Opis:
Phytoplankton communities have long been used as water quality indicators within environmental policies. This has fostered the development of national and international phytoplankton monitoring programs, but these networks are subject to sources of uncertainty due to laboratory issues. Nevertheless, studies regarding the interference associated with these aspects are not well-documented. Hence, a long time series (2003–2015) from the Basque continental shelf (southeastern Bay of Biscay) was analyzed to evaluate the uncertainty given by laboratory strategies when studying phytoplankton variability. Variability in phytoplankton communities was explained not only by environmental conditions but also by changes in fixatives (glutaraldehyde and acidic Lugol's solution) and laboratory staff. Based on Bray-Curtis distances, phytoplankton assemblages were found to be significantly dissimilar according to the effect of changes in the specialist handling the sample and the employed fixative. The pair-wise permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed significant differences between the two fixatives utilized and also between the three taxonomists involved. Thus, laboratory-related effects should be considered in the study of phytoplankton time series.

This study describes the phytoplankton community in sheltered euhaline waters of the Basque coast (southeastern Bay of Biscay). Phytoplankton composition, cell size, abundance, biomass and the presence of potentially toxic taxa, together with chlorophyll a, nutrients and hydrographic and optical conditions were measured, from August 2016 to August 2017, in the Mutriku port, with the main aim of assessing the suitability of the phytoplankton community as a food resource for bivalves. The water column in Mutriku showed the typical environmental conditions of Basque marine waters, with no significant nutrient enrichment caused by anthropogenic pressures. Haptophytes represented the greatest contribution to cell abundance (31—47%), and diatoms were the dominant group in terms of biomass (52—79%), which could favour mussel growth due to their high fatty acid content. In addition, the size structure of the phytoplankton community was suitable for mussel ingestion, since the predominant cell size was 2—20 μm. Regarding toxic phytoplankton, the genera that pose a risk for human health and those that affect negatively mussel physiology and survival were considered. Altogether, ten toxic phytoplankton taxa were identified, contributing in less than 5% to the total cell abundance of Mutriku. However, median chlorophyll a concentration was low (0.5 μg L−1), reflecting the oligotrophic conditions of the area. Therefore, even if the composition of the phytoplankton community could be favourable for bivalve aquaculture, biomass values are low compared to other zones of bivalve production.

Opis:
Phytoplankton community structure was studied from 2002 to 2016 in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea) in the context of the 2010 shift in its population, as well as the reason for this shift and its environmental impact. This evident shift was indicated by Multidimensional Scaling at the Bray Curtis similarity level of 31%. Before 2010, the primary components of phytoplankton were Cyanobacteria (up to 98% of the biomass, October 2007) and Chlorophyta (40%, July 2002). After 2010, the contribution of Cyanobacteria considerably decreased, and the proportions of other phyla increased. The total phytoplankton biomass positively correlated with phosphorus, and Cyanobacteria biomass with silica. Evident changes were also observed in the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton. Before 2010, the highest values of biomass occurred in autumn, and were related to high biomass of Cyanobacteria. Higher biomass has been recently reached in spring, during the dominance of Ochrophyta associated with Chlorophyta, Charophyta, and Cryptophyta. Generalised additive models showed a significant decreasing trend of the total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, and flagellates, suggesting a decrease in eutrophication. This trend is concurrent with a considerable increase in the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass since 2010. The increased ratio, however, did not result from elevated zooplankton biomass, but from the drop in phytoplankton biomass. Therefore, the most probable reason for the decrease in phytoplankton biomass was the simultaneous decrease in the concentration of all nutrients. The potential additional impact of filtration by a new alien bivalve Rangia cuneata G. B. Sowerby I, 1832 is also discussed.

Opis:
The species composition and size-structure of the phytoplankton community in the Boka Kotorska Bay (SE Adriatic Sea) were analysed with respect to abundance and carbon biomass, together with the physico-chemical parameters, with the aim of evaluating the predefined oligo-mesotrophic status of this transitional water ecosystem. Three stations located in the inner part of the Bay were sampled with seasonal frequency in 2008/2009. Picophytoplankton cells were counted using flow cytometry; nanophytoplankton and microphytoplankton were identified and counted by light microscopy. The relative importance of the picoplankton in the Bay, in terms of both abundance and biomass, during all the investigated seasons emphasized their significance in the phytoplankton community. Picocyanobacteria (Synechococcus) constituted a significant part of the summer assemblages with regard to both abundance (up to 3.38 × 108 cells L−1) and carbon biomass (up to 73% of total phytoplankton carbon). The contribution of the nanophytoplankton was found to be generally low (<20% of the total phytoplankton carbon) in all seasons, and was dominated by autotrophic/mixotrophic flagellates. Species with a preference towards nutrient-enriched conditions, like the diatom Skeletonema marinoi, dominated the microphytoplankton fraction. S. marinoi was the most abundant in spring/winter (up to 2.86×106 cells L−1) above the halocline (making a 96% contribution to the microphytoplankton). The potentially toxin-producing diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima was recorded at abundances greater than 105 cells L−1, together with Thalassionema frauenfeldii, as well as the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum micans and the potentially harmful P. minimum. The higher values of phytoplankton biomass and the dominance of phytoplankton species or groups with preferences for nutrient-enriched conditions appear to be consistent with the oligo-mesotrophic status of this specific ecosystem.

Opis:
Evaluated direct methods for estimating primary production are both a precondition and a supplement for modeling scenarios in a eutrophicated and changing coastal ecosystem. Analyses of phytoplankton succession, integral primary production and potential limitation of phytoplankton growth of the shallow brackish Darss-Zingst Bodden chain indicate the extraordinary importance of colony-forming nanophytoplankton for primary productivity. Respective studies began in the 1990s. Exemplary studies focus on the contribution of individual aggregates and phytoplankton colonies to potential primary production as well as the microscale visualization and seasonal variability of extracellular enzymatic phosphate hydrolysis. Results from these studies suggest that an inhomogeneous distribution of productivity and limitation is relevant to the pelagic zones. This paper discusses the effect of heterogeneity on ecosystem behavior in this specific trophy succession state in the context of a future strategy to supplement bulk methods for productivity and limitation analyses especially for barely distinguishable phytoplankton species in euthropicated coastal waters.

In the years 1993-1995 biological research was carried out on three lakes, which are situated in a typical agricultural catchment area, along the Gołaniecka River. The hydrobiological examination carried out in 1993 revealed a stable state of eutrophy on these lakes. At that time neither of the Bukowieckie lakes was used for recreation, while at the Kobyleckie lake there were a number of buildings, including private holiday homes and holiday camps. In 1995, the year finishing the examination, recreation housing began to develop at the Bukowieckie Du?e lake and also an acceleration of tourism was observed on the Kobyleckie lake. In the spring and summer of 2000 hydrobiological research was repeated in order to find out whether the changes in the neighbourhood of the lakes had affected the chemical condition of lake waters. Although the building area by the lakes was still unfinished, particular changes of many parameters of water were already observed. Negative effects of trophic status were noted in the decrease of the visibility of water, increase of the nutrients concentration, in the outstanding blue-green algae character of the spring phytoplankton (Aphanizomenon issatschenkoi (Ussac.) Proschkina-Lavrenko; Planktothrix agardhii (Gom.) Anagn. et Kom.; Limnothrix redekei (Van Goor) Meffert) and zooplankton (Keratella cochlearis f. tecta (Lauterborn), K. quadrata (O.F. Müller), Anuraeopsis fissa (Gosse), Bosmina longirostris (O.F. Müller) and Chydorus sphaericus (O.F. W latach 1993-1995 przeprowadzono badania biologiczne na jeziorach: Bukowieckim Du- żym, Bukowieckim Małym i Kobyleckim, położonych w obrebie typowej zlewni rolniczej, wzdłuż Strugi Gołanieckiej. Badania hydrobiologiczne przeprowadzone w 1993 roku swiadczyły o stabilnym stanie eutrofii w tych jeziorach. 2). Głównym celem przeprowadzonych badan był opis istotnych zmian jakosciowych i ilosciowych parametrów fizyczno-chemicznych i biologicznych, ze szczególnym odniesieniem do aspektów dotyczacych wzrostu poziomu trofii badanych zbiorników. Negatywne efekty w stanie trofii były zwiazane ze zmniejszajaca sie przezroczystoscia wody, wzrostem koncentracji biogenów, wybitnie sinicowym charakterem fitoplanktonu wiosennego (Aphanizomenon issatschenkoi (Ussac.) The circulation of Atlantic water along the European continental slope, in particular the inflow into the North Sea, influences North Sea water characteristics with consequent changes in the environment affecting plankton community dynamics. The long-term effect of fluctuating oceanographic conditions on the North Sea pelagic ecosystem is assessed. It is shown that (i) there are similar regime shifts in the inflow through the northern North Sea and in Sea Surface Temperature, (ii) long-term phytoplankton trends are influenced by the inflow only in some North Sea regions, and (iii) the spatial variability in chemicophysical and biological parameters highlight the influence of smaller scale processes.

Opis:
This study was carried out to determine the water quality of the beaches at Matrouh, south-eastern Mediterranean Sea, Egypt, by studying environmental variables as well as phytoplankton abundance and community structure. Surface water samples were monitored from a series of beach sites over a period of five seasons during 2009–2010. A total of 203 phytoplankton species were identified from seven algal divisions. Seasonal differences in the quantitative and qualitative composition of the phytoplankton communities in the different sites were marked. Nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton abundances were found to be poorer than those of many other areas along Egyptian coast. The Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index classified Matrouh water as being between clean and moderately polluted, whereas the WQI demonstrated that it was between good and excellent. It can be concluded that the index based onWQI is currently more suitable than the phytoplankton species index for assessing the quality of the water of the Matrouh beaches.
