Opis:
Objectives: Back pain in Air Force fast jet pilots has been studied by several air forces and found to be relatively common. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and degree of the pain intensity in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, subjective risk factors and their effect on the pilots' performance while flying high maneuver aircrafts and the consequences for cognitive deficiencies. Material and Methods: The study was designed as a retrospective, anonymous questionnaire survey, collecting data on the age, aircraft type, flying hours, pain characteristics, physical activity, etc. The study was participated by 94 pilots aged 28-45 years (mean age: 35.9±3.3 years), actively flying fast jet aircrafts Su-22, Mig-29 and F-16. The estimates regarding the level of the subjective back pain were established using visual analogue scales (VAS). Results: The values of the Cochran and Cox T-test for heterogeneous variances are as follows: for the total number of flying hours: F = 2.53, p = 0.0145, for the pilot's age: F = 3.15, p = 0.003, and for the BMI factor F = 2.73, p = 0.008. Conclusions: Our questionnaire survey showed a significant problem regarding spinal conditions in high performance aircraft pilots. The determination of the risk factors may lead to solving this problem and help eliminate the effect of the unfavorable environment on piloting jet aircrafts. Experiencing back pain during the flight might influence the mission performance and flight safety. The costs of pilots education are enormous and inability to fly, or even disability, leads to considerable economic loss. More research on specific prevention strategies is warranted in order to improve the in-flight working environment of fighter pilots.

Opis:
Objectives: Low back pain in pilots of military helicopters is widely discussed in the world literature. Vibrations and improper seat configuration cause that cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine might be exposed to overloading. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and intensity of pain in the spine as well as to identify subjective risk factors of back pain and its effect on the pilot’s actions while flying a helicopter. Materials and Methods: 112 pilots, aged 25−56 years (mean age: 34.8±6.3 years), actively flying helicopters, participated in the questionnaire survey. The questionnaire containing five groups of questions, elaborated by the authors, was used. Results: 70% of the pilots reported pain complaints. Pain was localized in different parts of the spine. Uncomfortable body posture during prolonged flights resulting from the lack of lumbar support exerted the highest effect on pain provocation. Conclusions: This questionnaire survey enabled to determine the prevalence of pain, its type and intensity. Knowledge on low back pain imposes the necessity to eliminate the negative environmental effect on helicopter pilotage. Elimination of risk factors is possible through appropriate physical exercises and adjustment of pilots’ seats. The authors plan to conduct – in the future – detailed annual examinations among pilots with back pain and, based on the results, to elaborate a prophylactic program containing simple forms of isometric and isotonic training involving paravertebral and deep abdominal muscles designed specifically for pilots of military helicopters.

Opis:
Objectives For the purpose of flight safety military aircrew must be healthy. P-wave dispersion (PWD) is the p-wave length difference in an electrocardiographic (ECG) examination and represents the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. In the study we aimed at investigating PWD in healthy military aircrew who reported for periodical examinations. Material and Methods Seventy-five asymptomatic military aircrew were enrolled in the study. All the subjects underwent physical, radiologic and biochemical examinations, and a 12-lead electrocardiography. P-wave dispersions were calculated. Results The mean age of the study participants was 36.15±8.97 years and the mean p-wave duration was 100.8±12 ms in the whole group. Forty-seven subjects were non-pilot aircrew, and 28 were pilots. Thirteen study subjects were serving in jets, 49 in helicopters, and 13 were transport aircraft pilots. Thirty-six of the helicopter and 11 of the transport aircraft aircrew were non-pilot aircrew. P-wave dispersion was the lowest in the transport aircraft aircrew, and the highest in jet pilots. P-wave dispersions were similar in the pilots and non-pilot aircrew. Twenty-three study subjects were overweight, 19 had thyroiditis, 26 had hepatosteatosis, 4 had hyperbilirubinemia, 2 had hypertension, and 5 had hyperlipidemia. The PWD was significantly associated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Serum uric acid levels were associated with p-wave durations. Serum TSH levels were the most important predictor of PWD. Conclusions When TSH levels were associated with PWD, uric acid levels were associated with p-wave duration in the military aircrew. The jet pilots had higher PWDs. These findings reveal that military jet pilots may have a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation, and PWD should be recorded during periodical examinations.

Opis:
Objectives The study analyzed the effectiveness of military pilots’ behavior under the influence of false horizon illusion – a false perception of the real horizon. It was assumed that visual illusion tends to cause spatial disorientation (SD). The question was asked which orientation of the sloping cloud (right/left) would have a bigger impact on SD. The effectiveness of the flight profile performance under the influence of visual illusion was analyzed in the context of the field dependence (FD), field independence (FI) or field intermediate dependence (FINT) of perception, the effectiveness of attention and operational memory. Material and Methods The study covered 66 pilots. A flight simulator was used as a measure of effectiveness in performing the flight profile in spatial disorientation conditions. The effectiveness of attention and working memory was diagnosed using 4 computer tasks. Results It was revealed that the right sloping cloud (compared to the left sloping cloud) had a greater impact on military pilots’ behavior. The cognitive style distinguishes the accuracy of the flight profile performance from the inclined cloud pointing to the right. The comparisons showed significant differences between the FI and FD pilot groups. All the pilots demonstrated the right-sided asymmetry of the flight rate. While performing tasks on the simulator, the FI pilots were characterized by a more stable rate than the FINT pilots. Conclusions A general conclusion is that the “correct falling cloud” had a greater impact on pilots’ behavior. The presented results confirm the hypothesis that susceptibility to visual illusions is significantly increased in the pilots characterized by field dependence while the pilots with the FINT style of perception are characterized by a greater variability of the flight rate. Cel badań. Celem badań jest analiza dyskursu dotyczącego ryzyka, jaki jest prowadzony na internetowej grupie dyskusyjnej paralotniarzy pl.rec.paralotnie. Materiał i metody. Materiał badawczy stanowią wpisy paralotniarzy – uczestników grupy dyskusyjnej – poruszających temat ryzyka związanego z uprawianiem paralotniarstwa. Dokonano analizy jakościowej wybranych 100 wpisów zawierających słowa „ryzyko” i „ryzyka”. Wyniki. Wypowiedzi pogrupowano w trzech kategoriach ryzyka: funkcjonalne-psychospołeczne, stymulacyjne-instrumentalne i indywidualne-sprzętowe-środowiskowe. Dodatkowo wyróżniono cztery główne i cztery szczegółowe kategorie opinii dotyczących ryzyka: percepcja i akceptacja ryzyka, ryzyko zawodnicze, czynniki ryzyka – sprzęt, czynniki ryzyka – środowisko – warunki atmosferyczne, czynniki ryzyka – środowisko – warunki terenowe, czynnik ludzki i zarządzanie ryzykiem. Wnioski. Zdecydowana większość wpisów na grupie pl.rec.paralotnie dotyczy ryzyka funkcjonalnego związanego z awarią sprzętu, warunkami atmosferycznymi, terenowymi i czynnikiem ludzkim.
Background. Risk is a possibility, a probability, or a danger that something will happen differently than expected. Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders. The aim of the research is to analyze the risk discourse present on the paragliders’ pilots forum pl.rec.paralotnie. Material and methods. The research material consists of entries of paragliders’ pilots – participants of the discussion forum pl.rec.paralotnie – regarding the risk associated with practicing paragliding. A qualitative analysis of selected 100 entries containing the words “risk” and “risks” was made. A netographic method was applied. Qualitative analysis were performed using the NVivo 11 software. Results. In the analysis and coding process, the statements were grouped into three risk categories: functional-psychosocial, stimulatory-instrumental and individual- equipment-environmental. As a result of subsequent coding, four main and four detailed categories of risk categories were received: risk perception and acceptance, competition risk, risk factors – equipment, risk factors – environment – atmospheric conditions, risk factors – environment – terrain conditions, human factor, and risk management. Conclusions. The vast majority of entries on the pl.rec.paralotnie forum concern functional risk related to equipment failure, weather conditions, terrain conditions and human factor. The psychosocial risk applies almost exclusively to competitors taking part in paragliding competitions. In a few cases it concerns people seeking recognition among viewers watching risky maneuvers. Forum participants mainly point to individual (rather than hardware or environmental) risk. They believe that the equipment and environmental risks

Higher military education is nowadays undergoing numerous changes due to the “Concept of the development of higher military education in 2017-2026” adopted in 2016. The following article looks at the planned modifications in the context of training aviation personnel for the needs of the Air Force. The “Training military pilots” section discusses the process of training candidates to be military pilots, the main problems related to it as well as the nature of the system of training and educating the cadets of the Polish Air Force University. The considerations in the next section of the article concern the selection of candidates for military pilots. The recruitment, consisting of several stages, aims to efficiently identify the best candidates for service in aviation. The screening training, the aim of which is to check the predispositions of candidates for serving as pilots, is a novelty in this process. The chapter “Selection” looks at the solutions applied so far in the School of Eaglets, and also analyses the benefits of the new recruitment method. The final sections of the article concern the profile of the graduates of the Polish Air Force University, their target skills and the development plans of the University in the face of the challenges posed.

In recent years, container ships have had to transport more and more goods due to constantly growing demand. Therefore, the container ships for carrying these goods are growing in size, while the harbors fall short in adapting to these changes. As a result, the berthing of these container ships in harbors has become more challenging for harbor pilots. In this work, we identify problems and risks with which pilots are confronted during the berthing process. First, we analyzed approximately 1500 accident reports from six different transportation safety authorities and identified their major causes. Second, we conducted an ethnographic study with harbor pilots in Hamburg to observe their actions. Third, we gained more specific insights on pilots environments and communications through an online survey of 30 harbor pilots from different European countries. We conclude our work with recommendations on how to reduce problems and risks during berthing of container vessels.

Opis:
Nawiązując do koncepcji technik Siebie Michela Foucaulta i antropotechniki Petera Sloterdijka, w artykule przedstawiono propozycję modelu interpretacji literackich zjawisk konwersyjnych. Perspektywa „antropotechniczna” nie wyklucza umieszczania doświadczenia konwersji podmiotu w kontekstach metafizycznych, lecz w wielu przypadkach pozwala przekroczyć religijny horyzont lektury, umożliwiając uwzględnienie szerszego niż w przypadku postsekularyzmu spektrum zjawisk literackich. Wykorzystując wspomniany model, procesy konwersji ukazano na przykładzie kilku współczesnych (wydanych po 2009 roku) polskich utworów prozatorskich, w szczególności dokonując poszerzonej interpretacji powieści Pióropusz Mariana Pilota. U podstaw wewnętrznej przemiany bohaterów tych narracji stoi doświadczenie ograniczoności i utraty.
Referring to the concept of Michel Foucault’s technologies of self and Peter Sloterdijk’s anthropotechnics, the article presents a proposal for an interpretative model of literary conversion phenomena. The “anthropotechnical” perspective does not exclude placing the experience of the subject’s conversion in metaphysical contexts, but in many cases it allows to transcend the religious horizon of reading. Adopting such a perspective allows us to perceive conversion processes in a wider literary spectrum than in the case of postsecular interpretations. Using the aforementioned model, the conversion processes were presented on the example of several contemporary (published after 2009) Polish prose works, particularly in an extended interpretation of the novel Pióropusz (War Bonnet) by Marian Pilot. In these narratives, the conversion of the characters is based on experiences of limitedness and loss.

Opis:
This article diagnoses and evaluates the process of selecting and preparing candidates for military pilots in Poland. The presented changes in the screening training system are to help with understanding the principles of organizing an effective system of recruitment and selection of military pilots at present. It also indicates directions for improvement. The organization of initial flight screening contributes to improving the efficiency of flight training and can serve as a model for use by flight training systems in other countries. The purpose of the article is to diagnose and evaluate recruitment and selection of candidates for military pilots in Polish Armed Forces. The problem that the author addresses is expressed in the following question: in what directions should the current solutions in the selection and training of candidates for military pilots, be improved in order to reduce the attrition rate at subsequent stages of flight training in the future? The research has been conducted at the Military University of Aviation using case study methods. The theoretical research methods, such as analysis and synthesis of information contained in literature and source materials, conclusions and comparison were used to develop the article. In order to confirm the conclusions drawn with the use of theoretical methods, an empirical method was used, which consisted in examining the opinions with the use of expert interviews. Experts were selected from the group of commanders of training units and military pilots involved in selection training, who had an impact on the applicable aviation training and recruitment system in Polish Armed Forces. The results shows main directions of military pilots initial flight screening improvement.
