Opis:
The subject of the article is a discussion of methodology of history of philosophy in Poland. In particular, the value of the inspiring role of the intellectual history in practicing history of philosophy understood as the history of philosophical culture is defended. To do this, on the one hand S. Swieżawski’s theory of philosophical historiography is referred to Swieżawski, following É. Gilson, postulated the idea of philosophically understood history of philosophy in the form of analyses of philosophical problems, significant for practicing philosophy understood systematically. However, on the other hand it has been noticed that in Swieżawski’s theory and research practice elements of history of philosophical culture can be noticed, among others those formulated and practiced by the so-called Warsaw school of historians of the idea. Considering the methodology of history of philosophy in Poland the school pointed to the significance of the history of the Polish philosophical culture. It concentrated not so much on original and influential works in the history of philosophy, as on the abounding philosophical literature. And it is this literature that without claiming epoch-making originality, is often a testimony to a reliable philosophical method; and also it has been an inspiration for the national culture.

The article attempts to connect two dimensions of studies on Georg Simmel: reflection of his influence on the creation of sociology as a scholarly discipline as well as his interest In language and estheticism. In depth analysis of a chapter from Simmel's seminal work 'Sociology' the author will present the existing correlation between the search for new areas for research and looking for a new language suitable for their description.

Author tells the story of his close and very long-lasting acquaintance with Leszek Kołakowski as well as commentates on his intellectual biography and achievements as political and literary essayist, philosopher, historian of ideas, and public figure. In particular he describes in details the first half of Kołakowski’s life, namely the period when he made his long journey from being communist in his student years to becoming as a young scholar the leading figure of Marxist revisionism in the late fifties and after a time a principled critic of Marxism itself and a fervent anti-communist. In many respects Kołakowski’s itinerary was not exceptional but it had at least two noteworthy characteristics. First, in opposition to quite a few other cases his way away from communism turned out to be scholarly fruitful as it resulted in an uniquely in-depth historical research covering the founders, the golden age and the breakdown of so called “scientific socialism” (his voluminous work Main Currents of Marxism remains one of the best and the most comprehensive monographs of the topic). Second, Kołakowski’s abandoning of his former Weltanschauung was followed by his discovery of religion as an extremely important part of human experience and sine qua non condition of the survival of civilization permanently menaced by barbarians. However it is to be doubt whether he may be considered as a convert or a religious thinker in the strict sense of the word since he believed in horrors of the absence of God rather than in the real presence of his in the world. As defender of transcendence and tradition Kołakowski certainly became a kind of catholic-Christian without denomination but as a critical philosopher remained at the same time highly sceptical about everything. Dreaming of solid fundamentals he was all his life an uncompromising enemy of any fundamentalism. Being nostalgic about the Absolute he was incurable antiabsolutist.

In the article "Identity and the contemporary media" the author reflects on the subject of influence of new technologies on the contemporary man’s spiritual life. She discusses the issue of creation of an individual identity in the context determined by cultural anthropology, sociology and philosophy. The author asks about the possibilities and ways of identity creation in the conditions of fluidity, variability and instability of the world. Looking for elements which can be recognized as constant in the identity subject, she introduces constitutive features of a discursive (by A. Giddens) and deictic (by modifying Lacan’s theory) subject.

The text attempts to answer the question whether musicians need a philosophy of music. The answer to the question of what music contributes to philosophy - a question superordinate in relation to the investigations of the links between philosophy and music - can be formulated clearly, since we find it in the texts of the most prominent representatives of European philosophical thought, including Schopenhauer, whose ideas are discussed in the paper. These issues are also discussed in literature which explores philosophical issues, by such classics of the genre as Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse, whose profound descriptions bring us closer to an understanding of that which music does directly, by expressing spheres beyond words that cannot be expressed otherwise than through music. Karl Popper regards polyphony as the greatest discovery of European culture, and provides evidence of the closeness of science and philosophy. These three levels of approaching the relationship between philosophy and music lead to demonstrating the axiological essence of music, revealed by performers, who make it possible for music to exist to the full in its sonority, unveiling its metaphysical perfection to its listeners.

The paper concerns the inseparable, in my opinion, connection between communication and the philosophy of nature. Studies on communication, which are growing expansively, neglect, to a bigger or lesser degree, its biological dimension. Instead, they focus on the cultural, sociological, and political aspects. Furthermore, philosophers are relatively rarely concerned with communication, since they treat it, not without good reasons, as one of many cognitive processes. Problems of communication are almost entirely non-existent in the philosophy of nature, too. Admittedly, the situation is slowly changing. More and more scholars and philosophers recognizing that in the research practice the problems of philosophy and science are intertwined notice the relevance of the issues of communication and communicating. However, the research on communication is still dominated by humanists, who either neglect or completely ignore its biological component. In the article I try to show that communication is an ideal object of common research for scientists and humanists, as well as philosophers and philosophers of nature. Communication is an ontologically complex being containing the biological and cultural component. Omitting either of these components leads to a one-sided, and thus false, view on communication.

The subject of the article are self-destructive tendencies in the contemporary European culture. An indication of the observation of these tendencies are among others: thesis F. Fukuyama about the end of philosophy, cultural catastrophism of A. Bobkowski, W. Gombrowicz and Cz. Miłosz. In the sphere of the highbrow culture these tendencies are reinforced by postmodernism. Their result is a reduction the level of the political class, pandering to average tastes and the dominance of the mass culture. The author called this culture as a “ochlocracy”. These tendencies are leading to the disappearance of virtue of the solidarity and the responsibility as well as the public trust. It indicates the disintegration of the society.

The paper presents a short survey of standpoints in the philosophy of science related to the problem of the philosophical assumptions of science. These assumptions refer to the special kind of philosophical beliefs that scientists might not be aware of and that create a peculiar foundation of their work. The paper represents the point of view of culture studies. In this framework, science is described as one of the spheres of culture. The metaphysical assumptions of scientific theories as reconstructed by some philosophers are briefly presented. Scientific studies, as seen from the culture studies perspective, treat both philosophy and science as the spheres of culture. In respect to this view, the paper scrutinizes the historically changing philosophical concepts of science (from those, which perceive science as an autonomous system to those that stress its relations to other socio-cultural phenomena) as well as some controversial issues related to the problem of the philosophical assumptions of science.

Opis:
Christian theology often is called Christianized philosophy. However in the early centuries of Christianity Christianwriters don’t refer to the ancient philosophy positively. The philosophy was a relic of paganism, and treated it’s teachingsas vain and chattery philosophical views. The first Christian writers had to face up with philosophy, so many of them critically or positively wrote about it. The first time apostle Paul came into contact with philosophers during his stay in Athens. Apologists then went on to write about the philosophers just as later the Fathers of the Church drew inspiration from ancient philosophy as well. In their opinion theology and philosophy differed from each other like the truth from the belief. Revealed in Scripture the knowledge about God is truth, because it was proclaimed by the prophets and apostles, which was inspired of the Holy Spirit. They didn’t speak from himself, but God spoke through them. But philosophers trusted their own mind and were seeking knowledge about the beginning, about truth, about God etc. Since the first century, Christian theology and philosophy saw this bond of “mutual understanding” unite them to this day.

Opis:
Hildegarda z Bingen to jedna z najbardziej wpływowych postaci w dwunastowiecznej myśli chrześcijańskiej.
Hildegard of Bingen was one of the most influential figures of 12th century Christianity. She is the author of a very original vision of the world, in which anthropology and Christian cosmology are intertwined with philosophical ideas, mainly Platonism and Neo-Platonism. Currently her diverse works are the subject of detailed theological and philosophical research; as it turns out, Hildegard was not only the author of interesting theological syntheses, but she also knew and incorporated many philosophical views, mainly Christian Neo-Platonism. The article outlines the current research on the philosophical works of Hildegard of Bingen, and shows the various ways in which her works have been interpreted. The article presents the latest and most important concepts for interpreting her views. The article’s main objective is to present the possibility of a new interpretation of Hilgedard’s thoughts, through the prism of Christian Neo-Platonism and mainly the thoughts of Johannes Scotus Eriugena.

The article concerns Thomas Mann’s view on culture and on anthropology. The analyses of the works by the German writer point at the relations between his conception and Fridrich Schiller’s conception of man as a sensuous and sprititual being. Mann’s works, such as Death in Venice or The Magic Mountain are the literary equivalent of the unfinished essay on aesthetics On Spirit and Art. The author stresses the important role of eroticism in the description of culture. Eroticism should be conceived in a wide sense, not only in relation to bodily desire, but as a basis of aesthetic experience. Seen from this angle, Mann’s writings contain a series of reflections about culture and about man, reflections rooted in the modern conceptions presented by Kant and Schiller and later developed by contemporary psychoanalysis and the philosophy of existence.

The paper aims at grasping Henryk Elzenberg’s thought on human condition on both social and universal level. By showing an individual in the world doomed to relations Elzenberg tries to analyse distortion and over-interpretations of impulses coming both from human psyche and from civilization. By stigmatization of the shallowness of life and omnipresent utilitarianism he wants to find an alternative to raise the man to higher level, to salvation. For this he proposes focusing on perfect values, independent from man. Noticing the difference between the nature of human and other creatures he highlights the role discovering one’s personal capacities and the necessity of gathering them in what is called culture. Setting as the demand the turn first in mind, related to deepening of self-consciousness, and then also spiritual, he sets alternative roads of experiencing the world, both that given in senses and alternative-one. All of his ideas are ways of building humanity to be more essential and rewarding.

In this article author traces relation between argumentation and cultural practice. The first part focuses on definition of argumentation in informal logic tradition. In particular, it discusses argument in terms of verbal and social activity involving the use of everyday language. Author claims that there is no argumentation beyond language. The second part explains persuasive argumentation as a form of cultural practice. The persuasive arguments found in “social practice” can be understood as a social activity, analysable within the context of a given cultural system. Author refers to an approach taking the argumentative expression as a certain type of communicative practice, directed towards respecting, recognising or accepting specific actions. The inclusion of persuasive argumentation in the “circuit of cultural activities” to be studied makes it possible to compare this type of argumentation with other social practices, and to posit a clear historical dimension in the study of argumentation. It also makes it possible to view persuasive argumentation as one of many cultural activities aimed at changing or perpetuating behaviours, attitudes, thinking, etc. The third part of the paper concerns the problem of humanistic interpretation of persuasive argumentation. Author attempts to develop this intuition, at the same time demonstrating the problems that arise from this approach. In conclusion, author tries to analyze argumentation in terms of culture theory and humanistic interpretation.

The title indicates the position of pedagogy from the view of philosophy of being and corresponding philosophical anthroplogy. The division between general and particular pedagogy results from the reference to the truth about man and the culture showing pedagogy as a set of relations between teacher (teacher) and the student. The basic principle, and also the task of education is the wisdom of the merging truth and goodness. From the principle the faith and patience follow. Faith is the contribution of the intellect in education, and patience is the improvement of the will. The principles of particular pedagogy follow from these three principles. In the area of faith relied on truth there are a humility and obedience, and in the area of patience relief on god there are mortification and poverty. These terms are explained in the article, because in the common usage they are misunderstood. Obedience and poverty which are mentioned at the end of the article are a measure of the degree of education. These principles of pedagogy are the result of the research work of Professor Mieczyslaw Gogacz and his disciples. They constitute a proposal to build the pedagogy concerning a man.
