Opis:
This paper outlines a measurement method of properties of microstructured optical fibers that are useful in sensing applications. Experimental studies of produced photonic-crystal fibers allow for a better understanding of the principles of energy coupling in photonic-crystal fibers. For that purpose, fibers with different filling factors and lattice constants were produced. The measurements demonstrated the influence of the fiber geometry on the coupling level of light between the cores. For a distance between the cores of 15 μm, a very low level (below 2%) of energy coupling was obtained. For a distance of 13 μm, the level of energy transfer toneighboring cores on the order of 2-4% was achieved for a filling factor of 0.29. The elimination of the energycoupling penomenon between the cores was achieved by duplicating the filling factor of the fiber. The coupling level was as high as 22% in the case of fibers with a distance between the cores of 8.5 μm. Our results can be used for microstructured-fiber sensing applications and for transmission-channel switching in liquid-crystal multi-core photonic fibers.

Opis:
In this paper, the authors, chairmen of the 13th Conference on Optical Fibers and Their Applications OFA 2011, and editors of the conference proceedings summarize the development of optical fiber technology in Poland (during the period of 2009-2011) on the basis of papers presented there and consecutively published in this volume. The digest is thus not full but covers the periodically presented material every 18 months during the meetings on optical fibers in Białystok-Białowieża and Lublin-Krasnobród.

Opis:
Optical fiber technology is an important branch of science and technology, but also economy. Together with related disciplines it creates wider areas like optoelectronics and photonics. Optical fiber technology is developed in this country rather dynamically, proportionally to the available funds designed locally for research and applications. Recently this development was enhanced with considerable funds from European Operational Funds Innovative Economy POIG and Human Capital POKL. The paper summarizes the development of optical fiber technology in Poland from academic perspective during the period of last 2-3 years. Probably the digest is not very not full. An emphasis is put on development of optical fiber manufacturing methods. This development was illustrated by a few examples of optical fiber applications.

Opis:
In the case of photonic crystal fibers using two or more multicomponent glasses in the photonic structure allows to manipulate refractive index contrast which is not possible in holey fibers. The all-solid holey fibers (SOHO) offer additional degree of freedom to the designer for determination of dispersion than in case of air-holes PCFs. Moreover a fabrication of all-solid PCFs allows for a better control of geometry and uniformity of the cladding structure design. We report on fabrication of such fibers made of multicomponent glasses. In the paper we also discuss possible future modifications of the structures and their potential applications.

Opis:
In the paper we experimentally and theoretically analyze diffraction of light propagating through a microstructured optical fiber on the fiber end face. In the measurements the diffracting light is spatially inhomogeneous and the diffracting object is a solid-state core with a triangular shape. Application of optical system enables detailed experimental investigations of evolution diffraction pattern in the near-field region, in particular, rotation of the observed structure while departing from the fiber end. The experimental results are confirmed with theoretical simulations based on the theory of the Fresnel diffraction.

Opis:
The Conference on Optical Fibers and Their Applications, Nałęczów 2012, in its 14th edition, which has been organized since more than 35 years, has summarized the achievements of the local optical fiber technology community, for the last year and a half. The conference specializes in developments of optical fiber technology, glass and polymer, classical and microstructured, passive and active. The event gathered around 100 participants. There were shown 60 presentations of 20 research and application groups active in fiber photonics, originating from academia and industry. Topical tracks of the Conference were: photonic materials, planar waveguides, passive and active optical fibers, propagation theory in nonstandard optical fibers, and new constructions of optical fibers. A panel discussion concerned teaching in fiber photonics. The conference was accompanied by a school on Optical Fiber Technology. The paper summarizes the chosen main topical tracks of the conference on Optical Fibers and Their Applications, Nałęczów 2012. The papers from the conference presentations will be published in Proc. SPIE, including a conference version of this paper. The next conference of this series is scheduled for January 2014 in Białowieża.

The paper presents a digest of chosen technical work results shown by young researchers from different technical universities in this country during the SPIE-IEEE Wilga 2011 symposium on Photonics and Web Engineering. Topical tracks of the symposium embraced, among others, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies for photonics and telecom, sensory and nonlinear optical fibers, object oriented design of hardware, photonic metrology, optoelectronics and photonics applications, photonics-electronics co-design, optoelectronic and electronic systems for telecom, astronomy and high energy physics experiments, JET and pi-of-the sky experiments development. The symposium is an annual summary in the development of numerable Ph.D. theses carried out in this country in the area of advanced electronic and photonic systems. It is also an occasion for young researchers to meet together in a large group (under the patronage of IEEE) spanning the whole country with guests from this part of Europe. A digest of Wilga references is presented [1-92].
