oraz zasilania; układy napędowe i mocowanie silnika a także bezpieczeństwo i wymogi prawne. Wykazano istotne różnice między obydwiema konstrukcjami, wynikające z odmiennych wymagań i warunków pracy.
Very light and ultra-light aircraft are among the means of transport that can deliver high-speed transport between urban centers in the future. Propulsion systems for such aircraft use piston internal combustion engines. The article analyzes the structural differences between them and automotive engines. Selected engines that are available on the market have been presented. The construction of the body and head; the timing systems; intake systems, exhaust and power supply; powertrains and engine mounts as well as safety and regulatory requirements were analyzed. There were significant differences between the two structures, resulting from the different requirements and operating conditions.

Research results of novel silumins on pistons for combustion engines, which have high mechanical properties within the range of piston higher operating temperatures, 100-300°C, are presented in the paper. Silumins contain enlarging concentration of the nickel and copper alloy additives up to 4.0, and chrome and molybdenum alloy additives up to 1.0%. Occurrence of given microstructure in piston-silumins results in almost the same values of the coefficient thermal expansion during the heating up to the 300 °C temperature and during the next cooling into the ambient temperature. Small values of the coefficient of expansion of thermal and small differences between values of the coefficient of thermal expansion during heating and cooling enable on application of small values of working clearances between piston and the cylinder liner. As a consequence they make possible, the low exhaust emission level, and the low noise level. The pistons from alloys with small values ofthe coefficient of thermal expansion, small differences of this coefficient during heating and cooling are novel aspects presented in paper. Research results of strength and metallographic parameters, research results of the coefficient of thermal expansion, comparative engine research results are represented in the paper. In particular representative chemical components for a standard alloy and novel alloy, mechanical properties investigated alloys after solution heat treatment, wear resistance of novel alloy compared with two cast irons, ATD curves, fibrous construction, silicon construction, microstructure of novel alloy, courses of changes of the coefficient of thermal expansion in the function of the temperature during heating and cooling are presented in the paper.

The article presents a combined system of a large power ship power plant. The system consists of a piston internal combustion engine and the steam turbine system which utilises the energy transported with the exhaust gas leaving the internal combustion engine. The analysed variant of the combined cycle includes a Diesel engine and a steam turbine with a single-pressure waste-heat boiler. The numerical calculations were performed for two low-speed internal combustion engines made by Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbo, each of an approximate power output of 54 MW. The assumptions and limits which were used in the calculations done using a specially worked out code are included. The energy optimisation of the entire combined ship power plant was done taking into account only the thermodynamic point of view, leaving aside the technical and economic aspects.
W artykule przedstawiono układ kombinowany siłowni okrętowej dużej mocy. Składa się on z silnika spalinowego tłokowego i skojarzonego z nim układu turbiny parowej, wykorzystującego energię zawartą w spalinach wylotowych silnika spalinowego. Rozpatrzono tylko wariant obiegu kombinowanego silnik Diesla – turbina parowa, z kotłem utylizacyjnym jednociśnieniowym. Podano założenia i ograniczenia oraz wyniki ob-liczeń rozpatrywanego układu z opracowanego programu komputerowego. Optymalizację energetyczną całej kombinowanej siłowni okrętowej przeprowadzono tylko z punktu termodynamicznego. Nie zajmowano się analizą techniczno-ekonomiczną. Obliczenia numeryczne wykonano dla silników spalinowych wolnoobrotowych firmy Wärtsilä oraz MAN Diesel & Turbo o mocy około 54 MW.

This article presents the results of a study of an alternative method for reducing friction losses in the cylinder-piston group of internal combustion engines based on an experimental installation, taking into account changes in the real state of the working surfaces of the mating parts of the piston ring-cylinder pair depending on the operating time. The factors with a progressive effect on the operation of engine friction units as they wear out are studied, and the degree of their influence on wear is estimated. A model of the friction unit of a cylinder-piston group (piston-piston ring pair) of an internal combustion engine based on a solid antifriction material operating without the use of a lubricating fluid is developed and investigated. Comparative results of determining the wear indicators of sealing rings by various methods of wear control are presented. A method for predicting the resource and the real state of the engine is proposed.

The paper presents a new method for diagnosing internal combustion engines with automatic ignition in traction conditions. Its substance involves determination of engine torque on the basis of recording of acceleration in road conditions. Extensive preliminary and primary experimental research has been conducted. Three variants of the internal combustion engine diagnostic model have been developed using a trivalent evaluation of states. Algorithms have been proposed to control a state and location of engine defects. The new method has been verified in traction conditions. A probability of a correct diagnosis of internal combustion engine is 0.85 ÷ 1.
W pracy przedstawiono nową metodę diagnozowania silnika spalinowego o ZS w warunkach trakcyjnych. Istota polega na wyznaczeniu momentu obrotowego silnika na podstawie rejestracji przyspieszenia w warunkach drogowych. Wykonano obszerne wstępne i zasadnicze badania eksperymentalne. Opracowano trzy warianty modelu diagnostycznego silnika spalinowego, z wykorzystaniem trójwartościowej oceny stanów. Zaproponowano algorytmy kontroli stanu i lokalizacji uszkodzeń silnika. Zweryfikowano nową metodę w warunkach trakcyjnych. Prawdopodobieństwo poprawnej diagnozy silnika spalinowego wynosi 0,85 ÷ 1.

In this paper, the results of modeling of the burning process in the piston engines whose working process is realized on the basis of various conceptual approaches are presented: in diesel with direct injection of the fuel; in a gas engine with spark ignition; and in a two-fuel engine (in the gas-diesel), where the mixture of natural gas and air ignites with the help of the fuse dose of the diesel fuel. The models of burning based on the different in-principle approaches are analyzed and used. Verification of the models is performed by a comparison of the results of modeling with the experimental diagrams. The specific values of the empirical coefficients, used in modeling of the burning proces in the engines under study, are determined. The practical recommendations on the choice of the burning model depending on the working process conception are given.

The two-stroke engines have never acquired the popularity of the four-stroke engines due to their inherent performance limitations. The tasks of many engineering teams were to find the basic causes, which resulted in the inferior performance of these engines. Today’s task is to build a two-stroke engine whose performance could match that of a four-stroke engine in areas of common use. The most typical performance problems of a two-stroke engine are high petrol consumption caused by low efficiency, toxic by-products of combustion being emitted into the atmosphere (caused by oil present in the petrol), and uneven and loud engine noise. The greatest challenge is to achieve a good chamber purge during one stroke in which the fresh fuel mixture flows through the piston-controlled inlet port while at the same time the fumes are being exhausted through the outlet port. This in contrast with the four-stroke engines where the intake and exhaust are each done with two separate strokes. From the energy point of view, the two-stroke engine is not efficient because a certain amount of fresh fuel is being wasted in the exhaust fumes. We propose to replace the piston-controlled cam with the valve-flushed system, which will cause the combustion process to become more efficient. The purpose of this paper is to present various designs of the engine heads and analyse their performance. The goal of this proposal is to choose the best combination of these engine heads in order to achieve the optimum overall engine performance.

Wstęp i cele: Badania modelowe wymagają spełnienia warunku równości odpowiednich liczb podobieństwa. W większości przypadków równoczesne spełnienie warunku równości wszystkich liczb podobieństwa opisujących dane zjawisko nie jest możliwe. Nie wszystkie kryteria mają jednakowe znaczenie w badanym zagadnieniu. Na podstawie analizy i eksperymentów można ustalić które z nich spełniają dominującą rolę. Niestety, tylko dzięki rezygnacji z mało ważnych liczb podobieństwa, jest możliwe zrealizowanie badań. W pracy zaprezentowano przykłady badań silników zrealizowanych przy ograniczonym podobieństwie modelowym. Materiał i metody: Materiał oparto na wykonanych badaniach modelowych. W pracy zastosowano metodę analityczno-doświadczalną. Wyniki: Ustalono współczynniki wymiany ładunku w funkcji ciśnienia przepłukania z zastosowaniem dwóch zestawów cieczy metanol/trójchloroetylen oraz metanol/roztwór wodny. Wniosek: Przedstawione wyniki badań potwierdzają możliwość uzyskania dostatecznie dokładnych informacji dotyczących procesu wymiany ładunku przy niecałkowicie spełnionych warunkach podobieństwa modelowego.
Introduction and aim: Model studies require the fulfilment of the condition of equality of corresponding numbers of similarity. In most cases, simultaneous fulfilment of the condition of equality of all similarities describing a given phenomenon is not possible. Not all criteria are equally relevant in the study. Based on the analysis and experiments one can determine which of them are dominant. Unfortunately, only thanks to the resignation of the little important numbers of similarity, it is possible to carry out research. The paper presents examples of research of engines realized with limited model similarity. Material and methods: The material was based on model studies. An analytical-experimental method has been used in the paper. Results: The load exchange coefficients were calculated as a flushing pressure using two sets of methanol-trichlorethylene liquid and methanol-water solution. Conclusion: The presented results confirm the possibility of obtaining sufficiently detailed information on the process of cargo exchange under incomplete conditions of model similarity.

Certain results of the comparative studies of the high-speed Diesel engine V-12 of the “W” series were presented in the article. The engine was modernised in regard of possibilities to achieve better performances at specific fuel consumption, smaller exhaust emission, smaller scavenge, lower noise and better thermal stability. The subject of this work is the piston cast of novel composite silumin. The development of novel composite silumin (aluminium-silicon alloy), which contains a little more Copper and Nickel, and the introduction of novel alloyed elements, such as Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, increases the strength of the alloy and its thermal stability during successive heating and cooling. The pistons made of this alloy may have a little bigger outside diameter than the pistons made of PA-12 standard alloy, and a smaller clearance between the piston and cylinder liner. The pistons made of standard and novel alloy were mounted successively in the "W" engine. The full load and part load curves were determined. The lubrication oil consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust emission, blow-by and noise were determined too. The article presents the results of the above-mentioned research. The novel composite alloy enables further engine modernization because the engine should operate at higher pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber.

Certain results of the comparative studies of the high-speed Diesel engine V-12 of the “W” series were presented in the article. The engine was modernised in regard of possibilities to achieve better performances at specific fuel consumption, smaller exhaust emission, smaller scavenge, lower noise and better thermal stability. The subject of this work is the piston cast of novel composite silumin. The development of novel composite silumin (aluminium-silicon alloy), which contains a little more Copper and Nickel, and the introduction of novel alloyed elements, such as Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, increases the strength of the alloy and its thermal stability during successive heating and cooling. The pistons made of this alloy may have a little bigger outside diameter than the pistons made of PA-12 standard alloy, and a smaller clearance between the piston and cylinder liner. The pistons made of standard and novel alloy were mounted successively in the "W" engine. The full load and part load curves were determined. The lubrication oil consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust emission, blow-by and noise were determined too. The article presents the results of the above-mentioned research. The novel composite alloy enables further engine modernization because the engine should operate at higher pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber.

The paper presents the requirements to be met by diesel engines and their components, in particular pistons for engines of military vehicles. These requirements are related to the mass of modern military vehicles, which has greatly increased. Materials for the piston should have a good strength properties and low hysteresis of thermal expansion coefficient α across the range of operating temperatures, good resistance to galling, low abrasion, low coefficient of friction and good functional properties. On the clearance of the piston in the cylinder, the coefficient of thermal expansion α and its hysteresis has a decisive influence. The paper includes information on the piston working clearances, the requirements for pistons materials, their chemical composition, standard materials for the forged pistons, for the cast pistons (silumin alloys) and for the composite pistons. The paper presents the changes in coefficient of thermal expansion for the alloy in the raw state and after heat treatment and pistons made of new composite material prior to motor testing and after these tests. The completed new pistons have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and lower hysteresis α, which allows reducing the running piston and cylinder clearances with the resulting effects.

In the task of research and development of internal combustion engines, the strong emphasis is placed on reducing emissions of harmful substances in exhaust gases, which include carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM, PN); while maintaining a high engine performance and, above all, adequate: power, fuel consumption, noise. One of the possibilities to reduce emissions of HC and engine working noise is to reduce the clearance between the piston and the cylinder liner. This is possible only, when the permanent deformations of the piston are reduced, which result from rapid piston temperature changes (thermal shocks). The newly developed composite aluminum alloy is characterized by high strength parameters and low dimensional hysteresis during repeated heating and cooling. The S12-U engine pistons are made of this material, and they had a slightly larger nominal diameter than the standard pistons. They were then mounted in the engine. The engine was tested on a test stand with the modern, accurate measuring equipment. Test results show, that the HC and CO content in the exhaust gas has been reduced, exhaust gas blowby to the crankcase declined, smoke emission was reduced and engine lubricating oil consumption was also reduced. Analysis of test results indicates that this has been achieved, mainly by reducing the clearances between the piston and the cylinder. The article provides detailed test results, mainly in the form of charts, on which one can compare the results, achieved by the engine with new material pistons with results of the same engine, but with the standard pistons.
