Opis:
Environmental factors in workspaces affect employee productivity and satisfaction, particularly in call centres. One of the most challenging issues in contemporary offices is overcoming the problems of concentration on work, despite adverse effects such as insufficient lighting, inappropriate acoustics, or inadequate ventilation. The challenges increase in open-plan solutions. This paper presents a case study from Turkey that elaborates on strategies to improve environmental performance in call centres. It is inspired by a questionnaire conducted among employees of a call centre, identifying existing design lacks. Based on the results, acoustic quality calculations of the physical workspace follow, and initial computing outcomes reveal that the conditions do not meet the standards for call centres. The authors propose strategies to improve acoustic performance in the workspace and apply them to a virtual model. Results reveal that the proposed solutions allow for meeting the standards. Based on the findings, the authors suggest several other strategies for improving the physical environmental quality of the place, thus forming a guideline for the architectural design of call centres. The study derives information from a specific case and context to propose universally applicable solutions. It fills a gap in the literature as it exemplifies the characteristics of call centres in Turkey, which have not been studied before.

Opis:
Purpose: Determination of such an interval of workplace environmental physical factors control, which would ensure high monitoring reliability and the minimum data collection and processing duration (or cost). Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the goal were applied: analysis and synthesis of known scientific results on the topic of research, statistical analysis, mathematical modelling. Statistical data for determining the interval of control was recorded at regular intervals. Findings: A methodology has been developed for determining the interval of workplace environmental physical factors values control. It is based on the identification of patterns of change in the physical factors values. The algorithm of workplace environmental physical factors values control is proposed, which helps to identify cases when the actual values of the factors exceed the limit values. The practical application of theoretical propositions showed that the correlation coefficient between the factual sample and the sample formed using the determined control interval is within 0.74…0.88, which satisfies the condition R > 0.5 as intended. Research limitations/implications: The mechanism for workplace environmental physical factors values monitoring was further developed on the basis of forecasting changes in the physical factors values and determining the duration of the excess of the factors values over the limit. In this study on stationary and conditional stationary processes was the focus. Practical implications: The use of the algorithm that is based on the methodology for determining the interval of workplace environmental physical factors values control contributes to more effective monitoring of working safety. Originality/value: For the first time justified by the choice of the control interval of workplace environmental physical factors values with acceptable accuracy of the forecast that allow to quickly establish working conditions hazard class.

Opis:
Materiał i metody Reprezentatywne badanie 1000 firm zatrudniających > 50 pracowników. Wywiady telefoniczne ze wspomaganiem komputerowym (computer assisted telephone interviewing – CATI) z reprezentantami zarządów (listopad–grudzień 2015 r.). Wyniki Co drugie przedsiębiorstwo podejmowało nienakazane prawem działania na rzecz zdrowia pracowników. Najczęściej oferowały opiekę medyczną, wspierały aktywność fizyczną, dbały o środowisko pracy bardziej, niż wymagają przepisy. Robiły to, żeby budować swój dobry wizerunek, poprawiać produktywność i ograniczać koszty. Znaczenie miały też: tradycja takich działań w firmie, osobiste nastawienie pracodawcy i chęć wzmocnienia witalności pracowników. Mimo dobrej kondycji ekonomicznej firm podstawową przeszkodą w działaniach był niedobór środków finansowych. Do utrudnień należały też: niedostatek zachęt ze strony państwa, zaabsorbowanie kadry zarządzającej, brak wiedzy o korzyściach z promocji zdrowia i dobrej oferty usług prozdrowotnych. Niewiele firm motywowało pracowników do promocji zdrowia i prowadziło jej ewaluację. Wnioski Rozwój promocji zdrowia w firmach wymaga popularyzowania korzyści z nią związanych wśród pracodawców, szkolenia pracowników działu kadr i zasobów ludzkich (human resources – HR) oraz bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy (bhp) w zarządzaniu projektami prozdrowotnymi, wdrożenia systemowych ulg i prestiżowych wyróżnień dla firm promujących zdrowie, wzmocnienia naukowych badań uwarunkowań i skuteczności działań prozdrowotnych w przedsiębiorstwach. Istotna jest tu rola państwa we współpracy z podmiotami zaangażowanymi w te obszary aktywności. Med. Pr. 2017;68(2):229–246
Background The workplace health promotion (WHP) activity of enterprises in Poland was examined. The findings referred to how many companies implemented non-obligatory actions for health and what actions were taken, what were the reasons and obstacles in the implementation, whether companies evaluated their activity, how they motivated staff to WHP, and whether the size and economic standing differentiated their activity. Material and Methods Representative survey, consisted of computer assisted telephone interviews with delegates of the boards of 1000 companies employing > 50 employees, held in November–December 2015. Results Every second company undertook voluntary actions for workers health. Most often they offered medical care, supported physical activity and took care about the work environment in a higher range than required by binding regulations. They promoted health to build company’s good image, improve productivity and reduce costs. The tradition of WHP in the company, attitudes of employers and intention to boost the vitality of employees also played a role . Despite good financial standing of companies, the shortage of funds was the main barrier in the implementation of WHP activities. Other impediments, such as lack of sufficient state incentives, workload of the management staff, lack of knowledge about WHP benefits and lack of good pro-health services were observed as well. Few companies motivated employees to WHP and carried out its evaluation. Conclusions The development of WHP requires dissemination of its benefits among employers, human resources and safety personnel trainings in WHP management, implementation of the system of relief and prestigious awards for active companies, increase in the number and scope of research works on WHP conditions and effectiveness. Crucial herein is the role of the state in cooperation with other major WHP actors. Med Pr 2017;68(2):229–246

Opis:
This research was conducted to address the experience of workplace violence of Turkish workers from different sectors and to investigate the impact of the exposed violence on their psychological well-being. Data were collected anonymously with printed questionnaires from the volunteer participants and depended on self-reporting. The response rate was 79.0% (1708/2161). The prevalence of workplace violence was found to be 44.8%. The most common type was verbal violence together with mobbing (bullying). Victims of physical violence were mostly males, whereas females were found to be victims of verbal, psychological and sexual violence. Most cases did not result in legal action and the victims remained silent. Psychological well-being of exposed workers in terms of depression, anxiety and stress seemed to deteriorate. Workplace violence remains a silent epidemic in Turkey. Preventive measures against workplace violence and social support for violated workers do not exist.
