Opis:
Natural fibres are attractive as the raw material for developing sound absorber, as they are green, eco-friendly, and health friendly. In this paper, pineapple leaf fibre/epoxy composite is considered in sound absorber development where several values of mechanical pressures were introduced during the fabrication of absorber composite. The results show that the composite can absorb incoming sound wave, where sound absorption coefficients αn > 0.5 are pronounced at mid and high frequencies. It is also found that 23.15 kN/m2 mechanical pressure in composite fabrication is preferred, while higher pressure leads to solid panel rather than sound absorber so that the absorption capability reduces. To extend the absorption towards lower frequency, the composite absorber requires thickness higher than 3 cm, while a thinner absorber is only effective at 1 kHz and above. Additionally, it is confirmed that the Delany-Bazley formulation fails to predict associated absorption behavior of pineapple leaf fibre-based absorber. Meanwhile, a modified Delany-Bazley model discussed in this paper is more useful. It is expected that the model can assist further development of the pineapple leaf composite sound absorber.

A novel feature extraction method has been proposed to improve the accuracy of the pineapple ripeness classification process. The methodology consists of six stages, namely: image acquisition, image pre-processing, color extraction, feature selection, classification and evaluation of results. The red element in the RGB model is selected as the threshold value parameter. The ripeness of pineapples is determined based on the percentage share of yellowish scales visible in images presenting the front and the back side of the fruit. The prototype system is capable of classifying pineap ples into three main groups: unripe, ripe, and fully ripe. The accuracy of 86.05% has been achieved during experiments.

The available range of cut flowers is constantly supplemented with new species and cultivars, and thus recommendations for their vase life are required. Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is an ornamental bulbous plant with huge potential on the cut flower market. This research investigated the effect of different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of NO) on postharvest quality of cut Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy'. Plants grown in the two different production locations (field, plastic tunnel). Cut stems were kept in solution containing 0.1 µmol, 100 µmol and 1mmol SNP. The average vase life of Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' flowers over all treatments was 44.5 days. Flowers held in 100 µmol SNP had longer vase live, greater fresh weight and solution uptake than the control. Flowers harvested from the plastic tunnel had increased fresh weight, stem length and solution uptake than those from the field.

Opis:
Eucomis autumnalis is an attractive ornamental species from the South Africa, commonly used in natural medicine. Plant protection programs, particularly those concerning plants grown for phytotherapeutics, are focused on prophylactic treatments that facilitate a limited use of pesticides negatively affecting the environment. Polysaccharides, such as chitosan and sodium alginate are exemplary non-toxic and biodegradable substances used for hydrogel coatings. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of treating E. autumnalis bulbs with fungicide or coating with natural polysaccharides on the morphological traits and content of minerals in the leaves and bulbs. Prior to planting, the bulbs were divided into three groups: (I) untreated bulbs (control); (II) bulbs treated with Kaptan and Topsin fungicides; (III) bulbs coated with oligochitosan and sodium alginate. Bulb coating was found to exert a stimulating effect on plant height, number and length of leaf, greenness index (SPAD), number of flowers per inflorescence, fresh weight of the aboveground part and fresh weight of bulbs. The leaves and bulbs of plants grown from coated bulbs contained more nitrogen, potassium and boron. Treating the bulbs with fungicides positively affected the number of leaves, greenness index and fresh weight of the aboveground part.

The Erwinia species are well-known pathogens of economic importance in Malaysia causing serious damage to high-value fruit crops that include pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] and papaya (Carica papaya L.).The 16S rRNA sequence using eubacteria fD1 and rP2 primers, identified two bacteria species; Dickeya zeae from pineapple heart rot, and Erwinia mallotivora from papaya dieback. Phylogenetic analysis based on the neighbor-joining method indicated that all the bacterial isolates clustered in their own taxa and formed monophyletic clades. From the pathogenicity test, all isolates of D. zeae and E. mallotivora showed pathogenic reactions on their respective host plants. Genetic variability of these isolates was assessed using repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) fingerprinting. The results indicated interspecies, and intraspecies variation in both species’ isolates. There were more polymorphic bands shown by rep-PCR fingerprints than enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) and BOX- PCRs, however both species’ isolates produced distinguishable banding patterns. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis indicated that all Dickeya and Erwinia isolates from the same species were grouped in the same main cluster. Similarity among the isolates ranged from 77 to 99%. Sequencing of 16S rRNA using eubacteria fD1 and rP2 primers, and rep-PCR fingerprinting revealed diversity among Dickeya and Erwinia isolates. But this method appears to be reliable for discriminating isolates from pineapple heart rot and papaya dieback.

Suppose that P is a finite 2-polyhedron. We prove that there exists a PL surjective map f:Q → P from a fake surface Q with preimages of f either points or arcs or 2-disks. This yields a reduction of the Whitehead asphericity conjecture (which asserts that every subpolyhedron of an aspherical 2-polyhedron is also aspherical) to the case of fake surfaces. Moreover, if the set of points of P having a neighbourhood homeomorphic to the 2-disk is a disjoint union of open 2-disks, and every point of P has an arbitrarily small 2-dimensional neighbourhood, then we may additionally conclude that Q is a special 2-polyhedron.

This study was aimed at determining the optimum yield of bioethanol (as biofuel and industrial chemical) from yam, potato, watermelon and pineapple peels using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl). Results obtained from acid hydrolysis, fermentation and distillation revealed that yam peel gave the highest quantity of glucose (38.7±0.90%) and ethanol (18.40±0.18%) at an acid concentration of 1.5M, watermelon peel equally recorded a highest yield of glucose (18.3±0.50%) and ethanol (8.35±0.14%) at 1.5M. For potato peel, the highest quantity of glucose (33.8±1.10%), and ethanol (18.23±0.04%) was at 2.0M, this concentration (2.0M) was equally the optimum for pineapple peel, the highest glucose concentration and ethanol yield of which was 24.5±0.62% and 11.44±0.29% respectively. Utilizing these agro-wastes for the production of bioethanol provides a means of recycling these biological wastes which are normally prone to rapid microbial spoilage.

Opis:
The shelf life of pineapple is significantly influenced by storage temperature and can be prolonged by maintaining an optimal temperature range of 5-12°C. However, there is still the problem of internal browning (IB) in the long-term storing of fresh harvest at cold temperatures. Postharvest application of 380 μM ABA (Abscisic Acid) to the crown, which is a source of ABA endogenous was found to suppress IB, while the concentration of 95 μM was not effective. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the response of GP3 and MD2 clones to postharvest treatment with the application of 50 mg/L ABA, chitosan and decrowning on the IB severity and other fruit qualities. The experimental design used a Completely Randomized Design with 3 factors of clone (GP3 and MD2), decrowning (crown and crownless), and fruit coating [chitosan 1%, ABA 50 mg/L, ABA + chitosan mix, and control (H2O)]. The fruits were kept at 7oC and observed at 0, 3, 6, 9, 16, 23, 30, and 37 days. The results showed that MD2 was significantly lower IB than GP3 and IB severity negatively correlated with ascorbic acid (AsA) content. MD2 had lower fruit weight loss (FWL) and skin dehydration (SD), higher AsA, soluble solid content (SSC), and SSC/titratable acidity (STA) ratios compared to GP3. The crown + ABA treatment decreased the IB severity of GP3, with a level of 0.75% after 37 days which was lower than crown + H2O by 9.17% and crownless + H2O by 8.42%. ABA treatment also showed higher SD and FWL, while AsA, SSC, TA, and STA were not different from the control.

Synthesized growth regulators may cause a negative impact on the environment so the use of natural bio-stimulators in horticulture is becoming more popular. Some biopolymers can have a stimulating influence on the growth and development of plants. In addition, polymers can be used to form hydrogel coatings on the surface of plant organs to protect them against the adverse influence of external factors. Eucomis species are widely used in southern African traditional medicine and have a horticultural potential. This study was conducted in order to determine the effect of biopolymer coating of twin-scale cuttings on the yield of Eucomis comosa ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ and ‘Twinkly Stars’ bulblets. For coating of twin-scale cuttings, 1% solution of gellan gum (Phytagel) or 0.5% solution of oligochitosan were used. Coating of twin-scale cuttings in gellan gum had a positive impact on the number and weight of the bulblets. The highest number of roots and maximum root length were observed in bulblets derived from the twin scale cuttings coating in oligochitosan. A comparison of cultivars showed that ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ produced more bulblets with longer roots than ‘Twinkly Stars’.
