Opis:
This article provides an extended synopsis of the author’s Ph.D. thesis Wokalowy system hornjoserbskeje rěče přitomnosće. The first part is devoted to selected methodology-related issues (e.g. the method of collecting recordings, approach to not adopted German words, the number of phonetic units researched). In part two, the author establishes an inventory of vowel phonemes of contemporary Upper Lusatian and the fundamental rules of reduction. Based on distribution analyses, including morpho(no)logical facts, the skill of identification and isolated pronunciation of vowel sounds as well as development trends, ten phonemes: /i, ɪ, e, ɛ, a, ɨ, ɔ, o, ʊ, u/ have been adopted in this article. In the third part, the author presents the results of acoustic research (with respect to timbre and inherent length, depending on accent and other factors). To a large extent, these results present an entirely different picture from the existing postulates based on auditive analyses. On top of that, certain linguistic universals are confirmed here. The last part offers a set of distinctive features. Following acoustic research, the author decided to adopt a binary [peripheral] feature and to apply gradual characteristics.

Opis:
This paper discusses the question of the adaptation of borrowings in Polish. In modern Polish borrowings can be different from native words in terms of phonotactics and the place of stress, rather than due to the existence of non-native phones which are not admitted in standard speech. This work aims to describe all the liaisons characteristic for borrowings but not appearing in native morphemes.

Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to establish, if the reflexes of *[kj, gj] in Central Kashubian (previously ʨ,ʥ], today [ʧ,ʤ] can be interpreted as allophones of /k,g/ betofe front vowels. This widespread hypothesis is supported by some very regular alternations. It is shown that the previously postulated phonological rule is not acceptable. There still exist some cases, where /k,g/ do not undergo palatalization and assibilation before front vowels, and for which no convincing additional rules can be established ) before the final -em, before the suffix -iw(a)-, in the equivalent of the Polish lexeme giąć, in some loanwords, which cannot be recognized as a result of codeswitching). In this case one hat to accept the existence of distinct phonemes /ʨ,ʥ/. In contemporary Central Kashubian the reflexes of *[kj, gj] underwent coalescence with these of *[ʧ,ʤ]. The latter do not show any significant distributive restrictions, and the mentioned phonological problem is in this case virtually irrelevant for the description of the contemporary stage of the language.

Geminates in the Slavic languagesThe subject of the article is the occurrence of geminates in Slavic languages. Research on the frequency of geminated consonants is based on 50-page texts read by native speakers. The results did not confirm the popular opinion that the occurrence vs. lack of geminates is a typological feature differentiating Slavic languages. The study showed, however, that today typologically significant difference between Slavic languages is the one in frequency of the occurrence of geminates. Geminaty w językach słowiańskichTematem artykułu jest występowanie geminat w językach słowiańskich. Badanie frekwencji geminat na podstawie pięćdziesięciostronicowych tekstów, czytanych przez rodzimych użytkowników języka, nie potwierdziło popularnej opinii, że występowanie vs. brak geminat stanowi cechę typologiczną, różnicującą języki słowiańskie. Badanie wykazało natomiast, że dziś typologicznie istotne są różnice we frekwencji występowania geminacji.

The philological pronunciation training is based on scientific knowledge from the field of phonology and phonetics, which are then worked out in the so-called phonodidactics. However, it is not uncommon for phonological approaches to be hardly applicable in foreign language didactics. In this context, the well-known theory of distinctive features is a prime example. In this article, principles are formulated that optimize the effectiveness of foreign language didactic phonetics.

Opis:
The aim of the present article is to provide a review and a critical assessment of current approaches to linguistic rhythm. At the perceptual level, languages are perceived to fall into three rhythmic groups: stress-timed, syllable-timed, and mora-timed. In stress-timed languages, stressed syllables are thought to occur at regular intervals of time, whereas in syllable-timed and mora-timed languages, syllables and moras are isochronous. Though numerous phonetic studies failed to confirm the objective existence of isochrony, there is ample evidence that rhythm plays a central role in language processing and that different languages have different underlying rhythmic structure. We argue that phonetically-based models which treat rhythm as an emergent property are insufficient to account for cross-linguistic variation and that the intuitive notion of rhythm should be explicitly modelled by drawing upon the concepts of a phonological theory.

Opis:
This article is dedicated to the vocalism of the contemporary Żarnowiec dialect (spoken in Wierzchucino and Nadole). On the one hand, an acoustic and phonetic analysis has identified certain phonetic archaisms (like the central or frontal and central pronunciation of /u/) and has aided in-depth descriptions of sounds previously referred to in a very imprecise way (*/aː/ pronounced as a near-close rounded vowel, central, [ɵ] type). On the other hand, the analysis has provided grounds for acknowledging the important phonetic changes which have occurred in the Kashubian dialect in the past few decades; some of these consist in completing specific phenomena. These include the general dissemination of the diphthongal pronunciation of stressed /e, o, ɛ, ɔ/, the highly back and rounded pronunciation of /ɒ/, the front and open pronunciation of /æ/ in Nadole and the extended scope of the phonological and phonetic reduction of non-stressed vowels (the phonemes /ɘ̟, ɛ, æ/ are always, /ɵ, e/ nearly always and /i/ is relatively rarely pronounced in the same way when not stressed). The result of this reduction is a distinctly centralized vowel or a central vowel of the [ɜ] type. From the phonological point of view, attention should be paid primarily to the ultimate loss of nasal vowel phonemes. Contrary to existing descriptions, the vocal continuant */ã/ has not been merged phonologically with /e/ but a new oral phoneme /ɘ̟/ has been established. It is worth emphasizing that a majority of the identified changes do not bring the dialect closer to the Polish language, rather, they take it further away from it.

One of the phonetic curiosities of the modern Spanish language is the occurrence of a group of voiced allophones [ ß, R, y] in its phonetic and phonological system, at present defined by Spanish specialists in phonetics as "aproximantes" which are the realisation of /b, d, g/ phonemes inside words and between words. The paper presents the acoustic and articulatory basis for their detachment from the group of the fricative allophones and a detailed way of articulation. The issue of their articulatory stabilisation within the system of standard and non-standard Spanish is also raised. Additionally, the author of the paper pays special attention to problems of articulation in the process of teaching the above-named allophones in phonetics classes designed for the students of the Spanish philology.c

The authors analyze the new book The place of the Macedonian phonetics within the Slavic and Balkan linguistic area from Irena Sawicka and Anna Cychnerska. The book is trying to shed new light on the place of Macedonian phonetics regarding its Slavic heritage and also regarding the contact changes that appeared during development of the Macedonian language in the Balkan linguistic league. Their research is conducted on Macedonian dialects represented in Common linguistic atlas (OLA) and in Phonological bases of the Macedonian dialects from B. Vidoeski. In their book, Sawicka and Cychnerska state that they use diachronic data, but their main goal is to present selected synchronic features from the Macedonian phonetics. They explain most of the phonetic features in Macedonian from an areal-typological aspect with special emphasis on the Balkan convergences. The authors of the book state that the Macedonian phonetic should be included in southwest type of Slavic phonetics. They conclude that the modern form of Macedonian phonetic, to large extent, was influenced by areal position of the Macedonian language and to its development in the Balkan multilingual territory.

Current Third Language Acquisition research has traditionally focused on the L2 status (e.g. Hammarberg 2001, Bardel & Falk 2007) or linguistic proximity (e.g. Cenoz 2001, Westergaard, Mitrofanova, Mykhaylyk & Rodina 2016). Limited research has been conducted on the influence of the potentially significant factor of level of proficiency, and particularly where proficiency in both the L2 (Tremblay 2006, Woll 2016) and the L3 (Hammarberg 2001, Wrembel 2010) may be considered as a conditioning factor for the shape of the L3. The aim of the current study was thus to determine the influence of L2 and L3 level of proficiency (L2LoP and L3LoP) and the interaction of the two factors on the production of the L3 Spanish apico-alveolar sibilant in a group of L1 Polish, L2 English and L3 Spanish trilinguals who had different levels of overall proficiency in the two foreign languages. The parameters of the sibilant under analysis were spectral moments: centre of gravity (M1), standard deviation (M2), skewness (M3) and kurtosis (M4) in intervocalic position in two-syllable words with initial stress. The results point to the influential role of both L2LoP and L3LoP as well as their interaction on the production of the L3 Spanish sibilant. When the level of proficiency in one of the languages was low, it allowed the other language with a higher level of proficiency to exert influence on the values of the spectral moments in the L3 sibilant. This interplay of factors furthers the understanding of how levels of proficiency in the L2 and the L3 condition the developing L3.

In relation to the differences of vocal systems of French and Polish language we suggest custom solutions on a didactic level.
