Opis:
The effect of chemical modification on mechano-sorptive creep in bending was studied by experimental work. Stakes with 20 × 20 × 400 mm RTL of Portuguese wood species (Pinus pinaster Aiton) modified with 1,3-dimethylol-4,5- dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU), m-methylated melamine resin (MMF), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and amid wax (WA) were measured under asymmetric moistening conditions over a period of 42 days (app. 1000 hours) with stress level (SL) of 12 MPa, according to ENV 1156. The cell wall treatments (DMDHEU and MMF resins) had shown significant reduction of creep (creep factors, kc) when compared to untreated wood under similar conditions. Both types of resins and levels of treatments (different WPG) did not shown significant effects. In the lumen fill treatments, deposit material of TEOS did not affected the creep behaviour (kc); Wax treatment was shown a particular compliance of creep due to avoid exchange moisture (by the hydrophobic effect of wax). The anti-creep efficiency (ACE) correlated better than other mechanical or physical properties imparted by the modification process.

Opis:
The supply of raw material is the result of the logistical link between the actions of forest and wood companies. Research on sustainable development for this area of activity results from cooperation between representatives of forests, transport companies and wood industry companies. The rationale for the undertaken projects is determined by the level of interference of transport activities and taking into account its impact on the environment and social needs. The aim of the study was to verify the process of transport planning and its implementation in an economically and environmentally effective way, in terms of sustainable material flows. The results present cases of trade in coniferous raw wood material in the area of medium−sized plants, with round wood processing in the range from 30 to 100 thousand m3. The role of transport requirements in this trade was assessed, i.e. optimal use of available transport routes, vehicle loading and collection from forest areas. The paper presents the dependence of the flow of coniferous wood from forests to selected groups of sawmill customers on the distance and periodicity of demand in particular processing phases. For a properly functioning sustainable supply chain it is necessary to maintain a balance between economic aspects and environmental values. When undertaking logistic activities in the scope of raw material supplies, it is necessary to approach the indicated issues comprehensively

Correlation between the share of latewood and the density of sawn timber from the Silesian Forestry Region. The paper describes the results of density measurements and the share of latewood in pine wood samples (Pinus sylvestris L.) from the Silesian Forestry Region in Poland. The samples were obtained from sawn timber from different kinds of log: butt, middle and top. The place from which the timber was obtained (three different log kinds) was taken into account when assessing the correlation between wood density and the share of latewood.

Opis:
Adhesives for gluing thermally modified wood were analyzed. The methods for conducting experimental studies to determine the strength of adhesive joints of thermally modified ash wood and unmodified pine wood, using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc)-based adhesives of durability class D4 were described. According to the results of experimental studies based on the proposed methodology, it was established that the strength of adhesive joints of thermally modified ash wood and unmodified pine wood stretched along the fibers after the first stage of testing is 6.21 MPa, after the second stage 4.56 MPa, and after the third stage 3.90 MPa. The average strength of the adhesive joints of the control specimens is 7.12 MPa. According to the obtained research results, the nature of destruction of the adhesive joints of thermally modified ash wood and unmodified pine wood was determined depending on the test stage. The greatest destruction occurred on the adhesive line, and the least on the pine wood. It was assumed theoretically that during the thermal modification of ash wood, hemicellulose decomposes and acetic acid is released, leading to the formation of furfural, which impairs wood surface wetting and affects the adhesive strength of PVA-based adhesive joints.

Opis:
The pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD). This nematode is considered to be an indigenous to North America and was introduced to Japan in the late 19th century. Subsequently, it has spread throughout Japan and in many other countries, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. In 1999, B. xylophilus was discovered in Portugal, and in 2008 in Spain. So far the studies have revealed that the pathogenicity of B. xylophilus varies between different isolates. The conducted study compared the pathogenicity of five isolates of B. xylophilus, originating from different parts of Japan, to 3-year-old Pinus sylvestris, and their ability to reproduce in the seedlings. The results revealed diverse virulence of B. xylophilus resulting in plant mortality. Three isolates S10, Ka4, and T4 caused 100% mortality of plants within three months while at the same time, the other two isolates, C14-5 and OKD-1 did not cause any disease symptoms on plants. After seven months, some dieback occurred on two seedlings, but similar symptoms were also found on the control plant. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was found between nematode virulence and the number of nematodes reproducing on pine seedlings.

The subject of this paper is testing the hardness of two-layer floor materials with top layer made of ash wood in tangential cut, and bottom layer made of pine wood, radial cut, with cross wood fibre layout in both layers. Tests were carried out for top layer thickness 6.6 mm, 4.0 mm and 2.0 mm. Strong correlations were noticed between the hardness of floor elements and the density of the top layer for each thickness variant. Overall statistically significant influence of bottom layer density on the hardness of two-layer floor elements was observed in samples whose top layer was 2.0 mm thick.

This paper examines the effect of selected factors on the wood bonded joint strength. The structural factor under scrutiny was the geometry of the surface area; however, other major dimensions of adherends were compared as well. The tests were performed on 6 joint types: butt, v-shaped, interlocking, scarf, tongue & groove, and single lap joints, which were formed on two types of substrate materials – pine and oak wood, and adhesively bonded. The joints were bonded with Prefere 6312 wood adhesive and Loctite 3430 two-component epoxy adhesive. Strength testing of the joints was performed on Zwick/Roell Z150 material testing machine, according to DIN EN 1465 standard. The results obtained from the tests indicate that bonded joints of oak wood exhibit higher strength properties than those of pine wood adherends, which was confirmed in nearly all strength tests.

Opis:
At the Koźmin Las site, in Central Poland, in the middle section of the Warta River valley, a series of well-preserved tree trunks and in situ stumps, as well as organic deposits, have been found. The tree remains are dated back to the period between 13,000–12,600 cal BP, i.e. to the Alleröd/Younger Dryas transition. The forest consisted predominantly of pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) of a maximum age of approx. 140 years and an average age of 68 years, and the river valley floor was overgrown. The forest was destroyed ca. 12,600 cal BP by deteriorating hydrological conditions or a sudden catastrophic event. The aim of the study was to assess the degree of degradation in terms of selected macroscopic, physical and chemical properties of a subfossil pine log. On this basis, a conservation process was developed, using aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycols (PEG) with varying concentrations of low- and high-molecular polymers. Treated and dried samples were comparedin terms of their tangential and radial dimensional stability, as well as their hygroscopic properties.

Opis:
Investigations were carried out at timber storage sites (depots) on large-sized pine (110 pieces) and beech (130 pieces) wood from three forest districts within the territory of the Regional Directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) of Łódź, Lublin and Kraków. As a result of a comparison of both classification systems, it was proved that in the case of pine wood classified according to EU norms, the shares of the number of pieces and volume in classes B and C decreased, whereas they increased in class D when compared with Polish classification. Analogically, in the case of beech wood, a decrease in the share of the number of pieces and volume in classes A, B and D, and an increase in class C were recorded. Among the most common defects that influence the classification of both sorts of wood, open and burl knots as well as curvatures are recognised, while in the case of beech wood, shakes and galls (disease T stains) are encountered. The results of the classification determined differences in the wood value. According to the pricelists for wood standing in forest districts where the raw wood under investigation originated, it was established that the value of the pine wood classified according to the EU norm decreased by ca. 7.6% when compared with the value estimated using the Polish norm. The value of the beech wood was nearly identical in both cases, which was mainly due to the higher share of wood of class C and lower share of class D upon applying the EU standards, in comparison with the Polish classification system.

Opis:
Pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) (Aphelenchida: Parasitaphelencidae) is one of the most harmful agents in coniferous forests. The most important vectors of pine wood nematode are considered to be some Monochamus species (Col.: Cerambycidae), which had been forest insects with secondary importance before the appearance of B. xy- lophilus. However, the continuous spreading of the nematode has changed this status and necessitated detailed biological and climatological investigation of the main European vec- tor, Monochamus galloprovincialis. The potential distribution area of M. galloprovincialis involves those areas where the risk of the appearance of pine wood nematode B. xylophilus is significant. The main objective of our analysis was to obtain information about the in- fluencing effects of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the potential European range of B. xylophilus and its vector species M. galloprovincialis based on the connection between the mean temperature of July in Europe, the distribution of day-degrees of the vector and the NAO index. Our assessment was based on fundamental biological constants of the nematode and the cerambycid pest as well as the ECMWF ERA5 Global Atmospheric Rea- nalysis dataset. Our hypothesis was built on the fact that the monthly mean temperature had to exceed 20°C in the interest of an efficient expansion of the nematode. In addition, the threshold temperature of the vector involved in the calculations was 12.17°C, while the accumulated day-degree (DD) had to exceed the annual and biennial 370.57°DD for univoltine and semivoltine development, respectively. Our finding that a connection could be found between a mean temperature in July above 20°C and NAO as well as between the accumulated day-degrees and NAO can be the basis for further investigations for a reliable method to forecast the expansion of pine wood nematode and its vector species in a given year.
