The text outlines the conception of subjectivity that the philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) presented in his work published 100 years ago: Spirit of Utopia (Geist der Utopie, 1918). After a short reconstruction of the context in which this conception arose (the reception of German idealistic thought: Kant and Hegel, the discussions with the philosopher and poetess Margarete Susman and others) the paper describes its elaboration in the work of Bloch (Traces, 1930, Heritage of Our Times, 1936), its receptions and criticisms (for example the narrative counterproposals by Siegfried Kracauer and Bert Brecht) as well as some transcultural affinities (among others with Stanisław Brzozowski, a Polish philosopher of culture).

The paper aims at grasping Henryk Elzenberg’s thought on human condition on both social and universal level. By showing an individual in the world doomed to relations Elzenberg tries to analyse distortion and over-interpretations of impulses coming both from human psyche and from civilization. By stigmatization of the shallowness of life and omnipresent utilitarianism he wants to find an alternative to raise the man to higher level, to salvation. For this he proposes focusing on perfect values, independent from man. Noticing the difference between the nature of human and other creatures he highlights the role discovering one’s personal capacities and the necessity of gathering them in what is called culture. Setting as the demand the turn first in mind, related to deepening of self-consciousness, and then also spiritual, he sets alternative roads of experiencing the world, both that given in senses and alternative-one. All of his ideas are ways of building humanity to be more essential and rewarding.

Chinese Communist monocultural policies, notably the re-education camps for the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, have recently been condemned for violating human rights. In response to critics, the Chinese Communist Party frequently replied that one should not impose Western concepts of democracy, liberty, and human rights on the Chinese people. Nevertheless, instead of introducing Western philosophies criticizing the current Chinese Communist monoculturalism; with the help of a modern reinterpretation of the Classic of Rites, this paper aims to construct a Confucian Multiculturalism and argues that: (1) the Classic of Rites explicitly warned against cultural assimilations of “barbarians” into the “civilized” Empire, (2) the Classic of Rites acknowledges cultural diversities, and (3) although the Classic of Rites does not explain clearly why the imperial court should tolerate cultural diversities, a Kantian reinterpretation of the Chinese concept of 敬 Jing implies the respects for minority rights. In doing so, this paper formulates Confucian Multiculturalism as a new model of the Chinese philosophy of culture which asserts cultural diversity.

In the present paper, the author aims at laying the foundations of a symbolics of technical gesture, according to the thesis that symbolic faculty is another face of the technological one, and that they are both in truth two sides of the same coin. Accordingly, the author suggests to rename the whole dimension as “meta-environmentality”. The analysis is carried out on the basis of a specific comparison between Cassirer’s definition of “animal symbolicum” and its scientific consistence in the light of modern palaeontology. “Animal symbolicum” is here compared with Leroi-Gourhan’s homo technologicus, and Cassirer’s ideas on human identity tested starting from paleoanthropological data. The result of the inquiry lead us to recognize the urgency of integrating Cassirer’s argument with the primacy of the technological capacity, but a deep analysis of the characterizing attributes of the latter compels us to uphold the symbolic attitude of the technological dimension. The author then sketches a basic description ofthe guidelines of a symbolic theory of technology (especially §§ 6-7), and tries to show how the basic elements of such an approach were familiar both to Cassirer and Leroi-Gourhan. As a consequence of the whole theory, the author elaborates a chronological analysis of human identity, whose basic result is the determination of the future as main temporal dimension of human acting.

The article concerns Thomas Mann’s view on culture and on anthropology. The analyses of the works by the German writer point at the relations between his conception and Fridrich Schiller’s conception of man as a sensuous and sprititual being. Mann’s works, such as Death in Venice or The Magic Mountain are the literary equivalent of the unfinished essay on aesthetics On Spirit and Art. The author stresses the important role of eroticism in the description of culture. Eroticism should be conceived in a wide sense, not only in relation to bodily desire, but as a basis of aesthetic experience. Seen from this angle, Mann’s writings contain a series of reflections about culture and about man, reflections rooted in the modern conceptions presented by Kant and Schiller and later developed by contemporary psychoanalysis and the philosophy of existence.

The essay presents an attempt at characterizing contemporary music’s culture by identifying a dialectical tension between “modern” and “postmodern” currents in it. After initial considerations on the manifold usages of the term “postmodernism,” five composers’ approaches will be analyzed: John Cage, Philip Glass (and other minimalists), Bernhard Lang, Mauricio Kagel and Johannes Kreidler. However different they may be from one another, all these composers are being interpreted as undermining, in various ways, the practice and theoretical background of modernist avant-garde music.

Philosophy of culture as a discipline exploring the way of human existence in the world is based on general metaphysics and philosophical anthropology. Taking into account the formal subject and the method, philosophy of culture is a type of metaphysical explanation that aims to indicate the final ontological reasons for the existence of culture, and therefore it is called the “metaphysics of culture.” The metaphysical perspective of explaining the phenomenon of culture is an original contribution to the contemporary discourse on culture. The understanding of culture requires solving the dispute about the understanding of the world, and above all about the understanding of human being. It is only in such a broad perspective that a fact of culture can be justified by pointing to its causative, exemplary and deliberate cause. in this context, the special attractiveness of the metaphysics of culture is revealed, which, paradoxically, manifests itself in the lack of autonomy in relation to general metaphysics and philosophical anthropology. Thanks to this, explanation of a fact of culture is placed in the field of cognitive realism, pluralism and in the context of understanding human being as a person. in this way, the metaphysics of culture provides a final justification (in the ontic order) of a fact of culture, while culture, as an intellectualization of nature, can form the basis for the particular aspects present in such rich forms in the area of the particular sciences.

Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) legacy in the texts of the prominent protestant theologian, religious and cultural philosopher Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923) could not be overlooked. Troeltsch, together with Adolf von Harnack (1851-1930) and Wilhelm Herrmann (1846-1922), belongs to the main circle of representatives of the Cultural Protestantism. In his analysis of the reasons and consequences of social and cultural changes and ruptures occurring at the beginning of the 20th century, Nietzsche’s philosophy became one of the main references to Troeltsch. Also Nietzsche’s attempts to overcome the menacing nihilism as a result of the decline of Christian faith has a strong influence on Troeltsch’s ethical studies. In its first part the article discusses the criticism of Nietzsche’s esthetical ethics performed by Troeltsch. The second part is dedicated to the concept of Troeltsch’s idea of History. The third part presents Troeltsch’s understanding of sense and senselessness.
W artykule omawiono recepcję idei niemieckiego filozofa Fryderyka Nietzschego (1844-1900) w pismach teologa, filozofa religii i kultury Ernsta Troeltscha (1865-1923). Wpływ ten jest nie do przecenienia. Troeltsch obok Adolfa von Harnacka (1851-1930) i Wilhelma Herrmanna (1846-1922) należy do czołowych przedstawicieli protestantyzmu kulturowego. Artykuł analizuje powody i konsekwencje zmian społecznych i kulturowych, jakie miały miejsce na początku XX wieku. W tym kontekście, idee Nietzschego jawią się jako jedna z głównych inspiracji twórczości Troeltscha. Próby Nietzschego pokonania grożącego nihilizmu, będącego wynikiem upadku wiary chrześcijańskiej, mają również silny wpływ na studia Troeltscha nad etyką. W artykule omówiono najpierw krytykę estetycznej etyki Nietzschego przeprowadzoną przez Troeltscha. Druga cześć poświęcona jest troeltschowskiej koncepcji etycznej historii. Część trzecia zdaje relację z metafizyki historii, w której sens przeplata się z bezsensem.

The author of the article describes the effects of the personalized advertising of the iPhone X and considers the functional world of smartphones – the essence of this device and the spiritual and physiological changes caused by it. Hand-held smartphones have become a tool and object shaping the personality and character of the cybercommunication user, separating him from classic analogue communications and body spectacles. The cultural and marketing principles of this new type of social communication were pointed out in May 1998 by Steve Jobs. According to personalized advertising, iPhone X is a medium with an aesthetic graphic interface and communication applications. Definitions and expansive practices of contemporary design are as unobvious as the concept of the Internet. Apple has translated the power of design into an effective marketing strategy and philosophy of culture. To put it simply, design recreates and consolidates communication, while art initiates and inspires it. But design is also the language of the individual but contextualized choices. In summary, appleization is a marketed culture format. First of all, it means to design sales. In fact, Apple proposed, by presenting the iMac, iPod, iPhone and – iPad, all consistently designed by Jonathan Ive, a pro-social marketing strategy, personalizing advertising, employer branding as the philosophy of the organization, and original typography as the basis of the company’s communication and off-line-user experience, unboxing rituals, and product placement; these are selected examples of professional activity, whose aim is to build the philosophy of a modern brand and, as a consequence, to remodel the user’s awareness. Therefore, if we recognize that the essence of the cult of (each) brand lies in the image and product creation, Apple supports this cult by drawing on synergy of employer and personal branding. Design is not so much a global philosophy as it is a part of the process, a fragment of such branding, which is one of the lifestyle paradigms.

This essay describes the impact of COVID-19 related policies on the democratic fabric of German society, focusing the situation of children. It applies a methodology of ethics for salutogenesis, exploring, how policies and underlying motifs align with doing the right things for the right reasons. Five key areas are analyzed in the social-political specter of power of health-related judgement, connecting psychology, politics, economy, academia and culture. The discussion finds that the crisis reveals grave and basic flaws in the texture of democratic culture that could be healed by serious measures to reinvigorate the spirit of the German Constitution.

Wilhelm Feldman – a writer, publicist, literary critic, activist and political thinker, legendary editor of “Krytyka” in Kraków – was also an initiator and participant in many Young Poland discussions. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the basic ideas and intuitions present in Feldman’s major historical works and minor sketches. The author argues that they are philosophical in nature and form a coherent position. His philosophy combines romantic inspirations with the positivist programme of organic work and with elements of independence socialism, constituting an important element in the philosophical thought of Polish modernism in Galicia.
Wilhelm Feldman – pisarz, publicysta, krytyk literacki, działacz i myśliciel polityczny, legendarny redaktor krakowskiej „Krytyki”, był inicjatorem i uczestnikiem wielu młodopolskich dyskusji. Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji podstawowych idei i intuicji obecnych w głównych pracach historycznych Feldmana i pomniejszych szkicach. Autor twierdzi, że mają one charakter filozoficzny i tworzą spójne stanowisko. Jego filozofia łączy inspiracje romantyczne z pozytywistycznym programem pracy u podstaw oraz z elementami socjalizmu niepodległościowego, stanowiąc ważny element myśli filozoficznej polskiego modernizmu w Galicji.

Sądzę jednak, iż ważniejszą częścią tego artykułu są nie tyle zawarte w nim analizy, co postawione pytania. Mam nadzieję, że zainteresują one Czytelnika tematem i pobudzą do filozoficznej refleksji.
The purpose of this text is an attempt to answer the question “What distinguishes a man against other species?” In this context, I discuss Richard Dawkins’s theory of memes and consider the issues related to it, referring (to a greater or lesser degree) to the thoughts of authors such as Mariusz Biedrzycki, Goeffrey Miller, Karl Popper, and Norbert Elias. I think, however, that a more important part of this article is not the analyses contained in it, but the posted questions. I hope that they will interest the reader with the subject and stimulate them to philosophical reflections.

W podjętej analizie skupiono się na renesansie i eksplozji globalnej popularności sieci parków rozrywki oraz gier komputerowych w kontekście biznesu i edukacji. Opracowanie wskazuje na istotne znaczenie ramowego katalogu kompetencji cyfrowych oraz dominacji konsumpcyjno-produkcyjnego pojmowania kultury w społeczeństwie informacyjnym jako niezbędnych elementów świadomości rozwoju we współczesnym świecie zdominowanym przez technologie ICT.
The elaboration is a synthesis of the consequences of ICT applications in the culture of the information society, particularly in entertainment. These consequences are related to the philosophy of culture and philosophy of technology, and previous authors’ studies. The analysis has focused on renaissance and the explosion of popularity of the global network of amusement parks and computer games in the context of business and education. The study shows the importance of the framework directory of digital skills, and the dominance of consumers understanding of culture in the information society as essential elements of development consciousness in the contemporary world dominated by ICT.

The aim of this article is to briefly outline my own cognitive experience, characterized by knowledge transfer and aesthetic experience, which arises from making BioArt. Specifically, I do nature photography, using the micro-photography technique. In this article, I distinguish – in terms of methodology and value - between interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and the postulate of transdisciplinary research, which leads me to reject the so-called plantality model - a linguistic concept employed by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari (Rhizome). I argue for a critical approach to this line of post-humanist reflection on non-human life that is not characterized by knowledge transfer. The article includes a report on the course of my research (parts 2 and 3), and a reflection of its relevance to the philosophy of art and philosophy of culture (parts 1, 3, 3.1, 4). The report from my own research and artistic activity includes a description of the transformation of my working space, the process of acquiring new disciplinary tools and skills - an experience that I call a change of attitude - and a presentation of nature microphotography (mainly plant photography). I provide a technical commentary on the presented photographs with regard to the process of their creation (e.g. botanical and optical information related to the microscopic slides and equipment), as well as philosophical comments. The philosophical reflection includes the postulate of alterity, which, in my view, is endemic to post-humanist thought, as well as a postulate called the primacy of abstraction, which reflects the non-naturalistic, anti-illustrative, and interpretative character of artistic microphotography (in contrast to the illustrative nature of “the plantality discourse of philosophy”).

Die Wertekrise wird im Artikel als Ergebnis des Zerfalls der vormodernen Gesellschaft bezeichnet, gleichzeitig auch als Ergebnis der Unfähigkeit der Gegenwart, die Wertesysteme aufgrund der sich dynamisch vollziehenden kulturellen Veränderungen zu festigen. Als Anlass zum Nachdenken gilt die Konvention der romantischen Liebe in der vormodernen Gesellschaft, ihr Zerfall und Verschwinden, was eine völlig andere gegenwärtige Stellung des Individuums als eines Subjekts aufzeigt, das über seine Gefühle, Fähigkeiten, Kompetenzen und letztendlich seine eigenen biografischen Entscheidungen verfügt.
The crisis of values is considered in this paper as a consequence of pre-modern society’s disintegration. It is also attributed to the fact that modern times are not conducive to consolidating value systems due to ongoing dynamic cultural transformations. Such conclusions are drawn by taking up the case of romantic love convention, its disintegration and atrophy in pre-modern society. Shown against this background is an entirely different present-day situation of individuals as subjects in control of their emotions, abilities as well competences and ultimately their own life choices.
Kryzys wartości jest określany w artykule jako efekt rozpadu społeczeństwa przednowoczesnego i jednocześnie jako rezultat niezdolności współczesności do utrwalenia systemów wartości ze względu na dynamicznie przebiegające zmiany kulturowe. Pretekstem do rozważań jest konwencja miłości romantycznej w społeczeństwie przednowoczesnym, jej rozpad i zanik, ukazując całkowicie odmienną współczesną pozycję jednostki jako podmiotu zarządzającego swoimi emocjami, zdolnościami kompetencjami i – ostatecznie – własnymi wyborami biograficznymi.

Max Scheler seems to present two distinct approaches to philosophy of culture. In the early period of his Formalismus in der Ethik und die materiale Wertethik and “Ordo Amoris,” he describes cultures as being defined by their distinct order of value preferencings. In his later period of his “Probleme einer Soziologie des Wissens,” however, Scheler explains the dynamics of culture in terms of the interaction of what he calls “real” and “ideal sociological factors,” rooted in various drives (Triebe) and spirit (Geist), respectively. These approaches are fully compatible and complementary, the former describing culture’s vertical structure and the latter, its horizontal structure. Together these two approaches offer a comprehensive philosophy of culture, deserving greater attention.

В статье автор анализирует концепцию философии культуры (т.е. культурософии) Анджея Л. Захариаша, которая является частью системы под названием анателизм. Он выделяет три вида отношений между цивилизацией и культурой. Концепция А.Л. Захариаша принадлежит третьему виду, согласно которому цивилизация является частью более широкой целостности – культуры. Понятия цивилизации и культуры автор анализирует в контексте глобализации, а она в свою очередь трактуется в контексте культурософии.
The author analyzes the Andrzej L. Zachariasz’s concept of the philosophy of culture, i.e. kulturozofia, which is the part of the philosophical system called anatelizm. The three kinds of relations between the civilization and the culture are distinguished. The concept of culture by A.L. Zachariasz belongs to the third one, which defines the civilization as a part of a bigger entity called culture. The notions of civilization and culture are analyzed in the context of globalization, which in its turn are seen in the context of ‘kulturozofia’.

Pojęcie „kultury wychowania” traktuję w kategoriach umownego konstruktu teoretycznego, dzięki któremu ujęte są, z punktu widzenia myślenia i działania pedagogicznego, swoiste sensy i znaczenia. Przestrzenna metafora drogi okrężnej stanowi tu heurystyczny trop w próbie ujęcia owych sensów i znaczeń. W tym kontekście: 1) odróżniam zakresy znaczeniowe metafor drogi bezpośredniej, drogi na skróty, drogi okrężnej oraz drogi donikąd, 2) przywołuję wybrane kulturowo-filozoficzne zastosowania toposu drogi okrężnej, 3) dookreślam pojęcia homo culturalis oraz mondo civile z perspektyw pojęcia kultury jako drogi okrężnej. To zaś jest podstawą do ujęcia samej kultury wychowania poprzez: 1) sformułowanie założeń określających rozumienie tego pojęcia z perspektywy metafory drogi okrężnej, 2) określenie egzystencjalnego etosu, wyrażonego w nastawieniach i racjach myślenia i działania pedagogicznego, 3) wyodrębnienie czterech postaci racjonalizacji i utrwalania egzystencjalnych habitusów w ramach oddziaływań pedagogicznych.
I treat the concept of “culture of education” in terms of contractual, theoretical construct, which presents specific meanings and significances from the point of view of pedagogical thinking and action. The spatial metaphor of a detour is a heuristic clue in an attempt to approach these significances and meanings. In this context: 1) I distinguish between the meaning of metaphors of a direct road, a shortcut, a detour and a road to nowhere, 2) I recall selected cultural and philosophical applications of a detour topos, 3) I clarify the concepts of homo culturalis and mondo civile from the point of view of culture as a detour. This is a basis for recognition the culture of education by: 1) formulation the guidelines for defining the understanding of this concept from the perspective of a detour metaphor, 2) definition of existential ethos, expressed in attitudes and reasons of pedagogical thinking and actions, 3) separation four forms of rationalization and preservation of existential habitus within the educational interactions.

The article focuses on the issue of cultural space of a literary work in academic research of Dmytro Chyzhevsky (1894–1977), an outstanding Slavist and philosopher. Scientific heritage of Dmytro Chyzhevsky permits to consider him as a philosopher of culture. He interpreted and studied different aspects of culture along the other Russian and European scholars of the first half of the 20th century (E. Cassirer, N. Berdyaev, F.Stepun, M.Bakhtin). In their address to philosophy of culture, European intellectuals manifested a reaction to the cultural crisis in the first half of the twentieth century. In the article, the author analyses Chyzhevsky’s transition from problems of literary criticism and formalistic analysis of a literary work to the philosophy of culture on the basis of his two works devoted to Fedor Dostoevsky. For Russian religious philosophers of that period, Dostoevsky became the subject of religious discussion related to Christian ideology, while for Chyzhevsky the literary works of Dostoevsky confirmed ideas of prominent German philosophers, such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, and Karl Jaspers.

Krytyka tezy ergantropijnej zamierza wykazać, że filozofia Nowickiego obfituje w paradoksalne konsekwencje, jak choćby w to, że wyrosła z marksizmu koncepcja zaczyna głosić hasło warunkowania bytu przez świadomość, że pozostawia ona biologiczny wymiar trwania niezrozumiałym i że może prowadzić do fałszowania przez ludzi obrazu samego siebie.
The purpose of this article is to present the philosophy of Andrzej Nowicki, which puts forth a theory of an actual existence of a man in his own works, and then to criticize that thesis. Criticism of ergantropical thesis intends to show that Nowicki’s philosophy is full of paradoxical consequences – such as the fact, that a conception which grew out of the Marxism begins to promote the idea of conditioning of being by awareness, leaving the biological dimension of our existence incomprehensible and leading to the distortion of one’s self-image.

Filozofia mody (1905) Georga Simmla w opracowaniach historyczno-artystycznych jest wprawdzie często odnotowywana, ale nie poświęca się jej wiele uwagi. Nie jest to bowiem esej o artefaktach mody, a w istocie sprofilowana pod kątem zjawiska mody krytyka społeczeństwa nowoczesnego. Celem tego artykułu jest rekonstrukcja dualizmów, na których ufundowane jest społeczne zjawisko mody, a następnie zwrócenie uwagi na pojęcia mogące jednak zainteresować historyka sztuki. Są nimi przede wszystkim silnie zakorzenione w tradycji elementarne terminy „sztuka”, „mimesis” i „styl”, swoiście przez Simmla rozumiane, jak też inne pojęcia, nieoczywiste z punktu widzenia historii sztuki czy nawet estetyki, a przydatne z perspektywy estetyki filozoficznej i performatyki, np. tragedia, energia, tajemnica, zazdrość, wstyd, rzecz, ozdoba. Wydaje się, że Simmel czuje nie tylko społeczną, ale i artystyczno-estetyczną (zwłaszcza sensualną) złożoność mody, ale brak zainteresowania modą jako rodzajem sztuki nie pozwala mu tego w pełni wyeksplikować i wykorzystać.
Philosophy of Fashion (1905) by Georg Simmel, while often noted in historical and artistic studies, was not paid much attention. It is not an essay on fashion artifacts, but in fact a critique of modern society profiled in terms of the phenomenon of fashion. The aim of this article is to reconstruct the dualisms on which the social phenomenon of fashion is founded, and then to draw attention to concepts that may, however, be of interest to an art historian. They are primarily the elementary terms “art”, “mimesis” and “style”, strongly rooted in tradition, which Simmel understood specifically, as well as other concepts, not obvious from the point of view of art history or even aesthetics, and useful from the perspective of philosophical aesthetics and performance e.g. tragedy, energy, mystery, jealousy, shame, thing, ornament. It seems that Simmel feels not only the social, but also the artistic and aesthetic (especially sensual) complexity of fashion, but his lack of interest in understanding fashion as art prevents him from fully exploring and using it.

The article attempts to connect two dimensions of studies on Georg Simmel: reflection of his influence on the creation of sociology as a scholarly discipline as well as his interest In language and estheticism. In depth analysis of a chapter from Simmel's seminal work 'Sociology' the author will present the existing correlation between the search for new areas for research and looking for a new language suitable for their description.
Artykuł jest próbą powiązania ze sobą dwóch nurtów dających się wyróżnić w badaniach nad Georgiem Simmlem: refleksji nad wkładem tego uczonego do ukonstytuowania się socjologii jako dyscypliny naukowej oraz jego zainteresowania językiem i estetyką. Na przykładzie szczegółowej analizy jednego z najciekawszych rozdziałów dzieła Socjologia pokazana zostaje istniejąca w dziele Simmla zależność między poszukiwaniem nowych obszarów badawczych a poszukiwaniem nowego języka, który pozwoliłby je uchwycić.
