Growing environmental pollution caused that more and more efficient methods of sewage treatment are being developed. Various physicochemical and biological processes are used to achieve that aim. Photocatalysis is one of the most efficient methods of degradation of harmful chemical compounds. It is one of the advanced oxygenation processes (AOP). Thanks to that technique most of the organic compounds, including medicines is degraded as a result of reactions of free hydroxide radicals in the environment. Target of the research was to develop effective and cost efficient method of eradication of selected chemical compounds using photocatalytic process. To achieve that aim, commercial TiO2-P25 catalyst immobilized on fiberglass has been used. Reaction has been conducted in open reactors, which were irradiated with UV radiation. Method has been optimized as a result of studies on dye shade changes of Acid Orange 7 dye using the same method. In the result of studies, kinetics of reactions with suspended and immobilized catalyst were compared. Photocatalytic reaction with immobilization allows for lower catalyst use.

Fotokataliza zachodziła we wszystkich układach katalitycznych. Stwierdzono, że mieszanina TiO2/FeCl3 jest najbardziej efektywnym układem katalitycznym. Dynamika procesu fotokatalitycznego była charakterystyczna dla reakcji pierwszorzędowych.
The widespread use of chemotherapeutic carries with it many negative effects. They are used in veterinary, medicine, fish farming and the cultivation of plants. Sulfonamides are an example of such drugs. They are bacteriostatic chemotherapeutics, which are now mainly used in veterinary medicine. Cumulating at a variety of organisms, are often toxic to them. Aim is to find a variety of methods which prevent the increasing environmental pollution. One of the most effective methods is photocatalysis, which occurs with the participation of the catalyst in the presence of electromagnetic radiation. Organic compound subjected to photocatalysis is degraded, then undergoes the total mineralization. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the process of photocatalysis in the presence of selected sulfonamides using the selected catalytic systems. Photocatalytic processes have been studied using the catalyst TiO2-P25 Degussa Aeroxide®, and a mixture of FeCl3 and TiO2/FeCl3. Photocatalysis occurred in all the catalytic systems. It was found that the mixture TiO2/FeCl3 is the most efficient catalytic system. The dynamics of the process of photocatalytic reaction was typical for the first order reaction.

Opis:
An activated charcoal-TiO2 Catalyst was synthesized via the precipitation method and sonication technique, and three dyes: Reactive Black 5 (RB 5), Rhodamine B (Rh B) and Napthol Blue Black (NBB) were used to assess the quality of the product under UV-Light. The nanomaterial was also characterized by High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), elementary dispersive X-ray (EDX), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and UV-Vis DRS. The photodegradation of the three dyes when exposed to this nanomaterial indicate the superior photocatalytic activity of RB 5 as compared to the other dyes. A mechanism is proposed for the higher activity of AC-TiO2 than that of TiO2 nanocomposite material. Overall, this nanocomposite material was found to be highly stable and reusable. The nanomaterial is also economically of very low cost.

Opis:
The extraction of palm oil fruit (E. guineensis) is achieved by a combination of methods such as pressing, sterilizing, digesting, peeling, grading, purifying, and vacuum drying the extracted oil. This process requires excessive use of water and produces a large amount of wastewater with a high concentration of pollutants, called palm oil mill efluent (POME). This waste water is a high-viscosity liquid with a brown color and a temperature of 80–90 °C. It has a very low pH value, between 4.2–4.5, has a high chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, and is extremely toxic. POME treatment has adopted a variety of methods and technologies, including coagulation-flocculation, anaerobic-aerobic treatment and membrane technology. Biological treatment is mainly used to treat POME, and the POME treated through biological treatment is called palm oil mill secondary effluent (POMSE). Unfortunately, the treated wastewater still contains high concentrations of organic matter. The color of the effluent is still dark brown. The remaining pollutants from this biological process are generally difficult to degrade biologically, thus requiring suitable processing methods for its removal, so that it can be discharged to the environment safely or even reused orrecycled. One of the challenging processing methods is photocatalytic process. This method is able to utilize abundant resources in the form of sunlight, and is also effective to degrade a wide variety of recalcitrant organic pollutants in the wastewater. This paper presents the current research and development of photocatalytic degradation process for processing of palm oil mill secndary effluent. The review and analysis are focused on synthesis of photocatalyst and the photoreactor design. Based on the results of the literature review and analysis, some recommendations are formulated for future research for their application in advanced POMSE management so that it can be reused for various purposes.

Novel CdS/BiOI heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully prepared by facile method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, the Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, the Fourier transform infrared spectra, and photoluminescence. It was found that CdS nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of BiOI microspheres. The photodegradation tests showed that the photocatalytic efficiency was increased at first and then decreased when further increasing CdS content in the nanocomposites. The highest activity was obtained by 3%-CdS/BiOI nanocomposites. The enhanced photocatalytic performances were attributed to the matched band potentials of CdS and BiOI, which resulted in the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Based on the experimental results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of CdS/BiOI photocatalysts was also proposed.

Nano-sized Y- Ag doped and co-doped TiO2 particles were synthesized using the sol–gel method and Ti(OBu)4 as TiO2 precursor. Their structural and optical properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. The photocatalytic activity of these materials was investigated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction under visible light irradiation. Ground state diffuse reflectance absorption studies reveal that both Y and Ag dopant cause deviations of the band gap to higher energies attesting that co-doping the TiO2 with Y and Ag could enhance the photocatalytic activity by delaying the electron–hole recombination by means of higher energy band gaps. Co-doping TiO2 at a level of 4% (Y, Ag) samples leads to a significant decrease in the crystallite size of photocatalyst and containing both anatase and Ag/AgCl components. However, the high photocatalytic performance is attributed to an efficient electron-hole pairs separation at the photocatalyst interfaces in addition to localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag particles. The development of these visible light- activated nanocatalysts has the potential of providing environmentally benign routes for water treatment.

A ceria loaded carbon nanotubes (CeO2/CNTs) nanocomposites photocatalyst was prepared by chemical precipitation, and the preparation conditions were optimized using an orthogonal experiment method. HR-TEM, XRD, UV-Vis/DRS, TGA and XPS were used to characterize the photocatalyst. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption was employed to determine the BET specifi c surface area. The results indicated that the photocatalyst has no obvious impurities. CeO2 was dispersed on the carbon nanotubes with a good loading effect and high loading effi ciency without agglomeration. The catalyst exhibits a strong ability to absorb light in the ultraviolet region and some ability to absorb light in the visible light region. The CeO2/CNTs nanocomposites photocatalyst was used to degrade azo dye Acid Orange 7 (40 mg/L). The optical decolorization rate was 66.58% after xenon lamp irradiation for 4 h, which is better than that of commercial CeO2 (43.13%). The results suggested that CeO2 loading on CNTs not only enhanced the optical decolorization rate but also accelerated the separation of CeO2/CNTs and water.

The titania-silica aerogels obtained by a simple co-hydrolysis method was applied in the photodegradation of the model organic compound. Different ageing times and heat treatment temperatures were found to influence both the activity and the textural properties of the photocatalysts. The results reveal that the degradation percentage of AMOX is 93.12%, when optimal conditions of pH=5, 75 mg/l of TiO2, 400 mg/l of H2O2, and 10 mg/l of AMOX concentration at 150 min irradiation time were used. Furthermore, the model’s expected response results have reasonable similarity with the actual data (R2 = 93.58%), demonstrating the efficiency of this method in making an accurate prediction. A second-order polynomial multiple regression model was used to evaluate the responses, which confirms that was a satisfactory adjustment with the achieved data through analysis of variance (R2 = 93.58%, R2adj = 91.48% and R2pred =89.68%).
