Opis:
Silver fir is one of the main tree species of mountain and foothill forests in Poland that in optimal conditions forms pure stands with multi−layer structure. The study objective is to present differences in height and diameter growth rates of firs growing in upper stand layers and in the undergrowth. The research was conducted in 12 fir stands located in the Beskid Niski Mts. (southern Poland). In each stand height and diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured for 25 fir trees in order to develop a height curve. The first canopy layer included trees that were higher than ⅔ Hmax established from the height curve of the tree with the largest dbh. Height and diameter were measured on eight trees selected from the first canopy layer. An increment core was extracted at breast height in order to estimate the tree age. From the third canopy layer, which included trees higher than 2 m with dbh below 7 cm, five trees were selected. After cutting those trees, the length of the last ten branch whorls was measured. Five−year ring width measurements starting from the bark towards the pith were done at the stem cross−sections obtained at breast height. The number of rings was counted on remaining stumps. Height growth rate was defined as the height at the base age of 100 years (eq. 1). For the first canopy layer, the height growth rate was on average 31.8 m, while for the undergrowth it was 12.1 m. There was also large difference between diameter growth rate of the first stand canopy layer (55.7 cm) and undergrowth (18.3 cm). Both differences were significant at p=0.05. These discrepancies could result from low amount of light reaching the forest floor. The correlation between height and diameter growth rates and undergrowth tree age was negative in both cases. Long periods of shading result in smaller number of firs reaching the first canopy layer. Assuming that uneven−aged stand structure is optimal for that species, it should be characterized by a spatial variability (mosaic) of various canopy layers including even−aged patches with sparse canopy closure as well as gaps where fir regeneration will be initiated having favorable growth conditions.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. The issues of humans’ ageing are more and more frequently addressed in the relevant literature. Most commonly, people follow three ageing trajectories: a normal one, disease-affected one, and a healthy one. The purpose of this article is to present a relationship between physical activity and occurrence of cognitive function impairment in the elderly. Material and methods. This paper is a narrative review. Based on a literature search, various forms of physical activity are presented, as well as the effects of physical activity on mitigation of cognitive disorders in the elderly. The following databases were used: Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar. Analysis of the literature. One of the most important factors that promote healthy ageing is regular physical activity. Many studies and publications have addressed this issue. The relationships between physical activity and cognitive fitness have been less studied. Conclusion. The results of the studies presented in this article may form the basis for more in-depth analyses and, in a longterm perspective, for the development of optimal preventive and therapeutic strategies using broadly understood physical activity to maintain cognitive fitness of the elderly.

Introduction. In effect of the ageing process, there are involutional changes in older adults both in the mental and in the physical spheres. Some factors may slow down the ageing process. Physical activity is one of these factors. Physical ability is one of the most important indicators of quality of life of older adults, and it can be shaped by physical activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess chosen factors that influence physical ability of adults older than 65 years. Material and methods. The study involved 63 older adults. The criterion for inclusion in the study was the age - older than 65 years. There were 37 women and 26 men in the study population. All the subjects were able to walk without assistance, and they had no contraindications to do functional tests. We used a questionnaire of our own design, three SPPB trials, Up&Go test; we calculated the BMI indices and assessed depression scale. Results. We found that older adults rarely engage in physical activity. The low level of physical activity of the older adults was reflected in equally low physical ability level, as assessed by functional tests. We found a directly proportional dependence between body mass and the level of functional limitations and risk of falls. Conclusion. In our functional tests, we found a statistically significant correlation with regard to age and BMI index.

Opis:
Introduction: The preschool age is reasonably considered as the most significant period in the process of a child's body formation. It is at this particular age that the foundation is laid for personal health and physical qualities necessary for efficient participation in various spheres of social life in the future. The aim of this study is to get a knowledge about the dynamics and level of physical fitness in three- to sixyear-old children. Material and methods: The study was carried out on the basis of pre-school institutions of Lviv and Lviv region in 2017. Altogether 1188 preschool children (n=1188) were involved in the research, including 418 children of junior preschool age (3 to 4 years old), 350 middleaged preschoolers (4 to 5 years old) and 420 senior preschoolers (5 to 6 years old). Methods of research applied were as follows: analysis and systematization of scientific publications, educational experiment, educational testing, educational observations, Student's t-test, parametric statistics methods. Results: It has been found that with age the examined sample of children displays gradual improvement of all physical fitness characteristics. The findings testify to intensive and heterochronic development of children's motor qualities in the process of their ontogenesis. Conclusion: General physical fitness level of the majority of the examined children could be estimated as satisfactory and corresponding to the appropriate age standards. Our findings supplement the data on application of the available informative tests for preschooler's physical fitness assessment.

Karate classes can positively affect the health of children and develop body and soul harmoniously. The purpose of the work is to examine the influence of physical ed ucation classes with a priority in application of oriental martial arts on the physical and psychophysical preparedness of preschool boys (n=71). Assessment of physical and psycho -physical preparedness for children was performed with the set of tests ( stan ding long jump , throws of the ball against the wall and catching it , flexion and extension of arms lying on the floor , jumping with a rope to fatigue , raising of the body from the initial supine position , squats, writing the letter “O”, claps, pronouncing of digits, keeping the “Flamingo” pose). The children from the experimental group (n=33) were trained by the program with the priority in application of karate. Children from control group had Physical Education classes according Ukrainian State program fo r preschooler children “Sure Start”. The physical state and the level of psycho -physical fitness were rated as average. The implementation of the physical education program with the priority in application of karate has proven its higher efficacy compared to the traditional one. The program contributed significantly to raising the level of physical and mental fitness, overall assessment increased from 3.0 to 4.8 points in the experimental group. Better discipline, greater attention, higher mental capacity and less fatigue of children who attended the author’s program confirm that the classes with the priority of karate application can promote the full readiness of children for school.

Opis:
In the conditions of late modernity, the body is a project realized in both the public and private spheres. The aim of this article is to review theories and empirical studies concerning socio-cultural issues and the subjective determinants of perceptions of physicality. The body has become the main instrument of experiencing the world and oneself, a significant area, a key element of an individual’s identification strategy. The modern human speaks with and through the body, the person’s identity is reduced to self-presentation, by projecting their physicality, they project themselves. The presentation and reception of body is dominated by an aesthetic perspective, organically bound with the tendency to aestheticize daily life in general. The text is based on empirical data, analysis of 403 qualitative interviews conducted between 2012-2014 in Polish cities: Warsaw, Kielce, Chelmno, and Przemysl. The research shows that the emotional aspect of experiencing body, as well as the cognitive aspect within consciousness, the mental image of one’s own body, differ according to the respondents’ age and gender.

Strong evidence exists that fitness is a physical health resource, which serves to protect one’s health. There is still uncertainty about which fitness level provides the best health outcome and which measurements can be used for analyzing this question. This cross-sectional study analyzed 462 (64.07% female) German middle-aged adults regarding their fitness status, physical activity (Non-Exercise test), body composition (Body Mass Index) and heart-related health status. Motor tests were used to measure the health-related fitness status. The heart-related health status was surveyed by questionnaire and diagnosis was done in part by a physician. Relationships between risk factors and fitness factors are visible during the correlative analysis. They are substantially more visible in the differentiation of people with and without risks. People with low fitness show noticeable risks in activity, Body Mass Index and heart-related health. People with high fitness show health resources for activity, Body Mass Index and heart-related health. This study points out that all fitness dimensions influence one’s heart-related health in a positive way. Fitness is measured objectively and includes all health-related fitness dimensions such as endurance, strength, coordination and flexibility. Apart from this standardization, we ask for more longitudinal studies and more objective health measurements.

One of the most important factors of successful ageing is a sufficient level of motor independence, which is strongly associated with an appropriate level of activity. It was decided to determine the relationship between barriers to physical activity and physical activity and health self-assessment in healthy and chronically ill men, among 206 men aged 65–83 years. A relationship was found between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health, and the differences between health self-assessment in the healthy and chronically ill. No differences were found regarding activity. Important factors affecting the health of older men are selfawareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity. A relationship exists between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health. The awareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity are the most significant factors affecting the health self-assessment of older men.

Background: Physical activity (PA) has a positive effect on human health at all ages and it is especially important in older people. When insufficient, it may lead to the deterioration of a person’s health status. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the declared PA of the Universities of the Third Age (U3A) students and to examine the relationship between the level of PA, physical performance, and quality of life in this population. Material and methods: The study included 99 subjects, aged ≥60 years, with a Mini Mental State Examination score ≥24. Participants were examined using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire, the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), the Activities of Daily Living scale (ADL), the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL), and the short form of the geriatric depression scale (GDS). Handgrip strength (HS) was measured using the baseline hydraulic dynamometer. Results: Statistically significant differences in the results of women and men were demonstrated in 5 variables: the level of PA measured with the IPAQ, physical component summary of the SF-36 questionnaire, the total SPPB score, HS of the dominant hand and the non-dominant hand. In all examinations, men obtained higher scores than women. Positive correlations between PA and the result of the ADL, IADL, SPPB, HS and physical component summary of the SF-36 questionnaire were shown. Conclusions: The study confirmed that the participants of the U3A classes mostly meet the recommendations regarding minimum PA and they willingly undertake regular PA. It translates into high functional and physical fitness, stronger muscles and a good QoL.

Opis:
The aim of our paper was to identify the effect of physical activities on the reduction of stress among the elderly who regularly participated in a physical activity program and point out the positive effects of these exercises. The research sample consisted of a total of 202 elderly people from 64 to 78 years of age. 102 of them regularly exercised within the framework of the Motion studio program for the elderly organised by the University of the Third Age at Brno University of Technology. Other 100 seniors did not study and none of them exercised regularly. The level of stress was measured with the Stress Test (Selye, 1993, Křivohlavý, 2001).We looked for differences in the level of stress among seniors who exercise on a regular basis and those who do not exercise. We compared age, retirement time and all physiological stress-related difficulties. We used the Pearson correlation coefficient and the factual evaluation for statistical evaluation of the obtained data. The obtained results, indicate that the seniors who came regularly to the Motion studio showed less stress than the rest of the tested elders. They showed lower level in the zone of moderate stress, on average 4.5 points (men exhibited slightly higher stress level – 5 points – than women – 4 points) compared to the average of 8.1 points among seniors without sports and regular exercise (again, men showed higher levels of stress – 8.3 points – than women – 7.9 points). We found that the time spent in retirement does not statistically significantly affect the level of stress among the elderly (0.05 % significance level). The results indicated that the main stressors in old age are primarily physiological factors, which determine the level of life quality and often cause protracted diseases, particularly those related to musculoskeletal system. The time spent in retirement does not statistically significantly affect the level of stress of the elderly. Seniors without sports and regular exercise who reported higher levels of stress complained more about their cardiovascular condition, loss of appetite and neurological problems. The research has shown that seniors who are regularly engaged in physical activities are less stressed than seniors without sports and regular exercise.

Background In Poland average life expectancy extends, while the number of the elderly who are active in the labor market decreases. Material and Methods The study population consisted of 429 people aged 50–70 years old living in the community of south-eastern Poland. The respondents were divided into 2 study groups: group I – late middle age (50–60 years old) and group II – early old age (61–70 years old). With the use of questionnaires they were given, we obtained their socio-demographic data, assessed their cognitive and emotional state, as their physical activity levels. We used the Tinetti test to assess their gait and balance. Results We did not find statistically significant difference in cognitive functioning between the studied groups (p = 0.109). Moreover, there was no significant relationship between belonging to an age group and suffering from depression (p = 0.06) as well as no major differences were observed in the general level of physical activity in relation to age (p = 0.112). Our study found that most of our subjects, regardless of gender, declared their willingness to continue professional work after reaching retirement age. Conclusions The results of own research did not show significant differences in psychophysical state between people in late middle age and at the beginning of old age. Most of the researched participants declared their willingness to continue professional work. Due to changing demographic conditions, it is becoming an important issue to maintain the highest possible level of professional activity of older people in the labor market in Poland. Opis:
BACKGROUND Even very thorough clinical research does not allow one to fully visualize the functional state of elderly patients. Many simple and complex functional tests are applied to analyse this state. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy in the elderly age as well as to verify and indicate the factors determining the effectiveness of the improvement therapy process after clinical trial qualification and after 6 months of a physiotherapy program. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 30 elderly patients (18 female, 12 male) between 65 to 81 years of age (mean age of 72 5.3). To evaluate the state of the patients, selected elements of the following tests were used: Takata, Fullerton Fitness Test and Tinnetti test. RESULTS 16 patients (53%) achieved the maximum value in the Tinnetti test. The up and go test was not performed by one female only. The one leg stand test was not done by 2 persons (6.6%). The male patients had better results in palm grip muscle strength evaluated by a dynamometric test. The greatest improvement in physical functioning was observed after a 6-month period of rehabilitation in the studied active group, especially in the Fullerton test compared with the other groups. CONCLUSION The research results are show that the previously described diagnostic methods seem to be useful in geriatric rehabilitation. Rehabilitation regularly carried out under the supervision of a specialist most effectively improves the functional status of patients.
MATERIAŁ I METODY Grupę badaną stanowiło 30 pacjentów (18 kobiet oraz 12 mężczyzn) w wieku 61–81 lat (śr. 72 5,3 roku), spełniających kryteria włączenia (rokowanie przeżycia ≥ 3 lata, możliwość wykonania testów czynnościowych przewidzianych w programie).

Opis:
The article is to describe the metal monuments discovered in position No. 2 in Strobin (commune Konopnica) in the light of metallurgical studies. This treasure dates back to the V Bronze Age by. A. Montelius (H B3 by P. Reinecke) and comes with a fortified settlement of the Lusatian culture.Article is divided into several parts. The first of these is explained differences and definitions related to metallurgical studies. In a further describes the main components of alloys made of tin bronzes. The main components of bronze alloy is tin and copper. It is also described how the amount of tin and copper affect the quality and mechanical properties of the alloy. There are also important alloying elements that reduce or increase the quality and strength of the alloy. The next section describe the metallurgical test methods such as X-ray that allows for finding the defects in the metal. Another method which allows to determine the chemical composition of the alloy is spectral analysis. The next section describes the analysis of metallurgy treasure discovered in Strobin in 1982. It contained fragments of pottery and bronze objects, such as sickles, bracelets, nodules, necklaces, rings, pendants and one bead. The last part is presented the summary and conclusions.
