The aim of this article is to examine whether the “seven myths” identified and presented by Uroboros in “In venenoso Dracone …,” more than thirty years ago still function in the academic community. It also aims to address whether there are indications that this state has undergone a change. It seems that naturalists found that excessive adherence to a physicalist style of doing science severely limits research work. At the same time, scientists often grapple with the consequences of implementing physicalism and stumble while addressing philosophical issues.

While the catholic intellectual tradition upholds the uniqueness of humans, much contemporary scientific research has come to the opposing conclusion that humans are not significantly different from other animals. to engage in robust dialogue around the question of human uniqueness, we utilize Aquinas’s model of disputatio to focus on an attribute of human beings that is unexplored in the literature – namely, the human capacity to garden – and address five scientific and philosophical objections to our position that the capacity to garden makes humans distinct. engaging with various branches of science, we demonstrate that human capacities and modes of gardening are not only incrementally different, but also fundamentally different in kind, from those of nonhuman creatures. Philosophically, we utilize the power-object model of division and Aristotle’s categorization of knowledge to express the difference in kind between human beings and other animals. these responses allow us to set aside each major objection.

This review article discusses Andrzej Bielecki’s book Models of Neurons and Perceptrons: Selected Problems and Challenges, as published by Springer International Publishing. This work exemplifies “philosophy in science” by adopting a broad, multidisciplinary perspective for the issues related to the simulation of neurons and neural networks, and the author has addressed many of the important philosophical assumptions that are entangled in this area of modeling. Bielecki also raises several important methodological issues about modeling. This book is recommended for any philosophers who wish to learn more about the current state of neural modeling and find inspiration for a deeper philosophical reflection on the subject.

According to contemporary understanding of the universal tree of life, the traditionally recognized kingdoms of eukaryotic organisms-Protista, Fungi, Animalia and Plantae-are irregularly interspersed in a vast phylogenetic tree. There are numerous groups that in any Linnaean classification advised by phylogenetic relationships (i.e. a Hennigian system) would form sister groups to those kingdoms, therefore requiring us to admit them the same rank. In practice, this would lead to the creation of ca. 25-30 new kingdoms that would now be listed among animals and plants as “major types of life”. This poses problems of an aesthetic and educational nature. There are, broadly speaking, two ways to deal with that issue: a) ignore the aesthetic and educational arguments and propose classification systems that are fully consistent with the Hennigian principles of phylogenetic classification, i.e. are only composed of monophyletic taxa; b) ignore Hennigian principles and bunch small, relatively uncharacteristic groups into paraphyletic taxa, creating systems that are more convenient. In the paper, I present the debate and analyze the pros and cons of both options, briefly commenting on the deeper, third resolution, which would be to abandon classification systems entirely. Recent advances in eukaryotic classification and phylogeny are commented in the light of the philosophical question of the purpose and design principles of biological classification systems.

W tym artykule prowadzona jest wstępna analiza historyczno-problemowa dotycząca konceptualizacji pojęcia genu na gruncie genetyki molekularnej. Punktem wyjścia jest historyczny zarys relacji genetyki klasycznej oraz genetyki molekularnej; wskażę, w jaki sposób bagaż konceptualny genetyki klasycznej wpływał na rozwój pojęcia genu stosowanego w ramach genetyki molekularnej. Następnie zaprezentuję kilka prób uchwycenia w ramach filozofii nauki różnych podejść do zagadnienia pojęcia genu, m. in. sceptycyzmu względem genów oraz koncepcji genu nominalnego. Na bazie tych tropów nakreślę intuicję mówiącą, że koncepcja genu funkcjonująca w ramach genetyki molekularnej powinna być rozpatrywana z punktu widzenia eksperymentalizmu oraz pragmatyzmu. Wydaje się, iż należy pojęcie genu na gruncie genetyki molekularnej konceptualizować możliwie szeroko i w odniesieniu do materiału genetycznego, aby mogło pozostać funkcjonalne.
This article provides an initial analysis, from a historical standpoint, of the problematic nature of conceptualizations of the notion of gene in molecular genetics. The starting point is an historical outline of the relation between classical genetics and molecular genetics; it is indicated how the conceptual baggage of classical genetics influenced the development of the concepts of gene used later in molecular biology. I also reveal two problems of genes in the philosophy of science, i.e., skepticism concerning genes and the concept of nominal gene. I conclude that concept of gene functioning within the framework of molecular genetics should be considered from the point of view of experimentalism and pragmatism. It seems that the concept of gene on the molecular level should be conceptualized—in order to remain functional—as broadly as possible and in relation to genetic material.

This article discusses Piotr Lenartowicz’s S.J., philosophy of nature in the context of mathematical natural sciences. Lenartowicz based his philosophical reflections on biology on the thinking of Aristotle and not on Galileo’s assumption that mathematics is the language of nature. On the basis of modern physics, which has refuted mechanicism and materialism in quantum mechanics, biology develops, but its philosophy can be still interpreted materialistically. Lenartowicz’s intention was to repair the philosophy of biology by returning to Aristotle. However, it ignores the aspects that mathematical physics has overcome, aspects which have not yet been assimilated by the philosophy of biology.
W artykule omawiana jest filozofia przyrody Piotra Lenartowicza SJ w kontekście matematycznego przyrodoznawstwa. Refleksje filozoficzne dotyczące biologii Lenartowicz opierał na Arystotelesie, tymczasem Galileusz twierdził, że językiem przyrody jest matematyka. Na bazie współczesnej fizyki, która odparła mechanicyzm i materializm w mechanice kwantowej, rozwija się biologia, której filozofia bywa nadal interpretowana materialistycznie. Zamierzenia Lenartowicza naprawy filozofii biologii przez powrót do Arystotelesa ignorują jednak te aspekty, które pokonała fizyka matematyczna, a których jeszcze nie zasymilowała filozofia biologii.

Understanding how science is created and developed is a very complex problem. Many claim that once in a while the science goes through periods of so-called “revo-lutions” – diametric changes in the perception of the reality, that change the way we see the world. Such a vision of the development of knowledge is particularly evident in the history of physics. Do similar breakthroughs take place in other sciences, such as biology or chemistry, as well? Our main objective is to demonstrate that the scien-tific revolutions in biology can have a specific, local, character and concern only some particular branches of biology. This hypothesis will be discussed by analyzing the impact of microbiomics on the concept of the organism.

The book of Peter Godfrey-Smith Philosophy of Biology, which besides the Introduc-tion, contains nine chapters (Philosophy and Biology; Laws, Mechanisms, and Models; Evolution and Natural Selection; Adaptation, Construction, Function; Individuals; Genes; Species and the Tree of Life; Evolution and Social Behavior; Information), Bibliography and Subject Index, is a testimony to the extraordinary fascination with the phenomenon of life, that since time immemorial has been catching the attention of thinkers and scholars, yet still hides many undiscovered secrets. The reviewed volume was written for philosophers interested in biological problems and biologists interested in philosophical issues, and it is dedicated to the leading representative of the philosophy of biology of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st centuries – David Hull. Writing to two types of readers an insight into the phenomena of life from a double perspective, philosophical and biological is given which makes the book extremely interesting and informative.

The roots of the gene-centric view should be sought in a dynamic development of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century genetics – especially the modern evolutionary synthesis and molecular genetics. Behind this idea is a thesis that in biological sciences explanations that refer to genetic factors are privileged. In turn, the most important assumption of this thesis is that at the molecular level the genes and genetic code play a special role in determining the development of an organism. Although the gene-centric conception is one of the cornerstones of modern evolution theory, it has little interest in broader problems of development. Therefore, in recent years there has been a shift towards an alternative perspective stressing the importance of non- -genetic factors in explaining the phenomena and processes of biological development. Especially interesting in this context are arguments and ideas purporting to reject the thesis of a special role of genes and genetic code, particularly in the field of evolutionary developmental biology. An evo-devo context seems interesting because of its ambition to integrate developmental biology with evolutionary biology.
Źródeł koncepcji genocentrycznej należy dopatrywać się w dynamicznym rozwoju XIX- i XX-wiecznej genetyki – zwłaszcza współczesnej syntezy ewolucyjnej oraz genetyki molekularnej. Za ideą tą stoi teza, iż w naukach biologicznych wyjaśnienia odwołujące się do czynników genetycznych są uprzywilejowane; przy tym istotnym założeniem idei genocentrycznej w ramach genetyki molekularnej jest to, że geny oraz kod genetyczny pełnią szczególną rolę w determinowaniu rozwoju organizmu. Chociaż stanowisko genocentryczne jest jednym z fundamentów współczesnej teorii ewolucji, to przez długi czas nie podejmowano na tym gruncie problematyki biologii rozwoju. W związku z tym w ostatnich latach można dostrzec zwrot w stronę nurtu alternatywnego, wykazującego istotność uwzględnienia czynników poza-genetycznych w wyjaśnianiu zjawisk i procesów biologiczno-rozwojowych. Najistotniejsze w tym kontekście są argumenty i idee stojące za odrzuceniem specjalnej roli genów, zwłaszcza na gruncie ewolucyjnej biologii rozwoju; kontekst evo-devo wydaje się interesujący ze względu na ambicję integracji biologii rozwojowej i biologii ewolucyjnej.

IT specialists engaged in the issues of evolutionary algorithms claim that there has been a transfer of knowledge from biology to computer science, i.e., certain findings in evolutionary biology have become an inspiration for the creation of algorithms whose function is analogous to that of naturally occurring evolutionary processes. If this is correct, the following question should beanswered: what is the extent of knowledge transfer from evolutionary biology to computer science dealing with evolutionary algorithms? Answering this question becomes possible after a prior review of the working mode of evolutionary algorithms.
Informatycy zajmujący się problematyką algorytmów ewolucyjnych twierdzą, że miał miejsce transfer idei z biologii do informatyki, tzn. że ustalenia biologii ewolucyjnej stały się inspiracją do powstania tych algorytmów i że działają one analogicznie do procesów ewolucyjnych zachodzących w świecie przyrody. Jeśli jest tak faktycznie, to warto odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jakim zakresie następuje przeniesienie ustaleń z biologii ewolucyjnej do działu informatyki zajmującego się algorytmami ewolucyjnymi. Zadanie to stanie się możliwe po uprzednim zreferowaniu sposobu działania algorytmów ewolucyjnych.

W publikacjach opisujących teorię inteligentnego projektu można napotkać argument, że program badawczy SETI jest, w jakimś sensie, powiązany z wykrywaniem projektu i w związku z tym stanowi niejako „wersję” teorii inteligentnego projektu. W niniejszym artykule, na drodze analizy podstawowego dla SETI artykułu, w którym opisano założenia tego programu badawczego, staram się wykazać, że takie zestawienie SETI i teorii inteligentnego projektu nie jest uzasadnione, gdyż jest związane z uproszczonym — i błędnym — rozumieniem tego, czym zajmują się naukowcy w ramach programu SETI. W tym celu porównuję SETI z teorią inteligentnego projektu w rozumieniu szerokim i wąskim, w obu przypadkach wskazując na trudności związane z próbami wykazania, iż SETI jest „wersją” tak określonej teorii inteligentnego projektu. Główną przeszkodą jest to, że w ramach SETI raczej zakłada się istnienie danego artefaktu (sygnału nadanego przez cywilizację pozaziemską) niż stara się to istnienie udowodnić (wykryć projekt, jak powiedzieliby zwolennicy teorii inteligentnego projektu). W przypadku teorii inteligentnego projektu w rozumieniu węższym próba „dopasowania” jednej teorii do drugiej doprowadza do kuriozalnych rezultatów, co obrazuję przykładem.
In some publications dealing with the theory of intelligent design (or perhaps one should say, a theory of intelligent design, as there seem to be no universally accepted definition) one encounters an argument that the SETI research programme is, in a way, related to design detection and hence is a “version” of the theory of intelligent design. This article, by analysing the article that is foundational for SETI describing the assumptions behind this research programme, aims at showing that such a comparison of SETI and the theory of intelligent design is not justified as it is based on a simplified — and wrong — understanding of what the SETI researchers do. To this end, I compare SETI with both broad and narrow understanding of a theory of intelligent design, in both cases pointing to difficulties related to showing that SETI is a “version” of the considered theory of intelligent design. The main obstacle being that within SETI one assumes the existence of a given artefact (in this case a signal from another civilisation) rather than tries to prove that such an artefact does exist (to detect design, in the lingo of the supporters of the theory of intelligent design). In case of the narrow understanding of a theory of intelligent design, attempting to “mould” one theory so that it resembles the other shows that such an endeavour is deeply flawed, as exemplified in the text.

W artykule analizuję stosunek J. B. S. Haldane’a do kwestii definiowania koniecznych warunków (ewolucji drogą) doboru naturalnego. Kwestia ta jest ostatnio żywo dyskutowana na pograniczu filozofii biologii i biologii teoretycznej. Stawiam roboczą hipotezę, że Haldane, podobnie jak wielu innych genetyków populacyjnych, nie starał się znaleźć podsumowania warunków doboru, które odnosiłoby się do wszystkich sytuacji jego wystąpienia, ale zamiast tego konstruował modele matematyczne określonych przypadków.
I analyze J.B.S. Haldane’s view on defining necessary conditions for (evolution by) natural selection. This issue has been recently broadly discussed on the borderline between philosophy of biology and theoretical biology. I put forward a hypothesis that Haldane (like many population geneticists) did not try to formulate a summary of conditions of natural selection applicable to all cases of selection, but he built instead relevant differential mathematical models of natural selection.

Opis:
The aim of this article was to present one of the methods of reconciling of epistemological antireductionism and ontological physicalism, which explains differences between sciences, through an ontological picture of the most general structure of reality. The main thesis held that accepting this perspective allows us to achieve the above-mentioned reconcilement. First, the main arguments for and against physical reductionism, were described before the ontological assumptions were presented; then the assumptions was analysed in the light of this ontological construction as well as some facts from the fields of methodology and the history of natural sciences. Finally, some conclusions were drawn from the presented vision. They were connected with the epistemological status of analogy and methodological postulate of simplicity.
