    Recent studies of short-term phonetic interference suggest that code-switching can lead to momentary increases in L1 influence on L2. In an earlier study using a single acoustic measure (VOT), we found that Czech EFL learners’ pronunciation of English voiceless stops had shorter, i.e. more L1-Czech-like, VOTs in code-switched compared to L2-only sentences. The first aim of the current study was to test the prediction that native listeners would judge the code-switched English productions as more foreign-accented than the L2-only productions. The results provide only weak support for this prediction. The second aim was to test whether more native-like VOT values would correlate with improved accentedness scores. This was confirmed for sentence-initial stops.

    Opis:
    The paper explores the origin of a foreign accent in non-native speech. Deviations from the pronun¬ciation norm in the articulation of English vowels and consonants by Ukrainian learners of English form a dynamic system of specific features correlating with the degree of foreign language competence. Phonetic interference of native language production and perception habits into the foreign language performance has its psychological and linguistic reasons. Divergence of phonological and phonetic features of native and foreign languages, automated articulations transferred into the foreign speech shape the specific character of the foreign accent. The contrastive analysis of the articulatory bases of English and Ukrainian as well as the analysis of actual phonetic deviations enabled to single out salient features of Ukrainian English accent.

    Opis:
    Der folgende Beitrag widmet sich der Vermittlung des Deutschen als Tertiärsprache (L3) nach Englisch (L2). Diese Sprachenkonstellation ist für den Fremdsprachenunterricht für polnische Lerner typisch. Besonderes Augenmerk ist hierbei auf den Erwerb der Aussprache zu richten: Einerseits werden einzelne auf Grund von Unterrichtsbeobachtung sowie auditiver Analyse gewonnene Beispiele für potentielle, durch die Interferenz aus der L2 in die L3 bedingte Abweichungen in der Zielsprache (Tertiärsprache Deutsch) zusammengestellt. Andererseits soll die bedeutende Rolle positiven Transfers im phonetischen Training hervorgehoben werden.
    Przedłożony tekst poświęcony jest tematyce nauczania języka niemieckiego jako języka tercjalnego (L3) po języku angielskim (jako L2). Taka konstelacja językowa przeważa na lekcjach języka obcego dla Polaków. W centrum rozważań znajduje się akwizycja wymowy: zestawiono tu potencjalne odstępstwa od wymowy standardowej języka docelowego, u których źródła leżą zjawiska interferencji fonetycznej z języka angielskiego (L2). Ponadto na uwagę zasługuje tzw. transfer pozytywny, który w przypadku kształcenia poprawności fonetycznej również odgrywa znaczącą rolę.  
    The following article deals with the classroom learning of German as the third language (L3) after English as the second language (L2) on the example of Polish learners, who typically represent this order of acquisition. A central subject matter in this context is the acquisition of pronunciation. Pronunciation errors supposed to reflect an interference from English as L2 on German as L3 are exemplified on the basis of observations made during German lessons, and an auditive analysis of a data sample. At the same time, the study exposes a significant role of positive transfer in phonetic training.

    The article deals with phonetic mistakes made by the students of Polish at The University of Veliko Turnovo (Bulgaria). The research covers over 50 students who studied Polish in 2008–2012, with the main focus on the recurrent mistakes and their sources. Language interference is the cause of the most frequent mistakes, such as the reduction of unstressed vowels, the confusion of [ł], [l] i [ṷ], the reduction in articulation of the geminates into one short sound, incorrect palatalisation or dispalatalisation of consonants. Another source of these mistakes lies in the difficulties in recognition and articulation of sounds that do not exist in Bulgarian: nasal vowels, [y], alveolo- palatals [ś], [ź], and the affricates [ć] and [1].

    Opis:
    The classifications of errors made by foreigners learning Polish as a foreign language are usually based on either those typical for native users of the Polish language (e.g. by A. Markowski) or on the possible interferences (e.g. by H. Komorowska). Since the terms glottodidactic error and glottodidactic norm have been proposed, errors began to be analyzed individually, with consideration of the interlanguage, which however resulted in the simplification of their description. The phonic system of the language proved to be particularly problematic since phonetic variation does not translate into variation in language norm (even if we take into consideration the distinction between the model norm and utilitarian norm). Phonetic mistakes have also recently gained the attention of speech therapist, whose approach – though scientifically valuable – raises certain doubts. The aim of the article is to contribute to the discussions on the perception of phonetic mistakes in foreigners.
    Klasyfikacje błędów popełnianych przez cudzoziemców uczących się języka polskiego jako obcego oparte są zazwyczaj albo na podziałach typowych dla polszczyzny (np. za A. Markowskim), albo na ujęciach interferencyjnych (np. za H. Komorowską). Odkąd ukute zostały terminy norma glottodydaktyczna i błąd glottodydaktyczny, uchybienia zaczęły być rozpatrywane bardzo indywidualnie, z uwzględnieniem interjęzyka uczących się, co jednak spowodowało uproszczenia w ich opisie. Wyjątkowo trudny w opracowaniu zdaje się podsystem foniczny języka polskiego, którego wariantywność form nie przekłada się na odpowiednie zróżnicowanie normy (nawet przy dwubiegunowości wzorcowej i użytkowej). Błędy wymowy cudzoziemców zaczęły ostatnio być również przedmiotem zainteresowania logopedii, lecz choć poczytuje się to jako cenne naukowo, to nie bez zastrzeżeń przyjmuje się wszelkie współczesne koncepcje. Celem artykułu jest zabranie głosu w dyskusji na temat sposobu postrzegania błędów fonetycznych popełnianych przez obcokrajowców.

    Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego nauczanie wymowy polskiej postrzegane jest przez lektorów jako trudne i czym według nich najczęściej jest to implikowane. Skorzystano z ankiet, którymi przebadano 56 nauczycieli pracujących w kraju lub za granicą. Analiza miała służyć sprecyzowaniu tzw. miejsc trudnych w nauczaniu wymowy i rozwijaniu słuchu mownego cudzoziemców uczących się języka polskiego jako obcego, uściśleniu najczęściej popełnianych (a przynajmniej przez lektorów wychwytywanych) błędów fonetycznych charakterystycznych dla konkretnych narodowości (elementów płaszczyzn segmentalnej lub suprasegmentalnej języka) oraz zebraniu opinii na temat skuteczności technik wykorzystywanych przez ankietowanych podczas prowadzenia zajęć.
    In the article, the author addresses the question why teaching Polish pronunciation to foreigners is considered difficult by language teachers and what are the possible reasons of this difficulty. The research was based on 56 questionnaires completed by the teachers working in Poland and abroad. The analysis was aimed at specifying the areas of potential difficulty in teaching pronunciation to foreigners and itemizing the most frequent pronunciation errors distinctive for particular nationalities and language groups (the elements of both segmental and suprasegmental level of language). The author also intended to collect the teachers’ opinions on the effectiveness of particular teaching techniques that are being used in the process of teaching.
