W artykule zaprezentowano wykonane przez nas włókno mikrostrukturalne o symetrii dwuosiowej. Przedyskutowano również sposoby uzyskiwania anizotropii optycznej we włóknach tego typu oraz wpływ parametrów geometrycznych na dwójłomność włókien, ponadto przedstawiono wyniki symulacji struktur o eliptycznych elementach sieci, eliptycznym rdzeniu i przekroju prostokątnym. Wytworzone włókno scharakteryzowano metodą interferometrii spektralnej ze skrzyżowanymi polaryzatorami. Struktura światłowodu umożliwiła uzyskanie fazowej dwójłomność rzędu 10-4 tj. wartość zbliżoną do światłowodów PANDA.
We report on the fabrication of a birefringent photonic crystal fiber with a photonic cladding composed of elliptical holes ordered in a rectangular lattice. The choice of such configuration allows obtaining birefringence in photonic crystal fibers. In this case two-fold rotational symmetry is achieved and the polarized orthogonal modes (HE11x and HE11y) are not degenerated. We discuss the influence of structural parameters including the ellipticity of the air holes and the aspect ratio of the rectangular lattice on the birefringence and on the modal properties of the fiber.

Opis:
A new design of a guiding-index photonic crystal fiber which possesses a beam shaping effect and flexible control of dispersion has been proposed in this paper. It can shape a Gaussian beam into a circular hollow beam with certain dimension, which can be used in optical communication systems with a Cassegrain antenna to improve transmission efficiency by avoiding the loss of energy caused by the subreflector center reflection. In addition, its dispersion and confinement loss can be changed in a broad range by slightly adjusting structural parameters under condition that the hollow beam dimension remains about the same. Fairly practical properties, zero dispersion or flattened dispersion, can be obtained when structural parameters are set appropriately. A series of models with different parameters are analyzed and compared. Results of numerical simulation show that the ultra-low dispersion of 1.802 ps/km/nm can be obtained when λ = 1.31 μm. Several modest design parameters are given as well.

Opis:
A multi-parameter sensor with enhanced sensitivity based on magnetic fluids infiltrated photonic crystal fiber is proposed. The sensing performances are investigated using the mode coupling theory and finite element method. Four symmetrical defective channels are assembled into the photonic crystal fiber to produce two resonant transmission dips λCV and λCH in vertical and horizontal directions, respectively. Each dip can be split into two relatively shallow dips (λCV1, λCV2 or λCH1, λCH2) when the photonic crystal fiber is bent. Interestingly, the values of (λCH2 – λCH1) and (λCV2 – λCV1) are associated with corresponding bend-curvature but almost unaffected by external temperature or magnetic field. On the contrary, the values of (λCH2 + λCH1)/2 and (λCV2 + λCV1)/2 are sensitive to temperature or magnetic field regardless of the bending condition. Based on above characteristics and the dependence of the magnetic fluids refractive index on temperature and magnetic field, the proposed sensor can measure not only the bend-curvature and bend-direction, but also the temperature and magnetic field.

We provide a convenient way to actively control the wavelength conversion of probe waves based on the soliton dynamics in the As2S3 fibers. In this paper, it is found by numerical calculation that wavelength conversion occurs in the frequency domain due to the existence of refractive index barrier. By adjusting the collision position of pump pulse and probe pulse to realize the conversion of probe pulse wavelength, the effect of the power and the incident wavelength of the probe wave on the wavelength conversion are also discussed. This frequency domain conversion is of great use in the mid-infrared region, for example, all-optical conversion switches.

This paper proposes a method for adjusting light waves propagating in systems composed of photonic fibers, light sources and detection elements. The paper presents the properties of these connections in terms of the loss of signal transmission. Different fiber core areas were analyzed, and measurements of the mode-field diameters (MFDs) of selected fiber structures are presented. The study analyzed two types of LMA (Large Mode Area) fiber structures, and the mode-field diameters of these structures were measured on the basis of the radiation distribution obtained under near-field conditions. The results are compared to the values obtained for a SMF-28 single-mode fiber. The LMA structures analyzed in the paper are characterized by low sensitivity of the MFD parameter to the length of transmitted waves, which creates the possibility of their use as intermediate fibers when connecting optical fibers of different diameters. In the wavelength range from 800 nm to 1600 nm, a 3.5% MFD change was observed for the first investigated LMA structure, and a 1% change was observed for the second. In addition, measurements of the mode-field diameters were also made using the transverse offset method for comparison of the results.

This work suggests a brand-new 1*4 two-dimensional demultiplexer design based on multicore photonic crystal fiber. Numerical models show that the optical signals can be separated in a photonic crystal fiber construction using optical signals with wavelengths of 0.85, 1.1, 1.19, and 1.35 μm injected on the center core and separated into four cores. The innovative design switches different air-hole positions using pure silica layers throughout the length of the fiber to regulate the direction of light transmission between layers. Wavelength demultiplexers are essential parts of optical systemic communications. They serve as a data distributor and can use a single input to produce multiple outputs. The background material is frequently natural silica, and air holes can be found anywhere throughout the length of the fiber as the low-index components. The simulation results showed that after a 6 mm light propagation, the four-channel demux can start to demultiplex.

Opis:
This paper presents a soft glass spiral photonic crystal fiber with circular air holes for achieving high birefringence, large nonlinearity and large negative dispersion. The material used here for designing the fiber is soft glass (SF-57). A central defect air hole is being introduced in the core for achieving high birefringence and for different ellipticity ratios the effect of various optical properties of a photonic crystal fiber are studied. The structure proposed has a high birefringence in the order of 10–2, high nonlinearity of 5828 W–1km–1 and high negative dispersion of –1546.6 ps/nm•km at 0.850 μm. A numerical approach based on the finite element method is used for the design and simulation of the structure. Due to the optimization in the cladding air holes, the fiber can be used as polarization maintaining fibers, in dispersion compensation and other nonlinear applications.

Opis:
A polarization photonic crystal fiber based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed in this paper. The photonic crystal fiber with gold coated holes is studied through using the finite element method. The impacts of structural parameters on the resonance characteristics are discussed. Numerical simulations show that the resonance wavelength can be modulated by changing the parameters of the air holes and thickness of gold layer. At the resonance wavelength 1550 nm, the loss is 3.8045 dB/m in x-polarization and the loss is 28464 dB/m in y-polarization by adjusting the size of the gold-coated holes and the place of air holes. Results show that the loss of y-polarized mode is much larger than the loss of x-polarized mode. The y-polarized mode is suppressed, and only x-polarized mode can be guided at the resonance wavelength of y-polarized mode. The results indicate that the mode polarized in one direction can be filtered out selectively by adjusting the diameter of air holes, and the filtering effect in a communication band is achieved.

In this article, a circular photonic crystal fiber based chemical sensor has been presented where core region is designed with an array of elliptical holes. The proposed structure is numerically investigated by using a full vectorial finite element method. From the numerical results, it is observed that introducing an array of elliptical holes helps to obtain the high relative sensitivity and realizes a low confinement loss. In addition, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the innermost ring enhances the relative sensitivity. Moreover, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the outermost ring reduces the confinement loss. In this work, we have considered an industrially valuable chemical ethanol. Simulation results disclose that the highest relative sensitivity of proposed photonic crystal fiber is 29.25% for ethanol and the confinement loss is 7.68 × 10–7 dB/m at the wavelength 1.5 µm.

This work describes the suitability of a nano-dimension slot with low index material in the core region to achieve a highly nonlinear, polarization maintaining and dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber. Our design is composed of a spiral shaped photonic crystal fiber with an elliptical slot made of silicon nanocrystals in the core region. The simulated results show that high nonlinear coefficients at the 1.55 μm wavelength for quasi-TE mode and quasi-TM mode are found to be equal to 1348 and 638 W–1m–1, respectively. The proposed design offers high birefringence up to 0.2503 and large negative dispersion value –1228 ps/nm/km. The proposed fiber has immense potential for realization of all-optical signal processing devices/networks and sensing applications while maintaining its polarization.

Properties of two different photonic crystal fibers (PCF) were characterized, enabling comparisons. Properties investigated included spectral attenuation, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), optical time domain reflectometer characteristics, elastooptic factor describing transmission delay induced by axial strain plus effects of temperature cycling and fiber twist on PMD and loss. In particular, temperature and twist dependence of PMD was different for each fiber tested. For optical measurements, fibers were fusion spliced to pigtails with standard telecom single mode fibers. PCF splicing procedures and solutions adopted to minimize collapse of holes during arc fusion and splice loss are presented. It was found that fusion splicing procedure must be individually tailored to each combination of fibers.

In this paper, a microstructured optical fiber with dual core was proposed which is known as photonic crystal fiber. Specific optical properties of a dual-core photonic crystal fiber were used to obtain high birefringence, small beat length, flattened dispersion, for different values of structural parameters varied over a wide range of wavelength and analyzed for application such as temperature and pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the temperature sensor is calculated as 20 pm/°C for 6 cm fiber, the sensitivity of the pressure sensor for a range from 0 to 1000 kPa is calculated as –10.5 nm/MPa.

For optimum fusion splicing process of a photonic crystal fiber, the collapsing of the air holes at any photonic crystal fiber is the key point of either increasing or decreasing the total splice loss. In this paper, an experimental study has been carried out to investigate the relation between total splice loss or total fiber attenuation due to splice loss and the length of the collapsed region of the air holes. This is done by splicing ESM-12B photonic crystal fiber between two equal lengths of single mode fibers and measuring the attenuation at different arc times and arc powers. The results showed that the increase in the length of the collapsed air holes region results in higher loss, therefore, higher fiber attenuation.

The phenomenon of optical birefringence in optical fibers is caused by external factors and stress induced by the manufacturing process. This optical birefringence makes it difficult to apply optical fibers as a polarimetric sensors head. Author of this paper, proposes the application of index guiding photonic crystal fibers because stress values in a fiber core caused by internal and external factors are lower. In this paper investigation results extended in comparison with the previous author’s investigations are presented. This extension relies on investigation of magnetooptic for wavelength 405 nm. On the basis of experimental results optimal work points of optical sensing fibers were determined.

The paper presents optical measurements - spectral loss, OTDR and PMD, temperature cycling and mechanical tests - bending, twist and crush, performed on Yb-doped single mode fibers and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Several issues related specifically to characterization of such specialty fibers, like measurement errors and artifacts as well as coupling of test instruments to samples are presented. Of particular importance is reliable and low-loss fusion splicing of specialty fibers to standard single mode fibers (SMF), as most commercially available fiber test instruments are fitted with SMF interfaces only.

Przedstawiono czujnik ciśnienia w układzie interferometru Sagnaca z dwójłomnym światłowodem fotonicznym typu PM-1550-01. Analitycznie wyznaczono jego charakterystykę przetwarzania. Zbadano właściwości metrologiczne czujnika w zakresie ciśnień 0-0.45 MPa. Zmierzono charakterystykę przetwarzania dla różnych długości fali w zakresie 1460-1600 nm i wyznaczono czułość ciśnieniową czujnika. Zbadano wpływ długości fali na czułość ciśnieniową czujnika. Przedstawiono możliwości jego zastosowania.
A pressure sensor in the Sagnac interferometer configuration with a polarization maintaining (PM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) of the PM-1550-01 type is presented. The application of the PM-PCF instead of a conventional PM fiber provides the sensor with a very low temperature sensitivity and also decreases the required length of the PM fiber because of the higher modal birefringence that can be achieved in a PM-PCF. The scheme of the sensor is shown in Fig. 1. The pressure acting on the PM-PCF causes the output spectrum to shift in the direction of higher wavelengths because of the sensitivity of modal birefringence to hydrostatic pressure. One of the fundamental qualities of the sensor is the fact that the sensitivity to pressure is independent of the length of the birefringent fiber in the Saganc loop. The conversion characteristic of the sensor was calculated analytically. The metrological properties of the sensor were examined in the pressure range: 0 - 0.45 MPa. The conversion characteristic was measured for different wavelengths in the range of 1460-1600 nm and for different lengths of the birefringent fiber. On that basis the pressure sensitivity of the sensor was determined. It was also investigated how the pressure sensitivity varied with the wavelength in the range: 1460-1600 nm. Other features of the sensor are: high sensitivity (3.6 to 3.0 nm/MPa in the wavelength range: 1460-1600 nm), simple mechanical and optical configuration, frequency output insensitive to amplitude interference, lack of a mechanical transducer (pressure acts directly on the optical fiber) and ability to change the conversion sensitivity by changing the length of the fiber segment subjected to pressure.

This paper proposes and demonstrates a novel scheme of a two-channel-output ultra-wideband monocycle pulse generator consisting of a 100 m dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and two optical bandpass filters. Based on the cross-phase modulation effect in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, two polarity-reversed ultra-wideband monocycle pulses simultaneously output from two different channels are successfully achieved by appropriately locating the probe wavelength at the left linear slope and the right linear slope of the two optical bandpass filters transmission spectra, respectively. The full width at half-maximum and a fractional bandwidth of 24 ps and 260% for a positive pulse, 24 ps and 251% for a negative pulse are obtained. Moreover, the influences of input signal powers, the polarization misalignment between the data light and the continuous wave probe light, and probe wavelength variation on the double output ultra-wideband signals quality are also investigated. The results show that the system has some tolerance to both the input signal power fluctuation and the slight polarization mismatch and even can efficiently operate with a widely tunable wavelength range. This makes it very attractive for engineering applications in future multiuser ultra-wideband-over-fiber communication systems.

Wskazano, że szybki wzrost wymagań dotyczących przepływności łączy abonenckich i jakości usług zmusza do budowy nowej infrastruktury dostępowej, przeważnie z wykorzystaniem włókien światłowodowych jako medium transmisyjnego. Przedstawiono czynniki motywujące operatorów do budowy sieci światłowodowych, rozwiązania techniczne sieci, ich klasyfikację oraz problemy związane z zapewnieniem dostępu do sieci operatorom alternatywnym.
The paper highlights that rapidly growing requirements for subscriber access speed and service quality force operators to build a new access infrastructure, preferably based on optical fibers as the transmission medium. A review of factors motivating to build fiber access networks, technical solutions, terminology and problems related to provision of access for competitive operators is presented.

W publikacji przedstawiono prace wykonane w Instytucie Technologii Materiałów Elektronicznych dotyczące wytworzenia światłowodu fotonicznego wykonanego ze szkła fosforanowego z przeznaczeniem do konstrukcji lasera włóknowego. Wykonane zostały wytopy szkieł domieszkowanych i niedomieszkowanych. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych pomiarów spektralnych przeprowadzono analizę własności absorpcyjnych i emisyjnych wytworzonego szkła domieszkowanego. Zweryfikowano parametry dopasowania szkieł domieszkowanego i niedomieszkowanego pod kątem właściwości reologicznych i współczynnika załamania. Wytworzone zostało włókno laserowe ze szkła fosforanowego o strukturze dwupłaszczowej (double-clad) w pełni wykonanej w technologii fotonicznej. Poprzez zastosowanie włókna o powiększonej średnicy rdzenia uzyskano znaczne zwiększenie absorpcji promieniowania pompy i skrócenie długości lasera. Ponadto stosując płaszcz powietrzny osiągnięto rekordową wartość apertury numerycznej falowodu pompy we włóknie typu double-clad ze szkła fosforanowego wynoszącą 0,91. Maksymalna moc generacji w laboratoryjnym układzie lasera we włóknie o długości 19 cm wyniosła 12,4 W przy sprawności różniczkowej 42,8 %.
This paper presents the research work on a Yb3+ doped photonic crystal fiber laser with an extended mode area made of phosphate glass carried out at ITME. By increasing the mode area we obtained the laser with a higher power level and a shorter fiber length than before. The doped and undoped glass was manufactured and subsequently the measurements of optical and rheological properties were done. The analysis of both absorption and emission of the doped glass was performed. The fiber with the extended mode area was manufactured and its passive properties were examined. The numerical aperture of the pump waveguide was found to be very high and equaled 0.91, which is a record-breaking value for phosphate photonic structures and, at the same time, one of the highest values obtained for structures made of silica. We achieved laser generation from the 19 cm fiber with the maximum power of 12.4 W and the slope efficiency of 42.8 %.

Opis:
A broad review is given of microstructured fiber optics components - light guides, image guides, multicapillary arrays, and photonic crystal fibers - fabricated using the stack-and-draw method from various in-house synthesized oxide soft glasses at the Glass Department of the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology (ITME). The discussion covers fundamental aspects of stack-and-draw technology used at ITME, through design methods, soft glass material issues and parameters, to demonstration of representative examples of fabricated structures and an experimental characterization of their optical properties and results obtained in typical applications. Specifically, demonstrators include microstructured image guides providing resolution of up to 16000 pixels sized up to 20 μm in diameter, and various photonic crystal fibers (PCFs): index-guiding regular lattice air-hole PCFs, hollow core photonic bandgap PCFs, or specialty PCFs like highly birefringent microstructured fibers or highly nonlinear fibers for supercontinuum generation. The presented content is put into context of previous work in the area reported by the group of authors, as well as other research team.

This paper outlines a measurement method of properties of microstructured optical fibers that are useful in sensing applications. Experimental studies of produced photonic-crystal fibers allow for a better understanding of the principles of energy coupling in photonic-crystal fibers. For that purpose, fibers with different filling factors and lattice constants were produced. The measurements demonstrated the influence of the fiber geometry on the coupling level of light between the cores. For a distance between the cores of 15 μm, a very low level (below 2%) of energy coupling was obtained. For a distance of 13 μm, the level of energy transfer toneighboring cores on the order of 2-4% was achieved for a filling factor of 0.29. The elimination of the energycoupling penomenon between the cores was achieved by duplicating the filling factor of the fiber. The coupling level was as high as 22% in the case of fibers with a distance between the cores of 8.5 μm. Our results can be used for microstructured-fiber sensing applications and for transmission-channel switching in liquid-crystal multi-core photonic fibers.

The Conference on Optical Fibers and Their Applications, Nałęczów 2012, in its 14th edition, which has been organized since more than 35 years, has summarized the achievements of the local optical fiber technology community, for the last year and a half. The conference specializes in developments of optical fiber technology, glass and polymer, classical and microstructured, passive and active. The event gathered around 100 participants. There were shown 60 presentations of 20 research and application groups active in fiber photonics, originating from academia and industry. Topical tracks of the Conference were: photonic materials, planar waveguides, passive and active optical fibers, propagation theory in nonstandard optical fibers, and new constructions of optical fibers. A panel discussion concerned teaching in fiber photonics. The conference was accompanied by a school on Optical Fiber Technology. The paper summarizes the chosen main topical tracks of the conference on Optical Fibers and Their Applications, Nałęczów 2012. The papers from the conference presentations will be published in Proc. SPIE, including a conference version of this paper. The next conference of this series is scheduled for January 2014 in Białowieża.

Opis:
A reconfigurable and tunable multi-tap bandpass microwave photonic filter based on a hybrid-gain-assisted multi-wavelength fiber ring laser (HMFRL) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The HMFRL containing a hybrid gain medium and a high birefringence fiber loop mirror serves as the multiple taps generator for the microwave photonic filter. In order to realize a bandpass filter, the multiple taps are phase modulated, then the modulated signal is launched into a coil of dispersion compensating fiber to introduce different time delays for each tap. As a result, a bandpass response is obtained at the output of a high speeding photodetector. By adjusting the bias of the semiconductor optical amplifier from 344 to 450 mA, the number of multiple taps can be increased without optical signal-to-noise ratio degradation. Thus, a multi-tap bandpass microwave photonic filter with bandwidth reconfiguring from 449 to 274 MHz is achieved. In addition, by changing the length of polarization maintaining fiber in the high birefringence fiber loop mirror, the wavelength spacing of the multiple taps can be adjusted, making the bandpass microwave photonic filter’s free spectral range tunable.

The paper describes the measurement of cylindrical charge wall velocity profiles at various angles to the surface normal. The wall velocities were measured using simple zero generation photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV). The detonation velocity was measured simultaneously using fiber optic probes coupled with a digital chronometer. The PDV probe angles were set in the range of -2° to 17° to the surface normal. Powdered pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and the PETN-based plastic-bonded explosive Semtex 1A were selected as the explosive materials in order to ensure reliable detonation under the measurement conditions. The explosive charges were confined in thin-walled aluminum tubes with an internal diameter of 16 mm and wall thickness of 2 mm. The results can be useful for the characterization of charge expansion phenomena and also for the optimization of cylinder test measurements using PDV. Gurney constants were determined for both explosives.
