    The article examines the question of the authorship and generic classification of La Seine et ses bords (1836). This work is commonly misattributed to Charles Nodier, but the most likely author is Alexandre Mure de Pélanne, who in 1835 published a similar essay on the Saône River. The comparison of both works shows a clear difference in their perspectives: La Saône et ses bords, with an emphasis on the historical context, meets the generic criteria of album pittoresque (picturesque album), whereas a focus on topography and hydrology of La Seine et ses bords brings it closer to the genre of mémoire géographique (geographical memoir). The scientific scope of La Seine et ses bords also distinguishes it from Nodier’s and Taylor’s Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l’ancienne France, the most famous cycle of Romantic journeys through France.

    Opis:
    The aim of the present article is to show that Richard Payne Knight promotes the same style in aesthetics that was first described by William Gilpin in his theory of the picturesque, but that Knight also transforms the Gilpinian conception as he sets it in the context of the contemporary scientific thought. Gilpin enuerated characteristic features of the picturesque style, among which he mentions richness of colour and variegated chiaroscuro modeling. Variety of hues was also postulated by Knight. Knight referred to the Newtonian atomistic theory of colours and Newton’s molecular physiology of visual perception to account for man’s preference of the aforesaid assemblages of colours.

    The main inspiration for the article dedicated to aesthetics of picturesqueness in Jane Austen’s novels is W. J. T. Mitchell’s Introduction in Landscape and Power, where he defines a landscape not as a noun, but as a verb. In this context, this term becomes a cultural medium, by which the new political and social meanings of the epoch are transmitted and sanctioned. Selected parts of Austen’s works, in which long descriptions of nature have been replaced by dialogues about a landscape as an artistic, picturesque object, will allow to describe the consequences of the reconceptualization of the nature within English theory of aesthetics.

    The paper discusses specific literary form of the cultural prefiguration of spatial perception – seeing landscapes and other spaces through the filter of one’s experience of art. In the examined texts by Jacek Dehnel’s and in Julia Hartwig’s poems spaces perceived by the subject are juxtaposed and correlated with the afterimages of masterpiece paintings or memorable and identifiable styles of various artists.

    This paper sets out to interpret the phrase ‘the city landscape’. Beginning with landscape aesthetics based on two categories — the picturesque and the sublime — the author attempts to demonstrate that a city can be interpreted in terms of a cultural landscape. This necessitates a re‑interpretation of the category of the sublime, whereby, through references to Edmund Burke, Theodor W. Adorno and Arnold Berleant, the sublime assumes the nature of a category which determines the existential situation of a person in the world. Here, the sublime provides people with an impulse to undertake efforts to fashion their surroundings and forge the essence of the living world. As such, the sublime also becomes a category that promotes social activities aimed at improving the quality of life in a city, such as the activities of ‘urban gardeners’.

    Eduard Petzold był XIX-wiecznym architektem krajobrazu, autorem licznych założeń parkowych i ogrodowych, utrzymanych w nurcie malowniczym stylu krajobrazowego. Jego twórczość, mimo jej wartości, jest mało znana. Jego nazwisko najczęściej kojarzy się z osobą księcia Hermanna von Pückler-Muskau, twórcy Parku Mużakowskiego, gdzie Petzold uczył się zawodu. Choć życie zawodowe projektanta było przez wiele lat związane z tym właśnie parkiem, stworzył on również wiele innych założeń m.in. na terenie dzisiejszych Niemiec, Polski, Holandii, a także Austrii, Czech, Bułgarii i Turcji. W jego twórczości odnaleźć można zarówno projekty dla osób prywatnych (w tym założenia parkowe przy rezydencjach oraz ogrody przywillowe), jak i parki miejskie. Petzoldowi przypisuje się autorstwo aż 174 projektów. Do tej pory potwierdzono realizację około 90 z nich. Wiele założeń parkowych i ogrodowych Petzolda nie zostało do tej pory zbadanych. Dotyczy to szczególnie tych zlokalizowanych na terenie Śląska. Istnieje pilna potrzeba przeprowadzenia badań śląskiej twórczości tego architekta krajobrazu, co pozwoliłoby na rewaloryzację stworzonych przez niego założeń oraz przywrócenie należnego mu miejsca w dziejach sztuki ogrodowej.
    Eduard Petzold was a 19th century landscape architect, author of numerous park and garden facilities referring to the picturesque trend of the landscape style. His works, despite their value, are little-known. His name is most frequently associated with Count Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, creator of the Muskau Park, where Petzold learned his craft. Although the designer’s professional life was for many years related to this park, he also created many other facilities, among others in today’s Germany, Poland, Netherlands, as well as Austria, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Turkey. His works include both facilities designed for private persons (such as mansion parks or villa gardens), and municipal parks. Petzold is considered the author of 174 projects. It has been confirmed that around 90 of them have been accomplished. Many of Petzold’s park and garden facilities have not been studied so far. It particularly concerns the ones located in Silesia. There is an urgent need to research the Silesian works of this landscape architect, which would allow revalorizing the facilities he created and restoring his position in the history of garden art.

    On the historical and cultural plane, ruins are a lasting element of our landscape. The attitude towards ruins evolved, yet eventually, the 18th and 19th century “cult of ru-ins” allowed them to be perceived from the perspective of aesthetics, which, associating ruins with the category of the picturesque and the sublime, rendered a new meaning to them. The principal thesis of the article rests on the assumption that the discovery of ruins was possible due to the recognition of the landscape’s aesthetic dimension, while their essence lies in their permeation into the world of nature, which allows them to live a natural time.

    „Picturesque geography” is an original expression of Wacław Nałkowski, which probably has no counterpart in the whole history of geographical thought. It clearly shows Nałkowski’s belief that the materials utilized in the process of education should have a beautiful shape. This is also a very convincing expression of his romantic sensibility and the testimony of his great literary talent. Romantic aspects in works of Nałkowski are thought to be very important, since geography is a field which was founded as a modern science, and was established as an academic discipline just in the era of Romanticism. Despite this, most of the authors perceive Nałkowski mainly as an outstanding representative of positivism – the philosophy derived directly from the Enlightenment, which in many respects is the opposite of Romanticism. The article presents the „picturesque geography” concept against the background of contemporary discussions concerning the aesthetic education.
